Abstract:
AbstractBased on the comments of Giovanni Boccaccio and Giovanni Villani, a theory holds that Dante Alighieri may have studied philosophy and theology at Paris in 1309-1310. That same academic year, the Dominican bachelor of the Sentences at Paris, Giovanni Regina di Napoli (John of Naples), delivered a speech thanking a ‘Benefactor’. This Benefactor, neither a Dominican nor a theologian, gave the sole benefit of honoring Giovanni, the convent of Saint-Jacques, and the Dominican Order with his presence, attending Giovanni’s lectures on theology. This paper explores the likelihood that the Benefactor was Dante. An edition and an English translation of Giovanni’s speech are included in appendices.

Abstract:
Giovanni da Empoli, a Florentine agent and merchant, was among the first Europeans to travel by an exclusively maritime route to India. This article focuses on Giovanni’s first voyage to the East (1503–1504), during which he visited several ports along the Malabar coast. By examining Giovanni’s letter to his father, this contribution explores his (re)emerging identities, and in particular his mercantile outlook and his Christian faith, which suggest a diversity of value systems and agendas among ‘the Portuguese’. The experience of Giovanni is significant also because it represents an instance of production and transfer of knowledge about ‘the Indies’ in early Cinquecento Europe. As suggested by other contemporary sources concerning Giovanni, this circulation of knowledge did not take place only in writing, but also orally, in formal and informal conversations that Giovanni had with a variety of interested interlocutors both in Florence and elsewhere.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The essay analyses the Turkish mode in Mozart's output, discovering some unexpected examples, particularly Don Giovanni's aria ‘Fin ch'han dal vino’, whose uncommon sonority, obsessive rhythm and harmonic poverty evoke this topos. Don Giovanni may present Turkish features because his character coincides with eighteenth-century Western European views of the Turks as a threat to the established order and inclined to reckless sensuality. The romantic view of Don Giovanni as an ideal figure may also be connected with eighteenth-century thinking about ‘orientals’ as the representatives of utopia.

Abstract:
Book Summary:Offering a comprehensive view of the South's literary landscape, past and present, this volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture celebrates the region's ever-flourishing literary culture and recognizes the ongoing evolution of the southern literary canon. As new writers draw upon and reshape previous traditions, southern literature has broadened and deepened its connections not just to the American literary mainstream but also to world literatures--a development thoughtfully explored in the essays here. Greatly expanding the content of the literature section in the original Encyclopedia, this volume includes 31 thematic essays addressing major genres of literature; theoretical categories, such as regionalism, the southern gothic, and agrarianism; and themes in southern writing, such as food, religion, and sexuality. Most striking is the fivefold increase in the number of biographical entries, which introduce southern novelists, playwrights, poets, and critics. Special attention is given to contemporary writers and other individuals who have not been widely covered in previous scholarship.

Abstract:
. . ", published in Florence by Giorgio Vasari in 1550, is regarded as the first history of arts, and Vasari as the father of art historiography. In the 17th century, in Rome, two artists - Giovanni Blaglione and Giovanni Battista Passeri - and a writer - Giovanni Pietro Bellori - also wrote a collection focused on the lives of artists. These anthologies have been widely studied within the context of artistic literature and art history. They are regarded as informative documents and not as works of art. Our work is based on a different approach, a narrative one. We mainly take these works into consideration in a literary point of view. On the other hand, we will also compare the authors' conception of art history with the model of "Vite", in order to wonder if there is such a thing as a Vasarian heritage

Abstract:
In the history of scholarship on vernacular style, rhetoric, and prose rhythm, very little space has been given to 14th-century Tuscan short stories writers, such as Ser Giovanni, Franco Sacchetti, and Giovanni Sercambi. This article analyzes Ser Giovanni’s Pecorone with the aim of individuating stylistic, rhetorical, and rhythmic elements and of understanding their relationship with its model, Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron. Although Ser Giovanni did not have a direct knowledge of the artes dictaminis, the article shows how his deep reading of Boccaccio’s Decameron permitted him to recognize and put to use many of the rhetorical expedients he found in it.

Abstract:
In this essay the author demonstrates that it is possible to “reconstruct” the figure of Caterina Colombini (1340?-1387) – Giovanni Colombini’s cousin – through a group of texts: the hagiography of Caterina, the letters sent to her by Giovanni Colombini and, finally, Giovanni’s biography written by Feo Belcari. The author divides his text into four parts: the first part analyzes the content of Caterina’s hagiography; the second examines the linguistic form of the hagiographic text; in the third, the author analyzes the latent meaning of the window, a symbolic place where Giovanni and Caterina converse on divine topics; in the last part, to conclude, the teachings that Giovanni gives to Catherine and her spiritual daughters – the Gesuate – are analyzed.

Abstract:

The history of Civil Engineering in XXI century as well as the history of dams is still to be written. We could certainly begin with the eminent Swiss engineer Giovanni Lombardi (1926-2017), a genius in the field of structural engineering and tunnel construction. He built many “cathedrals of energy” around the world: dams or hydroelectric power stations, introducing innovative solutions in design and calculation. This progress was linked to economic and social pressures of the same period, including the energy (oil) crisis and the need to increase the dam’s reservoirs. His main structures are Muttsee dam (CH), Zeuzier dam (CH), Contra dam (CH), Zimapan dam (MX) and also railway and road tunnels (Gotthard, Gibraltar). This paper aims to outline the history of Giovanni Lombardi through his pioneering mind, his scientific contribution, and technical innovation in a Swiss and global context, highlighting how his engineering can be considered an art.

Abstract:
The libretto of Cavalleria rusticana, the well-known opera by Pietro Mascagni, was written by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, who reduced to melodrama a play by Giovanni Verga, in its turn a dramatization of a short-story with the same title he had previously written. Our investigation focuses on the libretto as a literary text to be analysed in comparison with its prose sources. We propose an in-depth analysis of the similarities and differences between the libretto and the play, in an attempt to understand the reasons for the changes operated by the two librettists. The necessities of the melodramatic genre and their non-Sicilian origin lead to a diverse comprehension and interpretation of Vergas ideas, freely transposed into the libretto. The achievements of the two librettists are not to be ignored, especially if taking into account they were the first in Italy to propose an unconventional subject inspired from the real life of the petty people. Despite the criticism against some of their solutions, we could notice that their choices concerning the literary style, the language, the construction of the characters led to a new perspective and convey a more universal meaning that has assured the success of the opera in time.

Quak, Evert-jan. Implementation Obstacles and Political Appeal of Environmental Taxes in Sub-Saharan Africa: Reflections from Selected Countries. Institute of Development Studies, July 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2024.079.

Full text
Abstract:
Low-income countries (LICs) are looking at the potential of environmental taxes – such as charges on air pollutants, levies on household waste, and taxes on energy use – to increase revenue and tackle environmental issues. LICs are slow to adopt environmental taxes, and international financial institutions, multilateral development banks, and international donors are helping LIC governments assess them. Little is known about the institutional, administrative, and political obstacles leading to slow adoption of environmental taxes, and how these taxes can be made more appealing, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This paper reports evidence from 16 in-depth interviews with ministries of finance, revenue authorities, and other government stakeholders in six African countries. One key obstacle is the competing mandates and revenue-raising capacity of different ministries and agencies. There is concern that granting institutions new capacity to raise revenue might lead to meeting revenue targets being prioritised over conserving environmental resources. As a result, the public, politicians, and businesses may resist these policies being introduced. Summary of ICTD Working Paper 177 written by Giovanni Occhiali.
