The prime objective of this dissertation is to analyze the organizational psychological contract, through a case study of Mozambique Electricity Company (EDM) employees in Mozambique. In one perspective, employee psychological contract fulfillment (the degree to which an employee believes his or her organization has fulfilled its employer obligations) was examined. At the other hand, the perception of the employee regarding the justice between the employer and the employee (and vice-versa) and the degree of the overall satisfaction of the employee were evaluated. The empiric study was based on a questionnaire to employees at various level of organizational structure at the EDM Headquarters in the capital city of Mozambique, Maputo. The results highlight that the relational contract is the most preferred to evaluate the employee and employer psychological contract fulfillment. Although the relational contract was the most preferred, the degree of perception of the employees is still very low. The degree of relationship between the employees and the employer is low.

This study is concerned with the dynamics of governance of public transports in the metropolitan area of Maputo. It is based on the case of one of the public transport providers in the city, the Maputo Municipal Public Transport Company and on the analysis of its stakeholders (passengers and employees) perception about its functioning. It seeks to their level of satisfaction with the service and to identify indicators that may be used for the improvement of the service quality. In the study, we adopted a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative (semi-structured interviews, direct observation and document analysis) and quantitative data (surveys to users and employees). By opting for the development of the case study about Maputo Municipal Public Transport Company, we were able to capture in-depth knowledge that can serve as a basis for a wide understanding of the operation of state-owned enterprises and their capacity to provide public services that meet citizen‘s needs. The results of this research, considering the case of the EMTPM, EP, show that the institutional and legal framework of state-owned enterprises and the control and oversight mechanisms by the government exacerbate the imperative of fulfilling a social and political role. This imperative exceeds the professionalization and profitability requirements for any state-owned enterprise, and it has been constraining the competitiveness of public companies in what regards innovation and development. This ultimately results in the State's option for another development model to overcome the current public transport problems - the public-private partnerships with competitors from the private sector. Due to this weakness of EMTPM, EP, in general, passengers are dissatisfied with the services of this company in the following indicators: compliance with schedules, travel times and number of buses in operation (reliability); bus cleaning (comfort); respect for bus capacity (safety); bus structure (access stairs) not suitable for people with low/mobility (accessibility), and courtesy of crew, ease of filing complaints, and ability of the driver and / or collector to solve problems (communication).

Full textThis paper aims to identify the main barriers faced by micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in the city of Matola. As such, there is a theoretical framework about the barriers faced by MSEs and on government policies and instruments to support enterprises of this size. The theoretical foundation supported the development of a triangulation of empirical research based on two phases. The first phase consisted of collecting data from 21 micro and small businesses, through interviews where later became the identification of the main barriers faced by the interviewees and then led the second phase of fieldwork was that the interviews with government entities in order to know what they have done to minimize or mitigate the barriers identified by entrepreneurs. The results show that the barriers to financing and competition are the main barriers faced by MSEs in Matola and that barriers vary according to branch of activity of enterprises. The paper will serve to enrich the state of the art on the theme of micro and small enterprises and especially will help meet the shortage of academic research in Mozambique.
Sousa, Rafael José Reis de. "A discussion on the Quatenus platform as well as on the internationalization process applied to other technological products."
There are few technological cases involving Mozambique in the literature. This study attempted to fill that gap. Do Mozambican technology companies adopt the same positioning, in comparison to those adopted in other countries with different characteristics (social, economic, political and cultural), for example Portugal? A case study about a company’s necessity to adapt its positioning, taking into account the internal and external context was created – the case of the Quatenus platform. On the other hand, since 2010, due to the economic crisis, Portugal has fought against youth unemployment by promoting an entrepreneurship mind-set. This in turn has created thousands of start-ups. Only 10% of these, however, export therefore the government has created a strategy to increase these numbers. It is important to identify the factors that influence these companies to achieve internationalization success (including Mozambique). What factors need to be taken into account in order for companies to succeed in NTBF (New technology-based firms) internationalization? To answer this question this study includes four case studies, one of them being the above mentioned Quatenus platform case, as well as 39 questionnaires filled in by business persons from different Portuguese technological companies. This study contributes also with the author’s auto-ethnographic perspective, who worked in Mozambique for around two years. Additionally, the study contributes to a discussion about Portuguese technology companies that often depend on internationalization to succeed. We confirm the data within the existing literature, highlighting the following NTBF’s internationalization factors: networking, qualified human resources, management capabilities, efficient knowledge creation, proactivity, business localization and the ability to adjust the structure to the constantly evolving external context

Full textThe set of political-administrative reforms that Mozambique has been carrying out in the context of market liberalization, in the late 1980s, gave another dynamic to the economy sector and stimulated national investment and beyond. In effect, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises has grown, living up to the Government's effort to encourage and support business initiatives through various policies in which appears the Strategy for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises in Mozambique (2007 - 2022) whose role is considered of great importance in the dynamism of the national economy. Therefore, it is in this context of the assessment of the business environment provided by the Mozambican Government that the present work entitled “Challenges Inherent to the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises in Maputo City - Mozambique” was developed, looking at the specific case of the company SOJITZ Maputo Cellulose , Lda. As this is a qualitative research, the data required in this case study were obtained, analyzed and interpreted using semi-structured interviews, literature reviews and content analysis, in which it was concluded that the main challenge inherent in the development of SOJITZ Maputo Cellulose, Lda is business innovation, as it is the business development block that is most influenced by the difficulties that the business environment offers to Small and Medium Enterprises in the City of Maputo - Mozambique. Furthermore, the results obtained reveal that the difficulties caused by the local business environment are due to the existing regulations, financial situation, labor market, access to markets and connections - Small and Medium Enterprises network.

This master's dissertation presents a study that aims to plan and manage the Maputo Lisbon route through the analysis of factors that influence its design and the air transport sector, from the external analysis or the market environment (the PESTEL analysis) and internal analysis, which concerns the part of the evaluation of competitors, passing through the SWOT analysis and devising strategies in order to attract passengers, improve services and deal with the adversities that arise along the process in order to maintain the route. This investigation also aims to provide a complete and accurate study that helps professionals in the aeronautical sector, especially employees who work in the commercial department, but also to academic students, to have a general understanding of the procedures and factors that govern planning an air route, in addition to providing relevant information in terms of support in the decision-making process. The methodology applied in this dissertation was the case study and semi-structured interview, because it allows the researcher to further deepen the knowledge about a certain entity and extract information that in turn results in a holistically broad scope research and as result, three percent growth in passenger transport is expected and a larger share in its main hub. The dissertation is outlined in eight chapters, in which the first is dedicated to the introductory part of it, in the second chapter the literature review is made addressing topics related to marketing, specifically the planning of an air route, such as the analysis of the general and specific environment, Swot analysis and marketing objectives, based on the Kotler model. The last two chapters address the research methodology used, analysis of data collected through the implemented research and the main conclusions drawn, respectively.

Full textBay of Maputo presents beauty, biodiversity and productivity originating pressure on the coastal resources and speeding up the degradation of the quality in the area. Throughout the last years jibs of shoreline in beaches of Costa do Sol occurred, due to insufficiency in sedimentary supply to the coastal drift. The aim of this study is to determine the evolution of the shoreline and sedimentary transport type verified in Costa do Sol - City of Maputo, in 37 years, in approximately 6 km extension, in the Polana beach to Costa do Sol. Different methods to calculate shoreline evolution rates exist. In this work aerial photograph analysis was used. The results indicate that in this period the phenomena’s of jib was verified. From 1996 to the 2006 the jib rates had been more significant in the two analyzed sectors. The erosive trends is mainly verified in of the Praia da Polana, Miramar, Clube Marítimo, ATCM, Bairro de Triunfo and Costa Sol contributing for the retreat of the shoreline, with a maximum erosion rates of - 2,32 m/year. The average shoreline evolution rates have been calculated between -0.53 and -0.62 m/year for 1969/1996 and 1996/2006 respectively and are within in interval verified in previous studies. The current trend shoreline behaviour, in beaches of Costa do Sol, in general, tends for erosion aggravation towards North. Erosion is related to the lack of sedimentary supply, harnessed for the action dams, the dredging of the Canal de Xefina and the sediment retention at coastal protections, leading to the degradation of the natural structures of coastal protection, mainly to the dune ridge between the dry beach and the Avenida Marginal. The implementation of the Integrated Program for the Coastal Zones (PGIZC) for this coastal area faces political constraints, technician-administrative and of coordination between interested organisms, whose activities have negative consequences for the hydrodynamic conditions of the Bay of Maputo. These constraints could be minimized and/or surpassed by application of management and control instruments: legislation, regulations of the drawn plans of development. The solutions proposed to mitigate the problem of coastal erosion are: rehabilitation of the engineering structural - goynes and revetment, combined with the artificial beach replenishment to locations currently suffering erosion; and protection, rehabilitation and dune grassing. The requalification of the maritime edge, based in plans of territorial management plans and intensification of shares of environmental education was considered necessary for transversal sectors of the society, in particular for the beach users and local population.

Full textMozambique is a country rich in natural resources, in which the economy is heavily supplied through foreign investment. The objective of the study, therefore, was to seek opportunities for the internationalization of Portuguese companies through the Mozambican market. This dissertation is based on the state of Sumol + Compal’s case and supported by its literature revision. It was possible to see, through it, that companies seek internationally in search of new opportunities, and in creating an added value. The case study allowed the conclusion, based on an external and internal analysis, that there are opportunities in the Mozambican market. These may include taking advantage of the needs that will be generated in the country by large investments in the near future (example: Oil & Gas), taking advantage of Mozambique's natural wealth, as well as taking advantage of the SADC market from Mozambique, among others. Sumol + Compal, has benefited from positive growth in its project in Mozambique, as a result of the acquired market knowledge and good intercultural management that has been carried out over the past few years. However, there are still many opportunities to be explored both by Sumol + Compal, and in the Mozambican market in general by other Portuguese companies that intend to internationalize.

Full textMotherhood is one of the most multifaceted experiences for mankind and more intense for women, specifically, given the physiological element of the gestational period. The profound transformations of modern medicine circumscribed the discourse on motherhood to epidemiology. However, beyond the Western world, biomedicine is introduced later and ties in the abundant mix of therapies that women simultaneously seek for managing maternity. This profusion of medical systems occurs in structuring dimensions of individuals: beliefs, family, modern medicine and traditional medicine. It is imperative to understand the sociocultural contours in women's decision-making processes in managing maternity. Using Bourdieu's capital theory, the goal of this study is to examine the relationship between capitals and medical pluralism to demonstrate the tendency for educational and economic capitals to become blurred in decision-making processes, reiterating how profound the influence of cultural and symbolic capitals is. Women’s agency will depend on their identity, life story and socio-economic and cultural context. The way in which healthy motherhood is perceived is a gateway to understand practices. Women's priorities and actions are shaped by their experiences of power and resources. This has implications for research and efforts to improve and sustain health outcomes. To operationalize the study hypothesis two groups of women were interviewed in opposing social classes (regarding educational and economic capitals). The two groups of women interviewed differentiated by the extreme variation in structural factors allowed for the assessment on whether/how sociocultural factors (cultural and symbolic capitals) would be explanatory in trends of decision-making processes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the testimony of 39 women from Maputo and Maputo City Provinces in Mozambique was used in the results presented here.

Full textCoastal zones are sensitive to morphological changes, and extremely vulnerable to naturally occurring physical processes as well as to direct and indirect human impacts. The human pressure on the coastal and sea resources has been increasing steadily over the past decades, and has in many coastal regions led to a noticeable degradation of the environmental quality. The coastal zone of capital of Mozambique, Maputo-Cidade- the topic of this case study – faces at present serious environmental problems. These problems, which concern in particular pollution and erosion, urgently require the development and implementation of adequate management plans and programmes. Following a comprehensive description of the key characteristics of the study area, the present study attempts to identify the existing constraints in the use of the area’s resources as well as to identify recommendations in terms of planning policies and concrete planning actions to be undertaken. This study addresses “Coastal Zone Management and Planning” an integrated approached of Environmental Planning, Natural Resources Management, and Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Planning.

Moreover, the coexistence of extreme poverty phenomena with an emerging consuming society has been potentiating social tensions. The present study aims to analyze how are structured in an organizational context, in a framework of foreign investment encouragement and high social inequalities. This is a comparative study of companies run by Portuguese, Chinese and Mozambican managers. Thus, we intend to analyze the impact on organizational context of cultural differences and unequal distribution of power resources, on the social actors behavior representations of the Other. Recovering a contemporary debate from the birth of sociology, we intend to analyze how culture and power influence the behavior of individuals, in this case in Maputo organizational contexts. Although there were differences between groups structured in their culture of origin, there were also different attitudes and representation systems based on the activity sector or the hierarchy level in organizations, cutting across all nationalities.

Full textThis paper aims to evaluate the degree of implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Mozambican companies. To this end, fifteen companies, based in Maputo, were selected to respond to an inquiry, applied in person by the author. As might be expected, there was a disparity in the degree of CSR implementation between the types of firms studied: large firms and multinationals had a higher level of implementation than micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. Therefore, to accelerate the degree of CSR implementation in Mozambique, it is suggested that multinational companies operating in Mozambique incorporate and disseminate internally and externally these practices on a continuous basis in order to positively influence competitors and other companies, of their supply chain, where they will eventually have more influence. It is also suggested that there should be greater awareness or generalized training on these issues by systematically revealing new international strategies, policies and practices. It seems to be possible to conclude that the importance given to CSR by Mozambican companies is currently insignificant, even though there are punctual considerable measures. The (growing) presence of multinationals can be a source of acceleration, in the contribution of companies to sustainable development and consequent desirable balance between the economic, social and environmental pillars.

Full textThe central objective of this project is to propose a Balanced Scorecard (BSC) model for Fundação Ariel. In this context, the project presents the BSC approach, highlighting its main characteristics (including those related to BSC for organizations of the Third Sector) and a BSC proposal, which is expected to promote the efficiency and effectiveness of Fundação Ariel programmatic and operational processes considered essential for the successful implementation of its strategy, making it (the Ariel Foundation) more "attractive" for potential donors. The proposal development process was attended by members of strategic management and intermediate management teams and included a thorough review process of the Strategic Plan to verify its consistency and alignment with the priorities set by the Government and donors for the areas of intervention of Fundação Ariel. It also included the clarification of the organizational strategy and the search for consensus on the expectations of performance and unity around the strategy. This process resulted in the clarification of the strategic objectives and initiatives, clarification of the integration and complementarity between the technical and the operational activities of Fundação Ariel, the alignment of its performance related expectations and in the identification of the strategic initiatives that effectively drive the organization towards its mission and indicators related to these initiatives. The process also led to the strengthening of the ownership of the strategy by several organizational actors and to the verification of the applicability of some theories about the BSC.

Full textThe objective of this study is to understand the demand-side factors that influence access to bank financing by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing industry. The factors examined were the characteristics of managers (gender, age, experience, and education), SMEs (age, size, gross income, and equity), and financial management practices (accounting, business plan, credit purchases, and internet purchases). Few studies look at these factors in the context of developing economies. The study used the mixed method - sequential explanatory approach, starting with quantitative research to a sample of 347 SMEs followed by qualitative research (30 SMEs), to strengthen the interpretation of the results. The use of descriptive statistics, inference, and logistic regression served as the basis for the analysis of the results. The results show that manager experience (95% statistical significance), firm size, gross profit and equity (90% statistical significance), are determinants for access to bank credit, with the impact of the remaining variables being non-significant. The thematic analysis identified risk tolerance, financial literacy, financial management skills, terms offered, quality of services, lessons learned, cultural aspects, managers' beliefs and internal aspects. The study focuses on the Mozambican market, drawing attention to the need to understand these determinants, which are crucial to inform effective strategies and instruments. One of the implications for policy is the need to implement holistic approaches that prioritize the demand-side factors.

Full textbusiness world is transforming deeply. Topics such as globalization, flexibility, competitiveness and new forms of work organization are ensuring a place in the analysis of who works or study organizations. People who work in organizations become a source of greater interest because they are the contributors that enable competitive advantage in organizations. These transformations generate a complex environment, characterized by technological and scientific advances, changes of concept, values and breakdown of paradigms that guide all segments of society. In the globalized turbulent environment, where social interactions occur among people from different regions and countries, the word culture emerges as one of the fundamental variables for understanding organizational phenomena. More and more people are circulating and there are clashes between cultures, ways of thinking and doing. The leader has the key to corporate cohesion, trying to create a group rather than several individuals. The challenge is to get to know people better, their thoughts, their hopes, their fears, what they value and value most. More and more people are the largest assets of the company.

This research addresses the longitudinal study of the suitability of the organizational structure to the business and focuses on the component of information systems. The problem situation that is intended to be improved is the implementation of information technology to consolidate the interactions of information systems inherent to the internal business processes. Subsequently, connections of these information systems with the counterparts from suppliers and customers are considered, in an organization that is in a specific context, in order to gain distinct skills in the face of the competition. The research interest in Mozambique is induced by the fact that a country that is experiencing a transformational dynamics of its competitive environment is a challenge for local organizations, particularly with regard to the improvement of the competitive skills to face the intensity of competition resulting from the transition from a centrally planned economy into a liberal one. The methodological resource used was the Soft Systems Methodology, which was operationalised through a qualitative strategy of longitudinal case study. The company Petróleos de Moçambique, S.A.R.L. (PETROMOC) was taken as the case study, the organizations business was used as units of analysis, the organizational structure as subunit and the information systems based on information technologies (IS/IT) as sub-subunit. The main outcome from this research is a complete list of activities in the model and in the case as well as their respective differences, accounting for the systematically desirable and culturally feasible alternatives and possibilities to improve the problem situation. The contribution of the study findings are summarized as follows: i) for the practice, the study has provided a list of changes to be made in the case studied, should the model be implemented. A highlight should be given to the in particular d to the importance of this contribution, given that the academic degree that motivates and accommodates this research is a Doctor of Business Administration, ii) for the theory, the procedures for developing and validating the model have provided a richer and more defensible model than others, as to consistency and adequacy, iii) finally, for the research, the SSM has been operationalized as a methodological resource that is recognized by the scientific community. This fact lends credibility to the research upon this community. The procedures for verifying the quality of case study under the guidance of SSM concerned two criteria, in particular the relevance of the model and competence in its design.
