Ton, Denis. "Giambattista Crosato."

Full textThis work is the result of the research developed about the conception of the certum in Giambattista Vico. Our interest was to found, in the various philosophical writings of G. Vico (1668-1744), a new way of understanding the original conception of the thinker about knowledge and how he worked and seized this vision of the world, unlike the traditional view which gave a logical value to the way of knowing before the true and false. Vico conceived the knowledge both as certum and verum, highlighting the original role of certum. This new way of perceiving the order of certum gives to the Vico´s knowing its own logic: the logic of credible. The credibility is treated like the element which leads us to the certainty before the exclusion of all mathematical accuracy given to knowledge in providing the possibility of reaching it in its uncertain scope and / or its uncertain boundaries.

Full textThis work investigates the Eighteenth Century Italian philosopher Giambattista Vicos conception of History. It is based on a reading of Vicos main work Scienza Nuova (1744), supported by a reading of three other books from the author: Autobiografia, Il Metodo Degli Studi Del Tempo Nostro and Dell Antichissima Sapienza Italica. Our aim is to discover and also describe what Vico called Ideal Eternal History, a renewed conception of Human History.

Full textThe work analyzes the metaphysics of Giambattista Vico with the aim of delineating its characteristics and describing its developments during the entire course of the Neapolitan philosopher's speculation (1699-1744). For this purpose it was decided to deepen the relationship of Vico's doctrines with his sources - in particular Plato and Malebranche - and of the seventeenth-eighteenth-century debate in which they were originally inserted. The fundamental idea that we intend to propose is that the entire development of Vico's metaphysical speculation can be interpreted as a continuous rethinking of an initial - and never questioned - ontologist inspiration.

Full textThis study aims to offer a rational interpretation of Vico's work, to show that the concept of reason occupies a central position in Vico's writings and that its most patent expression is community. By placing reason and its two modalities, community and politics, at the core of this study, I am led to offer a general interpretation of the Scienza nuova through what Vico calls his " two practices ", namely " the art of criticism " and " the art of diagnosis ". Such an interpretation enables me to discuss the notions of prudence, ingenium, philology, " ideal eternal history " and education. I show how these concepts are organized around a scientific project whose object is " the common nature of nations "

After situating Vico in the Naples of his time and in relation to the questions of modern rationality, as well as carrying out an exercise of philosophical reflection seeking the understanding of the worldview of Vico, this piece of work aims at making explicit the ethic that underlies his work as an ethic of teleological character which privileges the practical life, evidencing a concern for what man can and should do of himself, notwithstanding the guardianship of a divine providence in a cyclical history. However, within the advent of the "age of men," it is verified a process of unfoldment of the human nature in which the development of the individual starts to dictate the development of the community; at the same time, the predominance of abstract rationality dissociated from other human faculties – such as imagination – leads to a preponderant literality in the interpretation of mythology, which pervades the doctrines of religions, moving man away from piety, with the consequent loss of both social cohesion and the human sense of the world. Hence, man decays in the age of the gods, submitting himself to heteronomy in the face of the eternal ideal history. It is identified with the present thesis, therefore, the "master key" indicated by the Napolitan himself with the imagination that underlies poetic wisdom, the application of this interpretative key of the method of his work – the new critical art – is extended to the solution of the pretended paradox between the autonomy and the aimed happiness by a teleological ethic and the cyclical repetition of the eternal ideal history

SUMMARYGiambattista Vico (1668-1744) is the inaugurator of the Philosophy of History at a time when there was not yet a specific denomination to designate this type of study, a philosophy based on the common nature of nations, within a plan Providentialist, centered in a cyclical scheme: divine, heroic and human stage. He developed his thinking between the end of the seventeenth century and the mid-eighteenth century. Our research aims to make a separation on what implies in Giambattista Vico his constant reference to "Divine Providence" and its relation to the free will of man.Considered as one of the most important figures in European intellectual history, his New Science is appreciated as one of the fundamental works of this history.Vico claims the protagonist of man within history; each individual being is important insofar as there is a common good for all, thereby admitting the conscience of man that there is a providential end, and that his actions reach a higher and positive end established by the same Providence, called by some authors with the expression "heterogenesis of the ends".This paper is divided into four chapters. In a first term we will talk about the historical context that surrounds the author. The second chapter is directed to the "Storia ideale eterna" as the domain of Providence. The third chapter tries to delimit the notion of "Providence" and finally analyzes how Providence acts as a sense of human history. The fourth chapter aims to analyze the current situation of the Neapolitan philosopher in the contemporary context.Vico's contributions are multiple: he opens the study to the civil world made by men ; gives birth to history as science; recognizes that history does not cling to the truth of facts, but does reveal the system of beliefs, values and ideas proper to an era through the study of the set of events of that period. It is recognized as a precursor of anthropology and ethnology. The research is closed with some final reflections on the object of study.

Analyzing the works of René Descartes (1596-1650) and the conception of rhetoric as a meta language, provided both by Roland Barthes and by Haroldo de Campos, we investigated tension between Giambattista Vico (1668-1744) and the French philosopher. Misunderstanding forged from indirect reading of Neapolitan rector of the works of Descartes. This work analyzes the difference between the certification of knowledge in Descartes and Vico, a difference that, according elucidated, may be located in the tension between the concepts of truth and verisimilitude, respectively, as well as the concepts of way and sense. In 1699, Giambattista Vico took over the chair of Rhetoric at the Royal University of Naples. From this year by the year 1707, the philosopher gave opening speeches of school years at this institution. These talks come in under the heading of Orazioni Inaugurali (1699-1707), from which were analyzed in the present work the first two, pertaining to the years 1699 and 1700. This analysis sought to nuance not only the interweaving between form and content as, also, from there, suggest that the verisumilitude viquiana focuses formally in his writings, as well as the Cartesian truth would be derived from certain textual structure.

Full textThe research contributes to the definition of the integrated theory of human dignity, corresponding to the requirements of the scientific debate on the subject, in particular on the need to construct a model capable of connecting the theory of endowment with the theory of performance. Recognizing that the elaboration of this integrated theory requires a comparison between the theories of endowment and of performance with the theories of justice, of institutions and of education, a philosophical, historical and cultural-historical recognition of this comparison takes place, with regard to the most recent debate. The element that pedagogically emerges, which is transversal and important for the attainment of the objectives, is affection, a characteristic underlying each theory, yet still undersized, as extrinsically articulated and/or juxtaposed, or not even related to other components of the theories analyzed. Once the question is put into context both from an epistemological and a historical-cultural point of view, the focus is on the comparative analysis of Vico’s and Rosmini's thought, including the Vico’s interpretation of the latter. In the light of this analysis, a review of the history of the reception of the thought of both authors on the subject is carried out, focusing on the different interpretative schools, paying specific attention to pedagogy, to verify if and which theoretical-practical elements are obtained to contribute to the elaboration of integrated theory. Particular care is devoted to the comparison between the four historical-theoretical-cultural trends of the interpretative areas of Vico’s thought – to the accentuations of which the interpretation of the conatus is transversal – and the phases of the "Rosminian question", focusing on the affective turning point of his metaphysics after the twentieth-century end of metaphysics. The main topics of convergence identified between Vico and Rosmini on the subject of dignity are: a) the conception of language and the epistemology of the imagination, a fundamental anthropological structure that concerns the conatus/affection; the survey was also carried out through the comparative application of corpora analysis (in Italian and in English), in a methodological cross between the linguistic and historical sciences; b) the role of the anthropological-religious in the theory of civilization (also compared with that of recognition); c) the centrality of law and history for the dynamics of society inspired by the need for social justice as pursued by the institutions, in particular the educational (and political) ones. The complementarity of the approaches merges with the integrated theory of human dignity as a capacity to organize the theories of justice, institutions and education in the affective turn. This is evident in the different points of view, specifically in the analysis of convergence topics: 1) Vico's social theodicy is based on the history made by men, in the providential interaction of the ideal eternal, profane and sacred history; that of Rosmini is based on the person as a subsistent right, which relates to itself, to the neighbour and to the transcendence/Providence in and through the three societies: domestic, civil and ecclesial; 2) the "juridical pedagogy" in Vico is rooted in the rhetorical dimension of the New Science and in the aesthetic one of law (both as demythologization of the mythological and as an image of the generation of the Word in the facere of the natural law of the peoples); that of Rosmini in the synthesism of the three forms of the being, such that the orders of reflection of human rights are in the image of those of conscience, which is a speculative judgment of a practical judgment at least of the second order of reflection.

Full textThe main objective of this work is to analyze the variations of the meaning of the sublime by Vico and determine how the sublime, as the trigger moment of « andar raccogliendo », participates in the foundation of political community. It’s from the lightning-experience, of the sublime moment that begins the long process of development of the « bestioni » mind who wandered in the great post diluvian forests. By a vigorous imagination, they created the « universals fantastics » or « poetic characters, » which will be their first mode of apprehension of the world. So they are ready to leave their raw state to gradually reach humanity? Thus, at this the concept of «fantastics universals » that Vico founded his new science. In this way, he rehabilitates the imagination, fantasia, and gives it an important role of searching the truth, by proposing a reflection that takes into account all the properties of the human mindset. As a fervent defender of this discipline placed outside the field of knowledge by certain philosophers including Descartes, Vico studied the transformation of the human spirit through different moments of its evolution. So he invented entirely based on « aesthetic sublime ». His approach reminds us Kant, who, in his first criticism, defines basic rules of knowledge starting from the sensitive. The possibility of thinking on sublime as the Neapolitan philosopher not being limited to the poetic age, it should be determined during the passage from the poetic age to the age of « fully developed reason ». Considered as the moment where all symbolic references are suspended, the sublime has the particularity of modifying the order of things to bring out new symbolics institutions. This is what we observe in the new science, during the raising of the plebians against the patriarchy. It is this sublime moment that will favor the emergence of democracy in the cities, which Marc Richir called « sublime in politic». There is a connection between them, as they both reflected the problem of the socio-political foundation

Full textThis dissertation aims to examine the role of imagination in the work New Science of the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico (1668-1744). The focus of the research is to present the imagination as a concept of unity of knowledge and function of knowledge. For this purpose the dissertation begins with the image title page analysis present in the Scienza Nuova of 1744. This analysis will explore the design, trends and influences that led to the drafting of the image on the title page. An explanation of key concepts relevant follows for interpretation of the viquian opus, decoded from the hieroglyphs present on the title page. After showing the inventiveness of Vico to apply his imagination theory in his own work to achieve the reader, the research seeks to deepen the imagination of the theme as sensorial knowledge of the first people, the poetic wisdom, universal fantastic, the operation of the poetic mind and its requirements as a viquian topical and common sense. This intent aims to understand the contemporary attitude of Vico in his time, his conflicts against divergent school of thought and his concern for the future of humanity

Full textFrench liberals at the beginning of the restoration were faced with the doubly complex task of establishing both a foundation and an interpretation for the civil code. Cousin derives the basis from a divine law of kantian inspiration which, resounding within the heart of every man, implies that an individual's freedom is limited by his respect for that of his fellow man. A society defined in this manner is of an ideal nature. Indeed, a basis is established for the code as a set of laws, but this philosophical foundation alone does not constitute grounds for jurisprudence, which must essentially rely upon reality. The roots for this reality, or social setting, cannot be taken from tradition, for this would signify a return to the former system. Nor can they be derived from folks ways and practices. Instead the model for jurisprudence is taken from the roman jurisconsults, and the code is now seen as a modern resuscitation of roman law. Hence, at the very moment when reality would appear to diverge from the ideal, jourdan asserts that the two actually converge, at the expence of substituting ancient rome for the reality of france. It is at this point that vico is invoked in order to ensure the convergence between reality and the ideal, between history and philosophy, between the facts and the law. This appeal to the theories of vico can be considered valid only if the principle itself by which the neopolitan affirms the presence of the ideal in reality remains unquestioned. This "heroic principle", which stipulates that man creates the civil world, gives way to a necessarily democratic entity at some point in time where each individual takes part in the drawing-up of laws. After close examination of this moment, both ballanche and michelet are compelled to question the principle of representation upon which the liberal concept is based, to redefine the relationship between the civil sphere and the political sphere and, finally, to attribute to the plebians in the one case, and to the people in the other, a role as a driving force in history
