Full textThis doctoral thesis studies the construction of the news about events in the Catalan political process in the German written media. The period of analysis is extended from 2010 to 2015, when the process has gone from civil society to the Catalan political agenda and has been internationalized. In this context, the German published opinion is considered a referent. The thesis analyzes twelve key facts based on a dual methodology, quantitative and qualitative. An analysis of Agenda and Frames is carried out, Discourse Analysis is also applied and research is complemented with interviews with journalists and politicians. The methodology has been tested and validated by seven German-speaking analysts. The results of the research, also exhibited in forty-nine tables and figures, show the establishment of the agenda and the framing of the themes and actors of the Catalan process, the relationship between discourse, power and legitimacy, as well as the construction of the German published opinion.

Full textGérard Genette famously noted that paratexts are ‘those liminal devices’, elements, both within and outside the book, that form part of the complex relationship between book, author, publisher, and reader. He determined that titles, forewords, epigraphs, and publishers’ jacket copy are part of a book’s ‘private and public history’. By considering each of these liminal devices in the larger context of marketing strategies, this research report addresses the question of how paratexts are altered to appeal to different markets in different countries – specifically South Africa and Germany – and how this is done in relation to five translated novels: Stadt des Goldes by Norman Ohler; Portrait with Keys by Ivan Vladislavić; Township Blues and Themba by Lutz van Dijk; and Fiela se Kind by Dalene Matthee. The research report argues that the relationship between paratext and reader is of vital importance when it comes to understanding how cultures are perceived by foreign readers. With each comparison between the paratexts of the original and their translated novels, the research report demonstrates that paratextual alterations are predominantly influenced by alterations in time and geography; use or dismissal of clichés and stereotypes; educational value; and either techniques which familiarise or defamiliarise the reader. By uncovering the way novels are marketed to a foreign readership, it becomes possible to uncover why translations occur and how the source-culture is perceived.

The French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution brought impact in both politics and economics that cause the rise of middle classes and changing environment in the music society. Under the influence of the new environment, the business of music publishers grow rapidly, and publishing music scores became a part of composers’ major income. The chamber music and works for solo instruments are the most popular genres that middle classes and bourgeois are more interested during the classical period. The study focuses on the relationships between music publishers, composers, and public amateur. The thesis consists of three chapters, in addition to the introduction and conclusion. Chapter one contains the overview of the background of the society and musical environments in the late eighteenth century in Germany and Austria. Chapter two describes the music publishers in Germany and Austria, with emphasis on two leading publishers, Artaria and Breitkopf & Härtel. The third chapter focuses the discussion of how publishing process effects the composers’ writing. By the end of the eighteenth century, due to the changing of the social and musical environments, music publishers were developed rapidly. Bourgeois are the major consumers, and the publication of scores depended on the needs of the amateur, that publishers gained their taste through the newspaper advertisement. The chamber music and works for solo instruments are the most selling items among the popular genres. Because there are different economic background from Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, their publishing process are not the same. After discharging from the Esterházy, Haydn started publishing his works. He, however, still remained part of payments from the Esterházy, and didn’t depend on publishers entirely. Haydn, sometimes tried to sell the same work several times. Mozart and Beethoven didn’t get paid from the court, they had to promote their works to publisher. Beethoven’s publishing process is different from Haydn, and Mozart, he had forced the publisher stop to publish the pirate edition, and got more money by quoting at the publishers. Furthermore, between the choices of art and commercialism, they have a significant influence on the music of the Romantic era.

After the digitalization, the internet users gradually choose to go on digital platforms to read news, and platforms have become the main places for news websites to receive the view numbers. Many European news publishers do not satisfy with the phenomenon that digital platforms use their news contents and get most of the digital advertising without paying anything to them, because of that, the European publishers propose that digital platforms should pay for news contents. Germany and Spain enacted the new copyright for news publishers in 2013 and 2014. In chapter 2, the paper analyzes the character of news media, the effect of digital platforms and the discussion of using copyright to protect news products. By using the document analysis method, the paper analyzes the background of the legislation, the regulation of the new copyright and how the stakeholders view this new copyright for news publishers. The paper found out that even though the new right can regulate small digital platforms; it cannot make large digital platforms such as Google news pay for news products. The paper suggests that the local government should develop a public digital platform for news publishers to reduce the international digital platform’s impact on news publishers.
