Abstract:
Abstract We conducted a preliminary examination of the responses of stream amphibians and instream habitat conditions to alternative riparian buffer zones with forest thinning upslope. Pre and posttreatment surveys were carried out on 68 headwater stream reaches (including 23 unthinned reference reaches) at 11 sites in western Oregon. Streams were in managed conifer stands, 40 to 80 years old, where the thinning treatment reduced stands from 600 trees per hectare (tph) to 200 tph. Treatments consisted of four widths of riparian buffers approximately 6, 15, 70, and 145 m on each side of streams

Drawing on insights offered by Richard Beck in Unclean: Meditations on Purity, Hospitality, and Mortality (Beck 2011), I explore several categories of disgust. Girard incorporates sociomoral disgust into his theoretical reflections; however, core disgust and animal-reminder disgust are discrete forms of revulsion not recognized as such by Girard. Arguing that these merit special attention, I argue that Girard’s theory is made more compelling, not less, when we attend to foul elements that ooze from around the edges of his theory despite his effort to contain them under the sign of sacrifice. Summary We owe the emergence of the linguistic idea of phrase to Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670), in his Grammatica Latino-vernacula (Leszno 1649). He proposes to use the stylistic term ‘phrasis’ with a new linguistic meaning, in order to indicate a group of words arranged in a hierarchical structure, which is an intermediate syntactic unit between the word and the sentence. This idea allows us to back-date by a century the discovery of “groups of words”, which is usually ascribed to Gabriel Girard (1677–1774) in 1747.

This special issue is devoted to some aspects of the new ideas that recently arose from the work of Thomas Ehrhard on the models of linear logic (LL) and of the λ-calculus. In some sense, the very origin of these ideas dates back to the introduction of LL in the 80s by Jean-Yves Girard. An obvious remark is that LL yielded a first logical quantitative account of the use of resources: the logical distinction between linear and non-linear formulas through the introduction of the exponential connectives. As explicitly mentioned by Girard in his first paper on the subject, the quantitative approac

After considering how Elizabeth Bowen’s short stories cast light on the Home Front rhetorics of sacrifice and reconstruction, it looks at how poets Robert Graves, Keith Douglas, and Alun Lewis reflect on First World War poetry of sacrifice. With reference to René Girard’s and Carl von Clausewitz’s writings on war, I take up Elaine Cobley’s assertion about the differing valencies

Abstract The two Girard translations provide two different means of obtaining embeddings of Intuitionistic Logic into Linear Logic, corresponding to different lambda-calculus calling mechanisms. The translations, mapping $$A\rightarrow B$$ A → B respectively to $${!}{A}\multimap B$$ ! A ⊸ B and $${!}{(A\multimap B)}$$ ! ( A ⊸ B ) , have been shown to correspond respectively to call-by-name and call-by-value. In this work, we split the of-course modality of linear logic into two modalities, written “ $${!} $$ ! ” and “ $$\bullet $$ ∙ ”. Intuitively, the modality “ $${!} $$ ! ” specifies a subpr

Abstract The syntactic calculus, also known as ‘ bidirectional categorial grammar’, is a kind of logic without any structural rules, other than the obligatory reflexive law and cut-rule. It had been inspired by multilinear algebra and non-commutative ring theory and was developed with applications to linguistics in mind. Here we shall confine attention to the associative version, although a non-associative version has also been studied [L 1961, Kandulski 1988, Došen 1988, 1989]. It differs from a very rudimentary form of Girard’s linear logic [Girard 1987, 1989] by the absence of the interchan

My more modest goal is to read this festival as a material and rhetorical dispositif arising in response to a social crisis (Castro Gómez, 2011), closely related to what I have called elsewhere regimes of festive alteration (Vignolo, 2015: 138-159): 1 T

Abstract Arthur Blythe’s story may not make a movie, but it certainly works as jazz allegory. He came to New York from San Diego in the magical mid’70s, and on his second night out sat in with Elvin Jones. Although he had been critically neglected at home, at 34 he was hardly inexperienced—having studied with, among others, the 1940s Lunceford saxophonist Kirtland Bradford and bandleader Horace Tapscott, in whose groups he had played for a decade—and he came East complete with the attention-grabbing sobriquet Black Arthur Blythe. Far more impressive was his wholly original approach to timbre.

While the impact of climate change on the agriculture is highly publicized, other environmental problems such as pests and crop diseases are no less significant. To combat their adverse effects, diverse plant protection products (PPPs) can be adopted as a means of prevention and eradication of harmful organisms. However, empirical evidence shows that inappropriate PPP use is a major obstacle to the attainment of high-quality and healthy agricultural products. As incorrect PPP application leads to pesticide residues on edible produce, it poses risk to human and animal health, but also contribut
