Abstract:
Plants are inhabited by diverse species of bacteria and fungi, which affect plant health and fitness. Endophytes are bacteria or fungi that live within plant host tissues without causing symptoms of disease, and mediate important plant traits in agriculture, such as nutrient acquisition, disease resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance. However, we know little about the general ecology of endophytes, including which factors determine their compositions within plants. Seedborne transmission may represent an important source of bacterial and fungal endophytes, which can significantly impact the

They were also investigated in vivo by germinating the seeds in the presence of protease inhibitors used singly and in combination. Of the various zein components, γ-zein (27-kD) was the first

Radicle emergence and coleoptile emergence are important components of germination. The responses of these processes to external water potential in different tropical maize cultivars were examined using polyethylene glycol (PEG 4000). Low external water potential reduced the onset, rate and the final percentage of radicle and coleoptile emergence. The length of the radicle and shoot after seven days of imbibition was also reduced by low water potential. Cultivars differed in the rate and final percentage of germination, coleoptile emergence and radicle and coleoptile length at low water potent

Endosperm mobilization studies in cereal seeds are typically based on the view that α-amylase synthesis in the aleurone tissue is controlled by gibberellins from the germinating embryo. However, α-amylase is often produced by de-embryonated endosperm segments in the absence of added gibberellins. Two specific systems exhibiting this phenomenon were examined; 1) the ability of amino acids to promote α-amylase production in de-embryonated wild oat segments and, 2) autonomous starch hydrolysis (in the absense of exogenous GA₃ or amino acids) in de-embryonated barley endosperm halves. Abstract:
Nine cycles of recurrent selection for germination salt tolerance in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) were compared with their parental cultivar, 'Mesa-Sirsa'. Test seeds were produced in the same season and locale. Cycle 9 and Mesa-Sirsa showed 90% and 2.5% germination, respectively, in a -1.7 MPa NaCl medium. Cycle 8 germinated more vigorously compared to Mesa-Sirsa in stressed and non-stressed environments. Selection also enhanced germination speed and radicle length. Fresh seed and one year old seed showed similar percent germination. Scarification decreased germination in a saline solution. M
