Cadoret, Erwan. Thesis, Paris 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA030148/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This Ph.D. attempts to analyse the numerous dreamlike scenes (dreams, hallucinations, mind projections) to be found in six films directed by Terry Gilliam from 1985 to 2009: Brazil, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Tideland, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The first part delineates the range and limits of the dreamlike occurrences as well as their main characteristics, both on the dramatic side (the organisation and distribution of dreamlike scenes) and on the formal side (dreamlike effects). The second part deals with the main character’s body as an interface between the “real world” and the dream world depicted by the films, laying emphasis on three aspects: the body language, the all-important gaze and the hero’s ability to split himself in two. Finally, the third part studies how the dreamlike scenes contribute to build up Gilliam’s critical stance toward the modern world. Informed by a pessimistic view on human life barely alleviated by some glimpses of hope, Gilliam challenges the contemporary occidental societies, which he sees as suffused with materialism and a free-enterprise ideology

Deroche, Sophie. Thesis, Reims, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013REIML003.

Full text
Abstract:
The works of Lydie Salvayre, American movie directors Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam present a similar criticism of a society of simulacrum, by their use of the aesthetically grotesque. In their work, they question the use of newspeak, of the politically correct, and the mixing of reality and fiction. The dialectical working of the grotesque and its ability to produce an astonishing sense of vertigo enables it to bring out these contradictions. They are particularly concerned by the extent to which a society of consumption and simulacrum has modified the imaginary. These autors have observed that the transformation of signs into mere signifiers, something the workings of which are demonstrated in postmodernism, leads the individual to have a distorted relationship with reality, historical awareness and the symbol. The grotesque is that aesthetic form which allows them to make mixes in their work whilst preserving the meaning of the signified and which thereby allows them to restore a relationship to history and the symbol. The grotesque is that esthetic form which allows them to make mixes with no equivalent, since it shows opposites whilst conferring sense on them. The autors link their grotesque works to myth, that kind of fiction which enables us to have a instinctive relationship to knowledge by the means of particularly strong images. When all is said and done, the grotesque, in its anthropological and ontological dimension, reinstates a fiction which avoids the problems of simulacrum

Abstract:
The type of commentary a narrative is able to make is fully dependant on the type of narrator who is relating it. The visual elements present in a film are the true narrational forces which guide it. The presence of the camera, the use of lighting, the architecture, and the objects present in the film each have their own meaning. These elements come together to make a greater commentary than the dialogue. How these meanings interact with each other is what defines what type of narrator is present in the film. By analyzing what type of narrator is relating the story it is possible to examine what commentary the film is able to make. Mike Nichols? 1967 film The Graduate and Terry Gilliam?s 1998 film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson?s 1971 literary work Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas make commentaries that act as bookends for the ideals of the youth culture during the late 1960?s. Where as The Graduate is condemning the shining emptiness of 1967 suburban California society which its narrator inhabits, Fear and Loathing?s narrator is depicting the twisted abomination which grew within the emptiness of that society during those four years. The fact that Gilliam?s adaptation came 27 years after the source material was created allows for an even more specific translation of Thompson?s message. The Graduate is looking towards the unknown future where as Fear and Loathing is look backwards at the results. The Graduate is commenting on the current situation and looking forwards where as Fear and Loathing is looking backwards to see what has happened in the interim. It is this difference that forces the type of narration and the visual style employed by the films to be diametrically opposed.

Abstract:
The narratives around the quest for the Grail originated in the XI century and were of great importance to fix the image of a typical character of medieval society , the knight , as a new heroic style. In this sense, the knights who found the Grail in these narratives, especially in the literary cycle known as the Matter of Britain, represent the maximum configuration of this paradigm . This research aims to examine the permanence of such an image on film , it is also a narrative art , as were the novels of chivalry which originated the style. The corpus to be analyzed are three significant works of American filmmaker Terry Gilliam who directly or indirectly reproduce the issue Grail : Monty Python and The Holy Grail , 1974; The Fisher King, 1991 and Twelve Monkeys, 1995. Thus, looking to give an overview of thesis resumed literary image and medieval knights in film, as well as observe the changes in the pattern of these images described literarily to optical - sound representation

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Sexual arousal is likely an important situational factor in date rape. Research shows that sexual arousal increases self-reported willingness to engage in sexually aggressive behaviour. Chapter One reviews the situational, perpetrator, and victim characteristics of date rape. Chapter Two describes an experiment that examined the effect of sexual arousal on measures of decision-making, including Risky Choice Task, Balloon Analogue Risk Task, Future Discounting, and on a measure of Viewing Time. Participants were 20 heterosexual men and 22 heterosexual women 18 to 25 years old. Results revealed that sexually aroused women preferred higher variance options compared to women who were not, and the opposite was observed for men. No other significant effects were observed. Chapter Three describes Experiment 2 which included another neutral condition and a measure of sexual decision-making. Results revealed no effect of condition on behavioural or sexual decision-making, nor on viewing times. Chapter Four provides a general discussion and directions for future research.

Brower-Latz, Andrew Phillip. "The social philosophy of Gillian Rose : speculative diremptions, absolute ethical life." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11302/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an original reconstruction of Gillian Rose’s work as a distinctive social philosophy within the Frankfurt School tradition that holds together the methodological, logical, descriptive, metaphysical and normative moments of social theory; provides a critical theory of modern society; and offers distinctive versions of ideology critique based on the history of jurisprudence, and mutual recognition based on a Hegelian view of appropriation. Rose’s philosophy integrates three key moments of the Frankfurt tradition: a view of the social totality as both an epistemological necessity and normative ideal; a philosophy that is its own metaphilosophy because it integrates its own logical and social preconditions within itself; and a critical analysis of modern society that is simultaneously a critique of social theory. Rose’s work is original in the way it organises these three moments around absolute ethical life as the social totality, its Hegelian basis, and its metaphysical focus on law and jurisprudence. Rose’s Hegelian philosophy includes an account of reason that is both social and logical without reducing philosophy to the sociology of knowledge, thereby steering between dogmatism and relativism. Central to this position are the historically developing nature of rationality and knowing, and an account of the nature of explanation as depending on a necessarily and necessarily imperfectly posited totality. No totality is ever fully attained but is brought to view through the Hegelian-speculative exposition of history, dirempted experience, and the tensions immanent to social theories. Rose explored one main social totality within her social philosophy – absolute ethical life – as the implied unity of law and ethics, and of finite and infinite. This enables a critique simultaneously and immanently of society and social philosophy in three ways. First, of both the social form of bourgeois property law and social contract theories reflective of it. Second, of social theorising that insufficiently appreciates its jurisprudential determinations and/or attempts to eliminate metaphysics. Third, the broken middle shows the state-civil society and the law-ethics diremptions as two fundamental features of modern society and as frequently unacknowledged influences on social theorising.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Culture, orgin and identity are hot topics that are being discussed everywhere, for example in newspapers, lunchrooms and on Twitter. Politicians, media and ordinary people have displayed different antiracist acts, for example campaigns, marches and political actions. But you may wonder if it really is that effective, or if the antiracism reproduces racism with its language. The purpose of this study is to see if articles from the newspaper Aftonbladet's antiracist campaign ”We like different!” reproduces racism through its language. The method that is used is discourse analysis, more specific Chantal Laclau och Ernesto Mouffes discourse theory. The theories the study relies on are race, racism, framing, racism in news, binary oppositions, stereotypes, whiteness and orientalism. Two discourses were found in the material, ”We like different” and ”We like the same”. The most central piece in the ”We like different”-discourse is ”different”, which is associated with other origins than Swedish and different skincolor than white. ”Swedish” and ”white” are instead connected to ”the same”. ”Different” is portrayed as “the other”, the negative part of an binary opposition against ”the same”. ”We” is an identity the articles gives ”We like different” and is a dominant part of a binary opposition against ”them”. The identity ”immigrant” also exists in the discourse and is build as a stereotype. ”We like the same” is given a ”them” identity. ”Racism” is a central piece in the discourse and is associated with categorizing humans after ”race”. ”The Swedendemocrats” is build as an identity, and is connected to ”ignorance”, ”judging people after the color of their skin” and ”cold”. ”The voters of the Swedendemocrats” is described in a different way than the party itself. The peoples responsibility is taken away and they are instead connected to ”dissatisfaction” and that they ”don't understand” what they are voting for.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a missing link between the British feminist art movement from the 1970s onwards and three contemporary female artists, namely Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing and Sam Taylor-Wood. The dissertation demonstrates the influence that feminist art has had on contemporary women's art. It shows how various elements, typically associated with feminist art from a previous generation of female artists. have been either consciously or unconsciously incorporated into the way the three artists in question approach their work. The ideas. concerns and ways of working of a previous generation of feminist artists are discussed in relation to gender politics, the idea of the traditional male "genius", the question of feminist art practice, the role of the female body, performance versus performativity and the representation of women in visual culture. The contemporary work is discussed in relation to the above issues, drawing out comparisons to feminist art practice where appropriate. The thesis also contextualises Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing and Sam Taylor-Wood within the generation of the Young British Artists (YBAs) of the 1990s. Here it focuses on ideas such as self-promotion versus patronage, the particular sensationalist art practice of the YBAs, the problematic attitude towards cultural theory and finally, it demonstrates how women artists of that particular period tended to work. The dissertation does not aim to present a comprehensive survey of all feminist visual arts activity in Britain and North America, the geographical locations of interest for this thesis, nor is it an all encompassing art historical overview of the activities in London, during the 1990s. The thesis should be understood as a celebration of the significance of the feminist art movement and as a demonstration of the validity of many of its concerns, even today, as exemplified in the work of the three artists in question.

Abstract:
" Gillion de Trazegnies " is an anonymous novel in prose written in the middle of the fifteenth century and dedicated to Philippe le Bon. In the first book, we submit a critical edition of the novel, unpublished as yet, including its five manuscripts in middle French. A detailed introduction presents the novel through the study of the date, the author, the manuscripts, the illustrations, etc. The author tries to glorify the Trazegnies, a great family of Hainaut, by telling the (fictitious) adventures of one of its members, a bigamous man with twin sons. The novel is useful to Philippe le Bon propaganda (Hainaut-Orient) but above all defines itself as a " dynastic " account. Through other dynastic stories (" Mélusine ", " La Geste du Chevalier au Cygne ", " La Grande Chronique de Normandie " and the cycle of " Jean d'Avesnes "), we study in the second book the characteristics of a medieval dynastic narrative, that always serves political stakes more than family memories

Steinmann, Catherine A. "Visceral exposure : Melanie Gilligan, Hito Steyerl, and the biopolitics of visibility." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52473.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers a small group of recent video works by artists Melanie Gilligan and Hito Steyerl through the Foucauldian lens of biopolitics. I argue that these works implicitly reveal how biopower viscerally exposes and abstracts the neoliberal subject, constructing it in precarious tension as ostensibly coherent yet infinitely fissionable. Introducing the study by discussing the concept of biopower in Michel Foucault’s work, I also draw on work by Gilles Deleuze, Boris Groys, Brian Massumi, and others to suggest how biopower shapes the subject through ever-expanding forms of surveillance and documentation. Biopower does not merely take advantage of the subject’s legibility, however; instead, I argue, it produces subjectivity through visual and data-driven forms of description that tend to both function and be masked as representation. In the second chapter, I contend that Steyerl’s Strike (2010) and Strike II (2012) and Gilligan’s Popular Unrest (2010) intimate how biopolitical subjecthood is fashioned through photographic, behavioral, physiological, and other technoscientific forms of tracking and modelling. These works propose “strikes” against biopower’s relentlessly visualizing drive. I argue in chapter three that Gilligan’s Popular Unrest and Steyerl’s Lovely Andrea (2007) and Red Alert (2007) make explicit the relationship between contemporary forces of intensity and abstraction (formal, economic, social), revealing them as complementary dimensions of biopower that produce a fractured, divided subject amenable to “orderly” visualization. These works propose the redemptive potential of redeployments of affect. In the fourth chapter, I argue that Gilligan’s Self-Capital and Steyerl’s In Free Fall (both 2009) demonstrate the relationship of global economic crisis to crises of biopolitical subjectivity. Gilligan’s work suggests the character of the archetypical neoliberal subject Foucault describes as “entrepreneur of himself,” tracing its modes of self-production and projecting its imminent collapse. Steyerl’s turns away from the subject, exploring the vitality and agency of the object and questioning object-subject distinctions. In different ways, Gilligan and Steyerl offer proposals for shedding a biopolitical subjectivity that is increasingly untenable. Illuminating the role of visceral exposure in the biopolitics of subjectivation while reconfiguring this very process, their work extends and exceeds other forms of political engagement with the problem of biopolitics.

Schultz, Gillian. "Repetitive strain injury among South African employees : prevalence and the relationship with exhaustion and work engagement / Gillian Schultz." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4617.

Full text
Abstract:
The work environment of today is synonymous with stress, fatigue and exhaustion. As a result, the incidence of workplace injury and disease is increasingly commonplace. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is the most common form of work–related ill–health. If the symptoms are not recognised and addressed early, serious and more chronic manifestations of the symptoms can emerge, subsequently affecting the quality and duration of a persons' working life. RSI also has significant implications for organisations in terms of lost productivity, drops in work quality and costly compensation claims. Although there is ongoing international research available concerning workplace injury and disease to inform business and the employee, there is less comprehensive and regularly updated research within the South African context. Considering employers can be held accountable for diseases that have arisen out of and in the course of an individual's employment, this research adds value in ascertaining the magnitude of RSI in South Africa. Bearing in mind international research has expanded its focus to include the potential influence of ergonomic and psychosocial factors in the development of RSI, it has become necessary to consider additional factors that may play a role in the development and maintenance of RSI. The objectives of this study were to 1) determine the frequency of RSI experienced amongst South African employees; 2) examine the frequency of RSI across three well–being groups; and 3) identify whether there are significant differences across the three well–being groups. An availability sample (N = 15 664) was utilised to determine the frequency of experience of RSI in a sample of South African employees. Frequencies were used to determine the incidence of RSI symptoms for the total sample. Participants were then selected into groups based on their experience of vitality, work devotion and exhaustion (n = 4 411) in order to determine the frequency of RSI experienced for three well–being groups. ANOVA was used to determine if there were significant RSI differences between these three well–being groups. The results of this study highlight that RSI is prevalent amongst the South African population. Of those participants who responded 'sometimes' and 'frequently' (experiencing RSI), 47% indicated experiencing neck, shoulder and back discomfort, followed by 42% reporting eyestrain, and 24% muscle stiffness. These results are comparable with international statistics, indicating that a relatively large percentage of South African employees experience RSI. The results further showed that the frequency of experience of RSI symptoms does differ across the three well–being groups. It is evident that RSI is more prevalent in the well–being group that demonstrates vital exhaustion when compared to those who are work engaged yet exhausted, and those who are truly work engaged. Secondly, the results clearly revealed statistically significant differences between all of these groups. Thus, those individuals who are vitally exhausted experience significantly greater RSI symptoms than those who are truly work engaged or engaged with exhaustion. In addition, those individuals who are work engaged with exhaustion demonstrate significantly more RSI symptoms than those who are truly work engaged. Thus, this study suggests the potential role of exhaustion in the development of RSI. Recommendations were made for the organisation and for future research.

To elucidate the important contribution of care ethics in improving human relations and social intimates, this work reveals the fragility and lack of ethics on the formation of a just society, equal, peaceful and caring. To this end, we study on the moral development of men and women, warning of the natural differences between the sexes, which change for both the way of seeing life and live it - which does not imply inferiority to some genres. From this study it is clear that the natural care is innate to humans, it provides a tendency to act for the good of all life forms and nature as a whole. But it is evident here a greater sensitivity of women to such care because they possess perception and more emotion than men, which make them more participatory and involved in relationships. This greater openness to care found in women, due in part to the strong and lasting relationship with their mothers. Thus is revealed the power that women have to positively change the direction of human relationships, providing careful with your example, protective and caring, the awakening of a new and comprehensive ethics - opens to the truth, and features especially for affections. Therefore, the care ethics arises from the life experiences of women and aims, through them, to join the men's morality in order to bring out the relevant fact of interdependence between human beings, of human fragility and the need for relationships to the fullness of life

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to investigate the meaning and importance of the female friendship within Ellen Moers tradition and theory regarding the female gothic. In this essay, I argue that the female friendship has played an important role in the portrayal of the Gothic fiction as socially critical of women’s position in the society, mainly by examining the two works Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. The essay is also interested in how the female gothic has developed over time and whether the notion can be applied while analysing more contemporary gothic, and thus, considers the works’ different time periods.

Abstract:
In eighteenth-century England, general anxieties towards the unchecked and excessive British power and authority were caricaturized in images depicting France and its people. Extensive literature has been published on the representations of French individuals and symbols in satirical prints, yet scholars have neglected the role of monuments in satirical imagery. This thesis looks at James Gillray’s Siege de la Colonne de Pompée—Science in the Pillory (1799) and Design for Naval Pillar (1800) and George Cruikshank’s A view of the grand triumphal pillar (1801) to unveil how British printmakers utilized satirical monuments to warn viewers of both Napoléon Bonaparte’s threat to the European continent and the harmful actions of their own British governmental figures. The role of monument culture, victory culture, nationalism and print distribution is also analyzed to highlight the affect of these prints on the British, and larger European, publics.

Abstract:
Deconstructing this approach by including the “feminine” view introduces the idea of reciprocity within the context of human relations. It, thus, provides a more comprehensive approach on human development and expands the boundaries of ethical understanding beyond the intellectual interpretation of moral judgment. Considering temporality and people’s relationships as part of the concept of justice, it allows other views and standards when defining human maturity because it opens up to the domains of rights and responsibility, articulating care and justice in the ethical thought. Its relevance is both ethical and axiological because reflecting upon the ethics of care is to consider that “different voice” and to set an argument about values and an ethics for all, an inclusive one that allows public and private places to be shared by men and women, within a society where we can hope for a better life.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to investigate why a group of young adults, living in the village of Järvsö in Hälsingland, choose to live their lives according to the ideals attributed to the peasantry in the early 19th century. The essay examines what gives them inspiration for their way of living and the driving forces behind their choices.   The theoretical starting points of the study are production of cultural heritage, nostalgia and performance studies. The study is based on interviews with young adults, and the older generation that inspires them, living in Järvsö, as well as participant observations and media coverage.   The examination of how the cultural heritage has been produced in 2018 gives an insight into the everyday life of those who choose to live by these ideals today in Järvsö and how it has shaped and affected how Järvsö is presented to the outside world.   The study concludes that the ideals that the young adults strive for are to live as environmentally friendly as possible. The inspiration comes from stories about people who lived during the 19th century and the aesthetics attributed to the folk culture. They use folk culture that includes stories, folk music, folk dance, folk costumes, crafts and games and reshape these expressions and adapt them to a contemporary life in the 21st century.   Because the decorated farmhouses of Hälsingland have been declared world heritage, there is also an authenticity guarantee which gives the interviewees legitimacy for their life choices and confirmation of the importance of passing these folk traditions on to future generations.

Abstract:
Reading comprehension among boys is something that has deteriorated over the years. But is it so that boys do not read or do they just read things that does not count? Today there is an expanded textual concept. This means that even movies, comics, games, music and images counts as text, not just printed words on paper. I therefore want to investigate how boys in upper secondary school describes the text they encounter during their free time as well as the texts they encounter in school during the subject of Swedish. I want to see how their attitude is to these two textworlds. Six interviews with six diffrent boys from a upper secondary school north of Stockholm has been made. They are all in the alignment electricity program and are now in the second grade. They have all been reading the course “Svenska 1, 100p”. At first, the respondents said they did not read or meet text during their free time. They pointed out that they did not read books. When the respondents then learned that text could be more than only books, their answers changed and a textworld was created. The respondents describe the textworld in their free time as primarily screen-based. This is where they create a community with their friends and the texts has also the function to pass time. In the subject “Svenska 1” the respondents describe the textworld as non-screen based. They mean that they mainly read books. On the other hand, they see this as a positive thing as they are confident that the teacher chooses the "right" books and that they will learn something from it. This result shows that boys are reading, but usually not books. In the texts they encounter, one finds mostly male main characters. They are often supernaturally strong and smart and are classified as superheroes.

Parry, Gregory David. "The 'void' in Simone Weil and the 'broken middle' in Gillian Rose : the genesis of the search for salvation." Thesis, Durham University, 2006. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1300/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine the respective ways in which Simone Weil and Gillian Rose assessth e human condition as the conflict and tension of human life. The use of the notion of `contradiction' represents conflict. Employed by both women, `contradiction' will be explored through their assessmentso f the human condition. With their respective uses of this notion, Weil's and Rose's assessmentsd evelop into a wider field of application using very specific, conceptual precepts: the `void' by Weil and the `broken middle' by Rose. The essential constructive claim is that each of these conceptualities can properly be viewed as attempts to explore what shall be referred to as the genesis of the search for salvation; the attempt, that is, to elucidate through both women the possibility of negotiating in and with `contradiction' towards a sense of inner-transformation. This claim is supported by their illumination of what it means to live with, in and through contradiction in the world in relation with God. Given that Weil and Rose identified with Gnosticism, neo-gnostic soteriology, which draws the human condition into a fulfilled sense of self-realisation about the divine, will be used to test these claims made by both women. Despite the fact that they have each attracted significant academic interest over the years, this is the first work to bring these two thinkers into relation with each other. This thesis is divided into four distinct parts. Part I identifies the wider philosophical, existential and theological issues at play. Part II explores Weil's relation to and use of the concept of the `void' (that acts as an intermediary between the human and divine) both impersonally and personally in order to uncover her perception of the human situation in relation to God. In turn, Part III explores Rose's personal and intellectual vocation. More importantly, Rose's `broken middle' will be explored, which broadly speaking, addressesth e difficulty and tension (contradiction) of the middle between the universal and the particular. Part IV places the respective accounts of the human condition and contradiction in Weil's `void' and Rose's `broken middle' in explicit conversation with each other in order to establish and elucidate what they each separately and together suggest about the genesis of the search for salvation.

Abstract:

The focus of this thesis is to examine posts on library’s Facebook pages and to investigate possible connections between posts and user response. The study examines posts published from thirty different libraries Facebook pages over a two week period to examine if any correlation between different subjects or types of posts affects the degree and type of response from the users. The findings show that photos stand for the majority of the published post concerning its type and that activities at the library was the most common subject of posts. After using eta as measure of association a tenuous connection between degree of response and the posts subject and between the degree of response and the type of post was found. The standard deviation, however, was high in the majority of the variables used. The data also showed that posts containing videos had a very high mean of user response as did the subject culture news, although either of them constituted a sufficiently large part of the examined material in order to prove a connection. Previous research also supports the connection between posting of multimedia like videos and the engagement from the users.

This study is about social media and in what ways it can give expression for a need ofconfirmation, by the individuals who are using it. By using qualitative interviews on five users of social media, combined with exploiting theories in self-representation, behaviourism and Uses and Gratifications, it was possible to discover several kinds of need for confirmation. Thus, three strategies in self-representation was being used: a strategy mainly for attention, a strategy to reach a specific target group, and a strategy for general need of confirmation. Furthermore, information on how the users are aware of the mechanisms from social media is being showed and also how they make the most out of it. Eventually, after their need for confirmation had been examined, the users’ feelings were presented.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Morality and moral development are complex topics that may be important to social work, as it has been found that adolescents with antisocial behavior often has a lower moral level than other juveniles. It can therefore be argued that there is a need for moral interventions when different interventions are organized. The purpose of this study is to explore moral development in relation to the treatment program Aggression Replacement Training, how the components in moral skill training are meant to promote moral development in juvenile delinquents. A further aim is to examine how moral theories and ART can be understood from a gender perspective. Methods used in this study are scoping and directed content analysis. The results show that ART:s aim with moral training is to lead juveniles forward in their moral development. A combination of factors, both within and outside the treatment program affects the treatment outcome. Whether there is a need to adjust treatment to sex is unclear, thus it can be argued that there from a gender perspective may exist a need for more personalized treatment. The discussion illuminates a need to make a distinction between moral reasoning and moral action in treatment. Furthermore the discussion considers gender perspective in relation to gender role and socialization.

Abstract:
William Gillies Whittaker (1876-1944) was one of Britain's most influential musicians during the first half of the twentieth century. Though he is now sadly neglected, during his highly productive life his name was ubiquitous in almost every branch of indigenous music-making. This study seeks to explore in depth a musical life and achievement which has until now remained cursory in detail and lacking in critical appraisal. Since little is known of Whittaker's life, the first two chapters attempt to redress this balance by charting the direction in which Whittaker, an autodidact, forged his career. A man strongly linked with the North East of England (his unpublished Autobiography of a Provincial Musician accentuates this association), he did much to elevate music in Newcastle and the surrounding regions whether through folk-song arranging, school teaching, choir training, concert promotion, playing the organ, composing and as an academic lecturer. Before World War One, a period which might be described as his apprenticeship, he remained a provincial figure, but with the formation of the Newcastle Bach Choir in 1915, he was able to project his seminal interests in the music of J. S. Bach and the works of his contemporary compatriots. A close friendship with Hoist and other modern British composers located the Bach Choir at the cutting edge of new music and performances of Bach's choral works (which led to the posthumous publication of his pioneering The Cantatas of Johann Sebastian: Sacred and Secular in 1959) established his reputation on a national scale. Finding Newcastle too restrictive he eventually secured a newly-created appointment as Principal of the Scottish National Academy of Music and Professor of Music at Glasgow University, an appointment which, though productive, proved disappointing and embittering. As a national figure, galvanised by his work for the Bach Choir (see Chapter Three), Whittaker was engaged as the General Editor for Oxford University Press's newly-founded Educational Music Department through which his name became known in schools and choirs throughout the country and gave rise to germane publications such as The Oxford Orchestral Series, Oxford Songs from the Old Masters and The Clarendon Songbooks (See Chapters Four and Five). This and his position as a member of three Musical Advisory Committees for the newly inaugurated BBC allowed him to 'network' and befriend a large number of fellow musicians throughout the country, and his chauvinism on behalf of British music between the wars was well known for its pugnacity and single-mindedness, as can be measured by his leadership of the ISM in 1934 and the international exposure of his choral masterpiece Psalm 139 in Frankfurt. One further important facet of Whittaker's career was composition, for which he had no formal training. Encouragement from Hoist, who was not only a major stylistic influence but also believed in his abilities, gave rise to creative work, much of it shaped by practical circumstance. For schools there were simple unison and part-songs; for larger choruses there were fertile folksong arrangements and more extended canvases such as The Lyke-Wake Dirge, The Coelestial Sphere and Psalm 139; he was also prolific in the province of solo songs (where he was arguably most successful) and during his period at Glasgow he produced a substantial amount of Gebrauchsmusik; and he was a Carnegie winner for his piano quintet Among the Northumbrian Hills. Chapter Six seeks to explore the range of Whittaker's mainly unpublished output which acted as a process of catharsis during the many periods he spent abroad in Australia, America and mainland Europe

Abstract:
In our thesis we wanted to examine whether it was possible to realize a virtual function from the social network Facebook, and see if the initial purpose of the function would have the same result in the physical reality like as in the virtual world. Thus, we wanted to take anexisting Facebook feature and create a physical interpretation of it. We chose to create the Like button because we felt that the small function has a significant impact on and to the social network, but also because it’s increasingly being used in real situations such as for marketing purposes. Based on this, we created two physical prototypes, a lo-fi mockup version and a hi-fi prototype. The results showed that it was possible to create a physical form of a virtual Facebook function and the initial purpose was the same even in the physical world. However, the prototypes did not achieve the same results in the physical reality because it didn’t affect people's social behavior in the same way as in the social network.
