The phenomenon of false friends of a translator relates to a pair of languages. It occurs when words or phrases that sound or look similar in two languages differ to a significant degree in meaning. Consequently, learners using a false friend make a fool of themselves as it has been illustrated in the title of the article with an English-German joke. Millions of adult learners have acquired good-to-excellent literacy in English, but most of them continue to have difficulty with oral communication in that language. The more obvious their problem is with pronunciation, which varies from just noticeably “foreign” to very difficult to understand, the less apparent, but possibly fundamental to their overall skill level in English, is their difficulty in recognizing spoken sounds, words, and phrases of that language. Contemporary research has shown that adults are capable of learning to perceive a new language quite accurately, through systematic training. Perceptual skills acquired through such training are likely to contribute to continuing improvement in pronunciation and to an increasing vocabulary. Such a training program is described in this chapter, the Speech Perception Assessment and Training Program for ESL (SPATS-ESL). After 20-30 hours of training with this program, most ESL students are shown to achieve near-native recognition of the sounds of English and of words in sentences spoken at normal conversational rates.

The development of modern society in the world takes place in the era of rapid development of information technologies in all fields of human activity, including education. Therefore, one of the main ways of solving the problem of education modernization is the introduction of information technologies and combination with traditional educational means. The issue of ensuring the high level of information and communication technologies in the educational process becomes more urgent every year. The experience of teachers of higher education institutions shows the effectivenes of information and communication technologies integration in teaching English. Information and communication technologies enable students to be involved in the learning process, increase students’ motivation and their interest in learning English. The use of information and communication technologies in the educational process gives the possibility to reduce the time for mastering the material at the expense of clarity and to check students’ knowledge in the interactive form. The article deals with the use of modern information and communication technologies in the process of teaching English in higher education. Aspects of information and communication technologies in the process of learning a foreign language are theoretically grounded. The experience of information and communication technologies implementation in the educational process of higher educational institutions is analyzed and the main advantages and disadvantages of their application are characterized. Nowadays the widespread use of information and communication technologies in every field, especially in education, brings forward the idea of use of them by teachers and students intensively. Although teachers and students are far from each other physically, they communicate thanks to information and communication technologies, learn new information about their lessons, repeat this information, and reinforce what they learn in class. When taking learning and teaching into consideration, learning and teaching do not happen without communication and interaction. The importance of social media tools in information and communication technologies has been increasing in terms of education. Social media tools are generally called as social networking sites. Facebook is the most used and known tool among them. Facebook is a social network that provides communication and information exchange. People who have Internet connection in every part of the world communicate and interact among themselves via this social tool. In other words, people compose virtual social lives for themselves. People in these virtual lives identify themselves, communicate and get along with people who have the same cultural level via the facilities that the Internet provides. This case tries to find out the use of Facebook by language instructors via a questionnaire which was given to 160 English, French, and German language instructors at the School of Foreign Languages, Basic Languages Department of Anadolu University. Findings emerged related to every aim of the study. Some conclusions were drawn from the findings gained in the study. The results of the study revealed that Facebook has been used widely by instructors. There were some differences in the use of Facebook among English, French and German instructors. It was found that English instructors made extensive use of Facebook. Moreover, some instructors were found to create class pages and have some activities like communication, sharing class events, giving homework and sharing videos. Based on the results, the study was concluded by some implications to use Facebook in foreign language learning.

Abstract:
This paper reports on the evidence learning found from a flipped, blended, ubiquitous learning Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) course teaching global leadership skills using a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to Japanese undergraduates through English. The purposes of the current study are to see if (1) there was any evidence of learning found in the students’ oral outputs, and (2) there were any changes in student perceptions about the course and their Target Language (TL) fluency over a 10-week period. The data were collected through two interview sessions conducted in Weeks 4 and 14. A similar set of questions were asked in both interviews to gauge student understanding of the course content, perceptual changes, and oral output skills. Three-semesters worth of interview data were transcribed and sorted into four categories; (1) transfer of words, (2) transfer of phrases, (3) transfer of concepts, and (4) application of concepts. The results indicated that the students’ perceptions of the course shifted from an English as a foreign language course to a leadership course, and they produced more course relevant answers.

This chapter explores the theology of Paul Tillich (1886–1965), the German Protestant theologian who immigrated to the United States in 1933, at the age of forty-seven, and established himself as a bestselling writer in a language he learned from scratch in his new homeland. Tillich was famous for rejecting the notion of a “theistic” God, that is, God as an externally existing something, and speaking of God instead as “the ground of being.” He adopted a special vocabulary to replace other conventional theological concepts with words and phrases that he invented or that he borrowed from what he described as an existentialist viewpoint. A ubiquitous word in his English writings is meaning. In his pre-emigration days, Tillich had used the German Sinn to such an excessive degree—sometimes literally dozens of times per page—and with such a want of precision that it fairly became incomprehensible. In English, meaning for Tillich came to carry a large range of different senses and to appear in a range of phrases, including at least two—“ultimate meaning” and the almost absurd “meaning which gives meaning to all meanings”—that appear to be replacement expressions for God. The ambiguity and polyvalence of meaning no doubt helped enhance the word’s appeal among readers of Tillich’s English-language works, since it allowed them to supply their own notions of the meaning of meaning.
