Full textThe conservation of urban heritage finds, in this thesis, aspects of its legal genesis in Italy. Through dialogue with the historiography dedicated to the work of Gustavo Giovanonni, the thesis touches on the important contributions this influential engineer had on the introduction of the idea of \"ambiente\" in laws protecting cultural heritage in the country in the period between the first and second world wars, including those concerning so-called \"natural and panoramic beauties\". Through the interpretation of ideas and expressions used by Giovannoni, such as \"ambiente of monuments\", \"traditional ambiente of sites\" and \"the complex of immovable objects which form an appearance of aesthetic and traditional value\", we can see clearly that he was a key figure in widening the scope of protection laws in his country, taking it beyond that concerning isolated monuments as well as introducing legislation concerning important measures to be used in the area of urban conservation such as a master plan. During this process we can identify a great coherence between the work of Giovannoni as ministerial consultant and that of Giovannoni creator of laws, as well as the practical and theoretic Giovannoni in overlapping areas, such as those today defined as urban design, urban planning and urban conservation. The intention of this work is to use a historiographical approach which contemplates this man whilst respecting the complexity of his work.

Full textLuciano Giovannini (b. Frascati 1924 – d. Rome 1993) took his degree in Architecture at Rome University “La Sapienza” in 1951. We have some plates left from the period he studied at the University, which represent some Villas of the Tusculum district, where an early aptitude to understand an architectural organism and to express this comprehension in the graphical ways which are peculiar of an architect is made evident. Soon after his degree Giovannini, due to his relationship with Ludovico Quaroni, established in Ivrea where he worked with the GTCUC (Technical Group for the Planning Coordination of the Canavese) at the production of the Masterplans for the Municipality of Ivrea and for the whole area of the Canavese. In this period the members of the Group travelled to Scandinavian countries and to Great Britain to study the planning methods and the architecture. Although the plans which were produced by the GTCUC were never applied, this experience was a model for Urban Planning in Italy also because of the number and of the high quality of the preliminary researches which had been produced. Giovannini later worked for the Olivetti Society projecting several buildings in Ivrea (some of these buildings are today a part of the MAAM, Museum of the Modern Architecture of Ivrea) and in other places (such as the Center of the “Comunità” Movement in Terracina, that is today the seat of the Library of the Municipality of this town). At the same time, Giovannini began to collaborate with Quaroni in various assignments (among which the S. Giusto district near Prato) and in the projects for several competitions (as the famous one made in the 1959 for the CEP District at the Barene of S. Giuliano near Venice). Giovannini, in the Fifties and the Sixties of the last Century, projected as well, individually or collaborating with some other architects which were related to Quaroni, various important buildings; some of these have been appreciated by influential critics such as Bruno Zevi and have been published on various periodicals (the Faculty of Pharmacological Chemistry of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, the Giuseppina Saragat Foundation at Anzio, the Central Seat of the University of Macerata). In the next period, Giovannini’s activity took mainly place in Turkey, where, as a Consultant to the Turkish Government, he projected several environmental and touristic development plans, coordinating also, as a General Editor, a book concerning the Art of Cappadocia with the collaboration of several experts of various nationalities. In Turkey Giovannini also built the Tourist Village of Kemer and the Apostolic Nunciature in Ankara. In the following period, he continued his work in Italy (building some touristic structures and collaborating also to important projects for public housing) as well as in various Arabian Countries, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrein. The study of Giovannini’s work, based on one side on a bibliographical research, and on the other side on unpublished files which his family kindly put at our disposal, allows us to go, although from a very particular point of view, along four decades of the Italian architecture in the XX century.

Full text"Vite de' più eccellenti architetti, pittori, et scultori italiani. . . ", published in Florence by Giorgio Vasari in 1550, is regarded as the first history of arts, and Vasari as the father of art historiography. In the 17th century, in Rome, two artists - Giovanni Blaglione and Giovanni Battista Passeri - and a writer - Giovanni Pietro Bellori - also wrote a collection focused on the lives of artists. These anthologies have been widely studied within the context of artistic literature and art history. They are regarded as informative documents and not as works of art. Our work is based on a different approach, a narrative one. We mainly take these works into consideration in a literary point of view. On the other hand, we will also compare the authors' conception of art history with the model of "Vite", in order to wonder if there is such a thing as a Vasarian heritage

Full textThis research work - a phd thesis in co-supervision between the "Sapienza" University of Rome and the University of Paris 1 "Panthéon-Sorbonne" - was born with the aim of shedding light on the life and work of the architect Giovanni Niccolo Servandoni, one of the most emblematic figures and less-known artist of the eighteenth century. At the same time he was painter, architect and decorator and his name was famous thanks to a large number of sets made for the Opéra and to the design of the façade of the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. During his life, Servandoni had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, where he worked for the major courts of that time, from Paris to London, from Lisbon to Brussels, Vienna, Dresden and Stuttgart. The research work has the objective to investigating especially the lesser-known aspects of the architect's life, like as the period of his training in Florence and Rome, the years where he lived in England before his arrival in Paris in 1724, his travels in Europe and his architectural work as well as the site of Saint-Sulpice, both in France and abroad. Thanks to this research, Servandoni's complete work- so vaguely interpreted as an anticipation of the "goût à la grecque" and the revival of the classicism of the late of eighteenth century - is reinterpreted as the result of his training in Italy and England. It is indebted, in fact, that as well the classicism that characterized the Florentine architecture of that period as his close contact with the English Palladian circle and with the Wren, Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor's works, exercised a great influence on him
Full textThis dissertation aims to investigate the most relevant passages of Myrmedon, focusing on the analyse of a not well-known poem of Giovanni Pascoli. Moving from an overview of the theme of memory in Pascoli, linked with the motif of phylogenetic memory, the INTRODUCTION, in five chapters, reconstructs the theoretical assumptions and the artistic purposes of Myrmedon, and separates the interpretation of this poem from the exegesis of Pecudes and Canis (all this poems are part of the Ruralia). The most substantial source of Myrmedon is Virgil’s Georgics (4, 1-115; 149-280); this point has been analyzed in the fourth chapter. Finally, the introduction explains the poem’s greek title and the inscription. This section is followed by TESTO E TRADUZIONE, and then by six chapters dedicated to a close reading of the vv. 1-14 (6 PROTASI); 22-32 (7 I CARUSI SICILIANI); 33-40 (8 LA VISTA DELLE FORMICHE); 225-238 (9 SCHIAVE); 261-290, 65-75 and 223-224 (10 ANCORA SUL LESSICO DEL MYRMEDON); 301-312 (11 NOZZE). These chapters contain a specific introduction about the motives and peculiarities of the sections, and a wide commentary on: formal aspects, biographical notice, and psychological, theoretical, intertextual influences of the poem. The final chapter (ASPETTI STILISTICI E FIGURATIVI DEL MYRMEDON) analyzes some fragments of the poem clearly linked to impressionistic tendencies and to the fin de siècle decorativism (Myrm. 61-64 and 97-99). A particular attention has also been given to phonosymbolic phenomena and to the more expressive and frequent hexametric formulas. [edited by Author]

Full textDespite the remarkable variety of hypotheses advanced concerning the relationship between John and Jesus, scholars have always been at one in maintaining that – whatever the formative influence exerted by John – Jesus’ ministry was something essentially new, different, independent and original in respect to John’s activity. Departing from this universally assumed “default setting”, the present study argues the likelihood that Jesus rather conceived his task in terms of carrying forward John’s interrupted work towards the reform and renewal of Israel. Firstly, the oldest historical accounts, like Q (which receives special attention here) and Mark – to which one may also add Matthew’s creatively faithful development of “his” Q tradition – show extensive patterns of agreement, conformity and similarity between the two characters, a fact that, by itself, should give one pause regarding the adequacy of the standard “default setting”. Secondly, there is evidence enough in the tradition that Jesus was publicly perceived in relation to John, and that he himself shared and promoted this view as he used to link himself with John when arguing in public with his opponents, as well as he openly exalted John’s utmost significance both in his public preaching and in the more esoteric teaching to his disciples. Thirdly, there are substantial and extensive agreements between the two in terms of eschatological perspective, moral instructions, social program, commitment to the repentance of sinners, and baptismal practice as well. It seems that Jesus’ aim was to accomplish John’s very task of preparing a wholly purified, sanctified and socially restored people in preparation of God’s imminent coming in his kingdom. According to this proposal, healing and exorcisms were an integral part of this restorative, eschatologically minded and future oriented purification-campaign – thereby allowing for a more consistent and satisfying picture of the historical Jesus.

This new consciousness of the situation leads him to take part in the resistance movement and then to renounce his role as the manager designate of his father's company. At the end of the war, he dedicates himself to history, literature and publishing. In particular, he edits, with piero malvezzi, two collections of letters that resistance fighters sentenced to death wrote before they were shot. Besides his work as an historian, pirelli writes fiction about world war ii, the resistance movement and the industrial society. He also becomes a member of the socialist party and takes part in several theoretical reviews and publishing companies. Through a vast number of initiatives, he carries out a political, moral and literary research, reslated to the events and cultural problems of italy from the war to the beginning of the seventies

Full textThe thesis is about Giovanni Iacopo Dionisi (1734-1808), canon of Verona’s cathedral and librarian of the Biblioteca Capitolare, known as one “of the most well-deserving man of the Dante studies, […] at the end of the previous century, the beginner of a new criticism on the poet’s works” (G. Carducci). Dionisi’s books, i.e. the eight “Aneddoti”, the "Preparazione istorica e critica alla nuova edizione di Dante Allighieri" (full of exegetic and textual hints about Dante’s works), and his edition of Dante’s “Commedia” (published by Bodoni in 1795), are for the first time analysed with the point of view of modern Dante criticism. The controversy between Dionisi and Baldassarre Lombardi, editor of the “Commedia” in 1791, is taken in account as well. My thesis proves that Dionisi solved many difficult textual points in Dante’s works, so that many are the readings proposed by Dionisi you can find also in Petrocchi’s edition of the “Commedia” and in Brambilla Ageno’s edition of the “Convivio”, as is shown in a table in the thesis’ appendix, where the reader also finds seven unpublished Dionisi letters to Bartolomeo Perazzini, parish priest of Soave and fond of Dante, and twenty-one extracts from other letters between the two, that show how tight was the collaboration between the two scholars.

Full textThe present thesis studies the literary work of Guareschi to then arrive at the great fortune he had in the world of cinema. Guareschi was able to do a particular artistic training, thanks to collaborations with various newspapers, and magazines. Returning from the concentration camp, Guareschi again felt responsible for his homeland, therefore, founded "Candido", he effectively contributed to defend personal freedom as an indispensable way for every true "reconstruction". He therefore saw in Communism an evil to be avoided, because it, according to Guareschi, tended to create brains that had to follow his directives without thinking. He then invented the most fortunate characters of his literary work, that is, Don Camillo and Peppone, but also the Crucified Christ, through which he wanted to reiterate to his readers that yes, one could follow his own ideology, be different, but without that reason for contempt or violence against those who thought differently. Through his particular artistic training, he was able to put in his writings particular elements that made him arrive with great success in the world of cinema. This was also a path that was not easy due to the tendency of directors and screenwriters to lighten the dose of anticommunism, seriousness and commitment that wanted to transmit. In fact, analyzing the films made by the Guareschian saga, we discover the changes, the tampering, as well as the cuts that targeted the spirit of the book, which made him very badly, trying to defend his creatures with every means possible. The writer in fact never gave up, and did everything possible to maintain the spirit of his book trying to "censure" in turn the tampering especially those that could destroy it or even "disqualify" as a writer and political journalist.
