Abstract:
Germanium has been reported as a mineral element affecting plant cell metabolism. Many trials to supply germanium to fruit have been carried out since tests have confirmed germanium's role as a medical substance. Supplying germanium to orchards by soil and foliar application was not effective because of loss from rainfall. Also, tree injection with germanium solution required the insertion of a tube to the tree xylem at each injection site. In order to increase germanium absorption by fruit, this study carried out the postharvest dipping of fruit into germanium solution. `Niitaka' pear (Pyruspyrifolia) fruit was treated with two types of germanium, GeO (inorganic type) and Ge-132 (organic type), in a concentration of 50 mg·L–1 just after harvest in early Oct. 2004. Flesh browning after peeling the fruit was delayed by germanium treatment, and polyphenoloxidase (PPO) activities were lowered. Postharvest potentials were maintained at high levels for fruit firmness, physiological disorders, and decayed fruit during cold storage at 0 to 1 °C for 2 months. Antioxidant and some phenolic compounds were higher than those of control fruit.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTJean Mabillon'sDe re diplomatica, whose importance for diplomatics and the philosophy of history is well recognized, also contributed to the seventeenth-century European debate over the relationship among documents, archives, and historical or juridical proof. This article juxtaposes early works on diplomatics by Mabillon, Daniel Papebroche, and Barthélémy Germon against Germanius archivitheorists including Rutger Ruland and Ahasver Fritsch to reveal two incommensurate approaches that emerged around 1700 for assessing the authority of written records. Diplomatics concentrated on comparing the material and textual features of individual documents to authentic specimens in order to separate the genuine from the spurious, whereas theius archiviemphasized thepublica fides(public faith) that documents derived from their placement in an authentic sovereign's archive. Diplomatics' emergence as a separate auxiliary science of history encouraged the erasure of archivality from the primary conditions of documentary assessment for historians, however, while theius archivi's privileging of institutional over material criteria for authority foreshadowed European state practice and the evolution of archivistics into the twentieth century. This article investigates these competing discourses of evidence and their implications from the perspective of early modern archival practices.

Abstract:
A battery of OECD- and GLP-compliant toxicological studies was performed to assess the safety of a highly purified germanium sesquioxide, an organic form of the naturally occurring, nonessential trace element germanium. Germanium dioxide and germanium lactate citrate (inorganic germaniums) have been shown to induce renal toxicity, whereas germanium sesquioxide (an organic germanium) has been shown to have a more favorable safety profile. However, past toxicity studies on germanium sesquioxide compounds have not clearly stated the purity of the tested compounds. In the studies reported herein, there was no evidence of mutagenicity in a bacterial reverse mutation test or an in vitro mammalian chromosomal aberration test. There was no genotoxic activity observed in an in vivo mammalian micronucleus test at concentrations up to the limit dose of 2000 mg/kg bw/day. In a 90-day repeated-dose oral toxicity study in Han:WIST rats conducted at doses of 0, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg bw/day by gavage, there were no mortalities, treatment-related adverse effects, or target organs identified. The no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) was determined to be 2000 mg/kg bw/day.

Two types of germanium, GeO (inorganic type) and Ge-132 (organic type), in concentrations of 5, 10, 25, and 50 mg·L–1 were supplied to `Niitaka' pear trees by trunk injection (1.5 L/tree), four times at 15-day intervals from June 2004. The treatment with 50 mg·L–1 GeO showed decreased fruit weight, but 50 mg·L–1 Ge-132 showed no difference to the control and other treatments. Fruit lenticels were increased in size by all of the Ge treatments in comparison to control fruit. Soluble solids as well as Hunter value `a' of the fruits of all Ge treatments were higher than that of the control. Abstract:
AbstractPotassium disilanyl, KSi2H5, 2-potassium trisilanyl, KSiH(SiH3)2, and 2-potassium isotetrasilanyl, KSi(SiH3)3, are formed in the reactions of potassium silyl. KSiH3, with di-, tri-, n-tetra-, /so-tetra- and pentasilane, respectively. The simultaneous formation of potassium hydride can be almost completely avoided by carrying out the reactions in very diluted solution. The product mixtures formed have been analyzed by gas chromatography after reaction with benzylchloride, potassium hydride then giving toluene. A mechanism for the stepwise formation of the various higher potassium silanyls is discussed.

The purity of the silanyls varies between 95 and 99%. Their stability increases from potassium di- to 2-potassium isotetrasilanyl. The 29Si NMR spectra exhibit a strong high field shift for the metal substituted silicon atoms and a m oderate low field shift for the other silicon atoms compared with the signals of the corresponding silanes.

AbstractPlasma Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition (PACVD) deposited films of Boron Phosphide (BP) are known to be very effective in protecting the 8-11.5μm band IR substrate materials germaniurn and zinc sulphide from solid and liquid particle erosion encountered in high speed flight. This paper describes the results obtained by protecting the 3-5μm band substrate material silicon and the 8-11.5μm band substrate material zinc selenide. In addition, results are presented which show that germanium can be very effectively protected from the corrosive effects of salt fog.

Abstract:
Introduction: Germ Cell Tumors (GCT) represent less than 4% of primary brain tumors. They comprise Germaniums, Non-Germinomatous Germ Cell Tumors and Teratomas. Teratomas represent less than 20% of intracranial GCT. They are tumors of multipotential cells derived from all 3 germ cell layers, frequently arising in midline structures, most commonly in the pineal and suprasellar regions, with a clear excess of male cases and frequently found in children and young adults. We report a case of a mature teratoma in the third ventricle in a 37-year-old male. Case Report: We report a case of a 37-year-old male with a history of headache lasting up to 9 days and refractory to pharmacological treatment. The CT scan revealed a 20mm round hypodense lesion in the anterior third ventricle, with a punctate hyperdensity in the inferior pole causing biventricular hydrocephalus with no periventricular lucency and the MRI showed a well-defined encapsulated mass lesion attached to the roof of the third ventricle, isointense in T1WI with circumferential enhancement and hyperintense in T2WI. Gross total resection was performed. Histopathologic evaluation revealed a mature teratoma. There was no evidence of recurrence on follow up MRI at 2 years. Conclusion: Intracranial teratomas typically originate in midline structures from optic chiasm to pineal region. Presentation after the first two decades of life is exceptional. Complete surgical resection is the only curative treatment for pure mature teratomas. We report the case of a mature teratoma in a 37-year-old male with unusual radiological findings.
