This paper analyses Polish feature films which deal with the subject of POW camps during World War II, especially the so-called oflags (German: Offizierslager), i.e. Wehrmacht camps for officers. In Poland, nearly 200 feature films about World War II and the Nazi occupation were made in 1945–1999, with only eight raising the topic of POW camps. Eroica directed by Andrzej Munk is one of the first examples, and the best-known one. It will trace how game makers working for both Allied and Axis nations redesigned Monopoly to address their own political contexts, ranging from the Great Depression to Italian Fascism to Nazi German POW camps. To understand how different nations mobilized Monopoly for wartime, we first must turn to the historical origins of its design.

During World War I, the Swiss state interned nearly 30,000 foreign soldiers who had previously been held in POW camps in Germany, France, Britain, Belgium, Austria, and Russia. Leslie Wallace Lauste (1908–2001) was an English surgeon of French ancestry who practised in Brighton. This article used his memoirs and interviews to describe his life during the Second World War. The handling of Axis prisoners of war (POWs) became an unavoidable irritant in Franco-American relations. The US Army was obliged to follow the Geneva Convention on the treatment of POWs, which the French populace saw as leniency. They especially resented the generous food rations allotted to enemy POWs while the French went without, and no one wanted POW camps nearby. Although separating French citizens from Axis POWs was easily accomplished, the French SS posed another problem. The French demanded that German POWs undertake the dangerous work of clearing land mines, and they resented liberties granted to Italian POWs.

North Carolina hosted some 3,000 Italian and 10,000 German POWs in the state. There were eighteen camps for Germans, where the men worked at farming, textiles, lumber, tobacco, and saw mills. Taking the place of American men who had gone off to war, the POWs were good workers with very few escapes and were able to make some lifelong friends with their employers.

This chapter describes the Gulag policy for releasing their “inferior workforce,” also known as the “ballast.” Camp officials referred to the process of discharging terminally or severely ill prisoners as “unloading” (razgruzka), and it involved many types of releases, including medical discharges and special amnesties. Just as Stalin selected German POWs for repatriation who were invalids, and whose labor could no longer be exploited in camps, he unloaded sick and emaciated Gulag prisoners. Terminally ill prisoners who had been fully exploited were callously discarded, and many died shortly after their release. Medical releases and amnesties of dying prisoners thus constituted a fundamental Gulag practice applied on a massive scale. It effectively kept official mortality rates low, and thus concealed the destructive nature of the Gulag.

The Berlin Lautarchiv holds a large collection of historical recordings with POWs during World War I. These recordings were produced with the prisoners in German camps by a group of German linguists, anthropologists, and musicologists in an ambitious project to ‘collect the languages of the world’. The acoustic documents were archived and are now digitally available. Most of the recordings with African prisoners and civilian internees were never translated, yet some of them surfaced in radio broadcasts and publications. By means of approaching acoustic, visual, and written traces in European archives, which relate to two of the speakers and their biographies, this chapter engages with linguistic practices, with epistemic regimes that framed the project of recording in camps, as well as its racist assumptions at specific moments of colonial knowledge production.

Com isso, as empresas utilizam hortifrutigranjeiros denominados Sistemas Nacionais de Centrais de Abastecimento (CEASA) para realizar a distribuição. É noValedo São Francisco, na cidade de Juazeiro-BAque está localizadauma das maiores CEASAS do país, responsável por receber muitos alimentos de diversas regiões e distribuir ao consumidor. Assim, o presente projeto teve como objetivo, analisar e identificar ascausas dos desperdícios, como também informar aos comerciantes práticas pós-colheita e os possíveis impactos relacionados ao grande amontoado de resíduos gerados. Para a concretização da pesquisa, baseou-se no método hipotético-dedutivo, promovendo uma busca de dados, formulando questionários e panfletos para ação. Como resultado,observou-se a falta de discernimento técnico e consciência pessoal, dos comerciantes e das pessoas no geral, pois a não obrigatoriedade, ocasionava o desinteresse sobre o tema. A vista disso, conclui-se que a realização de projetos como este, geram um despertar e fazem com que a comunidade possa enxergar alguns problemas e atitudes, que de certa forma já se tornaram comuns e involuntários.

The chapter is a flashback to Ancona, Italy, in the summer of 1946, at the end of World War II, close to the time Dimitri Shalikashvili, John Shalikashvili’s father, will be released from a British prisoner of war (POW) camp, ending his military career at the mere rank of major. The chapter overviews the impressive military and European aristocratic background of the Shalikashvili lineage; summarizes Dimitri’s service to the tsarist, Free Georgian, Polish, and German militaries; sets out Dimitri’s character and qualities, the positive aspects of which are shared by his son John; and explains how geostrategic shifts and other factors beyond Dimitri’s control ruined the chance this highly professional military officer had of measuring up to his ancestors, thereby providing comparative grist to mill the question of the determinants of success.

Os aditivos são utilizados em produtos cárneos com diversas finalidades e, dentre os principais, estão o sal (NaCl), que apresenta ação antimicrobiana, realça o sabor dos produtos, extrai e solubiliza proteínas; e o fosfato, que atua sinergicamente com o NaCl, para reter a água do produto. Entretanto, o consumo em excesso de ambas substâncias está atrelado a diversos problemas de saúde, o que gera um problema de saúde pública e grande demanda por produtos com maior saudabilidade. A redução pode ocorrer de várias formas, mas pincipalmente por substituição parcial por outros sais, ou através de tecnologias verdes, tendo como principais a alta pressão hidrostática (APH), campo elétrico pulsado (CEP), ultrassom (US) e água eletrolisada básica (AEB). O trabalho objetivou destacar os principais e mais recentes estudos voltados à aplicação de APH, CEP, US e AEB como estratégia na redução de NaCl e fosfato em diferentes produtos cárneos, bem como explicar os princípios de cada uma das tecnologias e os possíveis fenômenos que possibilitaram a redução desses aditivos.

The fourth group includes the first Soviet intelligence and state security officers that the Western Allies accepted, albeit cautiously, after the wartime policy of alliance with the Soviet Union began to change. These defectors revealed that Soviet intelligence and state security services’ priorities were focused on Nazi hunting and counterintelligence, which in the Soviet services’ definition included preventing Soviet citizens returning from POW and refugee camps from becoming conduits for foreign infiltration. This group includes twenty-two officers, of which the names are unknown for ten and details are scanty for most. The lack of publicly available information reflects the tentative Western handling of Soviet defectors in the early post-war period. Germany and Austria, where the Western Allies’ occupation zones bordered directly on Soviet occupation zones, were the most prominent locations for defections. Most were handled quietly, and some were settled in out of the way places like South America and told to restart their life there.

A migração do campo para a cidade é uma realidade, pois a busca de melhores condições de rendimentos, de estudos para os mais jovens e a ausência de aptidão pelo campo por parte de alguns produtores geram a não permanência nas propriedades. A pesquisa objetivou analisar a percepção dos agricultores sobre a Sucessão da Gestão na Agricultura Familiar no Projeto de Assentamento (PA) Santa Olga, localizado no município de Nova Andradina, em Mato Grosso do Sul. A metodologia utilizada neste estudo está baseada em um estudo de caso, com coleta de dados por meio da aplicação de questionários aos assentados visitados, totalizando 90 lotes. Os principais resultados mostram que a percepção de sucessão dos assentados do PA Santa Olga sobre a preparação de sucessores nos lotes é pequena e a grande maioria dos produtores ouvidos durante esta pesquisa não realiza nenhuma estratégia de continuidade.
