Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine and shed light on differences surrounding masculinity respective femininity in two selected commercials for the brand Gillette and Gillette Venus. The commercials were broadcasted on Swedish commercial TV during April 2016. The study examines and answers the formulation of questions of how the brands and biological sex are visualized in the commercials and how language use is expressed to appeal to respective target audience. The theoretical framework proceeds from gender theory, brand theory and semiotic theory. To examine all significant elements in the commercials, they are being studied through the direct content and later the subliminal content within. The direct content corresponds the elements which can be seen at first glance and later which subliminal importance it may have. These correspond to the terms denotation and connotation which has been the benchmark of the study’s analysis. Gillette’s ads contain, according to this study, stereotypes and norms which creates categories for how individuals should act until depictions of expected masculinity and femininity. These depictions are uncovered by contrasting the commercials to discover how they diverse differ from each other. Firstly, Gillette Venus commercial for women is described and later Gillette’s commercial for men. Both proceed first from the denotative content and later analyzed based on connotations. In the compilation of analysis and result of both the commercials, myth is discussed in relation to denotation and connotation. This part analyzes the common basis of the study's theoretical framework, gender and brand theory. The study’s result, in relation to selected theories, indicates how the brand Gillette maintains and reproduces gender order through depraved representation of gender. The company's all important structural elements depict transparent images of how men and women should relate to the brands through masculine and feminine traits. Gillette has a strong brand building in that they are clear about their message and manages to appeal to two different target groups of women and men. However, from a gender perspective reproduced stereotypes and norms by distinguishing biological sex based on expected preferences of design. The end result answers the study’s questions by being divided into separate headlines: Visualisering, Maskulinitet och femininitet, Språkbruk. Our conclusion is that Gillette and Gillette Venus’ presentations of biological sex is stereotypical and becomes limiting to people who are encouraged to allocate themselves to a masculine and feminine category.

Full textThis research aims to delimit and compare the masculinities represented in the storytelling of two advertising pieces of the Gillette brand broadcasted in the United States: a spot from 1989 with another from 2019. For this, the theoretical bases of concepts such as: gender roles, gender stereotype, masculinity and storytelling. Taking the social nature of gender as a starting point, it seeks to identify the characteristics of the male gender role as well as the stereotypes related to it, thus delimiting the characteristics of the masculinities present in the advertising narrative as well as the evolution of this due to the 30-year difference. In the same way, make visible the role of advertising in society as well as storytelling as a narrative resource. To achieve the objective, an interpretive qualitative study will be carried out in which it is sought to analyze the perception of male university students with respect to both spots.

Full textThis article investigates the archetype of the hero and masculinities in advertising. The project focuses on validating: 1) the possibility of change in heteronormative attitudes in male students of the faculties of Humanities, Engineering and Arts of UNMSM, UNAC and ENSAD. 2) The resistance to change of this target against an equal gender discourse. The Gillette case is used: We believe. The best man can be as an archetypal advertising speech. Based on a non-representative sample (n = 297), low statistical variability is shown in the general average. However, there are changes of greater solidity in specific variables such as the role of family gender and male body expression. The existence of attitudinal change in the sample is suggested, but rejection of persuasion and contradiction in the gender equality dimension is visualized.

Commiphora leptophloeos, usually known as Imburana of Sertão belongs to the Burseraceae family and is traditionally used by Brazilian indigenous tribes for the treatment of their infirmities. Herein we performed full phytochemical characterization, showing its notable amounts of phenolics compounds endowed with high antioxidant activity in five extracts such as aqueous (CLAQE), methanolic (CLMEE) chloroform (CLCLE), cyclohexane (CLCHE) and ethyl acetate (CLAEE). C. leptophloeos phytochemical prospection revealed the presence of phenolic contents, tannins, coumarins, flavonoids and reducing sugars, secondary metabolites used by the plants for their defense. The qualitative phytochemical analysis by TLC of C. leptophloeos extracts detected the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids and reducing sugars. H1NMR analysis revealed the presence of hinokinin, a bioactive lignan characterized in this article. The phenolic compounds were identified by HPLC and three were described: Gallic, Chlorogenic and Protocatechuic acids. CLAQE presented the major contents of phenolic compounds with 33.64 ± 0.5 mg GAE/g and flavonoids with 19.3 ± 0.70 mg QE/g, for tannins contents CLCLE showed 9.70 ± 0.2 mg TAE/g, for coumarins content CLCHE showed 1.14 ± 0.81 mg BZE/g and for soluble sugars CLMEE presented 53.30 g.100g-1mg. In Total antioxidant capacity (%TAC) all extracts showed significant antioxidant activity for both concentrations of 1-10 mg/mL (≥100%, p-value <0.001). All the extracts induced low levels of cell death (viability ≥ 80%) within 24-hour period. In addition, cytotoxic results were not correlated with either phenols (r = -0.15) or flavonoids (r = -0.20). Altogether, we showed that the barks extracts from C. leptophloeos are antioxidants source being of potential use in preventing oxidative conditions. CLAQE presented the major contents of phenolic compounds with 33.64 ± 0.5 mg GAE/g and flavonoids with 19.3 ± 0.70 mg QE/g, for tannins contents CLCLE showed 9.70 ± 0.2 mg TAE/g, for coumarins content CLCHE showed 1.14 ± 0.81 mg BZE/g and for soluble sugars CLMEE presented 53.30 g.100g-1mg. In Total antioxidant capacity (%TAC) all extracts showed a significant antioxidant activity for both concentrations of 1-10 mg/mL (≥100%, p-value <0.001). The present findings showed that C. leptophloeos possesses inhibitory properties against MRSA as well as various Gram-positives, Gram-negatives and Fungi microorganisms, and should also be investigated for its potential against Mycobacterium. Furthermore, we have identified for the first time the presence of hinokinin in Commiphora genus. The MIC values of hinokinin ranged from 0.0485 to 3.125 mg/mL in different S. aureus clinical isolates, and showed a bactericidal activity against MRSA isolated from blood (MMC 0.40 mg/mL) and postoperative secretion (MMC = 3.125 mg/mL). C. leptophloeos extracts showed antimicrobial activity against Mycobacterium species such as M. smegmatis (MIC = 12.5 mg/mL) and M. tuberculosis (MIC = 52 mg/mL). Herein we also determined C. leptophloeos toxicity by HC50 tests in vitro with hemolytic activity detected of 313±0.5 μg/mL. All the extracts induced low levels of cell death (viability ≥ 80%) by 24-hour period. In addition, these cytotoxic values were not correlated with either phenols (r = -0.15) or flavonoids (r = -0.20).

Infectious diseases remain a serious public health problem both in developing countries, where they are the main cause of the high mortality rates recorded, and in industrialized countries where there is an alarming incidence of antibiotic resistance. There is thus an increasing need for new compounds that can act by a direct antimicrobial effect or by an indirect effect, inhibiting resistance mechanisms of microorganisms. Medicinal plants, particularly those traditionally used against infectious diseases in developing countries, are a probable source for these types of compounds. In this context, Cordia gilletii De Wild (Boraginaceae), a medicinal plant from which root barks and leaves are traditionally used against infectious diseases in Democratic Republic of Congo, was investigated for biological activities and phytochemical composition. Root bark extracts showed interesting biological activities: (i) antimicrobial properties, acting directly (bactericid and bacteriostatic effects against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, respectively) or indirectly (enhancement or restoration of antibiotic activity on resistant strains); (ii) inhibitory effect on the expression of two Pseudomonas aeruginosa QS genes, lasB and rhlA; (iii) antiplasmodial effect against a chloroquine sensitive strain of Plasmodium falciparum; (iv) antioxidant effect determined by the free radical DPPH quenching. Leaves extracts showed only antiplasmodial activity.
Root barks extracts with the highest direct (methanol extract) and indirect (n-hexane extract) antimicrobial properties were fractionated to isolate and to identify the active compounds. To bio-guide the fractionation, the culture medium for the detection of active compounds on chromatographic plates (TLC-bioautography) was optimized. The compound ferulaldehyde, isolated from the methanol extract, showed antimicrobial, antioxidant and antiplasmodial properties. From the n-hexane extract two compounds were isolated, lupeol and friedelin. Lupeol showed indirect antimicrobial effect by decreasing the MIC of some antibiotics against MRSA; whereas friedelin was inactive. Although these three compounds have already been described in other plant species, this is the first report of their occurence in Cordia gilletii; the indirect antimicrobial effect of lupeol is described for the first time in this work.
As it belongs to the family of Boraginaceae, a family well known as one of the most important sources of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), Cordia gilletii is susceptible to contain these toxic compounds that were consequently researched. A GC-MS analysis did not reveal the presence of PAs (detection limit, 2 ppm) in root barks and leaves extracts of C. gilletii, suggesting a lack of PA-related toxicity of this plant. This reassuring finding needs to be confirmed with samples harvested at different locations.
This work reveals that C. gilletii may act against pathogenic microorganisms by: (i) a direct antimicrobial effect (partly due to férulaldéhyde); (ii) the enhancement or restoration of antibiotic activity against resistant strains (effect of lupeol); and (iii) an inhibitory effect on the expression of quorum sensing regulator genes, decreasing the virulence of microorganisms. These actions could help to fight infections caused by resistant strains.

Aedes aegypti has a large epidemiological importance for being the vector of viruses, such as yellow fever and dengue fever, being distributed across the tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. To find an alternative way for eradicating the mosquito, in this study it was evaluated the chemical characterization of the essential oil of Commiphora leptophloeos and its biological activity against A. aegypti through electrophysiological analyzes and tests of larvicidal activity, repellent and oviposition deterrent. The analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the presence of 55 compounds in the essential oil of C. leptophloeos being the α-phellandrene, trans-caryophyllene and β-phellandrene the constituents present in greater proportion, representing 26.26%, 18.01% and 12.93% respectively. By gas chromatography- electroantennographic detection were obtained 17 responses to the constituents of the oil, most of them being the sesquiterpenes, among them trans-Caryophyllene, one of the major compounds from the oil. From behavior for oviposition, tests with pregnant females of A. aegypti reveled that the essential oil of C. leptophloeos showed oviposition deterrent activity at concentrations of 100, 50 and 25 ppm and the average of eggs left on the test vessel was smaller than the average deposited in the control vessel. Oviposition test were also carried out with the α-phellandrene, the major compound of the oil, and two compounds that showed electrophysiological responses (trans-caryophyllene and α-humulene). The α-phellandrene showed no significant activity. The trans-Caryophyllene, in contrast, showed oviposition deterrent (p <0.004), as well as α-Humulene (p <0.003). The oil of C. leptophloeos not demonstrated biological activity against the test repellency dual choice olfactometer. The larvicidal activity was observed with LC50 of 99.4 ppm. In this context, the results show that the essential oil of C. leptophloeos is a promising source of compounds that induce behavioral responses in female of A. aegypti seeking for an oviposition site, with answers deterrents between the different compounds, in addition to acting as an agent larvicide.

The use of medicinal plants is an alternative for pest control, as they provide chemical compounds with potential ectoparasiticidal action. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro biological activity of extracts of Commiphora leptophloeos (Mart.) JB Gillett, Ziziphus joazeiro Mart., Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth, Abarema cochliacarpos (Gomes) Barneby & Grimes and Eugenia uniflora L. against ixodids, culicidae and small ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes. The tickcide activity was evaluated against Anocentor nitens by the technique of immersion of engorged females. Concentrations of 100 % and 50 % of the hydroalcoholic extracts of the leaves of C. leptophloeos, C. heliotropiifolius and Z. joazeiro and distilled water as negative control were used. In the assay with Culicids Aedes (stegomyia) aegypti third instar larvae were exposed to concentrations of 30 mg / mL, 20 mg / mL and 10 mg / mL of leaf extracts of C. leptophloeos and C. heliotropiifolius, and for Z. joazeiro 30 mg / mL, 1 mg / mL and 0.5 mg / mL according to a methodology recommended by the World Health Organization. An biological larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis sorovar israelensis at concentrations of 0.06 ppm and 0.37 ppm was used as positive control and a negative control with dechlorinated water. Under the same conditions, the ethanolic extract of A. cochliacarpos stem bark at a concentration of 10 mg / mL was tested, and the industrial larvicide Pyriproxyfen at a concentration of 0.002 g / L and distilled water were used as positive control and negative control respectively. The antihelminthic activity against gastrintestinal helminths of small ruminants was evaluated for the ethanolic extract of A. cochliacarpos stem bark (10 %, 25 % and 50 % concentrations) and of the aqueous extract of E. uniflora leaves (concentrations of 20 %), determined by the calculation of percentages of larvae reduction per gram of faeces. Negative controls were used with distilled water and positive controls with Ivermectin 1 % and Albendazole 5 %. The species C. leptophloeos was effective at all concentrations tested against A. nitens, and the species Z. joazeiro and C. heliotropiifolius demonstrated efficacy only at the concentration of 100 %. In the A. aegypti assay, the highest mortality rates were obtained at the highest concentrations tested, being 66.5 % for C. leptophloeos, 92.75 % for Z. joazeiro and 33.75 % for C. heliotropiifolius. With the extract of A. cochliacarpos (10 mg / mL) the mortality rate was 34.75 %. In the larvae reduction per gram of faeces, larvae of genus Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Oesophagostomum were identified, obtaining a highly effective reduction for the 25 % and 50% concentrations of A. cochliacarpos against the three genera. The aqueous extract of E. uniflora (20 %) had no effect on the reduction of the number of larvae of said gastrointestinal nematodes. It is concluded that hydroalcoholic extracts of the leaves of C. leptophloeos, Z. joazeiro and C. heliotropiifolius present biological activity against A. nitens, and the ethanolic extract of the stem bark of A. cochliacarpos shows a better mortality activity than conventionally commercial larvicides used against A. aegypti larvae. The aqueous extract of the leaves of E. uniflora at the concentration of 0.2 g / mL is not present enough to promote reduction of larvae per gram of feces.

Full textThe work of Gaspard André features regularly nowadays amongst those of the masters of Eclecticism. Born into a Protestant family from Switzerland, a student of the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons and later in Paris – where he would be one of the most brilliant amongst his peers - André began his career in Lyons in 1872, with commissions for religious buildings (the Protestant temple and the Church of Saint-Joseph). These were followed by further commissions for the Théâtre des Célestins and the fountain in the Place des Jacobins. From 1882 onwards, a wealthy clientele of businessmen (É. Aynard, the Gillets, F. Mangini, H. Germain) entrusted him with the task of building their villas, banks and factories. He would simultaneously be an ardent promoter of the decorative arts whilst he reached significant official positions. His final years (1889-96) were marked by a particular form of stylistic simplicity while he started a second new career in Switzerland (University of Lausanne). His style is characterised by unusual designs (schools in the Rue Tronchet) and never-before-seen plastic formulae (pure and asymmetric forms of his final projects). His writings reveal how his train of thought was enhanced by his close study of the main architectural trends of the second half of the 19th century, and the importance attached then, to the discussions and the debates on the origins of Classicism and its transformations. Conversely, his final works and their surprising constructive and formal sobriety – which have likely influenced architects like Tony Garnier or Paul Cret - clearly demonstrate the nature of the forces and tensions that favoured the emergence of the Modern Movement

Recent years, lots of company conducted an acquisition or merge to achieve the company’s growth objective. By doing so to get the synergy to increase productivity, reduce operating cost and extend to increase the shareholder’s interest. What ‘s the background of M&A decision and what strategic thinking being applied is worthwhile for doing after fact measurement and assessment to see how it works.。 What are the key successful factors of a centaury company? From study Gillette’s KSF can be told are 1) strong band equity 2) cost leadership 3) Product differential 4) Product innovation and 5) World-wide distribution channel. How of those sustainable KSFs being enlarge its effect and support any strategic actions and we can go further to analyse why and how Gillette to acquire Duracell. Hope this study to provide a good reference for a topic of diversification of company’s M & A. There are a lots of theories and structures can be applied and considered in the process of company’s diversification, In this study the following theories and structures will be quoted and discussed 1) Growth strategy 2) Diversification strategy 3) Globalisation 4) Entry mode of diversification 5) the role of Synergy and 6) M & A strategy. The major motive of Gillette to go for related diversification is searching for immediate 15% growth and Duracell fit preset requirement of Gillette in selecting business of a merger, such as 1) consumer product group 2) high tech product 3) global product 4) repeat-purchase product 5) growth opportunity 6) Global brand 7) compliable distribution channel. Although the actual battery market growth in 2000 was under-expectation. Duracell only achieved 55% of planned target. Duracell has been recognized as global brand by having 40% market share. It can be a failure case of high transaction cost incurred and low achieving rate to too optimistic prediction of Duracell merger, but it offers a good lesson for us to learn in positive side of 1) top management’s vision and mission and the application’s of growth strategy. However how to avoiding high transaction cost and having a reasonable prediction is a critical factor for successful merger. Clarified structure and strategic thinking have been defined and verified by this study. It is practical as a good reference. For future study, it is recommended to focus on the study of the price of merger and the competitive and industrial analysis of mergered company.

Full textIt has been well documented in literature that at least 80% of the general population will suffer from lower back pain or dysfunction at one stage in their lives. Recent literature suggests Sacroiliac joint dysfunction to be a common cause of lower back pain. Clinical interest in the dysfunction and the consequences of this joint being a major cause of lower back pain is growing, as more biomechanical clinicians are finding Sacroiliac joint disorders to be a common occurrence in clinical practice (Pool-Goudzwaard, Vleeming, Stoekart, Snijders and Mens, 1998). Sacroiliac syndrome is characterised by loss of joint play or altered mobility in the Sacroiliac joint‟s range of motion, and is usually associated with altered structural relationships in the region of the Sacroiliac joint (Grieve, 2001). This loss of normal movement is often adjusted by Chiropractors to regain normal mobility, however the correct diagnosis of the loss of mobility is required to induce the correct treatment. Motion palpation has been scrutinised by many researchers who widely questioned its inter-tester reliability. As yet there has been no consensus as to a „gold standard‟ for motion palpation of the Sacroiliac joint. This study aims to reconfirm the inter-examiner reliability of two such motion palpation tests, i.e. Gillet‟s motion palpation and the Standing Flexion test. One hundred participants underwent a double blind experimental study where the results from eight different examiners were recorded to obtain the reliability of the tests. Four examiners tested the participants using Gillet‟s motion palpation and four examiners used the Standing Flexion test. The results were recorded as either right, left or no restriction. The results were then compared and correlated. There was no statistically significant reliability found in either of the two tests. The mean reliability for the Standing Flexion test was found to be 59.31% while the Gillet‟s Motion Palpation produced a mean reliability of 56.38%. These two values are considerably lower than the expected 80% indicating low reliability between the two tests.
