Abstract. The assessment of historical data of small mountain torrents in Alpine catchment areas has shown a significant difference between the results of a regular hazard zone mapping and a thorough historical analysis. The Gemsbach in the Ostrach valley near Hinterstein (Municipality of Hindelang, southern Bavaria/Germany) serves, among others, as an example. A "traditional" hazard zone for the Gemsbach has been mapped in the 1990s. The oldest event included in the analysis was the flood of 1954. But historical data collected and analysed by the HANG-project shows flood-prone areas around th

Coal mining in Upper Bavaria ended in the 1960s and the mines were flooded. This study investigates the mining-influenced water and its environmental implications in the Hausham Mine, one of many unmonitored coal mines in the region and along the northern edge of the Molasse zone in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Water and solid samples were collected in the vicinity of the discharge area within a waste rock pile and downstream of a nearby lake. The samples were subjected to chemical and isotopic analysis, with a focus on the potential for natural attenuation. The mine waste discharge has h

The article is devoted to the problem of restoring administrative justice in the French occupation zone of Germany and the western sectors of Berlin after 1945. In each of the four occupation zones, this process took place with its own characteristics. But in each case, the restoration of administrative justice in various occupation zones was facilitated by previous historical and legal experience. Even before the Weimar period, administrative courts actually existed in most of the lands of the German Reich, but administrative legal protection at that time was not guided by any single concept,

The use of biochar is an important tool to improve soil fertility, reduce the negative environmental impacts of agriculture, and build up terrestrial carbon sinks. However, crop yield increases by biochar amendment were not shown consistently for fertile soils under temperate climate. Recent studies show that biochar is more likely to increase crop yields when applied in combination with nutrients to prepare biochar-based fertilizers. Here, we focused on the root-zone amendment of biochar combined with mineral fertilizers in a greenhouse trial with white cabbage (Brassica oleracea convar. Capi

Abstract:
The cutting of trees influences element turnover in the forest ecosystem. The reduction of plant uptake, as well as an increased mineralization and nitrification due to higher soil temperature and soil moisture, can lead to considerable losses of nutrients from the main rooting zone. This may result in a reduced soil fertility and a decrease in drinking water quality due to high nitrate concentrations in the seepage water. In Bavaria (Germany) selective cutting is preferred to clear cutting when initiating the regeneration of Norway spruce stands with European beech. This paper summarizes the
