Full textJoaquín Camaño was a Jesuit Province of Paraguay, who lived in 'exile Italian most of his life from 1767 to 1820. His work and his reputation may be considered minor when compared to many other Jesuits exiled by order of Charles III in the late eighteenth century in Emilia-Romagna. Through my research I deepen the role of J. Camaño which minor character who enters the lives of others expelled by a dynamic relational network of which he was one of the principal architects. My goal was to study the impact that the exiles were American Jesuits, through the life of Joaquin Camaño, the Italian intellectual world, Europe and America after the expulsion of 1767. He, with his studies, is part of the renewed and vibrant rhetoric of the " New World" in those years is of great dynamism. Born in the small town of La Rioja, Argentina, stands as a brilliant cartographer, ethnographer and linguist in the context of the European Enlightenment thanks to its life as a missionary. After the expulsion, Joaquín Camaño, along with many other fellow Americans, will arrive in Faenza, in the Papal States, devoting himself to the study of cartography, ethnography and American languages. His research interests lie at a nerve center for the history of linguistic thought -anthropological, when direct observation and theoretical reflection phenomena were measured with the wide variety now found in the human world.

Full textIn spite of the Tridentine and post-Tridentine cloistered legislation, the 16th and 17th centuries witnessed the foundation in Italy, Europe and the mission countries of numerous semi-religious female congregations, without clausura and without solemn vows, founded, co-founded or directed by the fathers of the Society of Jesus. These congregations, called “Jesuitesses”, were inspired by the Jesuit Constitutions and Ignatian spirituality, especially in the educational apostolate. Through an in-depth archival research, the present study offers a vast census of the numerous houses of Jesuitesses present in Italy between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries, showing, through the analysis of the network of relations between these institutes as well as the economic, juridical, educational and spiritual peculiarities of the semi-religious compared to the cloistered nuns, the substantial compactness and unity of this phenomenon, based on a common Jesuit identity. The aim is also to shed light on the contrasts and contradictions related to the affirmation of the Jesuitesses, which led to bitter internal clashes within the Society of Jesus, various inquisitorial trials and harsh jurisdictional conflicts between secular and ecclesiastical powers.

Full textAccording to a common narrative in the history of philosophy, the modern age of philosophical thought is born in the precise moment of death of Aristotelianism: it is only through, and because of, the abandonment of many basic tenets of Aristotle’s thought that a modern conception of science and knowledge would arise. For many centuries, Scholasticism and Aristotelianism were thought to be the same, so the crisis of the latter implied almost automatically the end of the former. This PhD thesis aims to contest this common view: focusing on the scholastic thought of the modern age, the author shows how Scholasticism differed from Aristotelianism and so could survive its collapse. In particular, this study is centered on the scholastic conception of causality and teleology: the shift in the paradigm of causation is usually deemed as one of the distinguishing features of modern philosophy, one allowing us to discern a clear demarcation line between Scholasticism and modernity. This change results in the rejection of the use of teleological reasoning in natural philosophy, and the consequent mechanistic reduction of causality to efficient causes. This study challenges this view, arguing that both the general conception of causality and the use of teleological arguments in physics were matter a debate within the scholastic tradition, and that the reduction of causation to efficiency was already implicit in modern Scholasticism. The modern conception of causation must then be understood as deriving from its scholastic heritage, and not as a direct contraposition to scholastic theories

Full textThis work aims to study the first literary production of Monaldo Leopardi (1176-1847), Giacomo Leopardi’s father, according to a cultural and historical point of view. Initially, we rebuilt the relationship between Monaldo Leopardi and his family with the Society of Jesus (XVI-XVIII Century), pointing out the model of «Christian hero» he embodied during his jesuitical homeschooling. Then, we analysed Monaldo Leopardi’s literary production (1800-1806) considering three different aspects: first of all, the connection with the Italian Accademie that we investigated thanks to archives resources, with a special focus on the Accademia dei Disuguali Placidi Ravvivati (1801-1803) he founded; afterwards, we studied his poetic and theatrical works referring to the volume "Opere del conte Monaldo Leopardi Gonfallonieri da Recanati" (1803). Finally, we decided to examine the development of this literary production with main Christian traits, by comparing father’s and son’s literature and by focussing on the journal “La Voce della Ragione” (1832-1835) and the letters between Monaldo and the jesuitical general Jan Philip Roothaan.

Full textThis dissertation makes a study of the contacts between a few Chinese literati and Jesuits as well as the influence that Chinese literati’s social network exerted through their contacts with Jesuits in the late Ming Dynasty. About the Chinese literati’s social network, three important types of interpersonal relationships have been paid special attention to, which are: tongnian (同年, graduates of the imperial examination in the same year), shisheng (师生, master and disciple) and tongxiang (同乡, fellow townsmen). All these three types of interpersonal relationships were generated from, or at least somewhat related to the imperial examinations (keju, 科举), the basic link from which most of the Chinese intellectuals’ social relationships came from. As for the specific research figures, the dissertation deals with five Metropolitan Graduates in the two consecutive sessions of the year 1589 and 1592, i.e. Li Rihua (李日华, 1565-1635), Xie Zhaozhe (谢肇淛, 1567-1624), Feng Yingjing (冯应京, 1555-1606), Cao Yubian (曹于汴, 1558-1634) and Jiao Hong (焦竑, 1540-1619) since they represented four different types of attitudes towards Jesuits and western religion and culture, in the meantime, in their social network which played an important role in affecting their attitudes towards western learnings, all of the three types of interpersonal relationships tongnian, shisheng and tongxiang count a lot. Although the interpersonal relationships of the above five Metropolitan Graduates seemed to be independent of each other, in fact, they could be connected into a larger social network, which contains several other tongnian who belonged to the same sessions of 1589 and 1592 as well as some other literati who had frequent and close contacts with the Metropolitan Graduates of these two sessions. All the figures, directly or indirectly, had connections with each other mainly through the interpersonal relationships of tongnian, shisheng and tongxiang, thus forming an organic whole. This kind of officialdom interpersonal network in late Ming Dynasty represented by the group of Metropolitan Graduates in 1589 and 1592 brought both opportunities and challenges to the spread of Catholicism and other western learnings in China: those scholar-officials who held positive attitudes would influence the others in their interpersonal network and vice versa. Therefore, studying the contacts between Chinese scholar-officials and Jesuits especially under the framework of the former’s interpersonal network will definitely help understand better the cultural communication between China and the West during late Ming and early Qing dynasties, hence further provide reference significance for today's cultural exchanges between the two sides.

Full textBy adopting a long-term period chronological perspective, this research analyses the institutional frameworks’ development of Milanese literary academies between their appearance in the city area and the beginning of Austrian government’s jurisdiction after the Peace of Utrecht. Key objectives of the phenomenon’s historical reconstruction are: the identification of patrons who promoted the academies’ dissemination; the description of associational networks made up by different intellectual elite groups operating in Milan; the contextualization of cultural projects - and resulting under covered political tensions - that influenced the academical pattern’s expansion process; finally, the gradual constitution of a peculiar Ambrosian identity related with this associations’ typology. The exegesis of the “Badia della Val di Blenio” academy’s literary production, deduced by the historical examine of the “Facchino” Cosme de Aldana’s bio-bibliographical experience, introduces the enquiry on students’ academical foundations, which were the result of the cooperation between the archiepiscopal curia, religious orders involved in the educational programs and representative bodies of Milanese patricians. Archival discoveries on Inquieti’s meetings contribute in depicting the progressive composition of a coherent Ambrosian “system of virtues” (the baroque reference point for academical activities), that got into a substantial crisis at the end of seventeenth century.
