Abstract:
Use of marginal coastal saline lands for rice cultivation is one of the options to sustain the net rice cropped area and rice production. On-farm farmer’s participatory field trial was conducted in Bangladesh during 2012 and 2013 in non-gher and gher of medium saline ecosystems. The objective of the study was to identify suitable Boro variety for medium saline soils. Salt tolerant rice varieties, BRRI dhan47 and Binadhan-8 were evaluated along with widely adopted BRRI dhan28 in non-gher area. BRRI dha47, Binadhan-8 and Binadhan-10 were tested in saline ghers. Crops were irrigated with water of 1.89 to 3.5 dS m-1 at different growth stages respectively. In saline non-gher, where soil salinity went up to 6.35 dS m-1, the highest grain yield was produced by Binadhan-8 (4.57 t ha-1) followed by BRRI dhan28 (4.23 t ha-1). The highest grain yield was recorded in Binadhan-10 (5.14 t ha-1) in ghers which was 6 and 12% higher than BRRI dhan47 and Binadhan-8 respectively at soil salinity of 7.43 dS m-1. Farmers preferred Binadhan-10 as a salt tolerant variety for its higher grain yield and medium grain quality.Bangladesh Rice j. 2014, 18(1&2): 18-23

Abstract:
Gher farming with shrimp and prawn (seafood) is blooming in the south-west region of Bangladesh, impacting positively on household level nutritional security, employment generation and foreign currency earning. Such positive impacts increased the importance of seafood production and trade to the international market from Bangladesh. Out of several food safety requirement of international market, seafood traceability is a key issue for Bangladeshi producers. To develop a traceability system about 200,000 gher farmers were registered by DoF with the support of UNIDO project and a paper based traceability system was developed since 2009. This study was designed to understand existing traceability system, trend of gher ownership changes and its impact on the traceability in term of its strength and weakness. Three gher farming clusters in three upazilas of Bagerhat district were selected to carry out this study to assess the facts above using focus group discussion, key informant interview, questionnaire survey, physical observation, and literature review. The micro-level observation on the gher and its ownership changes were critically analyzed taking the Google Earth images from the farming cluster in the selected upazilas. The study revealed that gher farming has huge positive impacts on total farm productivity, income, and farmers’ well-being however, land ownership changes impacting negatively on existing traceability of farms. It was found that out of 167 ghers in three clusters, a massive change of gher ownership happened over the last 10 years. Under this situation existing traceability system cannot sustain for a long time. Therefore, land administration system should be brought under digital system and e-traceability needs to be implemented by the collaborative initiative of the Department of Fisheries and the Ministry of Land.Progressive Agriculture 28 (2): 156-166, 2017

Abstract:
The present study was conducted to understand existing production system of shrimp and prawn (seafood) with gher1 farming in the south-western region of Bangladesh from January to March 2014. Three gher farming clusters in three Upazilas of Bagerhat district were selected to carry out this study to assess the fact above using focus group discussion, key informant interview, questionnaire survey, physical observation, and literature review. The study revealed that gher farming system has changed the cropping patterns dramatically. This diversified farming system produces prawn, carp fish, boro paddy, and vegetable in the field where only single crop of paddy was cultivated. Gher dikes were used to produce vegetables, fruits and the central part for rice cultivation. Whereas the whole water body (during monsoon) and canals (during dry season) were used to culture finfish and prawn. Farmers were mainly found to use commercial feed with a rare amount of homemade feed because of the availability of commercial feed. Most of their investment goes for buying feed, PL and were found to take loan with high interest from banks or depot owners. Decreased salinity due to siltation in Mongla river resulted in increased overall production. The evidence presented in the study confirms that gher farming system impacting positively in the south-west region of Bangladesh.J. Bangladesh Agril. Univ. 15(1): 123-132, January 2017

Abstract:
The water-bodies of shrimp/prawn farm are known as “gher” and the embankments of the gher are known as “Dyke”. Recently, vegetable production on the Dykes is gaining popularity in the southwest coastal region. The main purpose of the study was to identify the present status of Dyke Vegetable Production (DVP) in gher and to determine the problem confrontation associated with DVP. Data were collected from randomly selected 84 respondents (50% out of 168 gher owners) of five selected villages of Mollarhat upazila under Bagerhat district, through face-to-face interview using a pre-tested interview schedule during February to April, 2018. Collected data were analyzed by using SPSS software for different statistical techniques and for obtaining results and subsequent interpretation for satisfying the mentioned purpose of the study. Most (86.9%) of the respondents had medium to large sized Dykes, and thus the respondents could bring their Dyke area under vegetables cultivation instead of keeping fallow year after year. The gher owners harvested on an average 218.47 kg vegetable and earned 3,383.807 Tk. annually from one decimal Dyke area which is an additional income. The gher owners who have large sized Dyke in ghers continued production due to high quantity of cumulative profit. About half (51.19%) of the respondents grown lady’s finger in the Dykes during lean period followed by brinjal (48.81%) and tomato (47.61%). The respondents produced 53,962.09 kg ha-1 which is completely extra production contributing to food security. A number of 29 problems were identified as confronted by Dyke vegetables growers with different extent of severity. The most severe problem in Dyke vegetable farming in the study area was “lack of technical knowledge for identification of diseases”. Most of the respondents (96.4%) belonged to medium problem confrontation category. Among 13 selected characteristics of the respondents only annual family income showed a significant positive relationship and extension contact showed a negative significant relationship with the problem confrontation. The gher owners confront medium problems and appropriate measures should be undertaken to reduce these problems as minimum as possible. Res. Agric., Livest. Fish.6(1): 69-78, April 2019

Abstract:
These are the proceedings of the 5th International Probabilistic Workshop. Even though the 5th anniversary of a conference might not be of such importance, it is quite interesting to note the development of this probabilistic conference. Originally, the series started as the 1st and 2nd Dresdner Probabilistic Symposium, which were launched to present research and applications mainly dealt with at Dresden University of Technology. Since then, the conference has grown to an internationally recognised conference dealing with research on and applications of probabilistic techniques, mainly in the field of structural engineering. Other topics have also been dealt with such as ship safety and natural hazards. Whereas the first conferences in Dresden included about 12 presentations each, the conference in Ghent has attracted nearly 30 presentations. Moving from Dresden to Vienna (University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences) to Berlin (Federal Institute for Material Research and Testing) and then finally to Ghent, the conference has constantly evolved towards a truly international level. This can be seen by the language used. The first two conferences were entirely in the German language. During the conference in Berlin however, the change from the German to English language was especially apparent as some presentations were conducted in German and others in English. Now in Ghent all papers will be presented in English. Participants now, not only come from Europe, but also from other continents. Although the conference will move back to Germany again next year (2008) in Darmstadt, the international concept will remain, since so much work in the field of probabilistic safety evaluations is carried out internationally. In two years (2009) the conference will move to Delft, The Netherlands and probably in 2010 the conference will be held in Szczecin, Poland. Coming back to the present: the editors wish all participants a successful conference in Ghent.

Abstract:

Gernay, Marieke Josy Chantal. "Health in urban late medieval North-West Europe : a bioarchaeological study of Caen, Canterbury and Ghent." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11433/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over half of the global population currently lives in an urban environment and this is still increasing rapidly in developing countries. This thesis aims to provide a comparative picture of health in the rapidly developing urban centres in late medieval NW Europe - here defined as northern France, England and Belgium - through bioarchaeological analysis. This study focused on macroscopic methods and “stress indicators” (cribra orbitalia, dental enamel hypoplasia, adult stature and periosteal reaction on the tibiae) as a proxy for health and sanitation in these populations and respiratory disease (periosteal rib lesions and maxillary sinusitis) as a proxy for air quality. A 100 adult skeletons were analysed from the Darnétal cemetery of Caen (12th – 18th century AD), northern France, which had a reputation for poor sanitation. A further 100 adult skeletons were analysed from the cemetery of St. Gregory’s priory in Canterbury (12th – 16th century AD), whose economy is based around entertaining pilgrims and travellers. Lastly, The St. Pieter parish in Ghent (12th – 18th century AD) occupies a unique position on the edge of the town and 83 adult skeletons were analysed from this site. The skeletal evidence did not reflect the differences in sanitary conditions expected originally. Similar results were recorded for average adult stature estimates as well as the prevalence of cribra orbitalia, and dental enamel hypoplasia across the sites. It has been suggested that urban centres throughout the region may have been challenged to provide a healthy living environment. High prevalence rates of maxillary sinisusitis (Caen: 71%, Canterbury: 64%, and Ghent: 61%) and high prevalence rates of periosteal reaction on the ribs in Caen (63%) and Canterbury (63%) suggest significant levels of air pollution in these populations. The unusually high levels of rib lesions in Caen and Canterbury set the agenda for further research into their occurence and the development of recording standards. Lastly, the historical differences between the towns, and the location of the St Pieter parish, challenge the simplistic division of settlements into ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ types. It reveals the perspective for a more nuanced interpretation of urbanisation in NW Europe.

One of the importante skills of children in school age is the balance, important for maintaining bipedal posture as opposed to the constant action of gravity. The objectives of this study were to cross-cultural adapt, verify the reliability and concorrent validity the Development Test Balance Ghent (TDEG) for children between 22 months and 6 years. This study evaluated 47 children between 22 months and 6 years old of both sexes in Goiânia. The instruments used were: Ghent Developmental Balance Test (GDBT); Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS); Sitting-Rising Test (TSL); Denver II Developmental Screening Test; Pediatric Balance Scale (EEP). To check the inter-observers reliability, the assessment of children was videotaped and passed to four (4) observers. To check the intra-observer reliability, a new evalluation through the videos was performed six (6) months after the first score. In order to determine the intra-rater reliability, a second evaluation of the child was performed up to 30 days after the first evaluation. After the translation into Portuguese some terms were discussed and consensus was carried out, some of which related to the content and semantics were changed to become the test more understandable and appropriate. The results of intra-rater reliability analysis of the TDEG total score was excellent, provided ICC = 0.94 . The inter-observers reliability of the TDEG total score of and TSL can be considered excellent withICC = 0.98 and 0.85, respectively. The inter-observers agreement of the EEP total score was considered moderate, with ICC = 0.56. By correlating TDEG with the EEP considering the entire sample, it was found an r = 0.70 (p <0.001), indicating a strong and significant correlation between these instruments. Analysing the second instrument used for validation, a moderate correlation with r = 0.42 and significant (p = 0.005) between TDEG and TSL was found when considering the entire sample. From these results we conclude that the TDEG has concurrent validity and is reliable for use in the age group which it proposes to assess, especially in the total score. Furthermore, the TDEG is a good tool for scientific research and ambulatory care about balance disorders of children under five years old.

Abstract:
The THETIS research reactor on the site of the Nuclear Sciences Institute of the Ghent University has been in operation from 1967 until December 2003. This light-water moderated graphite-reflected low-enriched uranium pool-type reactor has been used for various purposes e.g. the production of radio-isotopes and activation analyses. During the first years its core power was 15 kW. In the early ’70, a core enlargement allowed for operation at typically 150 kW, while the maximum was allowed to be 250 kW. The fuel was 5% enriched uranium cladded with AISI304L stainless steel, with graphite plugs at both ends of the tubes. In order to decommission the reactor, the spent fuel and other nuclear materials present had to be removed from the reactor site. Ghent University entrusted SCK·CEN, the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre, with the study of the further management of the spent fuel. Various options such as reprocessing, intermediate storage awaiting final disposal were investigated. However the characteristics and the small amount of spent fuel (84.64 kg of UO2) made these solutions very expensive. In the meantime ONDRAF/NIRAS, the Belgian radioactive waste management agency, was developing together with Belgoprocess, a solution for final conditioning in 400 liter drums and further intermediate storage of the spent fuel in its nuclear facilities at the BELGOPROCESS site in Dessel. This conditioned waste is foreseen to enter the future geological disposal site after the intermediate storage period only after 2050. Finally SCK·CEN recommended this solution for the back-end of the THETIS spent fuel and Ghent University declared this spent fuel as radioactive waste. Once the feasibility for conditioning and storage was demonstrated, further actions were taken in order to unload the spent fuel out of the reactor and to transport it to the PAMELA-installation at the Belgoprocess site in Dessel. Finally after receiving all necessary licensing authorisations from the FANC/AFCN, the Belgian nuclear safety authority, the operations started at the reactor site beginning of 2010 and the spent fuel was placed into the intermediate storage building after conditioning at the Belgoprocess site at the end of 2010. The paper will focus on: - the inventarisation and characterization of the spent fuel and other nuclear materials; - the operations at Ghent University and Belgoprocess sites; - the conclusions drawn from the operations.
