Abstract:
These are the proceedings of the 5th International Probabilistic Workshop. Even though the 5th anniversary of a conference might not be of such importance, it is quite interesting to note the development of this probabilistic conference. Originally, the series started as the 1st and 2nd Dresdner Probabilistic Symposium, which were launched to present research and applications mainly dealt with at Dresden University of Technology. Since then, the conference has grown to an internationally recognised conference dealing with research on and applications of probabilistic techniques, mainly in the field of structural engineering. Other topics have also been dealt with such as ship safety and natural hazards. Whereas the first conferences in Dresden included about 12 presentations each, the conference in Ghent has attracted nearly 30 presentations. Moving from Dresden to Vienna (University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences) to Berlin (Federal Institute for Material Research and Testing) and then finally to Ghent, the conference has constantly evolved towards a truly international level. This can be seen by the language used. The first two conferences were entirely in the German language. During the conference in Berlin however, the change from the German to English language was especially apparent as some presentations were conducted in German and others in English. Now in Ghent all papers will be presented in English. Participants now, not only come from Europe, but also from other continents. Although the conference will move back to Germany again next year (2008) in Darmstadt, the international concept will remain, since so much work in the field of probabilistic safety evaluations is carried out internationally. In two years (2009) the conference will move to Delft, The Netherlands and probably in 2010 the conference will be held in Szczecin, Poland. Coming back to the present: the editors wish all participants a successful conference in Ghent.

Peronace, Anna.

Abstract:

Gernay, Marieke Josy Chantal. "Health in urban late medieval North-West Europe : a bioarchaeological study of Caen, Canterbury and Ghent." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11433/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over half of the global population currently lives in an urban environment and this is still increasing rapidly in developing countries. This thesis aims to provide a comparative picture of health in the rapidly developing urban centres in late medieval NW Europe - here defined as northern France, England and Belgium - through bioarchaeological analysis. This study focused on macroscopic methods and “stress indicators” (cribra orbitalia, dental enamel hypoplasia, adult stature and periosteal reaction on the tibiae) as a proxy for health and sanitation in these populations and respiratory disease (periosteal rib lesions and maxillary sinusitis) as a proxy for air quality. A 100 adult skeletons were analysed from the Darnétal cemetery of Caen (12th – 18th century AD), northern France, which had a reputation for poor sanitation. A further 100 adult skeletons were analysed from the cemetery of St. Gregory’s priory in Canterbury (12th – 16th century AD), whose economy is based around entertaining pilgrims and travellers. Lastly, The St. Pieter parish in Ghent (12th – 18th century AD) occupies a unique position on the edge of the town and 83 adult skeletons were analysed from this site. The skeletal evidence did not reflect the differences in sanitary conditions expected originally. Similar results were recorded for average adult stature estimates as well as the prevalence of cribra orbitalia, and dental enamel hypoplasia across the sites. It has been suggested that urban centres throughout the region may have been challenged to provide a healthy living environment. High prevalence rates of maxillary sinisusitis (Caen: 71%, Canterbury: 64%, and Ghent: 61%) and high prevalence rates of periosteal reaction on the ribs in Caen (63%) and Canterbury (63%) suggest significant levels of air pollution in these populations. The unusually high levels of rib lesions in Caen and Canterbury set the agenda for further research into their occurence and the development of recording standards. Lastly, the historical differences between the towns, and the location of the St Pieter parish, challenge the simplistic division of settlements into ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ types. It reveals the perspective for a more nuanced interpretation of urbanisation in NW Europe.

One of the importante skills of children in school age is the balance, important for maintaining bipedal posture as opposed to the constant action of gravity. The objectives of this study were to cross-cultural adapt, verify the reliability and concorrent validity the Development Test Balance Ghent (TDEG) for children between 22 months and 6 years. This study evaluated 47 children between 22 months and 6 years old of both sexes in Goiânia. The instruments used were: Ghent Developmental Balance Test (GDBT); Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS); Sitting-Rising Test (TSL); Denver II Developmental Screening Test; Pediatric Balance Scale (EEP). To check the inter-observers reliability, the assessment of children was videotaped and passed to four (4) observers. To check the intra-observer reliability, a new evalluation through the videos was performed six (6) months after the first score. In order to determine the intra-rater reliability, a second evaluation of the child was performed up to 30 days after the first evaluation. After the translation into Portuguese some terms were discussed and consensus was carried out, some of which related to the content and semantics were changed to become the test more understandable and appropriate. The results of intra-rater reliability analysis of the TDEG total score was excellent, provided ICC = 0.94 . The inter-observers reliability of the TDEG total score of and TSL can be considered excellent withICC = 0.98 and 0.85, respectively. The inter-observers agreement of the EEP total score was considered moderate, with ICC = 0.56. By correlating TDEG with the EEP considering the entire sample, it was found an r = 0.70 (p <0.001), indicating a strong and significant correlation between these instruments. Analysing the second instrument used for validation, a moderate correlation with r = 0.42 and significant (p = 0.005) between TDEG and TSL was found when considering the entire sample. From these results we conclude that the TDEG has concurrent validity and is reliable for use in the age group which it proposes to assess, especially in the total score. Furthermore, the TDEG is a good tool for scientific research and ambulatory care about balance disorders of children under five years old.

Abstract:
In order to reduce the environmental load and the shortage in fresh water supply, recent studies have focused in establishing rules for a green and sustainable development or redesign of cities. As far as water issues are concerned, the role of infrastructure is commonly recognized as one of the main driver in determining the environmental results. Compared to other infrastructures, modern Water Distribution Systems suffer from a more important structural delay that is nowadays producing criticalities and issues in their everyday functioning. WDNs represent the most complex and main infrastructure for the transportation of clean drinking water from reservoirs and storage tanks to industrial and residential consumers. In order to satisfy consumers demand, WDNs must be constructed with a good layout that connects all points of water demand and should provide the best possible hydraulic conditions and operational requirements, minimizing network costs. This is known as the WDN design problem. In an attempt to resolve the optimization of real WDN problem, Information and Communication Technologies and Optimization Algorithms have been exploited. In this context, the aim of this master thesis is to propose the application of new methodologies to the optimal design of WDNs that include the employment of a Graph-theory, a modularity based approach and the concept of High-level flow, employed in order to simplify the WDN complexity before the optimization process. GHEST algorithm is exploited in order to deal the optimal design problem. The methodologies were applied to DTown and ModenaS networks, both already known in literature.

Abstract:
Henry of Ghent can be considered as one of the most important masters at the University of Paris in the last quarter of the 13th century. In his voluminous work composed mainly by his Summa of Ordinary Questions and 15 sets of Quodlibetal Questions , Henry often discusses human knowledge. Specially, he gives ample room in his texts [1] to the caracterization of man as a being capable of acquiring knowledge and [2] to the discussion about the way in which man acts (through his cognitive potencies) to produce such knowledge once affected by the objects of knowledge. This simple knowledge, acquired through abstraction from the senses, will be the basis for the posterior propositional knowledge. Nevertheless, a fundamental difficulty is clear in Henrys philosophy: both [1] human potency for knowledge and [2] human activity toward knowledge are insufficient for the production of strictly true knowledge. Thus, although Henrys doctrine of knowledge accepts the occurrence of intellectual knowledge through abstraction from the senses, it also points to the necessity of some divine action beyond abstraction and the human soul itself which allows for strictly true knowledge. The present study concentrates on the description of Henry of Ghents conception of abstractive knowledge pointing at the end to the problematic necessity highlighted by our author of surpassing this knowledge acquired through senses.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with Dietrich of Freiberg’s doctrine of categories, ontology and theory of knowledge, as present in the treatise De origine rerum praedicamentalium. The primary aim is to examine the constitutive function the intellect exercises on the categories and being as being. The first part of this thesis replaces the treatise in the historical background of the late 13th century debates from the University of Paris regarding the nature of categories and the manner of organizing the real genera of being. It compares Dietrich’s deduction of the categories with the systematization of some of his predecessors such as Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas and Henry of Ghent. The second part of the thesis deals with the objects caused by the intellect: the One as principle of number and division, relation and time. The last part investigates the manner in which the intellect exercises its constitutive power on being and demonstrates in the final analysis that the subject of metaphysics, the quiditative being of things, is placed at the intersection of logic and reality

Abstract:
This thesis emphasizes the senses of the audience in reception of Jan van Eyck’s heroic Ghent Altarpiece. This pivotal work may have demanded the viewer engage in a hierarchy of devotion ranging from intimate and private to public and liturgical. Jan van Eyck engages in a strategy of representation that focus and specify various aspects of vision to create a multivalent devotional experiences for the viewer. This thesis compares some of the visual uses of frames in miniatures and how they relate to altarpiece formats and hierarchies of vision. Reception of the Ghent Altarpiece is also discussed in relation to Augustine of Hippo’s theory of tri-partite vision as well as his theory of cross-modal uses of the sense in dialogues of spiritual truth. Sound is also a vital component of the devotional experience of the Ghent Altarpiece. Issues of music and speech acts are discussed to underscore the multivalent devotional uses of the Ghent Altarpiece.
