Broderick, Laura. "Gigs and Grub: How the Gig Economy Impacts Restaurant Industry Performance." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1141.

Abstract:
In the last ten years, the gig economy has become a significant part of the labor market. Consumers depend on the services provided by people performing gig work, particularly as on-demand services are increasingly desired. Another trend that has developed is the rise of fast casual restaurants due to their relatively inexpensive and quick service while simultaneously providing unique and interesting cuisine options. I examined if there was a relationship between the rise of these emerging sectors of the economy through looking at the performance of limited service eating place establishments using a panel data regression model at the Metropolitan Statistical Area level from 2006 to 2015. I concluded that there is a negative relationship between the number gig firms and the number limited service eating places and no relationship between the number gig firms and the annual payroll of limited service eating places. With opposite results from those hypothesized, I recommend ways to improve the research and propose alternative research questions to answer looking at the gig economy and the restaurant industry.

Abstract:
The present project provides a survey of contemporary work relations in the context of the so-called gig economy (also known as the sharing, collaborative, platform, and on-demand economy). Against the background of recent concerns over automation replacing work at a large scale, the project argues instead that the displacement of work warrants more critical attention. The project examines how the gig economy presents their services as automating technologies while downplaying the ways that workers' employment, not to mention lives, are made increasingly precarious by these alleged improvements. Specifically, the project surveys three gig-economies, the ride-hailing service Uber, the home-sharing service Airbnb, and the online labor marketplace Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT). Methodologically, the project employs an interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from political economy, critical theory, discourse analysis, and ethnographic research. A qualitative assessment of the respective work environments shifts a relatively apolitical discourse on the future of work not only toward a more pronounced critique of the gig economy, but also toward a renewed discussion on the kinds of jobs that earn the labels of freelance and entrepreneurship. Professionals and scholars concerned with the future of work stand to benefit from the findings of the research, particularly as it challenges some commonplace assumptions in the discourse of what has been termed postcapitalism.

Work, Nicholas Christopher. "The Gig is Up: The Disjunction of Gig Economy Labor and the American Welfare State." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/90784.

Full text
Abstract:
The gig economy has rapidly become something of a phenomenon in the digital economy today. New firms are quickly being added to this digital market ecosphere and the business model has garnered the attention of the business and investor communities as a new organizational alternative to standard hierarchies. However this new business model also poses substantial problems for its workers, who as independent contractors are not afforded the benefits or rights of the welfare state that are granted to employees. As the gig economy continues to achieve financial success and holds a more prominent place in our labor force, the precarious state of gig labor is becoming an increasingly political problem. This thesis explores the present state of labor in the gig economy by situating it within the context of welfare state scholarship. I examine how the inner mechanics of the gig economy operate, as well as examine the structures of the American welfare state that create this dualist divide between contractors and employees. I argue that welfare state scholarship demonstrates a path by which gig laborers and gig firms can form cross class alliances that can help develop new welfare state policies to improve gig worker conditions and be supported by gig firms themselves.

Terry, G. "Climate, change and insecurity : views from a Gisu hillside." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2011. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/40469/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study I investigate the significance of climate variability and extremes (and by analogy, climate change) for human security in an African context of multiple risks, shocks and stresses. I consider the sociocultural dynamics of people’s responses to these diverse threats and their implications for climate adaptation. The location is a poor hillside village in Uganda. Its Gisu inhabitants rely on subsistence farming and are exposed to climate variability and extremes as well as acute land scarcity and environmental degradation. I interviewed over 80 men and women in different structural positions and with different social identities. Destructive rainfall destroys food crops, erodes soil and triggers landslides. Analysing these impacts helps to build understanding of the possible context-specific consequences of climate change in East African highland communities. Villagers’ ability to cope with and adapt to destructive rainfall is socially differentiated, with gender relations an important influence. The impacts of destructive rainfall contribute to a complex cycle of human insecurity, which needs to be viewed as an integrated whole. Hunger and poverty are at the core; but tensions, contestations and conflicts among differently-placed social actors are also prominent. Some of these socially-constructed threats are associated with unequal power relations and maladaptive responses to deteriorating environmental and economic conditions. The metaphor of ‘threat landscapes’ is useful for explaining differences and changes in individuals’ awareness of threats and the epistemic limitations of subjective accounts. Responses to climate and non-climate threats alike are shaped by cultural norms, values and traditions. They can be undermined, as well as supported, by conjugal, kin and community relations and by governance institutions and actors. Sociocultural issues such as these should be at the centre of climate adaptation narratives because they are critical to adaptive capacity.

Abstract:
Time-interleaving Analog-to-Digital Converters allows for increased sampling rates at the cost of added signal distortion. This article considers a system where Timing Jitter is counteracted by a Trace and Hold module, and investigates existing calibration methods for Offset and Gain mismatch which either make use of an additive calibration sequence, calculates and compares subchannel energy, or bandlimits the input signal. Certain modifications are made to each of the algorithms allowing more versatile systems, or higher performance. The performance of a calibration method will be judged by it's average estimation error, possible worst-case outcomes and their impact on the system's stability. A number of modifications which aim to potentially reduce the Mean Square Error or improve the estimator's diversity are introduced. The various systems are tested using both white noise input, and inputs containing several sinusoidal components. The numerical simulations illustrate some of the difficulties involved in designing a blind or partially blind Gain calibration system, compared to one relying on a training signal. For the method using a training signal, an algorithm designed to resemble a Maximum A Posteriori estimator is shown to offer increased performance. The modifications to the Gain calibration method are shown to be moderately beneficial, depending on the situation. The calibration system which relies on oversampling is modified so it can be expanded to calibrate Gain mismatch for any even number of ADCs, which is shown to work under certain circumstances.

Abstract:
A new design of a non-magnetic high-pressure anvil cell for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments at Giga-Pascal pressures is presented, which uses a micro-coil inside the pressurized region for high-sensitivity NMR. The comparably small cell has a length of 22 mm and a diameter of 18 mm, so it can be used with most NMR magnets. The performance of the cell is demonstrated with externalforce vs. internal-pressure experiments, and the cell is shown to perform well at pressures up to 23.5 GPa using 800 μm 6H-SiC large cone Boehler-type anvils. 1H, 23Na, 27Al, 69Ga, and 71Ga NMR test measurements are presented, which show a resolution of better than 4.5 ppm, and an almost maximum possible signal-to-noise ratio.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of self-employed has been rising and it is estimated that 20–30% of the working-age population in the EU-15 and the U.S. is involved in some form of independent work. This growth is driven by technological advancements, changing work values and an overall need to adapt to a high-change environment. This has given rise to a new term: the gig economy. The IT and Business consulting industry has started to tap further into the gig economy and has started to realize that it could be beneficial to interact with gig workers in new ways, since current arrangements with subcontracting consultants are insufficient. In order to redesign current arrangements in an efficient way, it is of interest to gain a greater understanding of the incumbents’ perspectives. This thesis investigates what motivational factors that are the most distinguishing to work in the gig economy in the IT and Business consulting industry. Thereto, possibilities and limitations for transferring theories of entrepreneurial motivation to the gig economy are discussed. Further, the thesis elaborates upon how the findings can be used in practice and what insights they provide for redesigning consultancies. The thesis employed a case study methodology where semi-structured interviews with gig workers in the context of this study were conducted. The study was influenced by previous research in entrepreneurial motivation, a closely related area within self-employment. The result is that the most distinguishing motivational factors are independence and development. A motivation for independence expresses itself in wanting to decide which projects to take on as well as where and when, and not having a superior that tells you what to do. A motivation for development involves the need for learning new things, improve your skills, and take on challenges. Networking and building relationships are important parts of being a gig worker and often necessities, but even though some gig workers really enjoyed these activities, it is hard to determine whether they are motivating in themselves. Thereto, it was found that monetary rewards were not motivational per se, but a necessity for working. The motivational factors were found to be rooted in the inherent motivations of high need for achievement, desire for independence, internal locus of control, and high self-efficacy. Lastly, there are both possibilities and limitations of theory transfer. The possibilities concern the similarities of the roles when viewing them as self-employed and the limitations concern the theories that are tightly coupled to the entrepreneurial process.

A new type of worker, the gig worker, is acknowledge and problematized as to what challenges mediators can face with managing them as previous research points out their differences from other workers. The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze challenges that a mediator can face when managing gig workers and also elevate the knowledge regarding gig workers on how to work with them. A semi-structured interview was conducted with four participants, three mediators of established gig firms in Sweden and one management consultant and expert in the field of gig economy. The finding indicated that there exist two challenges that mediators can face when managing gig workers: 1) The expectations of the matchmaking 2) Allowing gig workers to be independent

Tio gig-arbetare deltog i studien.

Abstract:
The object of this research is to develop a solution for band-limited channels. Backplane channels and GPON channels are investigated to apply an equalization technique. Different lengths of backplane channels are measured with different signal speeds to investigate the channel performance. Also a GPON system with different fiber lengths is designed and set up in a lab to measure the BER performance. The GPON system utilizes a Fabry-Perot laser for the most economical solution. After the circuits are fabricated, they are inserted into the system to measure the performance of the channels with equalizers. Both the backplane and the GPON system show successful channel improvement in measured eye diagrams and BER. To expedite the procedure and eventually build an adaptive system which could be inserted and self-optimizing, we found it essential to monitor the output of the equalizer. A novel analog way to achieve this goal is suggested. All the equalizers mentioned in this dissertation have one summing node to add up all the values from VGAs. This structure is very efficient, but in the event that there are too many VGAs, it draws too much current through the one node. This issue is dealt with by the design of two nine tap equalizers, which are compared to assess the difference in performance between the unbalanced structure and the balanced structure.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the X-ray properties of the entire Stanghellini et al. (1998) complete sample of GHz Peaked Spectrum galaxies with redshift lower than 1. In total 19 sources are included mainly from observations made by the European space telescope, XMM-Newton. Out of these the analysis of seven "new" observations made between 2006 and 2008 are throughout described. Data from the new observations shows consistency with already analysed data. As a new result a tentative discovery of a bi-modal structure in the X-ray to radio luminosity ratio within the sample is presented.

Abstract:
As Ethernet based networks have become the dominant choice for Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) network applications, it is also clear that Ethernet based camera integration and applications have yet to become more wide spread for system level design and integration. A significant customer base utilizes either separate video compression systems or even just stand-a-lone gopro cameras for recording purposes in an unsynchronized ways. The use of uncompressed high definition (HD) video from GigE Vision Ethernet cameras for flight test applications is a significant issue in managing the large volumes of data produced by the cameras and forwarding them to any 1000BASE-T(x) switch port without packet loss and significant delays. Of course an easy approach to overcome this issue would be to just increase the network bandwidth from 1000BASE-T(x) to 10GBASE-SR, but most FTI systems just moved to 1000BASE-T(x) in the past years and therefore changing the overall system hardware is cost prohibited. One concern has been the use of compression algorithms to reduce the required video bandwidth, with the negative side effect that the image quality reduces and end-to-end latency increases, which is not acceptable for some applications. Further, it is important that data from cameras is available to a number of different multicast consumers within the FTI network, for example workstations, recorders and telemetry systems. These video data stream also require synchronization so that they can be analyzed in post processing.

Thesis, Bordeaux, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017BORD0931.

Full text
Abstract:
The main scope of this PhD work is to characterize and reduce the timing jitter of optical pulses with sub-picosecond duration, emitted by diode-pumped ultrafsat lasers with Ytterbium doped gain media. Such laser sources have been rapidly enhanced by a high-grade and efficient industrial development, giving access to numerous novel applications, especially in the fields of applied physics and chemistry with time-resolved experiments based on interaction between light and matter. In this latter topic resides a constant need to minimize the laser pulse train timing jitter in order to access physical phenomena with extremely short timescales such as electrons recombination. Two main detection techniques have been studied to characterize the timing jitter from passively modelocked laser oscillators. The first technique is based on direct photo-detection in the microwave domain whilst the second technique makes use of the balanced optical cross-correlation. Residual timing jitter from industrial compact laser oscillators has been reduced below 5fs, close to an optical cycle period. This performance makes the laser oscillators produced by Amplitude-Systemes already suitable for challenging time-resolved pump-probe experiments, in the presence for example of a free electron laser source.Timing jitter analysis has been enhanced by studying the cross-spectrum from jitter signals generated from two balanced optical cross-correlators. This technique allowed the entire characterization of the timing jitter density spectrum from laser oscillators above the ten-kiloHertz Fourier frequency with a sub-zeptosecond noise floor. Additive timing jitter from ultrafast laser amplifiers has also been studied with optical cross-correlation and gives a global comprehension of the timing jitter from a complete high-energy ultrafast laser chain. The collected measurments will be conducive to design a more adapted and performant timing synchronization system for industrial laser sources. A better knowledge of the non-trivial jitter sources, dependent on the laser parameters, will also allow to design intrinsically low-noise new laser sources based on the Ytterbium gain media. The cross-spectrum technique developed could be of use to characterize other laser technologies and to investigate the theoretical perturbation model of ultrafast lasers with a better experimental insight

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objects of this study are the thirty-four gigues of J. S. Bach. This corpus of pieces represents one musician's encounter with the most engrossing dance genre of his time, and by coming to terms with this repertory I develop analytical perspectives with wide relevance to music of Europe in the early eighteenth century. The dissertation has a clear analytical focus but it also speaks to methodological issues of the relationship between theory and analysis, and the problem of reading a creative practice out of fixed works. Its main theoretical commitment is to middle-out perspectives on musical process. The dissertation's main themes are form, hypermeter, and schema. Its primary contribution to music theory lies in setting out an original position on the analysis of hypermeter, and advancing approaches to form and schema that are consistent with that position. "Form" and "schema" refer to compositional formulas that associate with hypermeter on the larger and smaller scales respectively, with observational windows as wide as the first half of a binary movement and as narrow as a couple of bars. Chapter 2 addresses the form of Bach's cello gigues. I arrive at a complete model of formal functions and phrase rhythm by first considering the turning points in the rhetoric of Fortspinnung. Chapter 4 addresses the chain of fifths sequence in Bach's harpsichord gigues. I analyze over fifty sequence passages, develop a typology of their contrapuntal frameworks, and consider the connections from sequence passages to subsequent events. These substantive analytical case studies flank the discussion of hypermeter. Chapter 3 includes analyses of Bach's orchestral gigue and two chamber-sonata gigues but is the most purely theoretical chapter. Its arguments are relevant to the study of meter and hypermeter across the whole "common practice" period. Since Chapters 2-4 address subsets of the corpus, a comprehensive overview is entrusted to Chapter 1, which also introduces the dissertation. Chapter 1's overview anchors the more specialized chapters in a wider reflection on the ability of compositional technique to inflect different styles, idioms, genres, and affects.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Research has identified a problem of executive authorities in Africa that operate largely free of accountability and/or balance of power, often resulting in oppression, tyranny, or other abuses of power. In response to calls for greater understanding of indigenous African leadership (Littrell, 2011), this dissertation used problem-focused ethnographic methods to investigate characteristics of Gisu/Masaaba clan elder leadership in East Africa, specifically as elders interact with executive authority. Elders are a tribal form of leadership wherein leaders are embedded in the community but lack political power. The research question asked: What are the modalities indigenous to Gisu culture, specifically from elder councils, that facilitate accountability and balance of power in African governance, and how could biblical descriptions of elders be useful in the Gisu's self-perception and construction of elder-based leadership? The study (N = 49) employed participant observation as well as directed observation and interview-based participant listening with elders, youth, and government leaders to produce rich qualitative data. After coding emergent themes and categories, thick descriptions of Gisu clan elder leadership formed a foundation for analysis. Emergent themes were first analyzed using indigenous typologies and then using analyst-constructed typologies before being interpreted to present an indigenous portrayal of traditional Gisu elders' characteristics, concerns, actions, and modalities. Research data provided support for elders' facilitating accountability through speaking directly to the leader, escalating complaints to higher authorities, and taking the case to the public; the data also offered support, to a lesser degree, for elders facilitating balance of power related to executive authority through formation of supraclan bodies such as the Inzu ya Masaaba and Elders Forum as well as through persistently utilizing the modality of elders' voice to call for reform. Drawing from the research data, the author offered suggestions for how biblical descriptions of elders could be useful in the Gisu's self-perception and construction of elder-based leadership, specifically addressing two threats to elder self-perception and construction of elder-based leadership by way of reclaiming important traditional aspects of eldership.

In a renewable energy power system inside a smart grid environment, the use of wireless technologies for remote transmitting control information to the wind turbines requires modern techniques to improve the overall generated power quality and prevent damage to the turbines and converters. In this work, a robust wireless control system for a squirrel cage induction wind turbine connected to the power grid is proposed. The system employs convolutional coding and morphological filtering jointly to enhance the generated power quality by improving the robustness of the control system to the errors caused by the radio propagation channel. The performance is investigated in terms of total harmonic distortion and overall system response to verify the power quality delivered by the wind turbine to the grid. The satisfactory results endorse the operability and advantages of the proposed wireless control system.

Bidaj, Klodjan. Thesis, Bordeaux, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016BORD0355/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Bit rates of high speed serial links (USB, SATA, PCI-express, etc.) have reached the multi-gigabits per second, and continue to increase. Two of the major electrical parameters used to characterize SerDes Integrated Circuit performance are the transmitted jitter at a given bit error rate (BER) and the receiver capacity to track jitter at a given BER.Modeling the phase noise of the different SerDes components, extracting the time jitter and decomposing it, would help designers to achieve desired Figure of Merit (FoM) for future SerDes versions. Generating white and colored noise synthetic jitter patterns would allow to better analyze the effect of jitter in a system for design verification. The phase locked loop (PLL) is one of the contributors of clock random and periodic jitter inside the system. This thesis presents a method for modeling the PLL with phase noise injection and estimating the time domain jitter. A time domain model including PLL loop nonlinearities is created in order to estimate jitter. A novel method for generating Gaussian distribution synthetic jitter patterns from colored noise profiles is also proposed. The Standard Organizations specify random and deterministic jitter budgets. In order to decompose the PLL output jitter (or the generated jitter from the proposed method), a new technique for jitter analysis and decomposition is proposed. Modeling simulation results correlate well with measurements and this technique will help designers to properly identify and quantify the sources of deterministic jitter and their impact on the SerDes system. We have developed a method, for specifying PLLs in terms of Phase Noise. This method works for any standard (USB, SATA, PCIe, …), and defines Phase noise profiles of the different parts of the PLL, in order to be sure that the standard requirements are satisfied in terms of Jitter

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this study was to understand how platform providers can develop their offerings and gig platforms depending on the targeted professional freelancers, henceforth referred to just as freelancers. To fulfil the purpose, three research questions (RQ) were developed: RQ1. How do freelancers’ level of experience influence what is important for their work life? RQ2. How do freelancers’ level of experience influence what they want help with from a gig platform? RQ3. How can platform providers create a satisfying gig platform?  Method - A qualitative, explorative approach was used and both freelancers and platform providers in Sweden were interviewed. In total were 23 interviews conducted in three different phases and the data collected was then analysed through two thematic analysis. Findings - The finding showed that new and experienced freelancers found similar things as important for their work life; monetary compensation, freedom, feeling authentic, self-development, social connection, decreasing uncertainty, relationship with the requesting organization (RO), necessary competence and finding new gigs. Experienced freelancers also found it important to scale up their freelancing career. Even though both groups almost found the same categories of aspects important, but their view on them differed. Experienced freelancers had higher expectations and had already accomplished most of them, while the new ones wished to accomplish it in the future. The new freelancers therefore showed a greater interest in gig platforms and wanted more help from platform providers. What new and experienced freelancers wanted help with, and how platform providers can accomplish it, was illustrated and a framework for strategic aspects which platform providers should consider in order to create a satisfying gig platform was developed.  Theoretical and Practical Contribution - The study contributed to the previous literature by highlighting that different groups of freelancers, new and experienced ones, have different views and expectations on things they find important, as well as what they want help with. Additionally, guidance for platform providers on how to create a satisfying gig platform was provided. Limitation and Future Research - This study was limited to Sweden, and it could be of interest to investigate if there are similarities or differences among different countries. It could also be interesting to investigate if the gender of the freelancers’ niche influences their needs.

Abstract:
The Gig-Economy is an alternative way of describing a world where long-term employees turn into short-term independent contractors in charge of their own careers. The cross-sectional half of the current study will gather data from multiple generations of professionals and emerging professionals that assesses their career adaptabilities, gender, marital status, presence of children, and preference for the Gig Economy. Previous research has not analyzed these factors in combination with each other. The Millennial participants from the cross-sectional portion of the study will be tested once every five years as they progress through their careers on these same measures. Millennials will have more career adapt abilities than other generations, and will prefer the Gig Economy more than other generations. However, females will prefer the Gig Economy more than men, as it provides for more flexibility. Those who are married and especially those with children will prefer the Gig Economy more than those who are unmarried or without children. The information from the current study will be helpful to anyone currently working in or about to start working. It will allow career counselors information with which to best guide Millennials and all those struggling to find their way in the Gig Economy.

Steele, Mellissa. "Leveraging independent workers in the knowledge-based gig economy through supportive Human Resource Management practices." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/79660.

Full text
Abstract:
The gig economy represents a new work arrangement which is characterised by on-demand, increasingly digitally-enabled, short-term relationships with an organisation. Due to the seemingly detached nature of this work, perceptions of organisation support may be low, which may present a challenge to organisations in terms of obtaining the full business value from the gig workforce, particularly in the knowledge-based context. Organisations will be required to reconsider the manner in which they engage with talent in the gig economy, in order to leverage them effectively towards the achievement of business objectives. The aim of this research therefore was to determine the supportive Human Resource Management (HRM) practices to be implemented by organisations in order to better leverage the knowledge-based gig economy. Furthermore, the research sought to understand how these HRM practices are influenced by the complexity of the task, as well as the role of digital labour platforms in supporting in the provision of HRM practices, given their increasingly prominent role within the gig economy. A qualitative, exploratory research methodology was used to gain insight into the specific HRM practices required for knowledge-based gig workers, which would lead to positive perceptions of organisational support. The study consisted of 16 semi-structured, in depth interviews with a range of independent workers within the knowledge-based gig economy. The supportive HRM practices were identified as engagement support, clear structures and processes, remuneration and rewards, autonomy and flexibility, fairly applied practices, learning and development, as well as performance feedback. To assist organisations in practically implementing these practices, specific actions were included relating to each. The study also provided insight on the preferred supportive HRM practices based on the complexity of the task, and recommendations on the role of digital labour platforms in the provision of HRM support to gig workers within an ecosystem with organisations.

Campanello, Kimberly. "Writing the sheela-na-gig : semiotic complexity, ekphrasis, and poetic persona in the poetry collection 'Strange Country'." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2018. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/25958/.

Full text
Abstract:
This mixed-mode PhD comprises an ekphrastic poetry collection, Strange Country, and a critical component that accounts for my research and writing processes and articulates my poetics of ekphrasis as practised in the collection. Strange Country focuses on sheela-na-gigs, stone carvings of naked female figures that prominently depict the vulva, which are found on medieval churches, castles, wells, and town walls in Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. Historians and archaeologists, as well as poets, have suggested that they were/are variously meant to: act as warnings against lust and sin; ward off evil; aid in conception and childbirth; symbolize female power and sexuality; demonstrate the power of nature to give and take life; signify sovereignty over land and nation; or facilitate passage from one state to another. However, their meaning, dating, and origins are impossible to determine definitively. In contrast to these approaches that decide the sheela-na-gigs' meaning, I aimed to poetically inhabit their semiotic complexity in a full-length collection. This aspiration arose from my research and writing process, which included reading the literature on sheela-na-gigs, visiting over sixty of them, and reviewing from a practitioner's perspective literary criticism on ekphrasis as well as existing poems on sheela-na-gigs by other poets. As I strove for this semiotic complexity in my poems, I deployed a range of poetic techniques. On the one hand, I wrote lyric and narrative associative poems that have a clearly defined, autobiographical poetic persona using a technique I call 'associative ekphrasis'. On the other hand, I also chose to forgo consistent use of this speaker and came to write found and visual poems derived from an archive I compiled of documents on sheela-na-gigs (dating from the 19th century to the present). Finally, I wrote a long poem that uses a hybrid formal strategy. The critical commentary traces my creative decision-making process with a particular focus on the position and function of the poetic 'I'. In the commentary, I use Roland Barthes's notion of punctum and Federico García Lorca's duende to describe my experience of the carvings and my desire to emphasize their inexplicable impact and enigma in my poems. In order to analyze the sheela poems by other poets and to account for my own writing practice, I use literary terminologies and debates relating to ekphrasis, and I employ perspectives on the poetic 'I' from the poetics of lyric 'deep image' and 'postmodern witness' poetry as articulated by Robert Bly, Alicia Ostriker, and Tony Hoagland alongside the 'uncreative' poetics of Kenneth Goldsmith and Craig Dworkin. In addition to contributing a collection of poems to the body of creative responses to sheela-na-gigs, this collection and critical commentary complicate the argument that poems written in a lyric mode are necessarily more expressive, 'creative', or faithful to the ekphrastic object than those written 'uncreatively' using found text and ultimately demonstrate the productive possibilities of an non-polarized approach to these debates.

Kälvegren, Christian, and Anna Wong. "Leveraging the Pros of the Gig Economy : How IT departments in manufacturing companies meet their consultant needs."

Full text
Abstract:
The gig economy can be described as a temporary work-environment where an independent workforce uses platforms to find and draw income from work. In 2016, 20-30% of US and Europe’s population took part in some kind of independent work, and the amount of selfemployed in Sweden is growing. However, at what rate it grows differs depending on how these workers are defined. Within the gig economy, the fastest growing areas of work are in knowledge intensive- and creative environments such as consulting. Using gig consultants provides companies access to top talent within IT, which is required in many businesses and industries where digitalisation is disrupting their ways of working. One of these industries is manufacturing, where e.g. servitisation and Industry 4.0 makes the companies more digital and connected. The purpose of this thesis was to understand how manufacturing companies handle their external talent management and demand for consultant hires within IT, both now and in the future as the amount of gig consultants increases. This was done by conducting interviews with representatives from five Swedish manufacturing companies within automotive and machinery. The interviewees had different roles, but were or had been responsible for hiring consultants within IT. The empirics gained from the interviews were combined with theory, mainly on talent management and managing external talent. The main findings from the study were that in most cases, the companies do not choose between a consultant and a gig consultant, they rather look for the right competence. Gig consultants are however seen as more of experts and can specifically be hired when frontedge or niched competence is needed. On the other hand, consultants can be used when a complete solution has to be delivered as the capacity of a consultancy is higher. To ensure successful consultant hires, the IT departments work with preferred suppliers with whom they have framework agreements to access and hire talent. These suppliers include both consultancies and brokers, from where they get both regular consultants and gig consultants. In general, what defines a successful hire of a consultant is that he or she is sufficiently competent and able to quickly adapt to the company. Additionally, a successful hire is when the project or assignment is completed on time with good result. The main advantages with hiring gig consultants are that acquiring competence can be made easier and more flexible, they can also access more niched competencies. The main disadvantage is that it is unclear who takes responsibility if a gig consultant cannot deliver as they are not part of a firm who can send a replacement. However, some brokers seem to replace the gig consultant.
