This research project has two main objectives. (i) First, its aim is to study a realist solution to the problem of universals from the early 12th century. This is called the indiuiduum-theory (=IndT; previous denominations include: indifference-theory, status-theory, second collectio-theory, etc.). IndT claims the universal to be a thing (res); in fact, it claims the universal to be the individual thing itself in one of its states (status). It makes use of some key notions of Abelard’s philosophy to produce a remarkably non-Abelardian sort of solution. The thesis subjects IndT to scrutiny by taking into consideration five main sources (which either describe it in order to criticise it, or in order to support it). They are: Abelard'€™s Logica "€˜Ingredientibus"€™, Logica "€˜Nostrorum"€™, "€˜De generibus et speciebus'€™ (transcribed directly from ms. Orléans, Bibliothèque Municipale, 266, pp. 154b-163a), "€˜Quoniam de generali"€™ and the Isagoge Commentary "€˜P17"€™ (from ms. Paris, BnF, lat. 3237, ff. 123ra/€“124va, 125ra/€“130rb). Not only IndT, but the whole description of realism found in these texts is investigated. This includes an analysis of other realist views (different versions of material essence realism; the collectio-theory; a third realist solution in the Logica "€˜Nostrorum"€™) together with a catalogue and detailed analysis of the seventy-eight arguments presented against such realist views to be found in the five sources. (ii) A second aim of this work is to investigate whether IndT can be attributed to Walter of Mortagne, who was a master in Reims and Laon in the first decades of the 12th century. The attribution, which is based on John of Salisbury'€™s testimony in Metalogicon II, 17, is to be compared with John’s Policraticus.
La ricerca che si è svolta comporta due aspetti principali. (i) In primo luogo, la tesi prende in esame una soluzione realista al problema degli universali avanzata all’inizio del XII secolo, per la quale si propone la denominazione "€˜teoria dell'€™indiuiduum"€™ (= Tind; in precedenza designata come "€˜teoria dell'€™indifferenza"€™, "€˜teoria degli status"€™, "€˜seconda teoria della collectio"€™, etc.). Tale teoria sostiene che l'€™universale è l'€™individuo stesso in uno dei suoi status; la posizione, inoltre, fa propri elementi abelardiani all'€™interno di una prospettiva del tutto opposta a quella del maestro palatino. Tind viene indagata nella tesi all'€™interno di un più ampio studio delle soluzioni realiste al problema degli universali presentate da cinque fonti: la Logica ‘Ingredientibus’ di Abelardo, la Logica "€˜Nostrorum"€™, i trattati "€˜De generibus et speciebus"€™ (citato direttamente dal ms. Orléans, Bibliothèque Municipale, 266, pp. 154b-163a) e "€˜Quoniam de generali"€™, e il commento "€˜P17"€™ all'€™Isagoge del ms. Paris, BnF, lat. 3237, ff. 123ra/€“124va, 125ra/130rb. La ricerca considera l'€™insieme delle teorie realiste descritte da tali fonti (ossia, Tind, la teoria dell'€™essenza materiale e una sua variante, la teoria della collectio e una terza soluzione criticata nella Logica "€˜Nostrorum"€™), così come i 78 sollevati contro il realismo nei testi citati, che vengono qui catalogati e analizzati in dettaglio. (ii) Il lavoro esamina poi la legittimità  dell'€™attribuzione di Tind a Gualtiero di Mortagne, maestro a Reims e Laon nei primi decenni del secolo, e di cui si presentano la vita e le opere. L'€™attribuzione si fonda in particolare sulla testimonianza del Metalogicon (II, 17) di Giovanni di Salisbury.
