Abstract:
The mathematical model of the Giffen effect proposed in the article clearly demonstrates both the effect itself and the reasons for its manifestation. The main advantages of the model include its extreme simplicity, which opens up access to the widest circle of readers, the use of standard methods for solving the consumer choice problem, and the most important fundamental agreement with the results of the field experiment of Jensen and Miller. The model shows that any good for which there is a more expensive substitute can be of little value. This or that good is endowed with the appropriate property by a particular consumer due to his or her own preferences, income level and prevailing prices. Any good of little value, including those that can only be consumed by a high-income individual, may turn out to be Giffen’s goods. Therefore, the consumption of Giffen’s product cannot be considered as evidence of the low standard of living of the consumer. According to the model, an increase in demand for an increasingly expensive low-value good, which is the essence of the Giffen paradox, is the result of optimizing a set of goods, i.e. the result of rational consumer behavior. It is shown that for the manifestation of the Giffen effect, it is necessary that the amount of funds allocated by the consumer for the purchase of a low-value good and its more expensive substitute falls into a certain rather narrow range of values. The failures of numerous and long-term studies aimed at detecting empirical manifestations of Giffen behavior in various historical events are explained by the fact that the corresponding analysis was carried out on the basis of averaged rather than individual values of demand for all categories of consumers. As a result, the negative slope of the aggregate demand curve turned out to be dominant over the positive sections of certain individual demand curves.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the construction and analysis of the simplest mathematical model illustrating the Giffen’s effect and the reasons and conditions for its manifestation. We analyse erroneous, but widely spread, ideas about Giffen’s goods as a good, the demand for which grows due to its relative cheapening against the rising prices for all consumed goods. Under the model it is shown that any good can be both valuable and of little value, at least if it has a more expensive substitute. This property is not an intrinsic and inalienable property of one or another good. The certain property is given to any good by a specific consumer due to its personal preferences and under the influence of existing prices. Inferior good, including such, the consumption of which is available only to an individual with a high level of income, may turn out to be a product of Giffen. Therefore, the consumption of Giffen goods cannot be considered as evidence of a low standard of living for the consumer. Because of the solution of the standard task on the consumer choice, it is shown that the increase in demand for an inferior good when its price is growing, which is the essence of the Giffen paradox, is the result of optim. It is shown that for the manifestation of the Giffen effect it is necessary that the amount of funds allocated by the consumer for acquiring low value good and its more expensive substitute gets into a certain rather narrow range of values.

Abstract:
Whether Giffen goods exist or not has long been a argument in economics academic circle. This paper analyzes and evaluates the two opposing arguing points represented by Zhang Wuchang and Wang Dingding. At the same time, through analyzing in depth the explanation offered by Hicks Decomposition to Giffen goods in economics textbook, the paper points out that Hicks Decomposition to Giffen goods is against the axiom of Diminishing Marginal Utility, so that Giffen good is not likely to exist in reality.

Abstract:
The article addresses the Giffen paradox as a significant aspect of the consumer choice theory, which receives considerable attention in microeconomics at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels of studies. The authors are expanding on a textbook interpretation of the Giffen paradox by analyzing the results of empirical studies conducted by R. Jensen and N. Miller early in the XXI century, as well as describing the “Giffen behavior” through characteristic preference approach and incorporating the subsistence constraint in the neoclassical theory of consumer choice. Drawing on the idea of maintaining a minimum level of consumption by relatively poor individuals, the article proves the unity of a textbook approach to explaining the “Giffen behavior” and its modern versions presented in scientific literature. The article can be useful to teachers and students of microeconomics, as well as to all those willing to get modern understanding of the Giffen paradox.

Abstract:
This paper raises an approach to the study of consumer behaviour and markets with a particular emphasis on agricultural commodities. It develops an analysis of demand for certain products during a recent economic recession in Spain by showing the behaviour of some of them as Giffen goods in some years. According to the theory of Giffen demand, there is a direct (positive) relationship between price and the quantity demanded. Thus, the income effect outweighs the substitution effect. The main contributions of this work can be summarized in the next three points: 1) This paper studies the consumer behaviour from a Giffen perspective, beyond a traditional and rational utility approach; 2) It also suggests a framework to analyse several socioeconomic proposals and theories related to the sustainability and Human Rights-based ethic level (intrinsic to Giffen behaviour); 3) Finally, this theory is a significant contribution to design better economic policies. The analysis of Giffen phenomenon has greater explanatory power than the classical theory of Marshall. It also helps to reveal a number of important effects that are usually ignored and that could contribute to clarify some current economic phenomena.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the differences on gifted student&rsquo<br>s attitudes toward science and their preferred classroom climate during science classes based on gender and grade level. Two questionnaires, the Test of Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA) and the Individualized Classroom Environment Questionnaire (ICEQ), were used as survey tools in this study. A group of 163 gifted and talented students among four academic levels which are eighth grade, English prep class, ninth and eleventh grade were assigned to take part in this study. The data obtained from administration of measuring instrument were analyzed by using Two-Analyses of Variance (ANOVA). Result indicated that grade level of students had a significant effect on attitudes towards science. The study found, first, lower-grade students show more positive attitudes toward science than the students at higher-grade level. Secondly, there are significant differences were found among students in their perceptions of the science classroom environment based on their gender and grade level. Female students expected more personalization than male students, higher grade students preferred to have more independence and more differentiated classroom environment than lower grade students while they are learning.

Abstract:
Simulated learned helpless behavior was examined among gifted, gifted underachievers, and unselected children. Using the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility (IAR) Scale (Crandall, Katkovsky, & Crandall, 1965), after the children read a brief story and cast themselves in a failing role, the three groups of children were compared before and after the intervention (a week or two after the initial testing) on their positive and negative IAR scores. Learned helplessness theory would predict that helpless children would have high negative scores (attributing failure to themselves) and low positive scores (attributing success to external factors). Negative IAR scores did not differ or change across trials. Positive IAR scores for both gifted groups declined considerably over trials. The unselected group's positive IAR scores differed from those of both groups of gifted children in that they declined but not as drastically at posttest. All three groups' positive scores decreased to varying degrees across trials, indicating that nobody took personal responsibility for success after imagining themselves as a failure. In this respect, one aspect of learned helpless behavior was elicited. The results suggest that gifted children are capable of showing behavior which might indicate learned helplessness.

Palmer, Karen Smith. "A Comparison of Criteria used in Gifted Identification in the Commonwealth of Virginia." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29637.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Commonwealth of Virginia, gifted education plans are submitted to the state every five years for state approval. The plans must indicate the use of a minimum of four criteria out of the eight criteria provided by the Commonwealth in the identification process. The concept of using multiple criteria stems from research. Research has shown that the criteria used in the identification of gifted students affect the number of identified students as well as the proportions of the underrepresented (Donovan & Cross, 2002). Research has also shown that the use of multiple criteria leads to a higher proportion of underrepresented students identified (Callahan, Hunsaker, Adams, Moore, and Bland, 1995). The purpose of this study was to compare the gifted identification criteria used within the Commonwealth of Virginiaâ s public school divisions and analyze the effects of the criteria on the percentages of underrepresented gifted within the divisions. In this study, the researcher analyzed the numbers of each minority in the total populations against the total gifted minority populations to identify those divisions that were proportional for traditionally underrepresented minorities. All aspects of the gifted identification process for each division were then analyzed. The aspects were then used to compare the proportional divisions to the non-proportional divisions for commonalities in the identification process. Findings revealed that there were no divisions with reported minorities that were proportional in all traditionally underrepresented ethnicities. In addition, no one specific standardized measure was successfully used in identifying non-traditionally gifted minorities in all ethnic groups. The implication that can be drawn from this research is that despite all attempts to put research into practice by using multiple criteria in the identification of the gifted, there is no one criterion that ensures the proportional identification of underrepresented minorities.<br>Ph. Abstract:

Abstract:
In order to model the performance of a gas-turbine engine in the sub-idle region, particularly for starting and windmilling, it is necessary to use compressor characteristics which describe their operation and low speeds. As most compressor tests are conducted only in the range of operating speeds normally encountered, the resultant characteristics must be extrapolated in order to define the low speed compressor maps. In this paper, a variety of techniques for the extrapolation of axial-flow compressor characteristics are presented and evaluated. These include those presented by De-You &amp; Zhong-Fan [4], Agrawal &amp; Yunis [1] and Converse &amp; Giffen [3]. The ease and reliability of the extrapolation methods are compared. Problems associated with the prediction of losses within the turbomachinery are highlighted, particularly in respect of compressor operation at high flows and low rotational speeds. This is due to the creation of highly off-design values of incidence which are not encountered during above-idle running, but which may be found during windmilling.

The URL links to a website page in the Drexel Digital Museum (DDM) fashion image archive containing a 3D interactive panorama of an evening suit by American fashion designer James Galanos with related text. This evening suit is from Galanos Fall 1984 collection. The skirt and bodice of the jacket are black and white plaid wool. The jacket sleeves are black mink with leather inserts that contrast the sheen of the leather against the luster of the mink and reduce some of the bulk of the sleeve. The suit is part of The James G. Galanos Archive at Drexel University gifted to Drexel University in 2016. The panorama is an HTML5 formatted version of an ultra-high resolution ObjectVR created from stitched tiles captured with GigaPan technology. It is representative the ongoing research of the DDM, an international, interdisciplinary group of researchers focused on production, conservation and dissemination of new media for exhibition of historic fashion.

Abstract:
The URL links to a website page in the Drexel Digital Museum (DDM) fashion image archive containing a 3D interactive panorama of an evening suit by American fashion designer James Galanos with related text. This afternoon dress is from Galanos' Fall 1976 collection. It is made from pale pink silk chiffon and finished with hand stitching on the hems and edges of this dress, The dress was gifted to Drexel University as part of The James G. Galanos Archive at Drexel University in 2016. After it was imaged the gown was deemed too fragile to exhibit. By imaging it using high resolution GigaPan technology we are able to create an archival quality digital record of the dress and exhibit it virtually at life size in 3D panorama.
