Gigantochloa levis and G. scortechinii bamboo species were evaluated as material for plybamboo production. Plybamboo was composed of three layers with 12 mm thickness and used phenol formaldehyde (PF) as their binder. Representative samples were cut and tested for bonding, physical, mechanical, and finishing properties. Results indicated that G. levis plybamboo exhibited higher bending strength property compared to G. scortechinii plybamboo, as indicated by its higher modulus of rupture (121 N/mm2) and modulus of elasticity (16300 N/mm2). The G. levis plybamboo also displayed higher bond shear

Fiber morphology of 3 species of bamboo namely Bambusa vulgaris, Gigantochloa levis, and Gigantochloa scortechinii at age of 1, 3, and 5 years, was evaluated. It shows that different species of bamboo have different properties in terms of their fiber morphology that consist of fiber length, fiber diameter, and lumen diameter. Fiber diameter, fiber length, and cell wall thickness increased with the increasing of the bamboo age but the lumen diameter decreased when the bamboo gets older. This paper presents an experimental study about injection moulding parameters effect on fracture toughness of polypropylene-nanoclay-gigantochloa-scortechinii nanocomposites with 0 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% of bamboo fibre content. The selected parameters were melt temperature, packing pressure, screw speed and filling time. The composite samples were injection moulded from a material consisting of polypropylene, bamboo fibres, compatibilizer, and nanoclay. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics method according to ASTM D5045 was used to evaluate the fracture toughness. The experimental design was m

This paper discusses the results from a study that has been undertaken to develop a product from bamboo culm’s outer skin that was considered as wastes. Initially, by means of a simple process of gluing and pressing, bamboo panel composites were produced with Gigantochloa scortechinii bamboo skin wastes. Using existing sandwich technology, layered or sandwich panel were then produced using the bamboo skin wastes panel as the core material while plywood were used as the outer layer. The aim was to access the bending strength of the bamboo skin wastes panel, the sandwich panel and subsequently t

Abstract In this study, the suitability of Semantan bamboo (Gigantochloa scortechinii) particles in the production of single-layered composite board was investigated. The effects of different resin types and lower resin content levels on the basic properties (mechanical and physical properties) of particle composite board made from G. scortechinii were determined. The 12-mm thickness boards with dimension of 340 × 340 mm and targeted density of 660 kg/m3 were fabricated. Types of resin used were melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF) and urea formaldehyde (UF), while resin content levels were 3.5 an

Bamboo is known as economically and environmental friendly plant. The most common application of bamboos is furniture and traditional handcrafts. Many studies on mechanical and physical properties of bamboo have been conducted. However the thermal insulation property of these abundance species has never been recognized and commercially utilized which results in the reason why thermal properties of bamboo have never been studied. In this experiment, two species of bamboo which are Akar bamboo (Dendracalamus pendulus) and Semantan bamboo (Gigantochloa scortechinii) has been tested to determine t
