This thesis uses the history of the Disconto-Gesellschaft to argue that the role of universal banks in fostering German industrialization was less than has previously been assumed. The archive of the Disconto-Gesellschaft is not currently accessible, so the thesis will use industrial archives to examine the bank's relations with industrial companies. After a discussion of the literature, a summary of other Disconto-Gesellschaft ventures shows that the Dortmunder Union was not an isolated disaster, but one among many. This dissertation examines the hitherto neglected role foreign, and specifically German, bankers played in the Chinese economy and the history of modern economic globalisation in China during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The objective of this thesis is to show that after World War I, the National Bank of Persia emerged as an ideal accessory to Germany's desire to establish a foothold in Iran. Band-gap engineering of bulk germanium (Ge) holds the potential for realizing a laser source, permitting full integration of monolithic circuitry on CMOS platforms. Techniques rely mainly on tensile strain and n-type doping. In this thesis, we focus on studying diffusion-based phosphorus (P) doping of Ge using spin-on dopants (SOD), and tensile strain engineering using freestanding micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS)-like structures. This thesis examines the emergence, and then development, of what I call 'monetary mythology', a historical narrative, or version of history, concerning the inter-war period of Germany. Following the Second World War, it was left to West German elites to establish a new federal central bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank. There are significant differences between experiment and theoretical calculations of the electronic structure of GaSb/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots. Using a multi-band effective mass approximation it is shown that the influence of size and geometry of quantum dots has little or no effect in determining the hydrostatic strain. Furthermore, the valenceband ground state energies of the quantum dots studied are surprisingly consistent.
