Abstract:
Given the coterie of philosophers focused on everyday aesthetics, it's fascinating that gift reception has heretofore managed to escape their scrutiny. To enact a gift, recipients begin by imagining its use. On this level, gifts serve as a litmus test. In luring us, we're taken out of our normal ways of being to experience a different side of ourselves. Enacting a gift is thus a kind of performance, whose value depends on the donee’s interpretation, just as exhibitions, concerts, staged plays or books are performances of visual art, scores, scripts or texts, whose interpretations demonstrate their aesthetic value. To develop the relationship between enacting gifts and performing artworks, I begin by surveying junctures along the gift-event’s arc: reply, imagination, trust, recognition, transformation and memory. Transformations arising from agonistic gifts strike me as significant because they characterise the way gifts challenge our beliefs, eventually altering our values. That we grow to love gifts, which we originally rejected out of hand, casts doubt on self-knowledge. Enacted gifts handily challenge self-knowledge’s twin features: authority and transparency. As this paper indicates, gift reception helps both to understand ourselves better and to remove the obstacles to what Quassim Cassim calls Substantive Self-Knowledge.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article reconsiders the gift within London's sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century livery companies. Previous research into guild gift-giving cultures has focused exclusively upon substantial bequests of money and property by mercantile elites to the ‘great twelve’ livery companies. Through charitable gifts, citizens established godly reputations and legacies, perpetuated through the guild institution. It is argued here that a rich culture of material gift-giving, hitherto overlooked by historians, also thrived within London's craft guilds. Drawing on company gift books, inventories, and material survivals from guild collections, this article examines typologies of donors and gifts, the anticipated ‘returns’ on the gift by the recipient company, and the ideal spatial and temporal contexts for gift-giving. This material approach reveals that master artisans negotiated civic status, authority, and memory through the presentation of a wide range of gifted artefacts for display and ritual use in London's livery halls. Moreover, this culture of gift-giving was so deep-rooted and significant that it survived the Reformation upheavals largely intact. Finally, the embellishment of rituals of gifting, and the synchronization of gifting and feasting rites from the second half of the sixteenth century, are further evidence for the resurgence of English civic culture in this era.

Abstract:
Alfred W. Bennett (1833-1902), better known to posterity as a botanist, was active as a publisher in London in the eighteen-sixties. Almost uniquely amongst his contemporaries, Bennett specialized in books illustrated with mounted photographic prints for the middle-class market. Every year, new ‘photographic gift books’ would be released to coincide with the Christmas season of giving. Subject matter was mainly topographical or literary. Text and images were associated creatively; design, typography and photographic printing were of the highest quality. While Bennett’s career in photographically illustrated books was brief, starting in 1861 and ending in 1868, he made a distinctive contribution to the creation and development of the genre in Britain. The article evaluates Bennett’s career and impact, covering the following topics: the Quaker context that influenced Bennett’s activity as a publisher and photograph dealer; Bennett’s invention of the photographic gift book as a genre; synergy with Lovell Reeve, another pioneering photographic book publisher; the crucial importance of literary tourism for Bennett’s output; assimilation of the concept of the Picturesque within photographic illustration; the extension of subject matter to Continental Europe; and the decline of the photographically illustrated book business in the hands of Bennett’s successor Abraham Provost.

Abstract:
The author reviews John Barclay’s book Paul and the Gift, considering it one of the most important theological books in recent years. He asks whether the so-called “perfected” gift always manifests an extreme and proposes that it can sometimes also visualize an optimal mean between the opposites. The author further compares Barclay’s concept of “incongruity” with the medieval view of meritum de congruo, arguing that that the latter can also represent such generosity which is typical of God’s gift.

Abstract:
Purpose – Through an empirical analysis of a consumption community, the purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the theories of gift-giving, sharing and commodity exchange should not be kept separated but integrated into a unifying model. Design/methodology/approach – The paper provides new evidence about Bookcrossing.com, whose members share and give books as gifts; that is, physical goods rather than digital ones as in most of the communities considered in the literature. This community is analysed with qualitative tools, such as netnography, personal interviews and participant observation. Findings – The main result of the analysis of Bookcrossing is that gift-giving is not the only process responsible for value creation and distribution in consumption communities: sharing and commodity exchange also play a role. Furthermore, the paper provides new evidence about aspects of gift-giving and sharing that have received limited attention in the literature: collective reciprocity and anonymous sharing. Research limitations/implications – The limitations are related to the intrinsic properties of the methods employed (netnography, personal interviews and participant observation) and to the paper, which analyses only one community and one product category. The implications refer to the role of gift-giving in consumption communities and its relationships with other processes: consumer gift systems are not only gifting platforms, but they and the elements of sharing and commodity exchange need to be integrated. Practical implications – The empirical evidence and implications matter for the organisation and management of collaborative consumption platforms and the way in which traditional business models could and should interact with these platforms in an increasing number of businesses. Originality/value – The paper adds new evidence of and original insights into gift-giving and collective forms of exchange. Moreover, it provides managerial implications of the analysed community for the book publishing industry.

One of the most magnificent collections of pre-modern Chinese books kept in Europe, was brought to France by Joachim Bouvet, a French missionary, in the 17th century. It is widely accepted that these 49 volumes of Chinese books were a gift from the Chinese emperor Kangxi to Louis XIV, the King of France, with Bouvet, the person who brought the books, believed to have been appointed as the Kangxi Emperor’s special envoy. However, as I intend to show here, it may be that neither was Bouvet a special envoy, nor were the books a gift from the Chinese emperor.

This article explains about the Islamic law of gift from Bank to customers related to saving and gyro accounts of Islamic Bank. The Islamic Banks give gift directly and indirectly to new ettstomers and old customers through drawing (qur'ah) or lottery and non-drawing. There are disputes (ikhtilaf) among Islamic Law Experts (Fuqaha’) about the status of law when Islamic Banks give the gift. Hanafi and Syafi'i Schools of thought opined that the gift can be given to the customers as long as there is no agreement between bank and costomers meanwhile the banks still have a debt to consumers, this is permissible. Maliki and Hanbali schools opined that the gift is not permissible during the time of borrowing and lending. Majority Islamic Exsperts allow to give gift after banks have already paid back the debt to consumers as long as there is no agreement between bank and cusiomers, but Maliki School do not allow lo give gift at that condition. Also, for giving gift should free from gambling or elements of gambling (muqamarah). The method of this article is using literature reviews from classical Islamic Law's books and contemporary Islamic law's books related to drawing or lottery and gambling, meanwhile the aims if this mticle are to investigate the law status if gift from bank to new customers and old customers with direct and indirect ways. Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the evidence for books associated with kings in Anglo-Saxon England, making the case for the ninth century as the key period of change. A wide variety of books were probably present in the household of later Anglo-Saxon kings. There was a degree of connection between the gift of books by kings and practices of ownership. The donation of gospel-books to favoured churches played a distinctive role, emphasizing the king's position in ecclesiastical leadership. In a number of cases, gospel-books associated with kings subsequently acted as a repository for documents, entered in blank spaces or additional leaves by scribes at the recipient church. Certain aspects of this practice strengthen the case for identifying two late Anglo-Saxon gospel-books as royal gifts. Books given by kings had a numinous quality arising from their royal associations. The possible strategies underpinning the dissemination of this ‘royal’ culture are explored.

In article gift inscriptions on books from the funds of the Lviv National Scientific Library of Ukraine named after V. Stefanyk, found in the process of preparation in the department of scientific bibliography of a multi-volume bibliographic index “Ukrainian book in Galicia, Bukovina, Transcarpathia, Volhynia and in exile, 1914–1939” are considered. The presence of inscriptions on books of this period indicates that gifts were one of the important sources of enrichment of public and private book collections, so they play an important role in studying the history of these libraries. A special role was played by the library of Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv and the book collection “Studion”, thanks to which Lviv National Scientific Library of Ukraine named after V. Stefanyk received the richest collection of Ukrainian. Some elements of the script play a bibliological role, in particular, help to supplement the bibliographic description in the absence of some of its components, especially the source information. They also contain additional information about the donor and the addressee, which allows the researcher to detail their biographies, reveal the range of family and friendly relations, scientific and social relationships. The library of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine (NMHU) contains printed editions originating from the book collection of Khvedir (Teodor) Vovk (Volkov). The affiliation of these editions to the said book collection is evidenced by the presence of proprietary autographs, gift inscriptions, bookplates and stamps of Khvedir Vovk's library. Analyzing the range of books allows you to find out the range of scientific contacts and interests of the library owner. Оwn library Khvedir Vovk began collecting in Paris, where he lived and worked in 1887—1905. In 1905 he moved his book collection to St. Petersburg. Аccording to the testament, the Khvedir Vovk's library in 1920 entered to the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. In 1921 on the basis of this book collection at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology named after Khvedir Vovk was founded the Library. It is probable, that the first books from the Khvedir Vovk's library in 1934 entered to the book collection of the Central Historical Museum of Ukraine (predecessor of NMHU), after the disbandment of the Cabinet (former Museum) of Anthropology and Ethnology named after Khvedir Vovk. The modern book collection of the NMHU contains French-language and Russian-language books, representing the products of the printing houses of Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon and St. Petersburg of 1725—1821. These are quite rare publications on the history of Ukraine, in particular the Cossacks, and the ethnography of the peoples of the world. They marked with bookplates and proprietary autographs of Khvedir Vovk or prints of the stamp of the Library of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology named after Khvedir Vovk. The range of these antique books determines certain aspects of scientific interests of Khvedir Vovk. Books with gift inscriptions to Khvedir Vovk determine the range of scientific and private contacts of Khvedir Vovk with colleagues and friends, in particular representatives of the St. Petersburg's Ukrainian diaspora.

Abstract:
AbstractGenerally speaking, nature is supposed to have disappeared from theology when the natural sciences emerged after the beginning of modernity. The gap between these sciences became zuider and wider, with the effect of lacking almost all contact. Several factors played a role in the rejection of theology in general of philosophical-theological attempts in which themes such as nature and creation could flourish. In practical theology it is possible to broaden our theology of communicative action in such a way that our communication with nature and about nature can also be taken into account. Then we have to take both divine gift and divine challenge in nature seriously, with gifl' and 'challenge' being communicative terms, and make a distinction between nature's divine gift and nature's divine challenge. Theology speaks of two books where we can find knowledge about God: the book of nature and the book of the Word of God. A hermeneutically mediated experience of God happens when the revelation in nature is inscribed into the texts of the Bible, and the texts of the Bible are inscribed into the book of nature. Our traditional speaking about God should therefore be complemented by both aniconic and nonanthropomorphic speaking about him, because it implies a way to experiencing God in nature - especially for those who are unchurched, and among the unchurched especially for those who define themselves as 'enlightened' and 'modern' people inclined to free, abstract thinking and cherishing their autonomy.

In Japan there is a culture of gift-giving, known as zōtōbunka. This culture is done every year in summer and winter to honor superiors or to maintain relationships between relatives. With the development of times and the incidence of financial crisis in the 1990s, this culture began to be abandoned by the Japanese because of various factors including the economic factors of capitalist society. This study analyzed using descriptive analytical approach with the main data corpus of books, electronic books, websites on the internet, news articles, magazines, and so on. Culture of gift-giving in Japan is explained also with cultural history that originated in China and the trend in Japan today. The conclusion of this paper described the problems in Japan's culture of gift-giving in addition to economic problems, the problem stems from a change or transition from an agrarian society to capitalist society.

Abstract The Gift: Forms and Functions of Exchange in Archaic Societies, by Marcel Mauss, is an important reference in Social Sciences for thinking about the theme of the gift, proposed in this congress. This brief work has as goal to present a rereading of The Gift by contemporary authors that try to think today’s society under this perspective. It’s a literature review of books and articles by Allain Caillé, Jacques Godbout and some Brazilian authors: Eric Sabourin, Marcos Lanna, Paulo Henrique Martins and Jorge Luiz Villela. It is important to emphasize, according to Caillé, 1998, that “the paradigm of the gift is not a machine for blowing solutions, but for inspiring questions”.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess patients' awareness of and attitudes toward physicians' receiving gifts from the pharmaceutical industry. The Alger County Community Health Study was a self-report survey targeting rural Alger County, Michigan. The survey (completion rate 10.1%) addressed issues on health, demographics, and patients' awareness of and attitudes toward gifts to physicians. Rates of awareness of gifts were: drug samples, 94 percent; ballpoint pens, 76.2 percent; medical books, 38 percent; conference/travel expenses, 34 percent; dinner out, 36.6 percent; spouse meal at dinner out, 23 percent; golf tournament fees, 19.0 percent. Rates of “approval” of physicians' accepting gifts were: drug samples, 69 percent; ballpoint pens, 54.2 percent; medical books, 49 percent; conference/travel expenses, 14 percent; dinner out, 12.1 percent; spouse meal at dinner out, 7 percent; golf tournament fees, 3.7 percent. Patients' approval of gifts seems to be related to the perceived value of the gift to patients as well as its monetary value. The patient population in the current study seems to be less approving of gifts to physicians than patients surveyed in the 1990s. Patients' opinions should be considered when establishing ethical guidelines and policies regulating physician-industry interaction.

Abstract:
The paper studies the semantics sources of the motif of false in literary works of V. M. Shukshin and his non-fiction texts – donation inscriptions. Donation inscriptions are considered as material for revealing the understanding of the gift by Shukshin, i. e. as the psycho-biographical analysis data, which may be useful for interpreting the motif of the gift in the writer’s work. The process of giving and a gift in the works of Shukshin acquire original symbolism, steadily repeated in a number of works. Several donation inscriptions by V. M. Shukshin left on books (his and other writers’) and photographs contain the motif of a false gift. This motif is often emphasized in the Shukshin’s autographs by indicating the purpose of the gift inscription or by using the imperative. In the prose of V. M. Shukshin, a gift is very often an imaginary, false, empty gift. However, in a number of stories (“Small сapron Christmas tree,” “Brother-in-law Sergey Sergeevich,” “Exam”), the gift motif acquires infernal features. The formation of such a perception of giving and a gift may be due to the circumstances of Shukshin’s personal life, his psychological characteristics, and facts of his biography. The analysis leads to the conclusion that in the Shukshin’s artistic world, a gift is very often understood as a false, imaginary gift, a substitute for a real gift, which is also an attribute of a demonic, evil spirit.

Successful research of official documents, preserved in Lithuanian State Historical Archive (one of them The books of gifts to Vilnius University, 1820–1832), and the Activity daybook (1823–1832) of Vilnius University Library, as well as lists of donated books, preserved in the Library of Helsinki National University (Catalogus librorum qui bis extant in Bibliotheca Caesareae Universitatis Vilnensis) and in Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine (Katalog ksiąg dubletowych Biblioteki Uniwesyteckiej Wilenskiej oddanych dla zgorzaley Biblioteki Abowskiej i tamże odeslanych roku 1829 dnia 28 lutego), allowed us to specify chronology of this charity act, discover its effectors in Vilnius, and provide qualitative and quantitative parameters of donated books. It was identified, that the shipment of books delivered from Vilnius no earlier than 1829 February 28, consisted of 1481 volumes, mainly doublet books on different topics, which were deposited to the Helsinki University. Alexander Wictor Bohatkiewicz, a librarian and a bibliographer in Vilnius University Library, played a crucial role in the selection of the books. At present, the best part of the donated books is preserved in the National Library of Helsinki University. Completed research makes a premise to a historical digital reconstruction of the donated collection.

Abstract:
The tradition of book-making is closely connected with the formation and development of private library collections in Russia in the 18th century, which began its development with representatives of the noble class as the main book-holders who had the opportunity to purchase fairly expensive publications. Subsequently, the transfer of books began to spread among the middle strata, who viewed book-making primarily as a kind of mark for summing up a certain stage in their life – training, service, etc. Often on such gifts, short inscriptions (inscripts) were applied, containing personal information of a different nature. This work is dedicated to the inscriptions on the civil press books of the 18th century from the collections of Tambov second-hand booksellers. We prove that a careful reading of the dedicatory inscriptions allows us to trace the motives of do-nation, the nature of the relationship between second-hand booksellers and the history of their collections. Thanks to the conducted work, we create new and supplement the existing meetings of book owners. We show the connections of individuals with institutions revealed through donation inscriptions. We trace the individual trajectories of individual editions, which can be identified through the presence of the records of several donors who consecutively donated books. Consideration of the scripts allows us to present the book as a translator of the personality of its owner and a reflection of historical events.

Abstract:
AbstractGenerally speaking, nature is supposed to have disappeared from theology when the natural sciences emerged after the beginning of modernity. The gap between these sciences became wider and wider, with the effect of lacking almost all contact. Several factors played a role in the rejection of theology in general of philosophical-theological attempts in which themes such as nature and creation could flourish. In practical theology it is possible to broaden our theology of communicative action in such a way that our communication with nature and about nature can also be taken into account. Then we have to take both divine gift and divine challenge in nature seriously, with 'gift' and 'challenge' being communicative terms, and make a distinction between nature's divine gift and nature's divine challenge.

Abstract:
In the Aatruppatai texts, under the title of Eegai (Charity), it is examined how it has been developed from the position of the character to duty, with the change of meaning over time. It has been highlighted that hospitality is the foundation of Tamil culture. Out of the patthuppaattu, the information about the charity is discussed through the five Aatruppatai books: Thirumurukaatrupadai, Porunaratrupadai, Sirupanatrupadai, Perumbaanatrupadai, and Kootharaatrupadai, which is also known as Malaipadukadam, whereby poverty, on one hand, and prosperity, on the other, the unequal compromise that exists in society between the giver and the receiver, has been examined. It has been pointed out that the gift to the Panars differs from the gift given to the poets. It is summed up that the emperors, chieftains, and chieftains gifted them rich dresses, ornaments, their ruled kingdoms, towns, mountains, lotus made of gold, chariots, horses, elephants, and oxen, and food items to the people who came to them, and the ordinary people supplied food items and toddy in their possession in return. The Tamils who excelled in charity have been explained in detail.

Abstract:
A personal or family library is an indispensable and significant element of an educated person’s life. Of particular value are writers’ libraries, which are formed both by buying new publications and by receiving books as a gift, and usually with friendly inscriptions. The study of a writer’s library helps to clarify the author’s reading circle and identify possible influences. Gift inscriptions help to determine the level of relationship. Interest in books, reading circle, possibility to understand and discuss the readings are important characteristics of literary characters. The article examines the legacy of N. V. Gogol, I. S. Turgenev, L. N. Tolstoy, B. K. Zaitsev, K. G. Paustovsky, M. M. Prishvin and A. T. Tvardovsky. The analysis shows that the literary tradition of homestead and dacha reading and library collecting, which was formed in the 19th century, was developed in the works of the 20th century authors.

Abstract:
The Albums de la Pléiade are a book series whose aim is to promote the prestigious Bibliothèque de la Pléiade (Gallimard). Intended as a free gift to readers who purchase three volumes of the Bibliothèque, these books contain writer's biographies, illustrated by a rich and diverse iconography. While these ‘icono-biographies’ are inevitably centered around literature, which is intrinsic to authors’ lives, the figure of the writer, as it is presented by these books, constitutes the actual core of the Albums’ marketing strategy and the brand appeal of the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade. This study examines the ways in which the Albums de la Pléiade portray canonical writers within the frame of a euphemized marketing strategy that aims to maintain and borrow from the prestige of the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade while simultaneously concealing their commercial goal.

Abstract:
The results of the study about books' life after buying are described in the article. The main objective of the study is to reveal how readers use a book in consumer culture. We tried to answer such questions: if the novelty is important for our attitude to the book; for which necessities people buy books; if the book is an item for one-time use or it is reusable in fact; how often people use the home or public libraries etc. 221 people completed this questionnaire (65,6% — women, 34,4% — men). Three-quarters of respondents are under the age of 35, 19% — readers aged 36 to 50 years old, 5,5% — over 51. One part of the questions deals with buying books, other ones — with using them. According to the survey, 43% of readers buy used books, a little over a quarter don't do it, other readers sometimes can buy second-hand books. Almost half of the readers do not pay attention to whether the book is a novelty of the publishing house; half of the respondents are ready to buy a book published a few years ago if the topic is of interest. The majority choose fictional books for personal or professional development. Almost half of the respondents buy books as a gift (more often for children than for adults). The questions about using books gave us the following results. Only about one-sixth of survey participants often borrow books from friends, while about 57% are willing to share their books with other people. More than half of respondents occasionally reread books stored at home, but 42% of people don't do this. Less than 15% of respondents are active users of public libraries. Most respondents prefer reading at home on the bed or the couch, almost 70% also like reading in transport. About half of the respondents make no mark in the books, the rest can emphasize, bookmark, perish corners, write comments, etc. The results of the research can be used to study the behavior of buyers by publishing houses or bookstores, to design the publication, in the study of consumer culture in general, etc.

A student of mine, Andy Ohrman, received a thoughtful but unusual gift from his sister. It is an old arithmetic book she had stumbled on at a New England yard sale. Although the pages are brittle and browned by time, their contents are quite legible. Knowing that her brother is studying to be a mathematics teacher, she purchased it for him. The book's front page bears the title The Columbian Arithmetician and declared the author's ambitious mission to present a “New System of Theoretical and Practical Arithmetic Performed in Simple and Compound Numbers adopted to the Commerce of the United States and Designed for the Instruction of Youth.” Its author remains anonymous, identifying himself pointedly as “an American”; however, the printer is clearly designated as William Allen of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and the year of publication 1811. Andy knew of my interest in old mathematics books and lent it to me to read.

In 1998, President Clinton donated five hundred English-language books about the United States to the Peking University Library in a high-profile tribute to the role of academic institutions in China’s sociopolitical development during the twentieth century. However, few people know that this canny donation was quietly preceded in 1995 by a gift from the Peking University Library of five hundred Chinese-language books about China to a small U.S. academic library. Although they had different motives and outcomes, these donations indicate a promising role for academic library exchanges in China–U.S. relations and demonstrate the potential benefits of international librarianship in general.

Abstract:
The article summarizes some material on the study of the imam-khatyb of Moscow Cathedral Mosque Ahmetzyan Mustafin’s library (1902– 1986). The analysis of Mustafin’s book collection is determined not only by purely bookish interest, but also by the intention to study more thoroughly the daily life of a prominent Muslim religious figure of the Soviet times, his reading interests, his attitude to the book culture, his approach for collecting religious and reference literature. The chronological scope of the collection includes books and manuscripts up to the late eighteenth century — and until the 1970s and early 1980s. Mustafin’s library contains books in Arabic, Turkish, Tatar and Farsi. It also covers various spheres of Muslim theology — Qur’anic exegetics (tafsir), prophetic traditions (hadith), the biographies of the Prophet and his companions (sira), history (tarih), religious law and its methodology (fiqh wa usul al-fiqh), morality (akhlaq), mysticism (tasawwuf) and philosophy (falsafa). Dictionaries occupy a significant place, as well as various editions from the 1960–80s (for example, Qur’an commentaries) brought from foreign trips or received as a gift from foreign guests. Of interest are Tashkent editions of the Qur’an — the fact that expands the idea of Islamic institutions existence in the USSR. We also tried to keep track of the marginal notes on the books.

Abstract:
The inventory lists of private library collections may be counted among the most significant sources for the study of the history of books in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. These inventories provide a true picture of the reading material used in a given historical period and reveal their owners’ spiritual preoccupations as well as those of their contemporaries. Many books listed in the inventories had disappeared from the collections over time, so the inventories remain the sole indicators helping us to reconstruct the spiritual life of the different social environments. The inventories deserve to be treated with exceptional reverence by the book historians.Example used by the author to show the type of information that might be learned from the inventory of a private library is the inventory of books that Nikola Pavlov de Gondola of Dubrovnik gave as a gift, in 1469, to the Benedictine monastery of St. Mary’s on the island of Lokrum near Dubrovnik. The inventory list comprises sixteen titles; among them are two milestones, Boccaccio’s The Decameron and Genealogies of the Gentile Gods. The two are the oldest specimens of these books ever to be discovered in Croatia. Using the standard methodology for book inventory analysis, developed by the so-called ‘middle generation’ of book historians, the author first establishes which book the inventory entry refers to and, then, he supplies information on the book. Finally, for the most important books, he sketches for the reader a wider context of the book ownership and use. The author also stresses the importance of the numerous private library inventories kept in the archives of Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, etc. He argues that the publication and an in-depth analysis of the surviving inventories would supply valuable information not only on the books bought and read by their owners but also on the intellectual and cultural preoccupations of the social environments (towns) in which the owners lived.

The study delves into terminologies associated with beauty within biblical contexts. Drawing from Dyrness’s examination of “Aesthetics in the Old Testament” the focus is primarily on seven Hebrew word groups to understand the multifaceted nuances of beauty. The exploration further extends to two foundational Hebrew terms, kābôd and tôḇ, essential for grasping the essence of beauty in the Old Testament. Additionally, three Greek terms from the Septuagint—agathós, kalós, and chresós—are explored, bridging the understanding between the deuterocanonical books, the New Testament, and their Hebrew counterparts. It has highlighted that understanding the biblical concept of beauty surpasses mere terminological exploration. Illustratively, the narratives of Judith and Esther are examined to demonstrate how their beauty played a strategic role in the welfare and salvation of the people.
