Abstract:
This essay looks at the intellectual relationship between author Angela Gilliam and Afro-Brazilian scholar-activist Abdias Nascimento. In 1968, both Gilliam and Nascimento were involved in self-examination and reinvention in terms of the positive affirmation of blackness and politicization of racial consciousness. This was a crucial time of social change and political struggle for equal rights to citizenship in Brazil and the United States. It was in her interpreter-translator work for Nascimento that Gilliam’s relationship to cultural and political expressions of peoples of African descent became deepened. This essay is a longer version of the lecture she delivered during the 2015 Abdias Nascimento symposium held at Brown for which she sent to us to include in this special issue before her passing in September 2018.

Cadoret, Erwan. Thesis, Paris 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA030148/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This Ph.D. attempts to analyse the numerous dreamlike scenes (dreams, hallucinations, mind projections) to be found in six films directed by Terry Gilliam from 1985 to 2009: Brazil, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Tideland, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The first part delineates the range and limits of the dreamlike occurrences as well as their main characteristics, both on the dramatic side (the organisation and distribution of dreamlike scenes) and on the formal side (dreamlike effects). The second part deals with the main character’s body as an interface between the “real world” and the dream world depicted by the films, laying emphasis on three aspects: the body language, the all-important gaze and the hero’s ability to split himself in two. Finally, the third part studies how the dreamlike scenes contribute to build up Gilliam’s critical stance toward the modern world. Informed by a pessimistic view on human life barely alleviated by some glimpses of hope, Gilliam challenges the contemporary occidental societies, which he sees as suffused with materialism and a free-enterprise ideology

Deroche, Sophie. Thesis, Reims, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013REIML003.

Full text
Abstract:
The works of Lydie Salvayre, American movie directors Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam present a similar criticism of a society of simulacrum, by their use of the aesthetically grotesque. In their work, they question the use of newspeak, of the politically correct, and the mixing of reality and fiction. The dialectical working of the grotesque and its ability to produce an astonishing sense of vertigo enables it to bring out these contradictions. They are particularly concerned by the extent to which a society of consumption and simulacrum has modified the imaginary. These autors have observed that the transformation of signs into mere signifiers, something the workings of which are demonstrated in postmodernism, leads the individual to have a distorted relationship with reality, historical awareness and the symbol. The grotesque is that aesthetic form which allows them to make mixes in their work whilst preserving the meaning of the signified and which thereby allows them to restore a relationship to history and the symbol. The grotesque is that esthetic form which allows them to make mixes with no equivalent, since it shows opposites whilst conferring sense on them. The autors link their grotesque works to myth, that kind of fiction which enables us to have a instinctive relationship to knowledge by the means of particularly strong images. When all is said and done, the grotesque, in its anthropological and ontological dimension, reinstates a fiction which avoids the problems of simulacrum

Abstract:
The type of commentary a narrative is able to make is fully dependant on the type of narrator who is relating it. The visual elements present in a film are the true narrational forces which guide it. The presence of the camera, the use of lighting, the architecture, and the objects present in the film each have their own meaning. These elements come together to make a greater commentary than the dialogue. How these meanings interact with each other is what defines what type of narrator is present in the film. By analyzing what type of narrator is relating the story it is possible to examine what commentary the film is able to make. Mike Nichols? 1967 film The Graduate and Terry Gilliam?s 1998 film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson?s 1971 literary work Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas make commentaries that act as bookends for the ideals of the youth culture during the late 1960?s. Where as The Graduate is condemning the shining emptiness of 1967 suburban California society which its narrator inhabits, Fear and Loathing?s narrator is depicting the twisted abomination which grew within the emptiness of that society during those four years. The fact that Gilliam?s adaptation came 27 years after the source material was created allows for an even more specific translation of Thompson?s message. The Graduate is looking towards the unknown future where as Fear and Loathing is look backwards at the results. The Graduate is commenting on the current situation and looking forwards where as Fear and Loathing is looking backwards to see what has happened in the interim. It is this difference that forces the type of narration and the visual style employed by the films to be diametrically opposed.

Abstract:
The narratives around the quest for the Grail originated in the XI century and were of great importance to fix the image of a typical character of medieval society , the knight , as a new heroic style. In this sense, the knights who found the Grail in these narratives, especially in the literary cycle known as the Matter of Britain, represent the maximum configuration of this paradigm . This research aims to examine the permanence of such an image on film , it is also a narrative art , as were the novels of chivalry which originated the style. The corpus to be analyzed are three significant works of American filmmaker Terry Gilliam who directly or indirectly reproduce the issue Grail : Monty Python and The Holy Grail , 1974; The Fisher King, 1991 and Twelve Monkeys, 1995. Thus, looking to give an overview of thesis resumed literary image and medieval knights in film, as well as observe the changes in the pattern of these images described literarily to optical - sound representation

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This project takes a comprehensive look at model development for the classic magnetic levitation system and examines differences between the conventional mag-lev model and an actual system. Also examined are the effects that un-modeled dynamics can have on the stability of a simulated system. This project combines and expands upon modeling techniques presented in similar projects (Lawson and Gillies, 1989, Lin and Jou, 1993, Oguchi and Tomigashi, 1990, Wong, 1986), and presents a method for modeling the mag-lev system which combines conventional electromagnetic theory and data from the physical plant. The model is then tested by designing and simulating controllers with the model and then applying the controllers to the experimental apparatus.

Abstract:
Developing and maintaining a healthy work environment is an important consideration to the rail industry. Several theories have been advanced to examine, understand, and influence how workers function and interact within their working environments. These include motivational theories such as Taylor’s Theory of Scientific Management and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, models of moral develop such as developed by Kohlberg and Gilligan, theories of personality types like Myers–Brigg and Keirsey, and the theory of cultural dimensions developed by Hofstede. Positive work environments can contribute to safe and efficient operations, while negative work environments almost inevitably degrade performance and increase the potential for injury and accidents. Therefore understanding and managing these elements properly can greatly contribute to better organizational outcomes. This paper will then examine the underlying role of human behavior as determined by these theories appear to have played in 5 incidents at Metro–North Railroad in 2013–2014.

Abstract:
This paper presents the overall design of a 2 MW vertical-type wind turbine power generation system. Firstly, the performance of the jet-wheel turbo turbine was optimized by considering the design parameters such as the rotor inlet angle, the solidity, and the diameter-height ratio with the guide vanes fixed. The effects of the side guide vane and the opening area ratio upon the efficiency were tested. As the wind speed increases from 3m/s to 7m/s, the maximum power coefficient reached the limit value of about 0.6 based on the rotor area, which is much higher than those of ever-designed three-bladed horizontal turbines. The maximum power coefficients occurred at the tip speed ratio ranging between 0.6 and 0.7. Based on the performance of small prototype model, the large-scale wind turbine rotor was designed within the constraints of material cost, machining cost, structural safety at extreme conditions, and maintenance. Thus, the aspect ratio of the diameter-to-height and the hub-tip ratio were set as 0.8 and 0.0857, respectively. All sides of the rotor were almost opened to achieve a maximum efficiency with only possible blocking by the sprocket gear attached to the bottom of the rotor. To evaluate the structural safety of the turbine at extreme wind speeds over 25m/s lasting 10 minutes, the numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the pressure loadings on the blades and the guide vanes. According to the structural analysis based on the pressure loadings and its weight, the entire system is considered to be stable for the extreme and static loadings. The overall performance of the jet-wheel turbo wind-turbine system was analyzed to find the capacity factor for the wind characteristics of Gillim province in China by considering the gear box efficiency, the roller bearing losses, and the SCIG/DFIG generator efficiency.

Crispin, Darla. Artistic Research as a Process of Unfolding. Norges Musikkhøgskole, August 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.22501/nmh-ar.503395.

Abstract:
As artistic research work in various disciplines and national contexts continues to develop, the diversity of approaches to the field becomes ever more apparent. This is to be welcomed, because it keeps alive ideas of plurality and complexity at a particular time in history when the gross oversimplifications and obfuscations of political discourses are compromising the nature of language itself, leading to what several commentators have already called ‘a post-truth’ world. In this brutal environment where ‘information’ is uncoupled from reality and validated only by how loudly and often it is voiced, the artist researcher has a responsibility that goes beyond the confines of our discipline to articulate the truth-content of his or her artistic practice. To do this, they must embrace daring and risk-taking, finding ways of communicating that flow against the current norms. In artistic research, the empathic communication of information and experience – and not merely the ‘verbally empathic’ – is a sign of research transferability, a marker for research content. But this, in some circles, is still a heretical point of view. Research, in its more traditional manifestations mistrusts empathy and individually-incarnated human experience; the researcher, although a sentient being in the world, is expected to behave dispassionately in their professional discourse, and with a distrust for insights that come primarily from instinct. For the construction of empathic systems in which to study and research, our structures still need to change. So, we need to work toward a new world (one that is still not our idea), a world that is symptomatic of what we might like artistic research to be. Risk is one of the elements that helps us to make the conceptual twist that turns subjective, reflexive experience into transpersonal, empathic communication and/or scientifically-viable modes of exchange. It gives us something to work with in engaging with debates because it means that something is at stake. To propose a space where such risks may be taken, I shall revisit Gillian Rose’s metaphor of ‘the fold’ that I analysed in the first Symposium presented by the Arne Nordheim Centre for Artistic Research (NordART) at the Norwegian Academy of Music in November 2015. I shall deepen the exploration of the process of ‘unfolding’, elaborating on my belief in its appropriateness for artistic research work; I shall further suggest that Rose’s metaphor provides a way to bridge some of the gaps of understanding that have already developed between those undertaking artistic research and those working in the more established music disciplines.
