Abstract:
This essay looks at the intellectual relationship between author Angela Gilliam and Afro-Brazilian scholar-activist Abdias Nascimento. In 1968, both Gilliam and Nascimento were involved in self-examination and reinvention in terms of the positive affirmation of blackness and politicization of racial consciousness. This was a crucial time of social change and political struggle for equal rights to citizenship in Brazil and the United States. It was in her interpreter-translator work for Nascimento that Gilliam’s relationship to cultural and political expressions of peoples of African descent became deepened. This essay is a longer version of the lecture she delivered during the 2015 Abdias Nascimento symposium held at Brown for which she sent to us to include in this special issue before her passing in September 2018.

Abstract:
Don Quixote unfaithful: Counterculture of failureThe author analyzes the cultural status of the unfinished adaptations of Don Quixote of Miguel de Cervantes, which were worked on for years by Orson Welles 1955–1985 and Terry Gilliam 1991–2018. Although there are many films about the errant knight, these two projects still arouse interest of critics, viewers and filmmakers. Barbaruk initially puts these perplexing obsessions in the context of the idea of film maudit and the romanticism of interpretations of Don Quixote, but considers that only referring to modernity, which is the embodiment of the film industry, makes it understandable. In the unfinished projects of Welles and Gilliam the author sees the potential for self-creation and interpretation underlining of openness of Cervantes’s novel and the autonomy of its heroes and a counter-cultural, critical force aimed at contemporary finality.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The gene encoding the 56-kDa protein of Orientia tsutsugamushi Shanxi was amplified by a nested PCR and cloned into the expression vector pQE30. The 56-kDa protein of O. tsutsugamushi Shanxi (Sxh56) was expressed as a fusion protein with the His6-binding protein of Escherichia coli by deleting the signal peptide-encoding sequence from the 5′ end of the open reading frame. The recombinant protein formed inclusion bodies when expressed in E. coli M15. The recombinant protein was examined for reactivity with mouse sera against three antigenic prototypes of O. tsutsugamushi by an immunoblot assay. The recombinant Sxh56 reacted only to polyclonal antiserum to O. tsutsugamushi Gilliam in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and in an immunoblot assay. Recombinant Sxh56 was purified by Ni-nitrilotriacetic acid affinity chromatography and injected into mice to evaluate its ability to stimulate immune responses. High levels of immunoglobulin G and T-cell proliferation appeared in mice immunized with the recombinant protein. The recombinant Sxh56 was used in an ELISA to evaluate the ability of the method to detect antibodies to O. tsutsugamushi in human and animal sera. Thirty sera from mice infected with O. tsutsugamushi Gilliam or Shanxi and 55 sera from normal mice were detected in the ELISA with recombinant Sxh56, and the sensitivity and specificity were 96.67 and 100%, respectively. One hundred fifty-one positive sera and 412 negative sera to O. tsutsugamushi Gilliam were detected in an indirect immunofluorescence assay with the recombinant protein, and the sensitivity and specificity were 96.36 and 88.08%, respectively. These results strongly suggest that the recombinant Sxh56 is a suitable type-specific immunodiagnostic antigen and vaccine candidate.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We analyzed homotypic and heterotypic antibody responses to a type-specific antigen (Tsa), a 56-kDa protein of Orientia tsutsugamushi, by using sera from mice immunized with strains Gilliam, Karp, Kato, and Boryong. We generated a series of deletion constructs of the tsa gene and expressed them as MalE fusion proteins. Variable domain I (VD I) showed strong responses to homotypic antibodies. Antigenic domain II (AD II) from Boryong and Karp showed cross-reactivities to each other. VD III showed no responses to any of the antibodies. Sera from Kato-immunized mice showed only homotypic responses to AD III. On the other hand, sera of the mice immunized with Gilliam, Karp, or Boryong showed homotypic as well as heterotypic responses to this region. VD IV showed the strongest heterotypic antibody responses among the fragments tested. These data suggest that VD I is important in homotypic antibody responses and that AD II, AD III, and VD IV are important in heterotypic antibody responses of the mice to Tsa.

We consider the viscous Burgers' equation under recently proposed nonlinear boundary conditions and show that it guarantees global asymptotic stabilization and semiglobal exponential stabilization inH1sense. Our result is global in time and allows arbitrary size of initial data. It strengthens recent results by Byrnes, Gilliam, and Shubov, Ly, Mease, and Titi, and Ito and Yan. The global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions follows from the general theory of quasi-linear parabolic equations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Little is known about the validity of Gilliam Asperger's Disorder Scale (GADS), although it is widely used. This study of 199 children with high functioning autism or Asperger's Disorder, 195 with low functioning autism, and 83 with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) showed high classification accuracy (autism vs ADHD) for clinicians' GADS Quotients (92%), and somewhat lower accuracy (77%) for parents' Quotients. Both children with high and low functioning autism had clinicians' Quotients ( M = 99 and 101, respectively) similar to the Asperger's Disorder mean of 100 for the GADS normative sample. Children with high functioning autism scored significantly higher on the Cognitive Patterns subscale than children with low functioning autism, and the later had higher scores on the remaining subscales: Social Interaction, Restricted Patterns of Behavior, and Pragmatic Skills. Using the clinicians' Quotient and Cognitive Patterns score, 70% of children were correctly identified as having high or low functioning autism or ADHD.

Abstract:
Many studies of interracial differences in rates of political participation pay too little attention to African Americans' perceptions of whether they can freely participate in politics. Survey evidence collected over the last several decades has consistently shown that black Americans perceive much less political freedom available to them than do white Americans. The gap in perceived freedom has narrowed somewhat in recent years but remains large. Following the empowerment hypothesis of Lawrence Bobo and Franklin Gilliam, black perceptions of freedom increased with the election of Barack Obama to the American presidency. But perhaps unexpectedly, the empowerment bonus has not persisted, especially among conservative and fundamentalist blacks. Because African Americans do not perceive that their government would permit various types of political action, it is likely that substantial interracial differences exist in non-voting types of political participation, especially political action directed against governmental authority.

Scrub typhus, a chigger-borne febrile illness, occurs primarily in countries of the Asia-Pacific rim and islands of the Western Pacific. The etiologic agent is the obligate intracellular rickettsial bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi. Research on O. tsutsugamushi has relied on the availability of several prototype strains, which were isolated from human cases of scrub typhus in the 1940s and 1950s. We review the history of the three original, and most important, prototype strains, Gilliam, Karp and Kato, including information on their isolation, their culture history, their clinical characteristics, their importance within the research literature on scrub typhus, and recent advances in elucidating their molecular genomics. The importance of these strains to the research and development of clinical tools related to scrub typhus is also considered. Finally, we examine whether the strains have been genetically stable since their isolation, and whether prototype strains maintained in separate laboratories are identical, based on pairwise comparisons of several sequences from four genes. By using genetic information archived in international DNA databases, we show that the prototype strains used by different laboratories are essentially identical, and that the strains have retained their genetic integrity at least since the 1950s. The three original prototype strains should remain a standard by which new diagnostic procedures are measured. Given their fundamental position in any comparative studies, they are likely to endure as a critical part of present and future research on scrub typhus and Orientia.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Early screening and diagnosis of Autism spectrums is essential to determine the best means of early intervention program. Since there is no sign in biological for autism, screening and assessment must focus on the behavioral deficits. Somehow screening is not a diagnosis, but a filter that picks out children for subsequent assessment. The aim of this paper is to propose and to ignite discussion concerning robotic assisted in autism screening process to enable early diagnosis and intervention. This process combines (a) selection of an autism screening tool (b) refinement of screening subscales and (c) integration of subscales with robot action. We use Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2 (GARS-2) inversely integrated with humanoid robot Nao to produce a counter action to elicit individual behaviours for screening and diagnosis purposes. In extracting of GARS-2, we had considered the limitation and sensitivity when a robot tries to assist in the process of screening and diagnosis. Integrating robotics into innovative treatments however highlighted the need for additional rigorous empirical studies with quantitative measurement.
