Abstract:
The author explains Nöldeke's importance as a leading European orientalist, especially in the field of the history of the Qur'an, and the significance of his Geschichte Des Qorâns which was written in 1859. He discusses the expansion of this work by Nöldeke's pupils, comments on its importance, and describes the contents of the book. He then addresses Nöldeke's views, together with those of his collaborators and other relevant European scholars. After assessing the work he concludes that very little of Nöldeke's original ideas remain in the final revised edition and that Schwally contradicted

Abstract:
Theodor Nöldeke's work Geschichte des Qorâns comprises numerous ḥadīth transmissions, some of which the author accepted and others of which he rejected. In the process, he critiques and highlights what he considers to be the shortcomings of the Islamic scholarly methodology of ḥadīth criticism. This paper undertakes a comprehensive study which aims to bring to light the various methodological differences between the Islamic method of attesting ḥadīth reports and that of Nöldeke.

Almost 75 years after the initial publication of Theodor Nöldeke's Geschichte des Qorâns, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Zanjānī (1892–1941), an Iranian religious scholar, made a brief reference in the final chapter of his Tārīkh al-Qurʾān to an edition of Nöldeke's work revised by Schwally, Bergsträsser and Pretzl. He described Nöldeke as a great scholar and his Geschichte des Qorâns as a valuable contribution. Al-Zanjānī’s work also included an outline of Nöldeke's discussion on the order of the revelation of the suras. It is probably safe to say that al-Zanjānī’s book is the first independent work on th

The chronological reordering of the Qur'an remains one of the main entrance gates to the Muslim sacred text for researchers today. However, if chronology produces a strong sense of coherence by providing both an organising principle and a narrative context, its historical accuracy is difficult to assess. Recurrent criticism points to its dependence on traditional materials, the circularity of its argumentation, and the inability to appreciate, and account for, the present state of the Qur'anic text. This article engages these questions through a close reading of one of the most influential chr

Before discussing this matter, this paper also discusses a little about Mushaf ‘Usmānī or what is now called the Qur›an.
