Abstract:
This thesis countains the traduction of an important book, vecchie citta ed edilizia nuova, 300 pages, published in 1931, written by gustavo giovannoni, an italian engineer, architect and art historian. A tho rough analysis of the urbanistic terminology of gustavo giovannoni points out the differencies between french and italian town-planning approach and stresses the originality and the complexityof gustavo giovannoni concepts

Abstract:
The conservation of urban heritage finds, in this thesis, aspects of its legal genesis in Italy. Through dialogue with the historiography dedicated to the work of Gustavo Giovanonni, the thesis touches on the important contributions this influential engineer had on the introduction of the idea of \"ambiente\" in laws protecting cultural heritage in the country in the period between the first and second world wars, including those concerning so-called \"natural and panoramic beauties\". Through the interpretation of ideas and expressions used by Giovannoni, such as \"ambiente of monuments\", \"traditional ambiente of sites\" and \"the complex of immovable objects which form an appearance of aesthetic and traditional value\", we can see clearly that he was a key figure in widening the scope of protection laws in his country, taking it beyond that concerning isolated monuments as well as introducing legislation concerning important measures to be used in the area of urban conservation such as a master plan. During this process we can identify a great coherence between the work of Giovannoni as ministerial consultant and that of Giovannoni creator of laws, as well as the practical and theoretic Giovannoni in overlapping areas, such as those today defined as urban design, urban planning and urban conservation. The intention of this work is to use a historiographical approach which contemplates this man whilst respecting the complexity of his work.

Abstract:

Abstract:
BALDONI, CLAUDIO. "L'architettura di Luciano Giovannini (1924-1993)." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2108/1399.

Full text
Abstract:
Luciano Giovannini (b. Frascati 1924 – d. Rome 1993) took his degree in Architecture at Rome University “La Sapienza” in 1951. We have some plates left from the period he studied at the University, which represent some Villas of the Tusculum district, where an early aptitude to understand an architectural organism and to express this comprehension in the graphical ways which are peculiar of an architect is made evident. Soon after his degree Giovannini, due to his relationship with Ludovico Quaroni, established in Ivrea where he worked with the GTCUC (Technical Group for the Planning Coordination of the Canavese) at the production of the Masterplans for the Municipality of Ivrea and for the whole area of the Canavese. In this period the members of the Group travelled to Scandinavian countries and to Great Britain to study the planning methods and the architecture. Although the plans which were produced by the GTCUC were never applied, this experience was a model for Urban Planning in Italy also because of the number and of the high quality of the preliminary researches which had been produced. Giovannini later worked for the Olivetti Society projecting several buildings in Ivrea (some of these buildings are today a part of the MAAM, Museum of the Modern Architecture of Ivrea) and in other places (such as the Center of the “Comunità” Movement in Terracina, that is today the seat of the Library of the Municipality of this town). At the same time, Giovannini began to collaborate with Quaroni in various assignments (among which the S. Giusto district near Prato) and in the projects for several competitions (as the famous one made in the 1959 for the CEP District at the Barene of S. Giuliano near Venice). Giovannini, in the Fifties and the Sixties of the last Century, projected as well, individually or collaborating with some other architects which were related to Quaroni, various important buildings; some of these have been appreciated by influential critics such as Bruno Zevi and have been published on various periodicals (the Faculty of Pharmacological Chemistry of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, the Giuseppina Saragat Foundation at Anzio, the Central Seat of the University of Macerata). In the next period, Giovannini’s activity took mainly place in Turkey, where, as a Consultant to the Turkish Government, he projected several environmental and touristic development plans, coordinating also, as a General Editor, a book concerning the Art of Cappadocia with the collaboration of several experts of various nationalities. In Turkey Giovannini also built the Tourist Village of Kemer and the Apostolic Nunciature in Ankara. In the following period, he continued his work in Italy (building some touristic structures and collaborating also to important projects for public housing) as well as in various Arabian Countries, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrein. The study of Giovannini’s work, based on one side on a bibliographical research, and on the other side on unpublished files which his family kindly put at our disposal, allows us to go, although from a very particular point of view, along four decades of the Italian architecture in the XX century.

Abstract:
Book Summary:Offering a comprehensive view of the South's literary landscape, past and present, this volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture celebrates the region's ever-flourishing literary culture and recognizes the ongoing evolution of the southern literary canon. As new writers draw upon and reshape previous traditions, southern literature has broadened and deepened its connections not just to the American literary mainstream but also to world literatures--a development thoughtfully explored in the essays here. Greatly expanding the content of the literature section in the original Encyclopedia, this volume includes 31 thematic essays addressing major genres of literature; theoretical categories, such as regionalism, the southern gothic, and agrarianism; and themes in southern writing, such as food, religion, and sexuality. Most striking is the fivefold increase in the number of biographical entries, which introduce southern novelists, playwrights, poets, and critics. Special attention is given to contemporary writers and other individuals who have not been widely covered in previous scholarship.

Abstract:
. . ", published in Florence by Giorgio Vasari in 1550, is regarded as the first history of arts, and Vasari as the father of art historiography. In the 17th century, in Rome, two artists - Giovanni Blaglione and Giovanni Battista Passeri - and a writer - Giovanni Pietro Bellori - also wrote a collection focused on the lives of artists. These anthologies have been widely studied within the context of artistic literature and art history. They are regarded as informative documents and not as works of art. Our work is based on a different approach, a narrative one. We mainly take these works into consideration in a literary point of view. On the other hand, we will also compare the authors' conception of art history with the model of "Vite", in order to wonder if there is such a thing as a Vasarian heritage

Tripoli town plan (1930-1936). The consciousness of the pastThe paper recalls the well known urban facts of Tripoli during the Italian colonialism to eventually deepen the theme of the preservation of the past and not only of the Roman one, as well of the city walls. The town plan has been analyzed not only as it has been approved but also as it has been argued, not only through the drawings but also by the debate. A few letters between the professionals involved (especially Alberto Alpago Novello) and some authoritative exponents of the contemporary architecture culture and criticism (like, Gustavo Giovannoni) have assured an original source to underlines the critical background and to reveal a purpose of touristic and commercial development.

Abstract:
The present study focuses on the numerical analysis of the combustion process occurring in a small scale cylindrical combustion chamber using a commercial computational code. The chosen diameter is 18 mm, being the same as the flat flame regenerative combustor currently under experimental investigation by the author (Giovannoni), and it includes a 10 mm thick porous flame holder and a 1 mm thick stainless steel outer wall. A 17 species and 73 reactions skeletal mechanism related to methane oxidation is employed for the simulations. A parametric study is performed and results in terms of temperature profiles, major species’ concentrations and flow velocities are presented. Results show that the flame holder can considerably affect combustion and heat losses from the combustor. In particular at low flow rates, when the laminar burning velocity is much higher than the flow velocity, heat is lost mainly through the flame holder to the walls and to the surroundings. At high flow rates the flame appears to be slightly lifted from the porous medium and heat is mainly dispersed to the walls. This causes preheating of the mixture upstream of the combustion through axial conduction in the wall, achieving superadiabatic temperature. It is also clear from the simulations that employing a flame holder with low thermal conductivity and high porosity yields benefits in limiting heat losses and in widening flammability limits.

Abstract:
In recent years much has been written and exhibited regarding Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian/Brazilian architect (1914-1992). This paper aims to look at the phenomenon of cultural displacement and the dissemination of her design thinking as a major female figure in a male dominated profession. This investigation is distinguished from others in that it addresses the importance of regional and cultural influences that formed Lina’s design philosophy in her early years in Italy. Cultural displacement has long played a significant role in the creative process for artists. Often major innovators in literature are immigrants as elements of strangeness, distance, and alienation all contribute to their creativity. The premise is that critical distance is paramount for reflection as a change of context unfolds unforeseen possibilities. Displacement was a consistent element throughout the trajectory of Lina’s architectural career as she moved from Rome to Milan, from Milan to Sao Paolo from Sao Paolo to Bahia and back to Sao Paolo. Viewing this form of detachment and dislocation permits insight into her career and body of work as displacement mediates the paradoxical relationship between time and space. The paper will examine three distinct periods in her career. The first period is set in Rome, where she assimilated the city, showed artistic aptitude and spent her university years studying under Piacentiniand Giovannoni. The second period is set in Milan, where she developed impressive editorial and layout skills in publications work with Gio Ponti and BrunoZevi. and was influenced by Antonio Gramsci’s writings. The third is set in Brazil, where she builds and evolves as an architect via what she absorbed in Rome, wrote in Milan, and finally realized in Brazil. After Italy’s collapse in WWII Lina writes, draws, edits, critiques the plight of the Italians in need of better housing and circumstances. She leaves Milan with her new husband, PM Bardi (a prominent journalist, art critic) for Brazil. In Sao Paolo she absorbs the optimism and positive direction of Brazil. Her early design work in Brazil echoes European modernism, but when she travels to Bahia and becomes aware of the social conditions, she draws from her Italian experiences of and ideas of transforming lives through craft. Her architectural projects become directly responsive to the culture of Bahia and the politics of poverty. Lina’s design thinking evolves and parallels George Kubler’s study, The Shape of Time, and the history of man-made objects by bridging the divide between art and material culture.

Abstract:

The history of Civil Engineering in XXI century as well as the history of dams is still to be written. We could certainly begin with the eminent Swiss engineer Giovanni Lombardi (1926-2017), a genius in the field of structural engineering and tunnel construction. He built many “cathedrals of energy” around the world: dams or hydroelectric power stations, introducing innovative solutions in design and calculation. This progress was linked to economic and social pressures of the same period, including the energy (oil) crisis and the need to increase the dam’s reservoirs. His main structures are Muttsee dam (CH), Zeuzier dam (CH), Contra dam (CH), Zimapan dam (MX) and also railway and road tunnels (Gotthard, Gibraltar). This paper aims to outline the history of Giovanni Lombardi through his pioneering mind, his scientific contribution, and technical innovation in a Swiss and global context, highlighting how his engineering can be considered an art.
