Full textWireless sensor networks (WSN) have a wide range of applications in various fields and consist of a large number of low-cost, low-power distributed sensors. Energy efficiency of sensors is the most critical issue in the system design of the network. The aim of this thesis is to study the application of recent MIMO techniques in the context of cooperative MIMO forWSN in order to reduce energy consumption. These techniques are based on the max−dmin and P-OSM precoders which require the knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) at transmitter. To make the use of the CSI realistic in WSN, we quantized these two precoders. The idea is to reduce the information sent on the feedback channel while still having a good performance of the precoders. We used some techniques from the literature and proposed others to perform this quantization. We then proposed various energy-efficient cooperative schemes that allow the implementation of max−dmin and P-OSM precoders with a quantized feedback channel. Performances of the proposed schemes in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay are evaluated and analyzed by comparing them with the space-time block codes (STBC) based cooperative scheme used in literature. Results show that our proposed systems provide more energy savings than the STBC one even in the presence of synchronization errors between the sensors. We are further interested in the application of sensor networks in high-voltage substations in the context of the Smart Grid. The objective is to evaluate the performance of proposed cooperative systems in the presence of impulsive noise and in a real environment of high-voltage substation in Quebec. By using measured data of impulsive noise obtained from the Ecole de Technologie Supérieure of Montreal, we determined a statistical model of the impulsive noise. In order to use the multi-antenna system, we propose an extension of this model

Full textNosocomial infections associated to catheters are a real public health problem. Candida yeasts ranks fourth among the most frequently isolated microorganisms, responsible for infections. These hospital-acquired infections are often linked to the presence of a biofilm that is difficult to eradicate. As a consequence, the development of prevention strategies that avoid biofilm formation by inhibiting microorganism adherence is an interesting approach. Conception of functionalized surfaces with active molecules is an expanding research area. After demonstrating that common catheter materials do not inhibit C. Albicans biofilm formation, different materials were coated with anidulafungin (ANF) or with thymol (THY) to study their anti-biofilm activity. This approach has been limited, as it depended on the nature of the material for ANF and was impossible to achieve for THY. The third part of the project consisted of developing functionalized gold surfaces with a cyclodextrin (RAMEB) that is able to immobilize ANF or THY through the formation of inclusion complexes. C. Albicans adherence on these new surfaces was inhibited by more than 60% for the two molecules. The mode of action of the loaded surfaces was anti-adhesive for ANF and fungicidal for THY. The last part of the research study consisted of functionalizing gold surfaces by covalent bonding. The grafting of a synthetic molecule: an Ester of Carvacrol (EsC) enabled an inhibition of at least 80% of the number of viable and culturable adherent yeast cells on these surfaces through a fungicidal mechanism. Functionalized gold surfaces with cyclodextrins or EsC produced some interesting preliminary results that should be transposed to common catheter materials

Lower motor neuron damage often results in flaccid paralysis in which the affected muscles are unable to be stimulated artificially via the supplying nerve. Such damage is common in patients who suffer from spinal cord injury and Multiple Sclerosis. Current practice for artificial recovery of muscle function involves stimulating the muscles directly by means of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), which requires 100-1000 times more current than that required for nerve stimulation, thus presenting the risk of pain receptor activation. A potential alternative exists in chemical stimulation by means of administration of the neurotransmitter, Acetylcholine (ACh). This study investigates the potential of this possibility by examining the response of two muscle types to extracellular administration of ACh.

Full textOn the basis of the Article 97 of the Charter of the United Nations, the Secretary-General is the highest officer of the United Nations. It behoves to him to run the administrative body of the Organization : the Secretariat of the United Nations. In order to do so, he holds the highest administrative power. That thesis aims to defining the notion of the administrative power applied to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, as well as to explaining the modalities of its concrete exercise. Then, that study includes the one on the hierarchical chains ruling the Secretariat, on mechanisms of the delegation of powers and on the reporting requirements, as well as the one on the set of control means, external from the Secretariat. The study mentions the latest reforms instituted at the Secretariat since those last ten years, the administrative philosophy that underlies them, as well as the role of the member States in the effective functioning of the Secretariat. The study does not miss to show the fundamental correlation between the political order and the administrative order of the Organization. That contribution to the study on administrative power of the Secretary-General facilitates the understanding of the real empowerment of the Secretary-General, in a strictly administrative matter as well as, more broadly, in the matter of carrying out the programs of the Organization. As a more general rule, that study contributes to the perception of the contemporary challenges and obstacles to which the international administrative institutions are submitted, in a constantly evolving world

Full textWe analyse according to a comparative method how farmers are involved in new agricultural practices and how they appropriate them. The population sample includes 160 farmers divided into two groups placed under different objective economical as well as social and psychological conditions, one having the advantage of the development of an irrigated area, the other located in a rainfed area. Farmers with different land tenure systems cohabitate in these two areas : landowners ("melkists") and collectivists working on state lands. According to our hypothesis, farmers organize their practices in accordance with the problem they plan to deal with and thus with their situation, the image they have of themselves, the values they adhere to and from wich they build up life projects and professional projects. Each of the farmers of our population sample appropriates the innovations in his own way by transforming the customs, the finalities and sometimes even the contents proposed by the extension agents. The analysis allows to distinguish two groups, those who become professional and those who become proletarian. Those who have the advantage of favourable conditions actively seek for in formations, they have more intense relations with the extension agent whom they consider as an expert, with him they make a rational and progressive appropriation of the innovations. Those who have difficulties, consider agriculture as a mode of life, they seek the information with the local group, they see the extension agent as a controller and they cautiously engage in innovations or refuse them. Practices are organized essentially according to future prospects. Unexpected result : engagement in innovation is more intense and diversified in rainfed areas

Full textMost studies on the modern history of Libya and its society tend to limit their scope to a schema that reduces the social and economic life of Libya to nomadic and tribal relations or to the practice of pastoral agriculture and transit trade; corsair activity exercised on the coastal cities is also a focus. Consequently, this vision of the country’s history is reduced to twointerpretations. While the first relates strictly to the internal history of the area, the second refers exclusively to the external factor; only rarely are both aspects analyzed together. Keeping this in mind, our dissertation takes into account both internal and external elements related to the history of the city of Tripoli and its hinterlands as well as the fact that it is partand parcel of Mediterranean and Ottoman history, aiming thereby to study all the aspects which compose the social and economic history of the Tripolitain via the merchant class of Iyālat Ṭarābulus al-Gharb. Local sources such as the registers from the Tripoli Ottoman-era sharî‘a court along with entries from the journal of the Tripoli businessman Ḥasan al-FaqīhḤasan in addition to European consular reports, in particular, those from the French consuls as well as the Livorno consular reports reveal a synergy of economic and social networks which show an entirely new aspect of Libyan history

Full textThe biogeochemical cycle of trace metals was greatly accelerated by human activities that have led to the contamination of water and river sediments. Following their emissions, the majority of trace metals exist in particulate form which can be transported by runoff and end up in rivers where they settle and where a portion can be dissolved into the water column in response to changes in the physico-chemical conditions of the site and under the action of indigenous microorganisms which later can interact with the food chain and pose a potential danger of toxicity to humans and other living organisms. In this study, we have chosen to work on Al-Ghadir River which represents an exceptional and an original case of pollution where the height of sediments, including several types of pollutants, is more than one meter. The aim of this work was to understand and to evaluate the role of the microbial compartment in the sediments of the Al-Ghadir River, which is the most polluting source to the Mediterranean, on the mobility of metals and their effects on underground water. This study was realized in two series of experiments (batch and soil column) with situations similar to those found in the river. A physico-chemical and chemical characterization of the studied sites was conducted as a first step to begin, after that, with the experimental approach which was used to isolate the physico-chemical processes from those which are attributable to microbiological activity. In the experiments conducted in closed reactors (batch), results obtained showed that the microbial activities are correlated with the strong dissolution of metals, especially for Fe, Mn, Pb, Cu and Zn. Iron appeared the most solubilized element and its solubilisation was correlated with the other trace metals suggesting that these metals are associated to iron oxides. This hypothesis was confirmed by sequential extraction procedure indicating the presence of iron-reducing bacteria, which, during the fermentation of glucose and the production of organic acids, reduced iron oxides. These later have led to the dissolution of trace metals and to a change in the bacterial populations which were detected after five days of incubation by the microbiological and the genetic studies. The effect of the bacteria on the mobilization of metals in sediments was then studied in hydrodynamic columns, under conditions similar to those in the field. Results obtained showed that: (i) Studied metals are not leached in the same order and showed the following order (in μg/l): Fe > Mn > Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb ≥ Cr; (ii) Metals will reprecipitate on the neoformed phases after the system returns to equilibrium. Studies of the distribution profile of metals in columns showed that metals were leached homogenously from the sediments during incubation. This distribution was shown to depend on the height of the sediment where the re-distribution was shown at its maximum at the surface of the column sediments (0-10 cm) and became null at a depth between 10 and 25 cm. This phenomenon is explained by the fact that the metals after being dissolved and passed into solution, were then readsorbed to the negative electrochemical, neoformed and colloidal sediment phases which explains the decrease in the concentration of metals in the leachate obtained in the laboratory and suggests that the mechanism of trapping of metals in the column limits the migration of these later to underground water, as the adsorption capacity of present colloïds is not reached and the system is at equilibrium

Full textThis dissertation applies a narratologic approach of the narrative structure in the novels of ghallab. Through this methodology, we want to make a break in the mainstream of litterary analysis concerning ghallab's novels in the arab world in general and morrocco in particular. And thus beyond textuality was the main object critics. Our analysis has four chapters : narration, time, space and characters. The chapter concerning narration aims at looking for the structural unity and the homogeneity of the last meaning of the novel, its clausule as its opening. Then, to verify some aspects the narrative structure and select those elements which are prominent in the novelistic technique. The second chapter deals with time. We studied the anachronies of two temporal sequences. Order and duration. We also studied this aspect in relation to duration between narration and story. The third chapter has two subdivisions which treat of description and space. In the first part, we studied the relation of description, its functions and finally its fulfillment in narration. In the second part, we studied space from a fonctional point of view and its relations with other types of space
