Abstract:
This thesis is intended to demonstrate the existence of a vibrant cultural and literary life among the survivors of the Holocaust during their time as Displaced Persons (DPs) in Germany, Austria and Italy. It delineates their historical background, presents theoretical problems with which they may have been confronted, and explains the lack of previous academic research into their creative production. It then analyzes three representative literary journals from the period 1946 to 1949, when the DP population was at its peak: In Gang: khoydesh-zhurnal far literatur un kunst / khoydesh-zhurnal far literatur, kultur un gezelshaftlekhe problemen (In Progress: Monthly Journal of Literature and Art / Monthly Journal of Literature, Culture and Societal Problems), published in Rome between March 1947 and February 1949; Fun letstn khurbn: tsaytshrift far geshikhte fun yidishn lebn beysn natsi-rezhim (From the Last Extermination: Journal for the History of the Jewish People During the Nazi Regime), published in Munich between August 1946 and December 1948; and Shriftn far literatur, kunst un gezelshaftlekhe fragn (Writings for Literature, Art and Societal Questions), published in Kassel, Germany in January 1948. These journals were chosen because their editorial material reflected strong commitments to dealing with the political and especially the cultural issues of the day. These included the on-going examination of the possibility of Jewish cultural continuity, the drive for a Jewish state, and the attempt to come to terms with the immensity and horrors of the Holocaust. The thesis also includes an annotated bibliography of the contents of these three journals which is intended to improve their accessibility for future study.

Marco, Palau Rosa de les Neus. "La Construcció del relat alemany sobre el procés català: anàlisi de l'agenda, dels frames i del discurs per part dels mitjans de comunicació escrits d'Alemanya, 2010-2015." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/664426.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis studies the construction of the news about events in the Catalan political process in the German written media. The period of analysis is extended from 2010 to 2015, when the process has gone from civil society to the Catalan political agenda and has been internationalized. In this context, the German published opinion is considered a referent. The thesis analyzes twelve key facts based on a dual methodology, quantitative and qualitative. An analysis of Agenda and Frames is carried out, Discourse Analysis is also applied and research is complemented with interviews with journalists and politicians. The methodology has been tested and validated by seven German-speaking analysts. The results of the research, also exhibited in forty-nine tables and figures, show the establishment of the agenda and the framing of the themes and actors of the Catalan process, the relationship between discourse, power and legitimacy, as well as the construction of the German published opinion.

Abstract:
The accurate calculation of atomic spectra, including radiative corrections, is one of the rather challenging tasks in theoretical physics. The entire formalism of quantum (gauge) field theory, augmented by the difficulties of the bound-state formalism, is needed for an accurate understanding of the relevant physics at the level of current high-precision spectroscopy. In this thesis, several calculations in this area are described in detail. Investigations on large-order perturbation-theory effects (and predictive limits of perturbation theory) supplement these investigations. In the context of applications, numerical algorithms for the acceleration of the convergence of series are discussed.

Reuster-Jahn, Uta. "New Responses to Old Problems: How the German Translator Publisher is Making Swahili Literature Available in a Notoriously Difficult Market." 2018. https://ul.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A35330.

Full text
Abstract:
This article shows how changing ideologies and evolving market forces have combined to lessen German publishers’ enthusiasm for Swahili literature – and how, surprisingly, translators of Swahili are now taking the initiative to ensure that Swahili literature still gets published. After outlining preceding periods of translation and showing how they are determined by ideologies and market forces, I take a close and partially personal look at the development and role of the translator-publishers: how digital technology and new formats have enabled them to take over classical publishers’ tasks. Still, even if translators manage to publish their translated works, they are confronted with the challenge of reaching an audience and creating a space for Swahili literature in German-speaking countries. These translators could possibly join forces to reach a critical mass for translations, thus paving the way for Swahili translated literature to be recognized and appreciated by German-speaking readers.

Abstract:
Lucie Rydlová: German media houses on Polish press market Abstract This thesis examines the activity of the German media groups Axel Springer AG and Verlagsgruppe Passau on the Polish press market. These German publishers have taken advantage of the transformation and liberalization after 1990 and have massively invested in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In Poland, dailies were published by both of the aforementioned groups. Axel Springer AG produces the tabloid daily Fakt and between 2006 and 2009 the group produced the semi-tabloid Dziennik. Verlagsgruppe Passau has owned a variety of regional dailies (now merged under one umbrella and published only a few times a week). With regard to the historical burden on the relationship between Poland and Germany, the position of a German publisher in the field of opinion-forming media is rather difficult. This thesis compares the operation of the two aforementioned publishers on the Polish press market, with the focus on how they entered the market and expanded their business, on the influence of the publisher on the editorial slant, on the controversies with the Anti-Monopoly Office, and on their attitude towards their competitors and the Polish political representation. Activities beyond publishing and standards imposed in the parent and subsidiary...

Gérard Genette famously noted that paratexts are ‘those liminal devices’, elements, both within and outside the book, that form part of the complex relationship between book, author, publisher, and reader. He determined that titles, forewords, epigraphs, and publishers’ jacket copy are part of a book’s ‘private and public history’. By considering each of these liminal devices in the larger context of marketing strategies, this research report addresses the question of how paratexts are altered to appeal to different markets in different countries – specifically South Africa and Germany – and how this is done in relation to five translated novels: Stadt des Goldes by Norman Ohler; Portrait with Keys by Ivan Vladislavić; Township Blues and Themba by Lutz van Dijk; and Fiela se Kind by Dalene Matthee. The research report argues that the relationship between paratext and reader is of vital importance when it comes to understanding how cultures are perceived by foreign readers. With each comparison between the paratexts of the original and their translated novels, the research report demonstrates that paratextual alterations are predominantly influenced by alterations in time and geography; use or dismissal of clichés and stereotypes; educational value; and either techniques which familiarise or defamiliarise the reader. By uncovering the way novels are marketed to a foreign readership, it becomes possible to uncover why translations occur and how the source-culture is perceived.

The French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution brought impact in both politics and economics that cause the rise of middle classes and changing environment in the music society. Under the influence of the new environment, the business of music publishers grow rapidly, and publishing music scores became a part of composers’ major income. The chamber music and works for solo instruments are the most popular genres that middle classes and bourgeois are more interested during the classical period. The study focuses on the relationships between music publishers, composers, and public amateur. The thesis consists of three chapters, in addition to the introduction and conclusion. Chapter one contains the overview of the background of the society and musical environments in the late eighteenth century in Germany and Austria. Chapter two describes the music publishers in Germany and Austria, with emphasis on two leading publishers, Artaria and Breitkopf & Härtel. The third chapter focuses the discussion of how publishing process effects the composers’ writing. By the end of the eighteenth century, due to the changing of the social and musical environments, music publishers were developed rapidly. Bourgeois are the major consumers, and the publication of scores depended on the needs of the amateur, that publishers gained their taste through the newspaper advertisement. The chamber music and works for solo instruments are the most selling items among the popular genres. Because there are different economic background from Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, their publishing process are not the same. After discharging from the Esterházy, Haydn started publishing his works. He, however, still remained part of payments from the Esterházy, and didn’t depend on publishers entirely. Haydn, sometimes tried to sell the same work several times. Mozart and Beethoven didn’t get paid from the court, they had to promote their works to publisher. Beethoven’s publishing process is different from Haydn, and Mozart, he had forced the publisher stop to publish the pirate edition, and got more money by quoting at the publishers. Furthermore, between the choices of art and commercialism, they have a significant influence on the music of the Romantic era.

After the digitalization, the internet users gradually choose to go on digital platforms to read news, and platforms have become the main places for news websites to receive the view numbers. Many European news publishers do not satisfy with the phenomenon that digital platforms use their news contents and get most of the digital advertising without paying anything to them, because of that, the European publishers propose that digital platforms should pay for news contents. Germany and Spain enacted the new copyright for news publishers in 2013 and 2014. In chapter 2, the paper analyzes the character of news media, the effect of digital platforms and the discussion of using copyright to protect news products. By using the document analysis method, the paper analyzes the background of the legislation, the regulation of the new copyright and how the stakeholders view this new copyright for news publishers. The paper found out that even though the new right can regulate small digital platforms; it cannot make large digital platforms such as Google news pay for news products. The paper suggests that the local government should develop a public digital platform for news publishers to reduce the international digital platform’s impact on news publishers.
