Abstract:

Abstract:
Research on measuring support for Latino issues in Congress has found that party affiliation is the primary influence on the level of support. The research also demonstrates that under certain scenarios, Latino representatives do provide more substantive Latino representation than do non-Latino representatives. The purpose of this project is to re-evaluate these earlier findings using more recent data in a changed political context. In addition, the project will examine the effects that different types of Democrats have on Latino representation. The findings suggest that when it comes to support for Latino issues, there are differences between the parties, and within the Democratic Party. An unexpected source of Latino representation, members of the Congressional Black Caucus, is also revealed in the findings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The U antigen (MNS5) is one of 49 antigens belonging to the MNS blood group system (ISBT002) carried on glycophorins A (GPA) and B (GPB). U is present on the red blood cells in almost all Europeans and Asians but absent in approximately 1.0% of Black Africans. U negativity coincides with negativity for S (MNS3) and s (MNS4) on GPB, thus be called S–s–U–, and is thought to arise from homozygous deletion of GYPB. Little is known about the molecular background of these deletions. Bioinformatic analysis of the 1000 Genomes Project data revealed several candidate regions with apparent deletions in GYPB. Highly specific Gap-PCRs, only resulting in positive amplification from DNAs with deletions present, allowed for the exact genetic localization of 3 different breakpoints; 110.24- and 103.26-kb deletions were proven to be the most frequent in Black Americans and Africans. Among 157 CEPH DNAs, deletions in 6 out of 8 African ethnicities were present. Allele frequencies of the deletions within African ethnicities varied greatly and reached a cumulative 23.3% among the Mbuti Pygmy people from the Congo. Similar observations were made for U+var alleles, known to cause strongly reduced GPB expression. The 110- and 103-kb deletional GYPB haplotypes were found to represent the most prevalent hereditary factors causative of the MNS blood group phenotype S–s–U–. Respective GYPB deletions are now accessible by molecular detection of homo- and hemizygous transmission.

Abstract:
Large sites with a low contamination of metall(oid)s were in the past a problem for remediation measures – the “traditional” processes were too expensive for an application on such expanded areas. Phytoremediation can be an alternative for such low contamination problems. In Germany, a research project is performed on this subject, in cooperation of the University of Jena and the TU Dresden. The field site is a former U mining area. Until 1991, a low grade U ore dump for sulfuric acid leaching was located on this site. After the close-down of the U mining in East Germany in 1991, the dump material was removed. Now, a phytoremediation test field is constructed on top of this site for the capture of the remained contaminants coming up by capillary forces. The paper pictures the phytoremediation in general, the research project and gives some first preliminary results.

Abstract:
Summary Background. Elevated von Willebrand factor (vWF) is a risk factor in the development of acute myocardial infarction. The importance of vWF and factor VIII :C in the pathogenesis of cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is poorly defined. Methods and results. We studied 208 cases of stroke whose pathological type was defined by cranial computed tomography. Cerebral infarcts were grouped according to the Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project (OCSP) clinical classification. The results in patients were compared with 184 healthy reference subjects. In patients, vWF and FVIII: C levels were determined initially and after three months. Patients were followed prospectively for six months or until death.Levels of vWF and FVIII :C were elevated initially (1.86 IU/ml and 2.20 U/ml respectively) and after 3 months (1.51 IU/ml and 1.90 U/ml) compared with a healthy reference population (1.26 IU/ml and 1.49 U/ml p = 0.0001). In the initial sample, vWF was associated with age (p = 0.01). FVIII: C was related to age (p = 0.04), gender (p = 0.007 higher for females) and a history of diabetes mellitus (2.56 U/ml vs. 2.16 U/ml in non-diabetics, p = 0.008).Initial vWF levels were higher in subjects with large vessel disease (TACI/PACI) group compared with the small vessel disease (LACI) group [2.12 IU/ml, (n = 112) vs. 1.48 IU/ml (n = 59) respectively, p = 0.0001] and similarly in initial FVIII :C levels (2.43 U/ml vs. 1.87 U/ml, p = 0.0001).Analysis of six-month case fatality, vWF levels were associated with risk of death [p = 0.01, OR 1.73 (1.12,2.66) for an increase of 1 U/ml], even after allowing for stroke type. Conclusion. The relationship of vWF with stroke mortality has not previously been described. Although we have not demonstrated a causal role for vWF in the pathogenesis of CVD, elevated circulating levels of vWF may be associated with increased risk of death following stroke. A prospective study would be required to establish whether vWF is predictive for the development of CVD.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In June of 2000, U. S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO) San Juan conducted the Annual Abandoned Vessel Inventory and noticed an abandoned vessel grounded on a beach in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Personal investigation revealed that the vessel held approximately 5,000 gallons of waste oil in the engine room, posing a pollution threat to the local public. In a thorough attempt to identify the owner, the MSO used the knowledge of local fishermen, the marine police and Department of Natural Resource. When the owner could not be identified, the Captain of the Port decided to use the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to remove the threat of an oil discharge. Upon discovering that five marine batteries and filters had been hidden on board the vessel, it was determined that it was likely being used as a waste dumpsite. If it was indeed a dumpsite, the Coast Guard would then take control of the vessel, initiate salvage operations, and remove it from its location. Local contractors were hired in the first successful oil removal attempt, lasting two days. In April of 2001, the re-assessment was conducted and an additional 5,000 gallons of waste oil was again discovered on the vessel, confirming the belief that it was a dumpsite. A more in depth assessment was conducted, and another 10,000 gallons of fuel oil was discovered in the wing tanks. The second project commenced with a local environmental contractor hired to remove the 15,000 gallons of oil. Then a salvage contractor was hired to mechanically cut the vessel into scrap for disposal. During this time over 300 lbs. of commercial grade C-4 explosives and detonation cord were discovered in a hidden compartment in the aft end of the vessel. The total cost to the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund was approximately $700,000.00 and over 2,000 man-hours were spent to complete the project. This three month long abandoned vessel removal is considered an important success for several reasons. Not only did the Coast Guard remove a major pollution threat from the environment, but the municipality has also renovated the beachfront area and installed a boardwalk for public access.

AbstractThe configuration of the second phase of the Brazilian Decimetric Array (BDA), installed at Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil (Longitude 45° 0′ 20″ W and Latitude 22° 41′ 19″ S), is a T-shaped array where 21 antennas are being added to existing 5 antennas of the first phase. In the third phase, in each arm of the T array, four more antennas will be added and baselines will be increased to 2.5 × 1.25 km in east-west and south directions, respectively. The antennas will be equally spaced at the distances of 250 meters from the central antenna of the T-array. Also, the frequency range will be increased to 1.2–1.7, 2.8 and 5.6 GHz. The Second phase of the BDA should be operational by the middle of 2010 and will operate in the frequency range of (1.2–1.7) GHz for solar and non solar observations. Here, we present the characteristics of the second phase of the BDA project, details of the array configuration, the u-v coverage, the synthesized beam obtained for the proposed configuration.

Abstract:
Large numbers of perennial rivers flowing through steep gradient has made Nepal an ideal place for hydropower development. Development of hydropower project in most economical way possible is the first prerequisite to get maximum benefit from harnessing water resources. The maximum benefit can be achieved only through optimal design of the project. Each project component must be designed considering the required level of factor of safety, performance standards of each component and economy. On this backdrop, this paper intends to optimize the location of cutoffs in headworks to get maximum benefits from use of it in terms of safety and economy.Improper placement of cutoff not only reduces the factor of safety against piping but also curtails the project benefits due to excessive seepage flow. Piping (internal erosion of soil particles under structure) is associated with high exit gradient. It threatens the structural stability and ultimately leads to failure of structure while as excessive seepage flow limits the availability of flow for power generation and reduces the project benefits. So, the optimal design of headworks is an attempt to identify the best location of cutoff to control seepage flow and reduce exit gradient. Five different cases representing different location of cutoff were analyzed and their roles in controlling seepage flow and reducing exit gradient was evaluated to optimize the cutoff location. 2D Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for the seepage analysis. The analysis showed that cutoffs are essential to control seepage flow when dam/weir is founded in pervious soil. However, the best location to place cutoff must be adroitly identified to reap maximum benefit from use of cutoff. The analysis reveals that the role of central cutoff in controlling seepage flow and reducing exit gradient is very limited. Likewise, the u/s cutoff has minimum effect in reducing exit gradient but the d/s cutoff seemed very effective in reducing exit gradient resulting increased factor of safety against piping. Hence, this paper concludes that the d/s end is the optimal location to place cutoff to improve safety and economy of the project. In addition, the use of both u/s and d/s cutoffs extend positive roles both in controlling seepage flow and reducing exit gradient. However, in author’s opinion the construction cost of two cutoffs must be compared with benefit added by use of two cutoffs over use of single d/s cutoff. Refracting Hanafi?s first publication, Les méthodes d‘exégèse, through notions and concepts developed in Translation Studies will demonstrate the boldness of Hanafi?s innovations. SummaryTo evaluate the effect of standard chemotherapeutic regimens on the hemostatic profile of patients with breast and lung carcinoma; and to evaluate the effect of a single dose of a low molecular weight (LMW) heparin, dalteparin sodium, administered prior to the chemotherapy on markers of hemostatic activation.11 patients with breast cancer and 10 patients with lung cancer receiving systemic chemotherapy were studied. 10 breast cancer patients and 9 lung cancer patients completed at least 1 cycle of treatment and had all hemostatic studies. Patients had a complete hemostatic and prothrombotic profile performed at study initiation. Markers of hemostatic activation consisting of immunoassays for thrombin-antithrombin (TAT) complex and D-dimer were measured in plasma samples obtained prior to chemotherapy and at 1, 24 and 48 h after treatment. A 2500 U dose of dalteparin was given prior to the 2nd cycle of chemotherapy; 5000 U of dalteparin was given prior to the 4th treatment cycle.Chemotherapy resulted in statistically significant increases in TAT and D-dimer for the 1, 24 and 48 h plasma samples in both the breast and lung cancer patients for all cycles of chemotherapy given without LMW heparin. There were statistically significant increases in basal thrombin generation over the 4 cycles of treatment which was unrelated to active cancer. Both pretreatment doses of dalteparin effectively prevented increases in the markers of hemostatic activation. However, in the lung cancer patients, who had significantly increased basal thrombin generation, the 5000 U dose dalteparin was more effective.Chemotherapy results in significant hemostatic activation in patients with breast and lung cancer. The effect of treatment appears to be cumulative. A single dose of LMW heparin administered prior to therapy can suppress hemostatic activation. This project was funded by a grant from the Pharmacia corporation

Abstract:
Due to the growing demand for civil infrastructure, financial innovations are required to close the financing gap. However, a lack of theories has inhibited a complete understanding and, thus, creation and diffusion of financial innovation. A lack of theory about financial innovations in infrastructure is mainly due to the absence of a framework to conceptualize these innovations. A typology that enables comparison of financial systems and, hence, provide a framework to conceptualize financial innovations is missing in the existing literature. This paper defines innovation in the context of financing, funding and delivery of infrastructure projects and proposes a new typology for conceptualization of the loci and types of financial innovations in infrastructure. The loci of innovations are in risk mitigation, regulation, cash flow, contract, organizational, and capital sub-systems. Types of innovations are classified as either integrated or modular and either sustaining or disruptive. The typology was tested by mapping seven innovations created by the U. S. Federal Highway Administration and diffused into 232 transportation projects between 1994 and 2002. Qualitative comparative analysis was then used to evaluate the diffusion trends of financial innovations in the case studies and to demonstrate the capability of the proposed typology for facilitating theory building in the area of infrastructure financial innovations.

This article gives meaning to innovating promising practices in high poverty rural contexts, as experienced by the Rural Math Excel Partnership (RMEP). The project sought to develop a model of shared school-family-community responsibility to support student success in foundational math courses as preparation for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health (STEM-H) careers. RMEP was one of the two rural development grant awards in the 2012 federal fiscal year, the first year for awards in the rural priority area of the U. S. Department of Education’s Investing in Innovation (i3) program. High poverty rural areas may have major implications for fidelity of implementation and measurement of intended impacts that raise important questions about project organizational structures, capacities and evaluation needs. If significant external funding and a partnership approach are key catalysts for innovating solutions to educational challenges, the answers to 10 questions of readiness could have major implications for project success.

Abstract:
Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) could be of clinical relevance in modern cartilage regeneration. In a miniature pig model correlation of measurements and histologic scores have never been used before. The data analysis was part of an animal project that investigated the effects of seeding a chondrogenic and osteogenic scaffold with a bone-marrow-derived cell concentrate and reports the histological and mechanical properties. We created 20 osteochondral defects in the femoral condyles of 10 miniature pigs. The defects were left empty (E), filled with the grafted cylinder upside down (U), or with a combined scaffold (S) containing a spongy bone cylinder covered with a collagen membrane. In the fourth group, the same scaffolds were implanted but seeded with a stem cell concentrate (S+BMCC). The animals were euthanized after 3 months, and histologic and spectrometric analyses were performed. NIRS measurements were significantly higher in the central area of the defects of group S+BMCC compared to the central area of the defects of group U. In all groups, a correlation between NIRS and the histologic scores could be demonstrated though on different levels. In the central area, a good NIRS measurement correlates with low (good) histologic scores. In group E and group S, this negative correlation was significant (p=0.01). For the first time, NIRS was successfully used to evaluate osteochondral constructs in a miniature pig model.

Abstract:
The BIBFRAME model is introduced; its origins are discussed. The author explains why Russian cataloguers have become interested in this LOC’ project. The developers argue that BIBFRAME is to initiate bibliographic standards transformation into the associated data model of a higher level and will make bibliographic information more useful for within and outside of bibliographic community. The structure comprises the model (structures information on three main abstraction levels: work, expression, item), glossary, and tools. The differences between BIBFRAME and MARC are revealed. BIBFRAME development stages, step-to-step implementation program are characterized. BIBFRAME and RDA tools are compared. Expert opinions on BIBFRAME concept and the prospects of its implementation in the global library practice are reviewed. The author emphasizes that BIBFRAME makes a formal access point for the library community to enter the larger data network where links between objects are of primary importance. The author also discusses terminology problems. She also voices her hope that we will not have to catch up with the international library community and will be represented on the Semantic Web, too.

Abstract:
This December marks the end of fieldwork for The Changing Relations Project, a two-year ethnographic research project funded by the Ford Foundation involving six communities across the United States. The project's goal is to understand the dynamics of cooperation between newly arrived refugees and the other residents of U. S. communities. Garden City, Kansas, population about 23,000, is one of six sites and the only relatively rural community included in the study. For members of the Garden City Research Team, "understanding changing relations" means understanding new immigrants and established, resident Hispanics, Anglos, and Southeast Asians. The project involves a team of six anthropologists and a cultural geographer. Our teamwork had to be managed and coordinated over hundreds of miles for several years, and because of this, we have found that anthropological teamwork and the personal microcomputer are made for each other. I want to suggest in this article that anthropological practice and the personal computer may together, through their interplay, be hastening the change from "lone ranger" ethnography to Managed Anthropological Teamwork (MAT).

This article discusses how Harbin Boiler Co. Ltd (HBC) has incorporated the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code to ensure that the research, manufacturing, and servicing behind its products are in line with the international standard. HBC got to know ASME Codes in the early 1980s. In 1987, HBC became the first manufacturer of utility boilers in China to obtain ASME Authorization Certificates and Code stamps S (power boilers), U (pressure vessels), and Ш (alternative rules for pressure vessels). HBC obtained the National Board Authorization Certificate and Code stamp R (repair and alteration of boilers) in 1996. In 2004, HBC completed manufacturing the first product project with the U stamp – 24 oil tanks and gas tanks for the Three Gorges Zuoan Power Plant. During the course of obtaining ASME certificates and Code stamps, HBC also enhanced its design capability and manufacturing level, promoted its technology and management levels, further improved its quality and management system, and greatly strengthened its comprehensive competitiveness in the market.

Abstract:
The goal was to examine demographic differences between former communist regions and other regions of the EU. Besides providing a regional overview of EU?s demographic differences, we question whether the subnational approach offers any new insights into the East-West divide. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1,155 EU?s NUTS3 regions from 2014. These regions are grouped in two groups: regions that were part of a com-munist country, and other regions. Mortality, fertility and age structure indicators were tested between the two groups of regions. GDP/c was used to control for differences in economic development by segmenting the regions into tree brackets: low, medium, and high. The differences were then tested for each indicator. Regional variation within countries for each indicator was also assessed. The gaps exist at regional level and are the widest with mortality and fertility schedule, regardless of GDP/c. Former communist regions on average tend to be slightly younger. Analysis of regional variation showed that subnational approach was warranted when studying East-West demographic disparities, especially when it comes to fertility schedule. Rofes goes on to present some promising initiatives that are designed to change the status quo: Project 10 in Los Angeles and the Harvey Milk School in New York City. He concludes by proposing needed changes in U. S. schools if they are to become truly accessible to gay and lesbian youth.

Natura 2000 sites and fisheries in German offshore waters.–ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 155–169. The principal objective of sites selected as part of Natura 2000 is to achieve or maintain a favourable conservation status of habitats and species named in the EU Birds and Habitats directives. In the German exclusive economic zone, the habitat types protected by this legislation are sandbanks and reefs; protected species include marine mammals, seabirds, and specific migratory fish species. The ICES project Environmentally Sound Fishery Management in Protected Areas (EMPAS) aims to answer two questions: (i) To what extent do specific fishing activities significantly threaten attainment of the conservation objectives of the Natura 2000 sites? (ii) What management measures would reduce these conflicts and how effective would they be at helping to ensure the favourable condition of these sites? Assessments of fishing impacts on Natura 2000 sites require basic data on the conservation status of individual habitats and species, as well as data for fine-scale distributions of ongoing fishing activities. This paper describes and discusses the process used by the EMPAS project in developing fishery-management plans for each Natura 2000 site in German offshore waters.

Abstract:
The deep-learning method has been successfully applied to many geophysical problems to extract features from seismic big data. However, some applications may not have sufficient available data to directly train a generalized neural network. We have applied data augmentation on a significantly small number of samples to train a generalized neural network for microseismic event detection and phase picking, which could be used in different project settings and areas. We use the U-Net architecture consisting of 2D convolutional layers to create the prediction function, and we map the waveforms recorded by using multiple receivers to the P/S arrival time labels; thus, the neural network can learn the P/S moveout features from multiple receivers. The training set is generated by simulating various realizations of the data based on 10 original samples from the beginning of a hydraulic fracturing stage. The trained neural network is then used to detect the events and pick the P/S phases from the continuous data for different stages and projects. A grid search from a precalculated traveltime table is performed to determine the event location after an event is detected. We build a real-time event detection and location workflow without human intervention by combining the neural network and grid search method, and we apply the workflow to a different stage from the training events and a completely independent project that the neural network has not encountered. The results indicate that microseismic events are successfully detected and located, and the picking performance of the neural network is superior to that of a traditional autoregression picker.

Abstract:
Aims: There are relatively few documented teen tobacco use cessation efforts outside the United States (U. S.). Project EX is an evidence-based program that consists of eight sessions, as a school-based clinic tobacco cessation-only version and a classroom-based prevention and cessation version. This paper provides a ‘snapshot’ of progress on international translation of Project EX pilot study work in eight countries that have been approached thus far. The program was implemented in Wuhan, China; Israel and partners; Bashkortostan, Russia; and Elche, Spain. Implementation is planned for Vienna, Austria; Mumbai, India; and Bangkok, Thailand. This work will lead eventually to a greater understanding regarding preference for type of programming (e. g., clinic versus classroom modality), challenges in recruitment and retention, program receptivity, and short-term (approximately 3-month post-program) quit rates. Protocol and Interim Results of International Translation of Project EX: Convenience samples are being recruited based on previous contacts with each location. A protocol was sent to each location, proposing a controlled design, in which subjects enter cessation groups or become a wait-list control, with an immediate pretest, posttest, and 3-month follow-up. Language translation of program materials was completed in seven of the eight locations. Several variations in design and implementation were demanded though. For example, youth fear of reporting tobacco publicly mandated to researchers that the prevention/cessation classroom version be implemented in some locations (Israel and partners, and India). Program effects are suggested across countries. Conclusions: Ongoing partnerships with parties actively involved in tobacco control facilitate pilot testing of teen tobacco use cessation programming. The Project EX curriculum appears quite translatable, though having flexibility in implementation modality eased being able to pilot test the program. Research on this cognitive-behavioral, motivation enhancement approach continues.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Though widely used, current scar assessment scales are inaccurate and highly subjective, further complicating the already difficult task of determining the optimal management of burn patients. Additional disadvantages of these tools include the need for direct examination by an experienced clinician and the inability to retrospectively review them. The lack of an accurate assessment tool inevitably impairs any research examining novel therapeutic strategies designed to improve burn scar outcomes by introducing observer bias at every step. Common examples of these tools include the Vancouver Scar Scale and Visual analog scale. New imaging and processing technologies have the potential of bringing accuracy, reproducibility, and accessibility to burn scar assessments. With these goals in mind, our team developed a novel scoring system and a classification model based on Machine Learning algorithms and analyzed 87 pictures to obtain scores on Inflammation (I), Scar (S), Uniformity (U), and Pigmentation (P). Methods All algorithms were trained using both the sub-acute and the long-term phase pictures. The classification model is based on supervised learning, which requires many examples of annotated pictures and corresponding scar scores. The model used a Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) algorithm and visual features of the scars and the natural skin. To train and evaluate this model, four burn care providers individually annotated 186 pictures of skin grafts and later formed a committee to annotate by consensus a subset of representative pictures. While the individual predictions were used as an accuracy baseline, the consensus annotation was the true score and used to train the model. Results The model predictions were more accurate in scores mainly based on color (I and P), rather than texture (S and U), as shown by the micro-averaged Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.86, 0.61, 0.51, and 0.80 for I, S, U, and P, respectively (Figure 1). The model accuracy was higher than the human baseline for the I (F1 of 0.60 vs. 0.59±0.13, respectively) and P scores (0.54 vs. 0.51±0.09), but lower in the S (0.30 vs. 0.63±0.22) and U scores (0.62 vs. 0.86±0.19). Conclusions Our findings are encouraging and suggest that further improvement of the accuracy of the algorithm could be achieved on the second phase of our assessment development project by increasing the number of pictures it learns from and adding more visual features related to skin texture. Applicability of Research to Practice Our study provides an accurate and reproducible evaluation of burn scars, that leads to newer therapeutic strategies employed by specialized burn care facilities.

ABSTRACT. The Aerogeophysical Project Serra do Mar Sul compiled gamma-ray data in the 70’s, for a large basement area (50,000 km2) in Paraná state, southernBrazil. The cps data were corrected in 1997 by BARMP, Brazil Airborne Radiometric Mapping Project, and are available now as TC (eU), K (%), eTh and eU (in ppm). Thedata for the two large intrusions in the region, the Cunhaporanga Granitic Complex (CGC) and Trˆes C´orregos Granitic Complex (TCGC) were used to generate maps forK, eTh, eU, total counts, and several derived parameters: eTh/K, eU/K, eU/eTh, F. Contrasts between the two complexes are explained as a result of outcrop pattern andweathering (CGC more weathered than TCGC) and differences in overall Th content (eastern TCGC domains richer in the element), but a more uniform U distribution. The differences are enhanced in the eTh/K map (TCGC with lower ratios). The late alaskitic Serra do Carambe´ı intrusion in the CGC shows the highest Th and U values.Gamma-ray patterns in granites subjected to strong subtropical alterations, with heavy seasonal rains, are more difficult to interpret, considering the possibility of strongleaching of K by weathering, and also supergene mobility of U, factors that are absent, or less important, in areas with drier climates. The gamma-ray patterns of thethree elements are influenced by their original distribution in the granites, but can be drastically changed by late hydrothermal alteration and weathering. Keywords: granitic complexes, gamma-ray spectrometric maps, BARMP.

Abstract:
Second-by-second GPS trajectories, called trip traces, of vehicles moving along an arterial provide the highest fidelity measure of corridor operations. However, large samples of such contiguous trajectories are not always possible because of varying techniques to reset probe vehicle IDs for data privacy, varying probe data penetration rates, and varying vehicle routing. This paper analyzes changes in segment travel time using the Mann–Whitney U test and proposes a method for creating a composite travel time metric using trip trace data. These techniques were applied to a four-corridor signal improvement and upgrade project in southeastern Salt Lake County. The study found that on average three out of the four corridors decreased in composite median travel time, by 32 s, 16 s, and 14 s. Interquartile range (IQR) was used to assess travel time reliability and the IQR travel time reduced (improved) on average by 33 s, 23 s, 18 s, and 1 s. In addition, a rank-sums method for statistically comparing the two composite travel time distributions is applied to the results. The four corridors had a total of 48 links and were evaluated during five time-of-day periods. Out of the 240 link-periods, the rank-sums analysis method found that overall, 68 link-periods improved and 13 link-periods slowed, at a 95% significance level. The annualized user benefit from the improvements was estimated at $2.2 million for the four corridors.

Abstract:
The European Commission has identified the building industry as one of the key sectors to achieve its 2020 strategy to create conditions for smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth. In this frame, the aim of Horizon 2020′s Eensulate project is the development of innovative lightweight and highly insulating energy efficient unitized building façades, suitable for both new and existing buildings. The Eensulate façade module integrates two components developed within the project: Vacuum Insulated Glass (VIG) for architectural purposes, with a U-value of 0.3 W/sqm∙K; a highly insulating foam for automated manufacturing and insulation for the spandrel part. This article presents the Eensulate façade system design simulations and achievements related to VIG integration to solve issues that emerged by the utilization of its innovative components (sealant thermal bridge and getter strips). VIG design and testing have gradually changed the façade module and consequently, façade components have been progressively designed to achieve the expected target of 0.641 W/sqm∙K for thermal transmittance. The results demonstrate that the target can be achieved by aluminum profiles, Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) thermal bridge, and additional insulating components, obtaining a new product for unitized façades able to reduce energy consumption in buildings with large glass surfaces.

Abstract:
This project was aimed at identifying strategies for improving current U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) procedures for investigating, reporting, and analyzing fatigue contributions to marine casualties. The focus was on evaluating the contribution of fatigue in vessel and personnel injury casualties. A total of 397 casualties were investigated. Fatigue contributed to 16 percent of the critical vessel casualties and 33 percent of the personnel injury casualties. These estimates were substantially greater than the ones currently available from the USCG Marine Investigations Module (MINMOD) database. Analyses identified three potential indicators of fatigue: (1) the number of fatigue symptoms reported by mariners, (2) the number of hours worked in the 24 hours prior to a casualty; and (3) the number of hours slept in those 24 hours. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using simple procedures to obtain meaningful data on the contribution of fatigue in transportation accidents.

Abstract:
The expansion of urban underpass has become the mainstream of development to cope with urban congestion, and the effect on adjacent existing structures during enlarging construction is also an important issue in the construction process. In order to better understand the influence of tunneling on adjacent structures, the pedestrian underpass expanding project above-crossing Xi’an Metro Line 1 was investigated. The aim was to analyze the deformation curves characteristics of adjacent structures by field observation of ground settlement, heave of existing tunnels, and settlement of piles. The results show that the ground settlement curve in the vertical direction of the underpass is similar to the shape of V, and the maximum settlement appearing in the center line of underpass is 18.7 mm. Due to the effect of existing tunnels on the ground deformation, the settlement curve in the parallel direction of the underpass is similar to the shape of M. Above-crossing tunneling would cause the existing tunnels to heave, and the heave mainly occurs in the range of −6 m to 12 m between the pedestrian tunnel face and the center line of each tunnel. The heave curve is similar to the shape of inverted U. The settlement of piles is linear with its axial stress and significantly affected by its location. The settlement curve of piles is similar to the shape of S in two dimensions. On the basis of deformation curves, this paper presents some equations to describe the shape of V, M, inverted U, and S, respectively, by the inverted Gaussian distribution curve, superimposed Gaussian distribution curve, Gaussian distribution curve, and arctangent function.

Abstract:
The subject of the research is the beginning of the design work and professional engagement of architect Milosav Miša Mitić in the 1960s. Until now, this period of Mitić's design practice and construction activity has not been the subject of any scientific research, and it has still not been assessed in architectural historiography. The aims of the paper are to shed light on the lesser-known facts about Mitić's work at the beginning of his professional career, to determine the basic characteristics of his practice and to critically re-examine his contribution to the overall picture of Serbian architecture in the second half of the twentieth century. The scientific analysis covers significant unrealized and accomplished architectural achievements, both independently in the project studio Atrium (1956-1959), and jointly within the architectural group Belgrade Five (1954-1970). It examines in detail Mitić's developmental creative path in three phases (1956-1960): the search for authorial expression during the 1950s in the project studio Atrium, when his authorial duality comes to the fore, imbued with a strong sense of modus operandi and modus vivendi; crystallization of the author's expression within a five-member group, through a series of competitions and the first major accomplished project in the first housing estate within the Central zone of New Belgrade; and reaching full authorial maturity in his first major independent contracted design and construction project, for the EFGH local community center complex, with the S-10 commercial and residential tower. This is historical evidence of the possible different physiognomy of the future center of New Belgrade, with its recognizable architecture.

Abstract:
Czech economy went through a substantial transformation in last two decades affecting business environments of all fields. This paper presents partial results of the Czech development market analysis. It explains the characteristics of real-estate development, real-estate development market and the complexity of the real-estate development process, including market research, site selection (using feasibility analysis), due diligence, property acquisition, project design, obtaining entitlements, financing, construction, lease-up or sale or operation, if the project is retained as and asset. The significant growth in last decade of the analyzed market is slowing down due to current greater circumspection of banks when providing credits for new development projects, drop of real property prices in Western Europe and at the same time greater revenues from real properties in Eastern Europe. The inhibition of the investment in commercial real property (both what number of transactions concerns, and total volume of investment) is influenced by so-called mortgage crisis on the U. S. and British real estate market. In Czech market, the factors are reflected in a number of respects. The paper suggests future steps of the intended research, focus on identification of factors affecting decision-making process when preparing real-estate development project, finding interrelationships among these factors, quantification and setting weight of the factors, creation of a decision-making process model and its test on a real case. The model should contribute to decrease waste of time and money investment in these feasibility calculations by providing a tool which helps pre-select projects with higher chance of success in earlier phase.

Abstract:
AbstractCARMENES (Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-earths with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs) is a new instrument currently undergoing commissioning at the 3.5 m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory. It has been constructed by a consortium of eleven Spanish and German institutions. The scientific goal of the project is a 600-night radial-velocity survey targeting 300 M dwarfs with sufficient precision to detect terrestrial planets in their habitable zones. The CARMENES instrument consists of two separate échelle spectrographs covering the wavelength range from 0.55 to 1.7 μm at a spectral resolution of R = 82,000, fed by fibers from the Cassegrain focus of the telescope. Both spectrographs are housed in a temperature-stabilized environment in vacuum tanks, to enable a long-term radial velocity precision of 1 m s−1. The wavelength calibration will be done with Th-Ne and U-Ne emission line lamps, and with Fabry-Pérot etalons.

Abstract:
Abstract Quantitative data on turbulence variables aloft—above the region of the atmosphere conveniently measured from towers—have been an important but difficult measurement need for advancing understanding and modeling of the stable boundary layer (SBL). Vertical profiles of streamwise velocity variances obtained from NOAA’s high-resolution Doppler lidar (HRDL), which have been shown to be approximately equal to turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) for stable conditions, are a measure of the turbulence in the SBL. In the present study, the mean horizontal wind component U and variance σ2u were computed from HRDL measurements of the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity using a method described by Banta et al., which uses an elevation (vertical slice) scanning technique. The method was tested on datasets obtained during the Lamar Low-Level Jet Project (LLLJP) carried out in early September 2003, near the town of Lamar in southeastern Colorado. This paper compares U with mean wind speed obtained from sodar and sonic anemometer measurements. The results for the mean U and mean wind speed measured by sodar and in situ instruments for all nights of LLLJP show high correlation (0.71–0.97), independent of sampling strategies and averaging procedures, and correlation coefficients consistently >0.9 for four high-wind nights, when the low-level jet speeds exceeded 15 m s−1 at some time during the night. Comparison of estimates of variance, on the other hand, proved sensitive to both the spatial and temporal averaging parameters. Several series of averaging tests are described, to find the best correlation between TKE calculated from sonic anemometer data at several tower levels and lidar measurements of horizontal-velocity variance σ2u. Because of the nonstationarity of the SBL data, the best results were obtained when the velocity data were first averaged over intervals of 1 min, and then further averaged over 3–15 consecutive 1-min intervals, with best results for the 10- and 15-min averaging periods. For these cases, correlation coefficients exceeded 0.9. As a part of the analysis, Eulerian integral time scales (τ) were estimated for the four high-wind nights. Time series of τ through each night indicated erratic behavior consistent with the nonstationarity. Histograms of τ showed a mode at 4–5 s, but frequent occurrences of larger τ values, mostly between 10 and 100 s.

Abstract:
AbstractThe paper reports on the fifth (2012) season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project. The primary focus of the season was the continuation of the excavation of the prehistoric occupation layers in the Haua Fteah cave. A small trench (Trench U) was cut into Holocene (Neolithic) sediments exposed on the south wall of Charles McBurney's Upper Trench. Below this, the excavation of Trench M was continued, on the southern side of McBurney's Middle Trench. In previous seasons we had excavated Oranian ‘Epipalaeolithic’ layers dating toc.18,000–10,000 BP (years before the present). In 2012 the excavation continued downwards through Dabban ‘Upper Palaeolithic’ occupation layers, one of which was associated with a post-built structure and likely hearths. There are indications of an occupational hiatus separating the oldest Dabban from the youngest Levallois-Mousterian (Middle Palaeolithic or Middle Stone Age) lithic material. The Deep Sounding excavated by Charles McBurney in 1955 was cleared of backfill to its base, and its south-facing wall was recorded in detail and sampled extensively for materials for dating and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. McBurney believed that he had reached bedrock at the base of the Deep Sounding, but a small sounding (Trench S) cut into the sediments below this level found further, albeit sparse, evidence for human occupation. Whilst the antiquity of ‘Pre-Aurignacian’ human occupation at the site still needs to be resolved, it seems likely to reach back at least to Marine Isotope Stage 5e, the beginning of the last interglacial (c.130,000–115,000 BP). Important finds from the 2012 excavations in terms of the behavioural complexity of the human groups using the cave include a possible worked bone point from a Pre-Aurignacian layer and a granite rubbing stone in a Dabban layer from a source over 600 km from the cave.

Abstract:
A collection of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cultivars planted in the field for propagation in South Bohemia was surveyed in May and July of 2009 for the occurrence of detrimental viruses. A total of 67 plants of 10 cultivars (Berkeley, Burlington, Blue Crop, Bluetta, Darrow, Duke, Gila, Jersey, Late Blue, and Northland), were observed for typical Blueberry red ringspot virus (BRRV) symptoms that appear as reddish ring spots and blotches on stems and fruits, exclusively on the upper surface of the older leaves but not the underside. Samples of leaves were collected and maintained at –20°C until used for DNA extraction, then assayed for BRRV infection using PCR. Controls originated from the same blueberry cultivars in vitro. DNA was extracted from leaf tissue with a NucleoSpin Plant II kit for isolating genomic DNA according to the manufacturer's instructions (Macherey-Nagel, Düren, Germany). Primer pair BRRV15/16, which amplified fragments of the reverse transcriptase gene (1), was used in PCR for BRRV detection. The program used for PCR amplification was 94°C for 2 min, followed by 35 cycles at 94°C for 30 s, 49°C for 30 s, and 70°C for 45 s, followed by a final extension at 70°C for 5 min. The total PCR volume of 25 μl contained 20 ng of DNA, 200 μmol liter–1 dNTPs, 0.5 μl of each primer BRRV15 and BRRV16 (20 pmol μl–1), 75 mM Tris-HCl pH 8.8, 20 mM (NH4)2SO4, 0.01% Tween 20, 2.5 mM MgCl2, 2.5 U of Taq Purple DNA polymerase, and stabilizers (Top-Bio Ltd., Prague, Czech Republic). Amplifications were conducted in an MJ Research (Waltham, MA) thermocycler. Aliquots (4 μl) of each PCR product were analyzed by electrophoresis in tris-acetate-EDTA buffer. No BRRV symptoms were observed on the plants in early spring, yet BRRV was detected in one symptom-free bush of cv. Darrow by PCR. In July, typical symptoms developed on that and another cv. Darrow bush that was also positive by PCR. DNA fragments of the expected sizes were amplified from total nucleic acid samples of both infected blueberry bushes using primers BRRV15/16, while no amplification products were detected in plants without symptoms. The amplicons obtained with primers BRRV15/BRRV16 were sequenced and revealed 97.5%-nt identity to the BRRV putative reverse transcriptase gene (GenBank Accession No. AF404509). The 845 nt of the amplicon has been deposited at GenBank under Accession No. HM107773. The disease was likely introduced in infected planting material, since no highbush blueberry plantations exist in the vicinity and V. corymbosum is not native to the Czech Republic. In conclusion, to our knowledge, this is the first report of Blueberry red ringspot virus (genus Soymovirus, family Caulimoviridae) in V. corymbosum L. in the Czech Republic. Symptom observation and PCR testing for BRRV should therefore, be incorporated into the certification scheme for highbush blueberry in the Czech Republic. Reference: (1) J. J. Polashock et al. Abstract:
AbstractA new Swiss glacier inventory is to be compiled from satellite data for the year 2000. The study presented here describes two major tasks: an accuracy assessment of different methods for glacier classification with Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data and a digital elevation model (DEM); the geographical information system (GIS)-based methods for automatic extraction of individual glaciers from classified satellite data and the computation of three-dimensional glacier parameters (such as minimum, maximum and median elevation or slope and orientation) by fusion with a DEM. First results obtained by these methods are presented in Part II of this paper (Kääb and others, 2002). Thresholding of a ratio image from TM4 and TM5 reveals the best-suited glacier map. The computation of glacier parameters in a GIS environment is efficient and suitable for worldwide application. The methods developed contribute to the U. S. Geological Survey-led Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) project which is currently compiling a global inventory of land ice masses within the framework of global glacier monitoring (Haeberli and others, 2000).
