Abstract:
Given the coterie of philosophers focused on everyday aesthetics, it's fascinating that gift reception has heretofore managed to escape their scrutiny. To enact a gift, recipients begin by imagining its use. On this level, gifts serve as a litmus test. In luring us, we're taken out of our normal ways of being to experience a different side of ourselves. Enacting a gift is thus a kind of performance, whose value depends on the donee’s interpretation, just as exhibitions, concerts, staged plays or books are performances of visual art, scores, scripts or texts, whose interpretations demonstrate their aesthetic value. To develop the relationship between enacting gifts and performing artworks, I begin by surveying junctures along the gift-event’s arc: reply, imagination, trust, recognition, transformation and memory. Transformations arising from agonistic gifts strike me as significant because they characterise the way gifts challenge our beliefs, eventually altering our values. That we grow to love gifts, which we originally rejected out of hand, casts doubt on self-knowledge. Enacted gifts handily challenge self-knowledge’s twin features: authority and transparency. As this paper indicates, gift reception helps both to understand ourselves better and to remove the obstacles to what Quassim Cassim calls Substantive Self-Knowledge.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article reconsiders the gift within London's sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century livery companies. Previous research into guild gift-giving cultures has focused exclusively upon substantial bequests of money and property by mercantile elites to the ‘great twelve’ livery companies. Through charitable gifts, citizens established godly reputations and legacies, perpetuated through the guild institution. It is argued here that a rich culture of material gift-giving, hitherto overlooked by historians, also thrived within London's craft guilds. Drawing on company gift books, inventories, and material survivals from guild collections, this article examines typologies of donors and gifts, the anticipated ‘returns’ on the gift by the recipient company, and the ideal spatial and temporal contexts for gift-giving. This material approach reveals that master artisans negotiated civic status, authority, and memory through the presentation of a wide range of gifted artefacts for display and ritual use in London's livery halls. Moreover, this culture of gift-giving was so deep-rooted and significant that it survived the Reformation upheavals largely intact. Finally, the embellishment of rituals of gifting, and the synchronization of gifting and feasting rites from the second half of the sixteenth century, are further evidence for the resurgence of English civic culture in this era.

Abstract:
Alfred W. Bennett (1833-1902), better known to posterity as a botanist, was active as a publisher in London in the eighteen-sixties. Almost uniquely amongst his contemporaries, Bennett specialized in books illustrated with mounted photographic prints for the middle-class market. Every year, new ‘photographic gift books’ would be released to coincide with the Christmas season of giving. Subject matter was mainly topographical or literary. Text and images were associated creatively; design, typography and photographic printing were of the highest quality. While Bennett’s career in photographically illustrated books was brief, starting in 1861 and ending in 1868, he made a distinctive contribution to the creation and development of the genre in Britain. The article evaluates Bennett’s career and impact, covering the following topics: the Quaker context that influenced Bennett’s activity as a publisher and photograph dealer; Bennett’s invention of the photographic gift book as a genre; synergy with Lovell Reeve, another pioneering photographic book publisher; the crucial importance of literary tourism for Bennett’s output; assimilation of the concept of the Picturesque within photographic illustration; the extension of subject matter to Continental Europe; and the decline of the photographically illustrated book business in the hands of Bennett’s successor Abraham Provost.

The author reviews John Barclay’s book Paul and the Gift, considering it one of the most important theological books in recent years. He asks whether the so-called “perfected” gift always manifests an extreme and proposes that it can sometimes also visualize an optimal mean between the opposites. The author further compares Barclay’s concept of “incongruity” with the medieval view of meritum de congruo, arguing that that the latter can also represent such generosity which is typical of God’s gift.

Abstract:
Purpose – Through an empirical analysis of a consumption community, the purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the theories of gift-giving, sharing and commodity exchange should not be kept separated but integrated into a unifying model. Design/methodology/approach – The paper provides new evidence about Bookcrossing.com, whose members share and give books as gifts; that is, physical goods rather than digital ones as in most of the communities considered in the literature. This community is analysed with qualitative tools, such as netnography, personal interviews and participant observation. Findings – The main result of the analysis of Bookcrossing is that gift-giving is not the only process responsible for value creation and distribution in consumption communities: sharing and commodity exchange also play a role. Furthermore, the paper provides new evidence about aspects of gift-giving and sharing that have received limited attention in the literature: collective reciprocity and anonymous sharing. Research limitations/implications – The limitations are related to the intrinsic properties of the methods employed (netnography, personal interviews and participant observation) and to the paper, which analyses only one community and one product category. The implications refer to the role of gift-giving in consumption communities and its relationships with other processes: consumer gift systems are not only gifting platforms, but they and the elements of sharing and commodity exchange need to be integrated. Practical implications – The empirical evidence and implications matter for the organisation and management of collaborative consumption platforms and the way in which traditional business models could and should interact with these platforms in an increasing number of businesses. Originality/value – The paper adds new evidence of and original insights into gift-giving and collective forms of exchange. Moreover, it provides managerial implications of the analysed community for the book publishing industry.

Abstract:
To the present-day reader texts are widely available. However, to the early modern reader this access was limited. While book ownership increased in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was not universal – even libraries were both limited in their collections and exclusive to the communities they served. Libraries were to be found all over Early Modern England, from city libraries to town subscription libraries. One could gain access to books but these collections were often rather limited in the variety and number of books they offered. Undoubtedly many libraries purchased books for their collections, but frequently books were also given to them by benefactors. One fine example of a community library which reflects its readers and members is the library of St Peter’s Cathedral, York Minster. York Minister library owes its existence to traceable benefactors and donations. One could study the collection to give an insight into reading practices and interests of the Early Modern Period. But in doing so we fall foul of becoming static and failing to develop the historiography of Book History. Instead, we can re-evaluate this collection by drawing from the old focus of genres but shifting this focus and approach the collection from a different path: a material path. These books resonate value. Not solely due to their genres and subject matter, but their value is also generated in how the books became accessible, through generosity and donation. As donations from benefactors these books should not be considered solely as works of literature, but as gifts from one agent to another. Gifts given with both intention and purpose.

Abstract:
Long Walk in Flight School is a document intended to complement a body of artwork that includes photographs, giclee prints, animation, and a twenty two page book of images. The main focus of the text is to discuss two types of exchange; my energy with tools in exchange for an object or event, which is then exchanged in the imagination of the audience for something else, a hybrid thing. These exchanges are part of the performance or presentation of the work. Beginning with a brief description of intent at the start of graduate school, it traces my development as an artist over a two year period, highlighting shifts in my thinking and activity during that time. Finally, it describes my thesis artwork as a set of potential narratives that are conceptually related but visually diverse.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study considers the history and problematics of the contemporary comic strip, particularly in regard to issues of controversy and iconoclasm. Special attention is paid to the local magazine, Bitterkomix as an example. In Chapter One, the comic medium is identified and discussed as a homogeneous art form. Its independence from both fine arts and literature is explained and the identifying, intrinsic characteristics of the medium are used as a basis for the analysis of form and meaning in selected contemporary comics. Chapter Two provides a brief history of iconoclasm, subversion and controversy surrounding selected comics from the 1950's up to the present. The emphasis is placed on pivotal developments in the medium, particularly in the United States. A link is suggested between the post-war affluence of the American society and the conservative values which underpin it. Because of the many similarities which exist between the value systems of white South Africa and those of the more conservative states of the U.S., a contextual parallel is mooted which identifies the development and impact of controversial comics abroad and the reception which Bitterkomix encountered in South Africa. Chapter Three outlines and analyses this connection, emphasising that Bitterkomix has to be seen in the wider historical context and not simply as an expression of a parochial, "alternative"culture among young Afrikaners. In the final two chapters, satire and the use of stereotypes in the comic form is considered. The study pays particular attention to the publications, Gif, Afrikaner Sekskomix and Loslyf(an Afrikaans skin magazine) in order to establish connections between deviant sexual behaviour in a repressive society.

In the modern society, gift-giving has become a common form of interpersonal interaction. As people increasingly rely on materialistic and formal gifts, the meanings behind the gifts are usually overlooked. This highlights the alienation problem in modern people’s interpersonal relations. In my experiences of giving or receiving a travel gift, my friends and I all enjoyed the process of handing over the gift and sharing travel experiences and stories behind the gift. “Travel gift” is perhaps only a medium. Through the gift, we express the intangible affection and blessings for each other. Every gift tells a story. No matter in communication of ideas or sharing of experiences, the underlying interpersonal bonding is worthy of thoughts. The goal of travel may vary from person to person, but enjoying local humanities, experiencing different lifestyles, and respecting diverse historical cultures are what make a trip more meaningful and valuable. Therefore, I attempt to create a picture book with a theme of “travel” to present local features of various places and discuss issues about respect for culture. Using “gift-giving” as the plot, I will also discuss the turning and changes in modern people’s mind as they seek for material satisfaction. Through literature review, this study first explores studies of picture book creation with a travel theme, instances and forms of game-based picture books, and then analyzes the humanity, history, and geographic characteristics of countries mentioned in these books. Based on the results, a picture book about the travel experiences of two personified characters residing on the opposite sides of the earth will be created. This book depicts the cultures in different countries through their visions and embeds the “search” element of games to increase the fun of interaction between readers and the book. This book is expected to be completed in three years. It will be a 8.5cm x 23.5cm two-way flip book, consisting of 48 double-sided printed pages (including the cover, back cover, colophon, blank page, book title, and copyright page). All the illustrations will be hand-drawn and arranged in a way that readers see the stories of one character when flipping the book from left to right and the stories of the other when flipping it from right to left. Starting from the first/last page of this book, the two characters share the local features of 11 countries they have visited from their viewpoints. When their respective stories proceed to the spread page in the center of the book, they will encounter and exchange travel gifts and great memories with each other.

Abstract:
The information, containing the entire world experience of mankind and serving as historical memory of the nation and the basis for further economic and spiritual progress of society, is stored in libraries. The preservation for future generations of this invaluable information and its carriers – the books that make up the library funds, has become a global task that all civilized countries of the world are solving. In order to preserve the Jewish cultural documentary heritage in the Library named after I. Manger, the department “Rare Book” has been functioning since 2000. Its fund has more than 1500 copies of documents. The collection in Hebrew includes mainly religious books published in the XIX and early XX centuries. The rarest of them are 2 Torah scrolls, volumes of the Babylonian Talmud, published in 1848–1880 in Lemberg, the edition of the Torah (Pentateuch of Moses), dated 1874; Books of the Prophets 1904 and 1914 editions, Zohar 1910, Haggadah. The collection of these rare and valuable books was formed partly through acquisitions in Bukinist bookshops, but the main part was received as a gift from residents of Chisinau and Moldova. Libraries are firstly designed to perform a dual function: to store documents published and written in the past and to provide access to them for present and future generations.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the perception of Japan in the middle of the 19th century through the eyes of the Russian writer Ivan Goncharov. As secretary of Yevfimiy Putyatin’s mission (who concluded the first Russian-Japanese treaty in 1855), he kept travel notes, which later turned into a famous essay about a trip to Japan. The study is based on a rare edition of “Russians in Japan”, published in 1855, a few years before the appearance of the famous book “Frigate Pallada”. Goncharov’s notes marked the beginning of a new stage of awareness about Japan in the Russian Empire. His impressions added new colors to the portrayal of the country of Rising Sun, which Russians already knew from notes about the captivity of Vasily Golovnin (1816) and the three-volume work of the famous German Japanologist Philipp Franz von Siebold (1854). The valuable edition of Goncharov’s notes from the Library of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University (with an inscription from the author to Putyatin) differs from the text in the “Frigate Pallada” that was subjected to severe revision. Unlike this later version, this one, in many ways, resembles the unredacted travel notes made by Gonncharov during the Putyatin’s mission. Also, Iosif Goshkevich, who mastered the Japanese language during his stay in the country, accompanied Yevfimiy Putyatin as an interpreter. “Russian-Japanese Dictionary” (in fact, it is a Japanese-Russian dictionary) was published by him in collaboration with Tachibana Kosai in 1857. Two copies of this dictionary are available in the faculty’s Library (with autographs). One was a gift from Nicholas of Japan, and another - from the faculty teacher Kurono Yoshibumi. The authors aim to familiarize the general public with these rarities of the Library, which date back to the time of the conclusion of the first treaty between Russia and Japan and are directly related to the beginning of Russia’s in-depth acquaintance with Japan.

Abstract:
Authors: Ion Razvan Radulescu, Zoran Stjepanovic, Petra Dufkova, Luis Almeida, Dorin Dan Abstract: E-learning instruments in the textile field are of great relevance: textile technologies are in a continuously modernization process and their knowledge aims to promote the development of the companies. The specialists in textiles, the high school students and the young entrepreneurs are able to implement the updated knowledge by being involved in a Vocational Education and Training (VET) process. Hence, key research providers in textiles have joined with the purpose of providing modern knowledge for the world of work. These objectives have been met within the Erasmus Plus - Advan2Tex project "E-learning course for the specialists in the textile field" (2014-2016). The e-learning course envisaged is based on an e-learning platform containing 7 modules in the field of innovative textiles: "Advanced Knitting Technologies", "Virtual prototyping of garments, 3D scanning, clothing for people with special needs", "New method for testing textile materials", "Standardization of textile testing" and "New sustainable textile technologies, LCA, Eco-labelling", "Entrepreneurship" and "Innovation management". Five European research providers have joined within the project's partnership and have elaborated the 7 modules in all the national languages as well as in English. The represented countries are: Czech Republic (TZU), Portugal (University Minho), Romania (INCDTP and UT Iasi) and Slovenia (University Maribor). These 7 modules in 5 languages have been uploaded as book resources on a Moodle e-learning platform. The content was divided in chapters and subchapters, while the images and pictures have been uploaded separately. Each module is followed by a set of multiple choice questions. The multiple choice tests have been transformed in GIFT format for a centralized upload. An online conference room has been configured for questions and answers between tutors and trainees. Nevertheless, synchronous (chat) and asynchronous (forum) communication instruments have been also implemented on the platform. The trainees have been organized in cohorts , which were assigned to the courses categories on the project's languages. The configured and implemented platform is available at the URL address: www.advan2tex.eu/portal/ .

Nissan, Ephraim. "A naming situation captured in episodic formulae: how a publisher accepted his funder’s suggestion as to how to name his small press (and later found out the Italian word had been the name of a little dog that ketchup heiress used to have)." In International Conference on Onomastics “Name and Naming”. Editura Mega, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/62.

Abstract:
Episodic formulae are a representational technique that emerged from artificial intelligence in order to capture the gist of situations and epistemic states in a narrative plot. Arguably, this formalism can be applied as well to complex situations of name-bestowing and evolving perceptions of the name adopted. In the situation we analyse with epistemic formulae in this paper, the Manhattan entrepreneur who had launched a literary magazine and then found a very affluent funder for also starting a book operation, expectably felt obliged to accept her suggestion of a name for his firm. At the time, in New York City he could be expected to find out easily that the name Ecco was the Italian adverb ecco for ‘here is…’ or ‘here you go’ and so forth. Eventually, he found out that the ketchup heiress who funded him had suggested to him the name of her beloved little dog that she once owned. This time, it was private knowledge, rather than available knowledge. One can figure out (from general patterns of how people feel or behave) that she wanted a memorial for her dog, and the publisher could be expected to have made sense of that once aware, but it also brought to the fore how their balance of power affected what she could afford vis-à-vis him. The set of formulae shown here illustrates the potential for onomastic research to develop a rigorous representation for situational constellations of name-bestowing and bearing a name that thus far it could explain just informally in narrative form.

Zanders, Viesturs. "Soviet Disinformation and Latvian Diaspora after World War II." In International scientific conference of the University of Latvia. University of Latvia Press, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.22364/ms22.16.

Abstract:
The topicality of the study is determined by the fact that the currently widespread Russian disinformation policy is rooted in the experience amassed during the Soviet period, including the attempts to influence the Latvian diaspora living outside Latvia. Until now, research has highlighted the public political activities of diaspora organizations, neglecting the publications they produced. However, the documents available in the memory institutions of Latvia permit the researchers to reveal in sufficient detail the process of preparation and dissemination of these publications, as well as the frequently contradictory assessment of these publications. The aim of the research is, by using a range of unpublished documents and press publications of Latvians in exile community, which have not previously been included in the scientific circulation, to ascertain the experience of the Latvian exile society in the context of spreading true information about the history of Latvia and the situation in occupied Latvia, as well as evaluating the risks that could be caused by the uncritical use of Soviet publications sent to Latvians in the diaspora. The Latvian National Foundation (LNF, founded in Stockholm in 1947) can be considered the most consistent producer of such publications over a longer period of time. The materials released by LNF include publications that use sources of information available in the free world, as well as texts and images received from Latvia, which are published under cover names. A fair part of LNF’s publications was released in foreign languages (English, Swedish, German, etc.), as their target audience was the policy makers of Western countries. Some of the publications of LNF predominantly display the characteristics of representative gifts, but in general they form a significant part of Latvian publishing, – a contribution to maintaining the idea of the continuity of Latvian statehood. Relatively intensive sending of printed materials of occupied Latvia to Latvians in exile, starting from the second half of the 1950s, raises discussions about the value and place of these publications on the bookshelves of Latvians in exile. The findings of the research yield new insights into the role of certain organizations (in this case, the Latvian National Foundation) in Latvian book publishing in exile and the experience of the diaspora in dealing with Soviet disinformation.

Abstract:
Die Publikation gibt Einblicke in die internationale Studie MEDIAdelcom (Critical Exploration of Media Related Risks and Opportunities for Deliberative Communication: Development Scenarios of the European Media Landscape), einem EU finanzierten internationalen Forschungsprojekt (Horizon 2020).
