Full textBibliography is a map and index of literature, science and culture as an activity that is founded and expressed through documentary testimonies (SERRAI, 2001). As a discipline, the Bibliography is not limited to the technical proposals of documentary enumeration, although these techniques are the matrix for the development of practical and conceptual models for organization and mediation of documents along different historical-cultural contexts. Therefore, in addition to the enumerative aspect of the documents, Bibliography is the scheme of their reality. It is what the Italian bibliographer Alfredo Serrai (2001) calls an ordered evidence of references to everything that has already been written and eventually published or reproduced. Constituted by theoretical, practical and discursive interfaces, the Bibliography bases the documentary treatment from the point of view of its description, classification, indexation, circulation and mediation. The Bibliography has a long history, whose eminence lies in the contributions of Swiss scientist, scholar and bibliographer, Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), and his major bibliographical project: Bibliotheca Universalis (1545) and the Pandectae (1548, 1549). In this sense, the present research is marked by the search of the bibliographical method of Conrad Gesner, having for the north the following questions: What is the documentary structure of Bibliotheca Universalis and Pandectae? What is the nature, dimension and principle of works? What is the gesnerian bibliographical method? What is the relationship between Gesner\'s bibliographical method and the foundations and echoes of Bibliography as a discipline? In this perspective our objectives are: 1) to map the documentary structure of Bibliotheca Universalis and Pandectae; 2) to characterize the nature, dimention and principle of the works; 3) identify, present and discuss the gesnerian bibliographical method; 4) to position, in a preliminary way, the relation between the gesnerian bibliographical method and the foundations and echoes of Bibliography as a discipline. In order to do so, the research goes through the bibliographical and documentary field, having as bibliographical contribution notably the Italian scientific literature in the context of bibliographical studies and the historical-documentary analysis of the original edition of Bibliotheca Universalis (1545) and Pandectae (1548, 1549). Therefore, such editions are both the source and object of the research. Conrad Gesner delineated the bibliographical practices of Modern Europe and, in this sense, he is considered the father of the Bibliography and founder of the bibliographical discipline. The gesnerian bibliographical method is a method of bibliographical ordering and organization of knowledge, of theoretical and applied bases, that is configured by the double dimensionality: 1) the first, of a descriptive-repertoiral character, is based on bibliographical selection and alphabetic-nominal ordering; 2) the second, of a taxonomical, indicial and semantical character, is based on the multilevel organization of knowledge in universal and particular hierarchies: from the more general class (the Partitions) to the loci communes - which represent the finer, specific and closely related semantic nucleus arguments and the concepts that make up the documents. It concludes that the historical-interpretative dimension of information and of the document, which permeates the gesnerian gesture and bibliographical method, cannot be neglected for a retrospective, critical and at the same time current understanding of the informational and documentary field.

This work has an objective to analyze the appearing of petroleum industry on XIX century, from several researches which had been realized to obtain new sources of combustibles by distillation of mineral coal, vegetal and petroleum, including for illumination. They tried to analyze specifically the research contributions of Abraham Gesner (1846 – 1854) related to kerosene production, on a period which were proliferated researches related to development of new kind of combustibles. The development of this study was guided mainly on the analyze of the published work by Gesner, A Practical Treatise on Coal, Petroleum and Other Distilled Oils, where this publication became the main reference job for installation of petroleum distillery on second half of XIX century, on Unites States. It is possible to evidence with the publication of his book, Gesner, on the same time he had as a goal to make this job a practical manual for the installation and production of oils from the distillation of coal, bitume and petroleum, it also aimed to provide answers to his opponents on the several judicial disputes related to patents where he was involved

Gloxiniinae have 21 genera and about 160 species. In Brazil, Gloxiniinae has 16 species, distributed in eight genera, three of which are endemic, generally found in rock outcrops of cerrado, rupestrian fields or gallery forests. We studied the pollen grains of ten Brazilian Gloxiniinae (Gesneriaceae) belonging to the genera: Chautemsia A.O.Araujo & V.C.Souza (1 sp.), Gloxinia L'Hér. (3 spp.), Goyazia Taub. (2 spp.), Mandirola Decne. (3 spp.) and Seemannia Regel (1 sp.) with the aim of contributing to the taxonomic characterization of the group and a better delimitation of the genera and/or species, focusing on the Mandirola-Goyazia complex populations. The species of this complex are not well delimited in taxonomic studies and phylogeny works, and this difficulty can be explained by the sympatric distribution, and the floral morphology and phenology very similar. The pollen grains were acetolysed, measured, photographed under light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and described qualitatively. The quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive and multivariate statistics. We observed for the Brazilian Gloxiniinae species variations on the amb, shape, length and width colpi, colpi end, margo, endoaperture and ornamentation. For the 36 natural populations of Mandirola and Goyazia, qualitative data such as number and type of apertures, endoaperture, margo, ornamentaion and exine utrastructure are very similar, but we identify differences in amb, shape, length and width of colpi and the colpi ends. We also analyzed the pollen morphology of the natural hybrid Mandirola X Goyazia and its possible parents (Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso), and we observed similar pollen characteristics, with variations for amb, shape, colpi ends and exine ornamentation. There are pollen morphology characters that allow to separate the Gloxiniiinae species; the populations of Mandirola and Goyazia are stenopalynous, and the natural hybrid has differences in the exine ornamentation not observed in its possible parental.

Full textThe purpose of this dissertation is the analysis of some aspects presented in Conrad Gesner´s Historia animalium (1551-1558), such as some information included in animal´s descriptions, its sources and images, as a vehicle of knowledge transmission. We intend to demonstrate that the content in Gesner´s work, as well as in his contemporary fellows, showed particular features which were consisted not only of anatomical and physiological animal´s descriptions, but they were especially comprised of information which today would be considered additional, as for example, what the ancients would say about each animal, the legends, the fables, its use in medicine, in culinary, in art, etc. All this correlated information was called, by some scholars of this period, the emblematic world view and they determined the scope of animal History in the sixteenth century. In order to demonstrate the interrelated information in Gesner´s writings, we selected not only his writings but also some works of other writers. One of them is Andrea Alciati´s Emblematum Libellus (1531), to which is attributed the dissemination of the emblems - a group of text and image designed to be deciphered, bringing intricate topics such as religion, love, betrayal, politics, moral, among others, which were widely covered in Gesner´s work. We also selected some examples of medieval bestiary to demonstrate how animals were described and illustrated in this kind of work, as well as Ovid´s (43 a.C 17 d.C) Ars Amatoria and the Methamorphoses, aiming at investigating this type of literature and, in later editions, the kind of images involving animals in these poems, in order to accomplish the case study about the mythical beast known as the Minotaur

Full textAn accurate taxonomy and knowledge of species limits is of great importance in endemic species-rich biodiversity hotspots like the Caribbean. Indeed, conflicting species limits can alter biodiversity estimates and influence the decisions taken on conservation issues. The genera Gesneria and Rhytidophyllum constitute the main representatives of the Caribbean Gesneriaceae and comprise a few species with unclear boundaries as well as species having several recognized subspecies. Gesneria viridiflora (Decne.) Kuntze is a good example of the latter and consists of four geographically isolated subspecies that possess similar but variable vegetative and reproductive characters. We conducted a thorough investigation of species delimitation in this species complex using an integrative taxonomic approach that includes morphology, genetics and bioclimatic data. Qualitative and quantitative morphological data obtained from herbarium specimens were used to circumscribe morphologically distinct groups using a principal coordinates analysis. These groups were then tested at the genetic level using a Bayesian Phylogenetics and Phylogeography (BPP) species delimitation approach based on four nuclear regions. Bioclimatic multivariate analyses of temperature and precipitation variables obtained from occurrence data were used to compare the groups delimited by morphological and genetic data. The results suggest the presence of five distinct species in this complex. Four of these broadly correspond to the actually defined subspecies: G. quisqueyana, G. sintenisii, G. sylvicola and G. viridiflora. An additional highly endemic species was recognized, G. acrochordonanthe, that consists of the populations found at the Massif de la Hotte in Southwestern Haiti. A distribution map, a table of the new taxonomy and an identification key to the species are provided. The new taxonomy proposed in this study shows an unsuspected species endemism in some regions of the Caribbean biodiversity hotspot and underlines the importance of investigating species boundaries in diversified groups containing taxa with poorly understood boundaries.
Alexandre, Hermine.
Full textBackground: Gesneria and Rhytidophyllum (Gesneriaceae) are two genera endemic to the Antilles that underwent an important diversification and that present a great vari- ability in pollination modes with regard to specific floral traits. Hummingbird specialists harbour red tubular flowers while bat specialists and generalists have campanulate (i.e., bell shaped) flowers with pale colours. Bat pollination (excluding or not hummingbirds) evolved multiple times independently in this group. These plants are thus a good model to study the relationship between the evolution of pollination mode and ecological and species diversification. To understand these relationships, we studied the genetic basis of pollination mode transition and the link between pollination mode and bioclimatic niches diversification. Methods: We performed a QTL analysis to detect genomic regions underlying the floral traits involved in the pollination syndrome transition between Rhytidophyllum auriculatum (a generalist species) and Rhytidophyllum rupincola (a hummingbird specialist). Also, we analysed the consequence of pollination mode transitions (which represent the biotic part of ecological niches) on bioclimatic niches evolution in Gesneria and Rhytidophyllum. Then, we tested whether environmental changes can result in patterns of phylogenetic bioclimatic niche conservatism through time. Results: The QTLs analysis showed that corolla colour and nectar volume are both based on one major QTL, while corolla shape is determined by a more complex genetic architecture involving several unlinked QTLs. These Antillean Gesneriaceae were found to have a pattern of phylogenetic (bioclimatic) niche conservatism (PNC) and their niche evolution was found to be independent from pollination strategies. Overall, the plants were found to have relatively widespread bioclimatic niches. Finally, we partially confirmed the hypothesis that adapting to temporally variable environment might cause both species generalization and PNC pattern. Conclusion: Genetic independence of floral traits might have facilitated pollination syn- dromes evolution by reducing genetic constraints. However, the overlapping distribution of hummingbirds and bats do not represent an ecological opportunity that could explain re- peated evolutions toward bat pollination. However, environmental perturbations causing regular pollinator populations collapses could explain the advantage for plants to favour generalist strategies.
