Full textL'Imerio by Giovanni Testori is a drama that has been rewritten several times and has remained unpublished because it was never considered concluded. Through a research work conducted at the Testori Archive in Milan, an attempt was made to reconstruct the path of inexhaustible revision that led the author to draw up 18 drafts, before definitively abandoning the project, in an artistic phase following the The scandal of L'Arialda, for some time considered a suspension of his theatrical writing, which anticipates, by themes and dramaturgical solutions, the works that will mark the definitive abandonment of the neorealistic phase, starting with La Monaca di Monza.

Full textThe renowned tendency of Giovanni Testori to shape the writing process on certain actors or even, in some cases, on predetermined theatre companies, is the starting point of this work, which sets out to examine Testori’s theatre texts looking at the historical context that surrounded him, rather than reducing the analysis on his mere final scripts. Furthermore, keeping in mind his theoretical statements on the importance of the voice of the actor while conceiving a text, this work examines the vocal element as the reading key of Testori’s theatre, combining language analysis and critical feedbacks. Dividing Testori’s corpus chronologically in three parts, this work adopts a ”historical- critical” approach and offers some “case studies”: a selection of plays, within each of the three fases, to be looked at closely in such a way to rebuild the original theatrical happening. The first remarkable case is represented by Le Lombarde, performed in 1950 and written in the same year; its script, considered lost for many years, was recovered in February 2016 after an interview with Gianfranco De Bosio: his analysis offers a more complete framework on Testori’s works, particularly on his early works, which this essay examines in order to rebuild the context in which the artist was operating. Because a “stage/performative” perspective was needed, this play and the other case studies will undergo a historical analysis of the shows that will consider also the material regarding the staging of the shows (critics feedback, pictures, posters, leaflets of presentation), collected thanks to an archive research, the writer’s point of view (theoretical statements) and the interviews with people that worked with him.

Full textThe thesis proposes a monographic study on the Florentine Giovan Battista Strozzi the Younger also known as the Blind (1551-1634). He was a writer with connections in cultural circles across Renaissance Italy, including Medici’s Florence, Barberini’s Rome, Borromean Milan and the Roman cenacles of the Aldobrandini and the Humorists. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter focuses on the participation of Strozzi the Younger in the activities of two lively groups in his hometown: the Florentine Academy and the Alterati Academy. The second chapter discusses his poetical works – for the most part still unpublished –, including dozens of versified epistles in loose hendecasyllables, an unfinished poem in honor of Amerigo Vespucci, as well as a rich corpus of madrigals. The drafting of this last corpus proceeded together with Strozzi the Younger’s theoretical speculation around the new sixteenth-century appearance of this ancient lyrical genre. The third section considers the contribution of Strozzi the Younger to the discussions on poetics (Dante’s ‘Comedy’, the heroic poem, the Aristotelian units) that went on in Italian literary circles in the second half of the sixteenth century. In this work, we aimed to restore the appropriate historical depth to each of the writings examined, through the exegesis of texts combined with the biographical reconstruction conducted on a large number of published and unpublished epistolary documents. We also tried to reconstruct the different cultural contexts in which these writings were composed and attempted to analyze the dense network of relationships, both human and literary, that loomed in the background. The thesis is completed by a bibliography of ancient and modern works, an index of manuscripts and an index of names.

Granata, Daniele. "Pensiero e linguaggio dell'essere nel Commentario di Giovanni Filopono alle categorie di Aristotele. Introduzione, testo, traduzione e commento." Doctoral thesis, Universita degli studi di Salerno, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10556/2345.
Full textThis work’s goal is not only to detect the originality of the philoponian Commentary on Aristotle’s Categories, but also to show that logic is an autonomous discipline which studies the reality of being as practical and theoretical sciences do. First of all I proposed the text of the Commentary according to Busse’s edition of 1898, introduced by an editorial note, explaining that the text published has been followed faithfully, except for some interventions reported in footnotes, interventions flowing from the critical apparatus of Busse himself or aiming to correct typographical errors and oversights. The translation’s goal is mainly to prepare the ground for its detailed exegesis. The text’s reading shows that Philoponus’ In Categorias is a personal elaboration of the scholastic tradition in the light of the Commentator’s methodical brilliance, that stands out from Ammonius for theoretical breadth and depth, as well as for accuracy of certain considerations. Categories are shown not only as a logical text but also as a systematic tool of great importance. Philoponus shows that all disciplines, theoretical and practical, are closely related to logic, by which philosophers discern truth from falsehood and right from wrong. This thesis allow you to observe carefully in Philoponus’s treaty all interdisciplinary relationships, digressions and theoretical insights in support of this theory. The study of pre-propositional logic has as object simple beings signified by simple words through simple thoughts: homological correspondence between these three planes of reality is the foundation of Aristotle’s philosophy and of Philoponus’ recovery. Aristotle, this is clear from the Commentary, was, according to Philoponus, a platonic, among the best disciples of the Master. [edited by Author]

Full textThe aim of this Doctoral work is double: (a) to offer the complete edition of three important distinctiones – the second, the third and the eighth – coming from the Sentence Commentary of the Franciscan John of Ripa, who lectured in Paris in the period 1354-1358. These three distinctiones constitute a homogeneous group of questions dealing with the metaphysical issues of the existence and nature of God (immensitas) in its distinction from the nature of created beings (infinitas/finitas), together with the original mechanism called replicatio unitatis divinae which regulates the generation of all created beings [Distinctio 2], the analogy between God and creatures, with the lucid restriction – consciously elaborated after Duns Scotus – of the univocity in the sole created domain [Distinctio 3], and the formal distinction between all the perfectiones originally contained in the divine essence, which do not introduce any form of multiplicity in the Unity of the supersimplex (immensa) divine essence [Distinctio 8]; (b) to offer an elaborated study of the themes present in these distinctiones, not only regarding to Ripa’s thought, but also through the analysis of related philosophical perspectives (Hugolinus of Orvieto, Pierre Ceffons, John of Mirecourt, Francis de Mayronis, Francis of Appignano, Gregory of Rimini and William of Ockham). This duplex intent is reflected in the two volumes which compose this thesis, which aims to discover the thought of a long-time underestimated philosopher. [edited by author]

Full textThe present research focuses on the reception of the fabulæ of Hero and Leander and of Pyramus and Thisbe in Seventeenth-century Italian literature, in particular in four texts differing by genre, style and geographical origin: the idyll of Giovanni Capponi, Gli amori infelici di Ero e Leandro (1618); the ‘favola maritima’ Hero e Leandro (1630) and the ‘lieta favola’ La Tisbe by Francesco Bracciolini; and the ‘dramma per musica’ Il Leandro by Badovero-Pistocchi (1679). The decision to place the two myths in close relationship with each other was inspired by some remarks found in authoritative historical-philological studies on the origin of the ancient Greek novel and the Greek novella (Rodhe 1876, Lavagnini 1921, Cataudella 1957) where the two fabulæ are cited as examples of proto-novels for the insistent recurrence in them of topoi proper to the Hellenic novel. Starting from an accurate thematic-rhetorical analysis of the 'common heritage', or rather, of the 'Hellenic-romance nucleus' belonging to the classic versions of reference (Mus.; Ov., Her. 18-19; Ov. Met., IV, 55-166), the course of the research in modern rewritings in question follows three main coordinates: verification of the idea of correspondence between the two myths, already found in the ancient, medieval and Renaissance versions, and identification of the ways in which it is expressed in seventeenth-century texts; analysis of the processes of rewriting the myth within the new Baroque metamorphoses and the new stage hybrids, both in reference to the interaction between the 'Hellenic-romance nucleus', tragic inheritance and influences of the idyllic and pastoral genre, as well as in regard to the relationship between Hellenic and Baroque romance; focus on the hermeneutic aspect within which to read the new meaning assumed by the myth: clementia or sententia for the two couples of lovers?
