Full textOur research has been carried out as a part of the RNRT project RECIS in collaboration with FT R&D and the INRIA. The goal of this project is to study different techniques to enrich multimedia content access services. We created an audiovisual annotation model : E-SIA. This model represents documents fragments, annotations as well as annotation structuring elements as graph. The model enables to document and guide annotation providing in meantime a large degree of freedom to users. We have developed a client-server prototype application enabling manual and automatic video annotation as well as the navigation an search in these annotations. We have extended our annotation model in order to create an experience tracing, capitalization and reuse framework: Trèfle (Club). This model enables to trace in a contextual manner the use of a computer program following a use and an observation model in a graph. We consider that in a computer program users manipulate objects using procedures

Full textA paper-document is a complex and multi-layered object, which carries information on different levels. Among these levels, the layout of the page highly determines the usability and the visual readability of documents. In order to analyse the document, an extraction of the structures physical, functional, and logical, has to be performed. Our project is to extend this document approach to web sites, hence assimilated as documents with informational structure. We will show that a web site, with a consistent set of pages and hypertext links, could indeed be comprehended as such a type of document. In an experimental study, we used an eye-tracking device to record and analyse the eye path, first on web pages (considered as document-images) and then on web documents. This approach allows new openings on the treatment of documents based on a comprehensive analysis and understanding of document structure

Full textThis thesis focuses on extracting and managing information in the case of Arabic that is an oriental and Semitic language. This language is different from Western languages especially at the morphology and spelling variations. Indeed, the performance of information retrieval systems in the arabic language is still problematic. For this reason, we are interested in studying the performance of search engines which is the most famous between 2006 and 2010, on a corpus of a thousand arabic documents. We found that morphological analysis is not taken in consideration in these engines. Morphological analysis of an arabic word is to identify its morphemes, its affixes, its model and its root. We proposed a comparative study of features of extracting morphological methods from an Arabic word. This study was performed on corpus iSPEDAL using the Eval system that we have also proposed in this thesis. ISPEDAL is a structured and progressive dictionary of Arabic language that is easily exploitable by using an appropriate query language. It is supplied automatically from traditional dictionaries or any other corpus. Eval system can implement the features of extracting morphological methods from an arabic word in a unique environment while respecting the specificity of each one. This study has identified a group of methods that have good performance in this domain. The integration of this group in the various search engines can improve the performance of information retrieval in Arabic language. This thesis was realized under scientific research cooperation between France and Lebanon “CEDAR” in the project RIMA (Recherche intelligente d’information multimédia multilingue arabe)

Full textSearching for and managing multimedia documents rely on an information searching System able to locale a set of data satisfying a request among a large data base. Our thesis deals more specifically with textual and video documents. Concerning the textual documents, the combination of a linguistic approach (standardization and lemmatisation) with a statistical approach simplifies the searching process. The statistical approach starts a quick search among the corpus to filter the documents in order to extract the relevant ones. The statistical approach applied to the remaining documents is based on the meaningful linguistic units roots. Video documents' searching requires pre-processing of every document. Video segmentation helps to identify the representative frames of the document. In order to save time, the search itself is performed among the pre-processed documents. Once the textual and video documents have been selected and prepared, a similarity rate is computed for every document compared to the question document. This computation depends on the linguistic units and frames positions, on their neighbourhood and frequency and on the documents sizes. The model proposed in the thesis shows that the combination of these approaches builds an efficient, robust and precise information searching System

Full textThe knowledge society is based on three axes: the diffusion and use of information via new technologies, the deduction of knowledge induced by this information and the economic impacts which can result from this information. To offer to the actors and more particularly to the "decision makers" of this society some tools which enable them to produce and manage "knowledge" or at least "elements of knowledge" seem to be rather difficult to ensure. This difficulty is due to the dynamism of the environment and the diversity of factors influencing the information production, extraction and communication. Indeed, this information is included in documents which are collected from disseminated sources (Internet, Workflow, numerical libraries, etc. ). These documents are thus heterogeneous on the content and on the form (they can be related to various fields, they can be more or less structured, they can have various structures, they contain several type of media, are stored in several type of supports, etc). The current challenges are to conceive new applications to exploit this document heterogeneity. Having in mind these needs, the work presented in my thesis, aims to face these challenges and in particular at proposing solutions in order "to manage and create knowledge" starting from the integration of all information available on the heterogeneous documents. The handling of multimedia documents repositories constitutes the applicative framework of our proposals. Our approach is articulated around three complementary axes: (1) the representation, (2) storage (or integration) and (3) exploitation of the heterogeneous documents. Documents representation is related to the determination of information that must be preserved and the way according to which they must be organized to offer better apprehending and envisaging of their uses. The solution that we chose to meet these needs bases on the proposal for a documents model which integrates several overlapping and complementary levels of description (a generic layer and a specific one, a logical description and a semantic one). .

Full textThe aim of this research is to contribute to the document image classification problem. More specifically, these studies address digitizing company issues which objective is to provide the digital version of paper document with information relating to them. Given the diversity of documents, information extraction can be complex. This is why the classification and the indexing of documents are often performed manually. This research provides several solutions based on knowledge of the images that the user has. The first contribution of this thesis is a method for classifying interactively document images, where the content of documents and classes are unknown. The second contribution of this work is a new technique for document image retrieval by giving one example of researched document. This technique is based on the extraction and matching of interest points. The last contribution of this thesis is a method for classifying document images by using bags of visual words techniques

Full textThe most of DMS are based on data models developed by commercial vendors, which avoid any extension and generalization. This means an insufficient level of granularity for representing document elements and versions, as well as to guarantee the links intra-documents. Moreover, HTTP servers are considered as "passives" respect to the maintenance of coherence for a document database. : We propose a pragmatic and general solution as a double modeling allowing to describe the documents, links and versions with a fine granularity. Besides, we propose an execution model based on active rules. An architecture has been proposed to migrate the HTTP servers to active servers of documents. A classification was built on the basis of the identification of the whole events sensitive to cause mstab1hty of the links and versions. Finally, we have built an architecture based on active components in order to enhance the functionalities of HTTP servers

Full textContext-awareness qualifies computing systems which seek to adapt their overall behavior to a set of information, called the context of use. In spite of their heterogeneity, the continuous evolution of mobile devices (MD) towards multipurpose, multi-sensors,a nd Web-enabled devices, transforms them into the ideal environment for context-aware applications. MDs are becoming, thanks to their popularity, the main tool for creating personal multimedia documents (PMD). In this new scenario, high level context information can also play an important role. In fact, information related to the context in which the document was capture or created can offer information rich enough to describe, and, thereafter, identify such documents. This work addresses the intersection of two research domains : Context-aware Computing and Multimedia Management. Context-awareness in the management of PMD is a new research approach, where the proposition of semantic models for representing contextual information and of mechanisms for acquiring and exploiting the high-level information are still unsolved problems. We propose a new context-aware architecture for the management of PMD called CoMMediA (Context-aware Mobile Multimedia Architecture) which is inspired by frameworks oriented to the adaptation of Mobile Information Systems. Our contributions consists of : I) a semantic model for representing multimedia metadata (Context Multimedia), described in OWL and following a new notion of context, II) an adaptative middleware for context acquisition and multimedia creation (called DevAC), which takes into account the heterogeneity and the intrinsic limitations of MDs during the deployment of mobile applications, and III) a platform that enriches contextual metadata (ContextAnnotator). Our objective is to promote the automatic production of metadata, and also to propose mechanisms for the integrating this high-level and semantic metadata in the processes of organization, annotation, sharing, and keyword-based retrieval of DMP. Moreover, DevAC and our mobile applications of DMP management are based on a component middleware and a semantic description of services. The ultimate goal is to assist developers in the development and deployment of multimedia and context-aware applications which can be adapted according to the models of users' MDs, without the need to rewrite their code

Full textIn this thesis manuscript we propose a generic model, called MSDM (Multi-Structured Document Model), which allows integrating the specific characteristics of the multi-structured documents in an appropriate representation. In the MSDM model several important concepts have been defined in order to facilitate the multi-structured documents exploitation. Using this model we have proposed an XML-based formalism, called MultiX, allowing the multi-structured document serialization. We have also explored the multi-structured document exploitation in the information retrieval context. In order to allow efficient querying possibilities on MultiX documents, we have extended the XQuery language by developing a specific functions library. These functions allow a more efficient and easy exploration of the multi-structured documents encoded in the MultiX formalism. To validate our propositions we have implemented a specific framework which we have built around an implementation of the MSDM model

Full textThe Semantic Web is an extension of the current web in which information is given well-defined meaning, in order to be accessible and comprehensible not only by humans but also by computers thus enabling computers and people cooperation ? This approach relies on ontologies, semantic annotations and formal knowledge representation languages. The huge amount of formalisms proposed shows not only the increasing interest of such approach but also the problems faced when sharing annotations and ontologies. We argue that translation methods seems necessary to share and re-use the heterogeneous resources belonging for example to a scientific community or an enterprise, documents (in electronic or paper supports) constitute a significant source of knowledge to be represented, handled, queried and diffused

Full textOur research deals with audiovisual document modeling as well as knowledge associated with it along its production process. The advent of digital and User-Generated content has induced a greater reuse of document fragments, often in a totally different perspective from their original creation context. An ontology of those fragments could provide through a controlled indexing an autonomous management of their production and reuse, even in mixed production (amateur-professionnal). Ta this end, we have developed a conceptual model which makes it possible to track the evolution of each audiovisual document fragment along its production chain. A core ontology has been created in order to represent the progress of a production project, as well as describe the audiovisual fragment in the way of a shooting script (composition, framing) which also refers to filmed elements such as persons, objects, locations. A semantic script representation enables thus the order of a shooting (specification) from a third party (amateur, professional), but also the description of existing fragments or materials, giving the opportunity to assess the conformity of a shot with its original specification. Our ontology also incorporates a documentation (term, definition, illustration) which allows us to adapt the knowledge expression (a shot specification for instance) depending on a context of access (task, user) and thus eases knowledge exchange between the contributors on the production chain. We have experimented the use of our ontology in software applications, as part of the european project MediaMap, and covering all the production chain (scripting, production, post-indexing, search)

Full textDigital libraries's development is asking for including in these systems new services, able to complement those that can be considered "basic" digital libraries services. This thesis makes proposais that allow to improve the exploitation of semantic relationships between documents in digital libraries. Queries that express user's interest in relationships themselves are eased. Moreover, these relationships are exploited in order to allow the dynamic composition of new documents (for ex. , historical versions). The proposals made cover three aspects: normalising documents, modelling relationships and their exploiting, and, finally, the architectural propositions that allow to integrate new relationship-oriented functionalities in digital libraries. The convenience of the proposed solutions is shown on a prototype consisting in a legislative digital library

Full textControlled language makes indexing multilingual documents possible by limiting the inconsistencies of vocabulary and by harmonizing the selected descriptors, especially within a multilingual framework. According to a professional field survey it appears that in spite of this indexing assistance tool, the problems generated by the search for equivalence from language to language are not truly solved. An analysis of handbooks of thesaurus construction and standards showed real difficulties encountered by the documentalists during the process of indexing. The solutions adopted or recommended by these standards seem to be inspired by solutions of another discipline rather closed to documentation : terminology studies. Terminology field shows that the interlingua variations come from linguistic differences in the knowledge field. The semiotic aspect of the indexing process makes interesting to question the cognitive sphere to identify brief replies in these multi - representations of a domain in several languages and to limit the variations in multilingual indexing process. The cognitive process in multilingual indexing does not seem to be studied or approached under the angle of interlingua equivalence. However, many works approached the cognitive aspect in monolingual indexing. This experiment was based on a method entitled "think aloud protocol". The purpose of this is to "exteriorize" the cognitive process related to the task of work. We have made a protocol of experimentation for a librarian's activity in a multilingual context. This indexing task is explained by a cognitive process schema which helps to understand different indexer strategies and give useful information to build knowledge tools

Full textIn a globalized context, companies must be innovative to increase their productivity and continue to exist in an increasingly competitive market. Innovations, potential sources of profit for a company, can be at the level of a process, a new product or a service, etc. An innovative company is a company which capitalizes on its knowledge. Knowledge management (KM) is a set of approaches that can address a range of issues related to knowledge including capitalization of knowledge. However, despite the benefits and the positive impact which can have such practices on an organization, these are very little implemented. In the thesis defended in this manuscript, we are interested in improving the capitalization of knowledge and in particular the structuring of information in order to propose candidate knowledge. Our goal is to make the access to knowledge more effective to business. To do this, we must reduce the number of irrelevant results and identify the knowledge that can help business in their daily problems.By this approach, we can help an organization to optimize its feedbacks and the time spent in the different processes put in place. In order to meet these challenges, we are interested in setting up a set of elementary components, each of these components having a specific role. These components are organized as an interactive cycle. Each component will interact with others, the underlying idea is that a component improves its results by learning results from other components. Users interact directly with these components in a transparent way. To search for knowledge, the cycle scrutinizes and analyzes the behavior of users to better understand their expectations. Thus, the cycle is able to learn and improve to better capture and seek knowledge of the company. The first component is named «identification and representation of knowledge», this component has the role of exploiting a set of documents in order to extract the knowledge within this corpus. The second component aims to organize this set of documents using the knowledge extracted by the first component. The last component builds on the results provided by the previous components, the role of this component is to allow the users to be able to do a semantic search by exploiting the knowledge model built by the first component and document organization which the second component offers. This last component will aim to share knowledge, this component is not restricted to only a search, it also includes a mechanism of suggestions that assists the users in their search by offering similar documents, etc.The global approach is tested and validated with a set of documents from Reuters newspaper articles. The results of the automatic analysis are compared to the tags produced by human readers

Full textThis thesis' goal is the improvement of the security of remotely accessed systems with the use of cryptographic tools. Specifically it is applied to digital documents management software that raise issues in three fields~: communication, authentication and rights management. Unlike common approaches that involve the use of individual protections for these three fields, we offer a set of tools made to work together to improve the system's security. Securing communication is done thanks to a new secure communication protocol designed for distributed applications. Authentication issues led to the development of two tailored solutions providing cryptographic support to the application for any authentication method. Rights management is handled through new associations between a given access right and specific cryptographic applications. A key element of those solutions is the emphasis put on the usability of these secure tools. It swayed the development of our proposals toward more transparent solutions that would not disturb the user experience. As a result, we obtained a secure system made of these tools and mechanisms that work together to provide full and transparent security for a digital documents management software. This security is fully based on cryptographic algorithms to provide provable and verifiable security properties. As a supporting layer for these mechanisms, a secure software library was designed to provide all the required tools for cryptographic uses in a portable way

Full textIn a highly competitive economic environment, the company that wants to remain competitive must continually rethink its organization, mobilize its skills and revise its strategy. This requires greater cooperation among stakeholders, increased communication and an accumulation of knowledge and action processes. This development also implies the establishment of a mechanism for information retrieval in a heterogeneous corporate memory distributed via the Web or an Intranet. The constitution of this heritage is generally based on various sources of information and requires taking into account the level of expertise of different actors. In this context, the EDM (Electronic Document) is an essential technology component of the corporate knowledge and collective intelligence. Our approach is therefore to model and design a system to search for information that can make this memory accessible regardless of actors who have created and so relevant to the context of a given interest

Full textWith the recent development of new information and communication technologies, the paper documents are transformed to digital documents. Furthermore, it considers that the document is no longer seen as a whole, or as a monolithic bloc, but as organized entities. Exploiting these documents amount to identify and locate these entities. These entities are connected by relationships to give a "form" to document. Several types of relationships may occur, so that several "forms" of a document emerge. These different materializations of the same document are related to different uses of the same document and are essential for optimal management and shared of holdings. The work presented in this thesis aims to address the challenges of representing different materializations of a document through its representation of entities and their relationships. If those materializations are translated through structures, the issues are related to the representation of multistructured documents. Our work focuses mainly on the modeling, integration and exploitation of multistructured documents: (1) Proposal of multistructured document model. This model incorporates two levels of description: a specific level to describe each document through entities that compose and a generic level to identify document kinds through the grouping of similar structures. (2) Proposal of techniques for extracting structure (implicit or explicit) of a document (the specific level) and classification of this structure with respect to common structures (the generic level). The classification algorithm proposed includes a calculation of distance called "structural" (comparison of trees and graphs). This classification is associated with a process of verification of the "cohesion" of classes and possible reorganization of disrupted classes. (3) Proposal of document exploitation technical from their structures and their contents: (a) a document search that can reproduce documentary granules through criteria based on research of structures and / or content, (b) a multidimensional analysis that is to analyze and visualize the documentary information across multiple dimensions (of structures and / or content). In order to validate our proposals, we have developed a tool for integration and analysis of multistructured documents, called MDOCREP (Multistructured Document Repository). This tool provides on the one hand, the extraction and classification of document structures, and on the other hand, the querying and the multidimensional analysis of documents from their different structures

Full textHuman perceptive vision combines several levels of perception in order to simplify the interpretation of a scene. It is represented by physiologists as a perceptive cycle guided by visual attention. We propose to use this principle for the recognition of images of old and handwritten documents. Thus, we propose a generic architecture, DMOS-P, that makes it possible to specify mechanisms of perceptive cooperation that makes easier the description and improve the recognition of the structure of documents. In the applications, we show a prediction/verification mechanism: the low resolution vision provides hypotheses on the structure, using the global context; these hypotheses are then verified at a higher resolution. We validated this approach on various kinds of documents (handwritten incoming mails, archive registers, newspapers…) and at a large scale (more than 80,000 images)
