<p> In the years since unification, the phenomenon of xenophobia (<i> Ausl&auml;nderfeindlichkeit</i>) in Germany has been largely understood as an "east German problem." The recent discovery of a series of murders by an underground cell of eastern German neo-Nazis &ndash; who killed eight Turkish immigrants and one Greek immigrant between 2000 and 2006 &ndash; has again directed Germany's attention to the problem of <i>Ausl&auml;nderfeindlichkeit </i> and right-wing extremism in eastern Germany. Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine Novalis's philosophy of practical knowledge and to position it within the context of the work of other Romantic natural philosophers and some aspects of contemporary science. His views on Ritter's galvanism and the latter's significance for his thought in general are treated here for the first time in full. Contrary to most previous views, it is argued that a major part of Novalis's outlook stems from his concept of practical knowledge and his reflection over the term "experiment", which proves to be an extremely complex and central idea in his thought. Was German post-1918 military culture conducive to a thorough investigation of past mistakes, a re-evaluation of traditional notions, and the pursuit of new ideas? The legitimation of science as the most authoritative form of human knowledge is the result of complex literary and socio-political processes. The cultural status that science acquired continued for centuries and, even though it has been challenged in our times, it still is one of the main providers of meaning for social life.
