<p> This paper examined patterns of decumulation and the role that health events and marital disruption play in forming those patterns. Study data were drawn from six biennial waves of the HRS (1998 - 2008), and merged RAND HRS data files for the period 1998–2008. The a priori expectation was that there will be variation in drawdown strategies households employ. Findings suggest that patterns of dissaving are heterogeneous. <p> I examine the effect of poverty on violent crime in the United States during the years between 2000 and 2012. My analysis contributes to the literature by utilizing state-level poverty rates as the main variable of interest, and directly studying its effect on violent crime rates. I use panel data and a group (state) and time fixed effects estimation method in the study. The results confirm prior research that concludes that poverty does not have a significant effect on violent crime.</p>

This dissertation consists of three separate but related essays that examine particular issues relating to insurance markets. The first essay, found public hospital presence and its associated charity care to have a significant impact upon the insurance choices of workers. Independent of income level, access to a public hospital system increases the probability that a worker is uninsured. The magnitude of the effect does depend upon income, with a ten percentage point increase in percent public beds causing a 5.0 point increase in the uninsured amongst the poor while the same change actually d

Abstract:

This paper uses quantitative methods to measure the impacts from selected shocks and evaluates the sensitivity of different welfare indicators to those shocks. The data sets from 2004--05 household and community surveys in the Central Highland of Angola are used for this study. Oaxaca decomposition analysis is conducted to examine how much of the differential in the values of welfare indicators can be explained by group differences in characteristics, and how much may be due to shock impacts.
