SUMMARY The Latin gerundive has three distinctive properties: (i) agreement with thematic object; (ii) ungrammaticality of lexical thematic subject; and (iii) inability to take both a specifier (determiner) and a complement while infinitives can have both. A case- theoretic account within the Minimalist framework of Chomsky (1995) explains all three of these properties at once. The oldest documents in Italic and Latin support the hypothesis that the gerundive is older than the gerund + acc object. Firstly, the traditional characterization of the English gerund, based on tense and aspect criteria, proves to be inadequate to establish its meaning. Firstly, most of these works have only focused on syntactic constructions in which the second participant, syntactic direct object, is a Noun Phrase. We claim that gerund complements occurring after main verbs (i.e. [subject] [main verb] [gerund]) can be explained by taking the notion of semantic transitivity as a reference. El estudio del gerundio en el aula no solo permite trabajar aspectos concretos que afectan a las formas no flexivas (por ejemplo, el tipo e identificación de sus sujetos), sino también poner en contacto al estudiante con estructuras sintácticas más generales: predicativos, complementos circunstanciales, cláusulas mínimas, etc. Por este motivo, los ejercicios con gerundios pueden ayudar a delimitar mejor ciertas funciones sintácticas básicas.

SUMMARY The article offers an analysis of the development of the gerund, as an alternative to the infinitive, with verbs of subject control, such as attempt, bear, decline, forbear, etc. In the course of the early Modern English period, and particularly during the first half of the 18th century, there is a steady increase in the use of the gerund with most of the verbs in question, and it is suggested that the ultimate reason behind this trend might be related to a parallel rise in the use of -ing forms in other areas of the grammar of English, and, more specifically, to the generalization of

This paper examines the process whereby the English gerund, originally an abstract deverbal noun of action, was reinterpreted as part of the verb system and acquired verbal properties, such as the ability to govern a direct object (e.g., by writing a letter). The analysis of the data reveals that by Early Middle English some gerundial patterns had become structurally ambiguous and thus served as the basis for the reanalysis of a nominal category as a verbal one. The actualization (Timberlake 1977) of the innovated underlying structure at the observable level of language use is also discussed,

A comparison of Old Spanish and present-day Spanish data provides evidence that reductive change in grammaticizing forms may be manifested not only as a diachronic process but also as a synchronic difference between formal and informal registers. Clitic climbing frequencies in Spanish auxiliary + gerund sequences have increased diachronically as part of a series of reductive changes and in tandem with construction frequency increases. In calculating construction frequency, both the token frequency of auxiliary + gerund sequences and their frequency relative to lone-standing gerunds turn out to

By analysing corpora from both domains, we found significant differences in the use of passive voice, present participles, negation and gerund constructions. In medical texts, the passive voice and present participles are more frequent, reflecting specialized discourse and precision. In contrast, negation and gerunds are more common in general texts, emphasizing the diversity of syntactic structures, and specific stylistic and argumentative effe

Although present participles in contemporary Portuguese no longer exist as verbal forms, in Old Portuguese we could find verbal occurrences of this form. In Old Portuguese, present participles could occur in typical adjectival contexts, while still maintaining verbal properties. Earlier research already classified the diachronically unstable gerund variation as involving a high fraction of mixed-usage speakers throughout the change, whereby the proportion of the conservative variant versus the progressive variant as observable in the linguistic output of individual language users superficially resembles the mean proportion as observable at the population level. Any previous attempt has proved un- conclusive, mainly because of the proliferation of ad hoc rules assumed to account for the nd-forms and even more because of the plethora of solutions. Instead of assuming another etymon for the sake of antago- nism, this paper intends to reassess the whole issue within Latin itself: as shown by non-standard syntacti- cal features of Plautinian and Late Latin, there is a morphological relatio

The Terms “Suffix” and “Desinence” among Polish Grammatical TermsThe Polish grammatical tradition seems unique in that the strict limiting of the use of the term “desinence, ending” to inflection and that of “suffix” to word formation is observed. This author arguesagainst an obligatory status of that differentiation. His opinion is that both terms should interchangeablybe used because a special term for an inflectional suffix (= “ending”) generally only produces redundant syntagms as is, for instance, the case with “genitive ending” = “inflectional genitive suffix”. This paper argues for a constructional approach to English progressives. On this view, progressivity is a construction-level property, rather than a lexical property of the ing forms that progressive verb phrases contain or of the auxiliary. The incompatibility of ing forms with state verbs in progressive constructions provides crucial evidence in support of the construction-based perspective, given that stative ing forms are fully acceptable in gerundive and other ing constructions. Of course, underlying this approach is the proposal that gerund is neutralizable with present participle (Huddl

This study investigates the historical evolution of non-finite verb forms in the English language, focusing on their morphological and syntactic transformation from Old English to Modern English. By analyzing the development of infinitives, participles, and gerunds across distinct historical periods—Old English, Middle English, and Modern English—the research highlights the shift from a synthetic to a more analytic linguistic system.
