Abstract:
The article reveals the role of the ghazal genre in the development of poetic form and content in Uzbek poetry in the second half of the twentieth century. The poems of Uzbek poets Habibi, Sabir Abdulla, Chustiy, Charkhiy, Erkin Vahidov, Abdulla Aripov are the basis for the analysis. The main theme of the article is to cover the issues related to the prosody characteristics and content of the simple ghazal, ghazal-i qit’a, ghazali musajja’, ghazali muvashshahi ta’rikh and reversible ghazal metre in the works of these artists. It also discusses ghazal muvashshahi ta’rikh, which are not found in the history of Uzbek literature, and the possibilities of ghazal types with reversible prosody are analyzed.

Abstract:
The Ghazal is a well-known genre of Urdu poetry. The translation of Ghazal into the English language poses specific challenges. Translating Ghalib, one of the greatest ghazal writers, into English, is a special case under consideration. Several translators have produced their versions of Ghalib’s Urdu ghazals. The present study is an effort to evaluate the performance of six translators who rendered a particular ghazal of Ghalib in the English language. The study utilizes the distinction between ‘literal’ and ‘sense-for-sense’ translation as perceived by Nida (2000 [1964]), and Vermeer (2000). The translations have been analyzed on the basis of three research questions which encompass the aspects of the type of translation, the form of the Ghazal, and the poetic appeal. The study offers useful insights into the translation of Ghazal into the English language.

[This article analyzes the reading tendency presented in Hymns of Pranaya Veda, a collection of ghazals, authored by Prakat Pageni 'Shiva'. An analysis of the trends in ghazal based on the reader response theory is called reading tendency. Here, the work is analyzed based on the impersonal reading without any relation to the author's opinion. Examples of ghazals are presented representatively when analyzing the work. The ghazal collection itself is considered as the primary source material and the secondary sources include the texts related to ghazal theory, critical works, critical articles and research materials. In this article, the analysis is based on the basic tenets of ghazal and reader response theory. The analysis is based on the structural and thematic angles out of the structural, thematic, semantic and stylistic bases of the reader’s responses. Although there is abundant use of the components of ghazals like structured uses of the alphabets, sher, kafia, radif and takhallus, there does not seem uniformity in the use of sher and the alphabets. The use of takhallus also seems to have been used without following the basic tenets of the ghazal theory. Looking at the thematic aspect of ghazals, the subject matter of almost all ghazals is romantic or erotic (coincidentally) but the content of one ghazal seems to be less erotic but more Nepali cultural. Similarly, some ghazals in the collection are very vulgar both verbally and emotionally. However, from the point of view of subject matter, the ghazals have been presented in Musalsal.]

Alharthi, Jokha Mohammed. "I have never touched her : the body in Al-Ghazal Al-‘Udhri." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5689.

Full text
Abstract:
Al-ghazal al-‘udhri emerged as a remarkable literary genre in Arabic literature during the Umayyad period (7th-8th centuries CE). The leaders of this genre are famous poet-lovers who were known for their dramatic love stories and unique poetry, such as Majnun Layla, Qays Lubna and Jamil Buthaynah. There is a common presumption of the absence of the concept of the body in al-ghazal al-‘udhri; most scholars to date have only reproduced commonly- held ideas about the purity of ‘udhri love without doubting its supposed chastity. This thesis, however, argues that the body has a privileged position in al-ghazal al-‘udhri. It shows that the body’s presence is represented, realistically or allegorically, in various ways, both in anecdotes ascribed to ‘udhri poets as well as in their poetry. Although some critics have discussed the theme of the ‘depiction of the beloved’s body’, it is the contribution of this study to illuminate the ‘ethereal nature of beauty’ in this depiction. Moreover, this thesis provides a discussion about the symbolic body in ‘udhri poetry. It provides a departure from the prevailing views on the ‘udhri phenomenon in studies of classical Arabic literature. It opens the door to new discussions on the relationship between love poetry and Arab society in the classical age. It is also a contribution to literary studies of representations of the body.

Liboiron, Paul Adrien. "The transformation of plot in the couplet of the Urdu Ghazal : an examination of narrative." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30140.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines a selection of verses taken from the Urdu divan of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. Ghalib is considered by many to be the preeminent writer of the classical Urdu ghazal (circa 1750-1850). Although the examination is restricted to Ghalib's verse, the problem it investigates is broader in nature and involves questions which some aspects of the ghazal raise with respect to the reader's involvement. An essential feature of the ghazal form is the fact that, although the ghazal poem consists of a set of couplets, each couplet of a ghazal is itself a complete text with respect to its content The question, then, is "how does the reader become involved in a form limited to two lines of text?" This thesis discusses the question from a narratological perspective: the couplet involves the reader by telling a story. The narrative of the couplet differs from what one normally thinks of as narrative in that the significance of its plot is derived, not from a series of episodes arranged in chronological order, but from a thematic continuity which links couplet to couplet within the tradition as a whole. The world of the ghazal is inhabited by a few characters, the principal being the lover and the beloved, whose behaviour and attitudes are determined largely by a set of well-defined conventions. The characters who appear in the individual couplet are already familiar from the dramas to which these characters have been subjected in previous readings of other couplets. However, unlike the characters in a traditional novel whose histories connect a great variety of events within a chronological framework, the couplet is extremely limited in term of the number of chronological connections it can establish. The depiction of time in the ghazal is radically different from the often elaborate histories presented in forms such as the novel. The world of the ghazal is merely suggested. Consequently, the reader's role in reconstructing the world of the text is of particular importance in compact forms such as that of the ghazal. The contention of this thesis is that the restrictions imposed by the couplet on plot structure has been compensated for by the cultivation of a narrative style in the ghazal text which often forces the reader to become aware of the process of discovering the drama of the text. The first chapter begins with an introduction to the thesis, and is followed by an introduction to the formal features of the ghazal text and some of the important themes of the tradition. The second chapter presents a review of critical writings in English on the Urdu ghazal. The third chapter presents a discussion of methodology. In this chapter I use Peter Rabinowitz' analysis of the reader's beliefs in my attempt to define what I mean by the reader's involvement in the world of the text. According to Rabinowitz, a fictional work invites its reader to pretend that its plot is a historical account, even though the reader knows that the world of the text is imaginary. To account for the reader's dual role, Rabinowitz divides the reader's beliefs into what he calls the "authorial audience" and the narrative audience." Briefly, the authorial audience can be viewed as the competent reader, the one who possesses the required knowledge to understand the text, to decipher its allusions, but who knows the world of the text is a fiction. The narrative audience sees the fictional text as a description of events that "really" happened. My investigation of the reader's attempt to discover the world of the text is from the point of view of the narrative audience. The third chapter attempts to apply Rabinowitz' views to some general features of the plot structure in the ghazal text. The fourth and final chapter examines the ways in which the ghazal text forces the reader to become aware of the process of discovering the world of the text.
Arts, Faculty of
Asian Studies, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
The presence of clay objects is fairly common at Neolithic sites, including those sites in the Near East. In most cases the objects have a small size and occur in different shapes. These objects have a particular value to researchers. This thesis illustrates our research based on new data, which were provided by new excavations like those of Tell Halula, of Tell Aswad and Ain Ghazal. These new elements and their comparison with earlier data enabled us to followed the development of clay objects since their first appearance in the PPPA period and through the various stages of the Neolithic period: PPNA (9500-8700 BC), early PPNB (8700-8200 BC) and middle PPNB (8200-7500 BC). The geographical area considered for this research was limited to the Levant. The questions posed in this research are based first on the homogeneity/heterogeneity of the typology of these clay objects and their distribution at the sites in the region. Secondly, we also focused on production technique. After a detailed analysis of the whole corpus, the clay objects were grouped in several categories according to their type of representation: human figures, animal figures, “other objects” and small clay vessels. In the third part of the thesis we analysed and compared the development of the objects by period and by category

Abstract:
In this paper the Support Vector Machines (SVM) method is used to correlate the transitional forced and mixed convection experimental data of Ghajar and Tam (1994) that were obtained along a stainless steel horizontal circular tube fitted with re-entrant, square-edged, and bell-mouth inlets under uniform wall heat flux boundary condition. The SVM method has been chosen to further improve the accuracy of the correlations that were developed by Ghajar and his co-workers using the traditional least-squares method (Ghajar and Tam, 1994) and more recently the artificial neural networks (ANN) method (Ghajar et al., 2004). Using the ANN method improved the accuracy of their correlation. However, there are drawbacks associated with ANN method. One of the major problems with the ANN method is that it does not provide a unique correlation due to different coefficient matrices. The SVM method used in this study eliminated the drawbacks associated with the ANN method and provided a unique correlation with comparable accuracy as the ANN method. For the experimental data used, majority of the data points were predicted within 5% deviation. Comparisons were made regarding the accuracy of the developed correlation and its characteristic using SVM and ANN methods. The results showed that SVM is a good method to correlate complex heat transfer data.

Abstract The study sought to assess Investment in Ghana Upstream Sector, looking at the risk involved in the loss of Investment and the returns from the investment. The specific objectives were: to establish the level of investment in the oil and gas projects that are producing in commercial volumes in the Upstream sector of Ghana, to assess the revenues realized by Ghana and the IOCs from the sale of oil and gas since the start of commercial production in the year 2010. The researchers noticed that investors in the upstream sector face risk such as: price volatility risk, political risk, investment risk, and many other risks that affect the upstream operations. For the purposes of this study, risk is limited to investment risk. Thus, the researchers are looking at the level of investment in the upstream sector and whether the investment has any relation with the returns or revenues. A purposeful sampling technique was used to select the three commercial producing fields in Ghana for the Study. These are the Jubilee field, the TEN field, and the SGN field. Secondary data including oil and gas production volumes was taken from the annual reports of PIAC. Other secondary data was taken from Petroleum Commission, and Ministry of Finance. The results of the study showed that a total of about 8.8 billion US dollars was invested in the Jubilee field. About 4.998 billion US dollars and 5.2 billion US dollars was invested in TEN and SGN fields respectively. This means a total of about 19 billion US dollars was invested in the exploration and development of the three producing fields in Ghana. The results also indicated that despite all the risk in the upstream sector, about 22.69 billion US dollars revenues has been realized by the IOCs from the sale of oil and gas since the commencement of production in the year 2010. The results also showed that Ghana group realized about 4.98 billion US dollars from the revenues of oil and gas over the same period.

Abstract:
For horizontal circular pipes under uniform wall heat flux boundary condition and three different inlet configurations (re-entrant, square-edged, bell-mouth), Ghajar and Tam (1995) developed flow regime maps for the determination of the boundary between single-phase forced and mixed convection using experimental data of Ghajar and Tam (1994). Based on the ratio of the local peripheral heat transfer coefficient at the top and the bottom, the heat transfer data was classified as either forced or mixed convection among the different flow regimes. The forced-mixed convection boundary was then obtained by empirical correlations. From the flow maps, heat transfer correlations for different flow regimes were recommended. Recently Trafalis et al. (2005) used the Multiclass Support Vector Machines (SVM) method to classify vertical and horizontal two-phase flow regimes in 4 pipes with good accuracy. In this study, the SVM method was applied to the single-phase experimental data of Ghajar and Tam (1994) and new flow regime maps were developed. Five flow regimes (forced turbulent, forced transition, mixed transition, forced laminar, mixed laminar) were identified in the flow maps using Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers as the identifying parameters. The flow regimes on the boundaries of the new maps were represented by the SVM decision functions. The results show that the new flow regime maps for the three types of inlets can classify the forced and mixed convection experimental data in different flow regimes with good accuracy.

Abstract:
Urban areas are contributing unprecedentedly in modelling the social, cultural, economic, environmental and physical development of the globe as they are perceived as basket of opportunities to the poor. This phenomenon has undoubtedly resulted in the influx of poor migrants particularly in the global south and consequently causing the proliferation of slums. This is indirectly influencing the growth of megacities due to increasing population amidst limited infrastructure. So far, limited research has been conducted into the role of poor rural migrants in contributing to the growth of megacities. The study also attempted to propose sustainable planning strategies in guiding future urban planning. The case study used both primary and secondary data collection methods. In all, 304 questionnaires were administered in April 2017 (Nima=146 and Old Fadama=158). From the study, 46% of the respondents in Nima hail from the Northern part of Ghana and 14% from the Volta Region. On the other hand, 49% of the respondents in Old Fadama come from the Northern part of Ghana and 22% from the Volta Region. Both Nima and Old Fadama have high figures on migrant population which means a fair contribution to the growth of Accra as a megacity. Therefore, spatial equality through a comprehensive, integrated and universal national development(UND) covering all sectors should be employed. Also, economic opportunities upgrading which is essential for slum and rural communities in Ghana should be considered. Further research on how cities in Ghana are planning towards becoming megacities is prudent.

Abstract:
The International Health Regulations (2005) are legally binding on 196 States Parties, Including all WHO Member States. The IHR aims to keep the world informed about public health risks, through committing all signatories to cooperate together in combating any future “illness or medical condition, irrespective of origin or source, that presents or could present significant harm to humans.” Under IHR, countries agreed to strengthen their public health capacities and notify the WHO of any such illness in their populations. The WHO would be the centralized body for all countries facing a health threat, with the power to declare a “public health emergency of international concern,” issue recommendations, and work with countries to tackle a crisis. Although, with the sudden and rapid spread of COVID-19 in the world, many countries varied in implementing the WHO guidelines and health recommendations. While some countries followed the WHO guidelines, others imposed travel restrictions against the WHO’s recommendations. Some refused to share their data with the organization. Others banned the export of medical equipment, even in the face of global shortages. The UN Compliance Research group will focus during the current cycle on analyzing the compliance of the WHO member states to the organizations guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
EdTech Hub country scans explore factors that enable and hinder the use of technology in education. These factors include the policy or vision for EdTech, institutional capacity, private sector partnerships, and digital infrastructure. The scans are intended to be comprehensive but are by no means exhaustive; however, we hope they will serve as a useful starting point for more in-depth discussions about opportunities and barriers in EdTech in specific countries and, in this case, Ghana. This report is based primarily on desk research, with quality assurance provided by a country expert.
