Reinwardtia 14 (2): 249 - 258. - Ecological protection strategies, designed by sharing information and integrating data, play an important role in defining interconnections and interdependencies in research as well as in increasing global awareness. The Geographic Information System (GIS) web server is one technology solution to improve the interoperability and sharing between the biodiversity databases of an organization and the databases of other research groups. In this paper, a database system integration framework based on GIS technology and a GIS server system using the latest cloud-based technology have been developed to incorporate biodiversity databases in Asian region. A GIS server is a GIS web platform integrating multiple geodatabases and provides data display and query, allowing users to apply internet browsers to manipulate the functions and query the data, etc. To demonstrate the effectiveness of a GIS web server, plant biodiversity survey dataset of Mt. Gede Pangrango, West Java in Indonesia, was given as a case study for development and utilization of biodiversity information system in Asian region.

Abstract:

Geographic information system (GIS) is designed to generate maps, manage spatial datasets, perform sophisticated “what if” spatial analyses, visualize multiple spatial datasets simultaneously, and solve location-based queries. The impact of big data is in every industry, including the GIS. The location-based big data also known as big spatial data has significant implications as it forces the industry to contemplate how to acquire and leverage spatial information. In this study, a comprehensive taxonomy is created to provide a better understanding of the uses of GIS and big spatial data. The taxonomy is made up of big data technologies, GIS data sources, tools, analytics, and applications. The authors look into the importance of big spatial data and its implications, review the data sources, and GIS analytics, applications, and GIS tools. Furthermore, in order to guide researchers interested in GIS, the challenges that require substantial research efforts are taken into account. Lastly, open issues in GIS that require further observation are summarized.

Abstract:

What’s the relationship between GIS and the political subject? In an effort to address this question, this paper traces the movement from the map to GIS. The map is shown to be the performative utterance of the state, one that supports its national discourse and narrative. GIS, on the other hand, is shown to be a device of neoliberal governmentality, its non-representational economic practices, divided discourse and subjectivities. Despite the seemingly hopeless situation surrounding GIS, however, certain simulation and modelling practices are attempting to construct subjectivities out of economic neoliberalism’s fractured narratives. They do this by reading meaning into otherwise mathematical datasets and models. These practices could form a basis for queering GIS.

Abstract:

GIS technology is credited with substantially improving police crime analysis and related resource allocation. Although GIS has been said to be an efficient and effective technology in policing, limited empirical assessment has been conducted. An examination of functions and a review of the literature suggests four major applications of GIS in policing: computerized crime mapping/crime analysis; “hot spots” identification; improving command-level decision making; and geographical investigative analysis (primarily offender profiling). The primary objective of this qualitative review is to identify the extent of empirical evaluations of the effectiveness of a GIS. Although there is some research reference offender profiling, results are mixed. Only two empirical evaluations have been published that examine crime mapping, and both are limited to effects on perceptions. No empirical work links GIS to police deployment effectiveness.

With the development of the Internet, the geographic information system gets a chance to develop rapidly. Aiming at the security problems of existing geographic information systems, a Mimic Geographic Information System, i.e. M-GIS, based on mimic defense is proposed to improve the security of geographic information systems. The system consists of heterogeneous redundancy geographic information execution bodies pool, request distributor, scheduler and arbiter. Firstly, the scheduler dynamically selects the geographic information execution bodies set for processing, and then makes a mimic decision on the processing results. The experimental results show that the mimic system is more security than traditional system.

GIS (Geographic Information System) are computer-based tools used to visualize, analyze, accumulate and explicate geographic data. The determinants of health status are often correlated and analogous. Establishing GIS-based approaches and programmes can predict and analyze the complexity of web of causation of many health issues. GIS can be used to efficaciously investigate health along with its physical, social and cultural environments. Mapping functions of GIS can be used to plot health attributes for better visualization, exploration, and modeling of health patterns. GIS based healthcare helps in explaining and describing health outcomes, health disparities, healthcare access and how health care delivery can be improved. GIS can also be used to bring all spatial data under one umbrella of “Geo Data Bank” that could provide easy accessibility and help in better utility of healthcare services. In India, the adoption and use of digital spatial methods like GIS in the field of healthcare has lagged. However, the “Computer Aided Utility Mapping Project for six cities” in India is a significant benefit for the GIS users in the country which can be used by healthcare sector in the near future for the upliftment of healthcare facility. The primary focus of the paper is to provide details about benefits of using GIS-based analytical approaches in healthcare planning, the successes, challenges, remedies and future perspective of GIS in healthcare delivery. Abstract:

Perusahaan Daerah Perkebunan (PDP) Kahyangan is a Regional Owned Enterprise in Jember Regency which was formed to realize the prosperity of the community. In Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2012-chapter 3 clauses 2, the government can manage regional finances by exploring sources of Regional Original Income, one of which is from the PDP. In addition, the purpose of the establishment of the PDP is as a means of developing the economy in the context of regional development by increasing productivity from all aspects to increase regional income. The main commodities are coffee and rubber, cloves, Mahoni, and Sengon wood are supporting commodities. Based on interviews PDP's profit contribution to Jember's income has continued to decline in recent years due to the absence of good management of its potential. So, this research will manage a system that can assist in obtaining information about the distribution of plantation land commodities in Jember, as well as mapping existing commodities by Geographic Information System (GIS). The method for developing GIS uses a Design Sprint. The output of this method prototypes and will implement in the GIS application.

Abstract:

A comprehensive highway cost model can be used for optimizing highway alignments subject to a number of design constraints. Because a geographic information system (GIS) can spatially represent the locations of properties, floodplains, streams, and other geographical characteristics of significance in a highway cost model, it can provide valuable input to a highway design optimization model. Additionally, a GIS-based model can be developed to compute geographically sensitive costs to be used with an iterative optimization scheme. However, connecting a GIS to a highway optimization model requires full automation of an entire search process in which there is a continuous exchange of inputs and outputs until the optimized solution is obtained. An integrated model is developed by linking a GIS model with an optimization model employing genetic algorithms (GAs). The GIS model provides accurate geographical features, computes location-dependent costs, and transmits these costs to an external program. That program computes length-dependent costs and user costs and then, using GAs, optimizes the highway alignment to minimize the sum of all costs. An example study using real land use and environmental features is presented for a part of Talbot County, Maryland. The computational performance of the integrated model is assessed.

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an important distributed information resource. GIS technology is being utilized in many areas of research. Based on the concept of agent, we introduce a multi-agent architecture to develop a GIS Multi-Agent System based on Ontology (GISMAO) that enables cooperation to assist different users to locate and retrieve spatial GIS file information in large networks based on ontological relationship between GIS concepts. GISMAO consists of two subsystems: Gathering subsystem; and Query subsystem. The Gathering Sub-System is used to collect spatial GIS files information from remote locations, and to store them in the server. Ontology is used to represent concepts and relations that are common concepts in the domain. The Query Sub-System is used to help the user in his/her daily work with the GIS; it works as a GIS retrieval (query) tool. The objective of this system is to demonstrate how the agents can cooperate to transparently locate and retrieve GIS information. To prove the concept, a partial implementation of this framework has been carried out using some modules and libraries of Java, Aglet, Jena and AltovaXML.

It focuses on the geographical information related to the whole or part of the earth’s surface. It has inherent advantages in processing geographic data and plays an indispensable role in the sustainable detection of natural resources, natural disaster risk management, urban sustainable development planning, etc. With the continuous development of technology, the integration of GIS with emerging technologies such as big data, cloud services, and artificial intelligence creates new geographic information systems and entirely new development directions. The GIS architecture is of great value for the efficient execution of GIS systems. In this process, as the organizational form of GIS systems, the GIS architecture is also constantly evolving with the intersection and integration of GIS and other technologies. This research reviews a large amount of literature on component technologies, 3D technologies, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, and so on, at home and abroad and analyzes and elaborates on the current development status and trends of GIS software architecture. It discusses in detail the characteristics and future development directions of different GIS software architectures in different periods and makes delicate descriptions of their hierarchical features. This study aims to summarize the advantages and disadvantages of architectures in different stages, the interactivity from the user’s perspective. On this basis, it studies the development trends of GIS integrated with big data and artificial intelligence, summarizes the laws and experience of the evolution of its system architecture, and analyzes the technological drivers of each evolution and their impact on GIS applications. Reviewing the evolution history of GIS frameworks is expected to provide guiding references for more efficient GIS system architecture research in the future.

The planning process for roadway construction involves a large amount of information on design, construction methods, quantities, unit costs, production rates, and site conditions. Therefore, it is very important to acquire, manage, and process the necessary information efficiently to produce a rigorous construction plan. The geographic information system (GIS) is a very effective tool for integrating and managing various types of information, including spatial and nonspatial data, required for roadway construction planning. This paper proposes a GIS-based system for improving roadway construction planning with its "interactive space scheduling" and "operation level planning" functions, which are supported by the integration of various data required for planning. The proposed system can assist construction planners in a unique way by integrating design and construction information and creating modularized design elements for space scheduling in real time using its interactive space scheduling function. In addition, operation level planning on earthwork can be conducted via the ability of the system to analyze haul routes in three dimensions and selecting the best equipment combination. Research background: A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based information system that gathers, manages, and disseminates different geographic (related to earth) information to provide intelligent analytics necessary for prompt decisions and actions. A GIS can aggregate data from several different streams and turn it into a smart dashboard for different users to enhance productivity. The use of intelligent technologies, remote sensing, and ad-hoc wireless networks has significantly improved GIS. In GIS, utilization of sensed data from different sources depends upon the use of efficient sensing equipment, smart mobile nodes, and network gateways and relays that can efficiently route traffic towards the sink or base station. GIS achieve attention in emergency response scenarios for their capability to collect, analyze, and process spatial-referred. Purpose of the article: Article is focused on studying and identifying suitable routing issues of wireless mobile nodes, which are the main transponders for smooth and errorless data transmission. Methods: We performed a simulation-based comparative study of three different routing protocols used in ad-hoc wireless networks, namely is to identify suitable routing protocols that can aid the GIS to improve its overall performance. We calculated and compared our results with different routing protocols. We were able, with the Random mobility model, to estimate the performance of various network parameters. Findings & Value added: We proposed a study in this work that includes geo-information services overall of routing protocols to support a team in stressful situations. The study shows that the AODV routing protocol performed better than the other two routing protocols (OLSR & TORA) under the given topology.

Abstract:

While geographic information systems (GIS) have proven to be powerful tools that are capable of storing, displaying, and analyzing spatially distributed information, current GIS lack adequate capabilities for handling temporal information. As a result, analyses are mostly performed assuming a fixed time point. Longitudinal analyses that take time into consideration cannot be easily accomplished. For many applications, information constantly changes in both space and time. A temporal GIS, one that is capable of handling temporal as well as spatial information, will greatly expand the current GIS applications and allow new information to be obtained. Some preliminary results are presented of an ongoing study of a temporal GIS. To explore the problems and potential benefits of a temporal GIS, a simple method has been developed to record the changes in spatial objects for time using personal computer ARC/INFO relational databases as well as a set of commands to query the spatiotemporal data. The use of this temporal GIS method is illustrated using an example of transit service analysis.

Location translation allows the use of multiple spatial referencing methods within a geographic information system (GIS). Most GIS users are familiar with planar or spherical coordinates expressed as (x, y) pairs of numbers whose values reflect the map projection used. Coordinates are characterized as unique physical locations on the earth’s surface. Transportation professionals have added many methods of referencing data that occur along lines. Linear referencing systems generally reflect a measure of distance from a known point. Common linear referencing methods are route–milepoint and route–reference post–offset. Linear referencing methods do not uniquely define locations on the earth’s surface without additional information about the location of the line (or road) on the earth’s surface. Although many of the off-the-shelf GIS systems allow conversion among a wide variety of planar or spherical referencing systems, few accommodate linear referencing systems, and none are capable of translating among linear referencing systems or between planar or spherical and linear systems. Some of the issues that arise in the development of location translation systems are discussed. A description of the data model and database requirements of the system designed for the Utah Department of Transportation is included. This location translation system was developed to facilitate crash reporting in urban areas, although there are numerous applications within transportation agencies.

In this paper, IR-based GIS application is developed by using web programming. The web is used as a search engine when someone wants to find a college. The application shows the map and information of the college in the area according to the query of the user. Naive Bayes algorithm is used to classify the user query and locate the query on the map. Based on our prototype, the application is promising to be implemented for the student.

Infested areas were recorded in the GIS along with information normally found on United States Geological Survey topographic maps. Infested areas were separated into management areas according to possible treatment method and special environmental or health requirements such as proximity to streams or inhabited buildings. The location, size, and type of each management area were recorded in the database. The database was constructed to maintain treatment and efficacy data for tracking the process of eradication for each infestation. Areas were identified for detection surveying, including coordinates for navigating with a global positioning system (GPS).

This paper reviews the basics of GPS and GIS technology and describes their application for locating trees in rural park and forest settings. During a hazard tree survey in a Massachusetts state park, project members investigated the feasibility of using GPS and GIS to create maps that highlighted individual trees and other landmarks. The project intended to show that GPS and GIS can accurately locate trees. This technology is especially useful for arborists and urban foresters who need to map trees in rural parks, along rural roads and trails, and on large estates and institutional land, where other location methods are impractical. Depending on a variety of circumstances, GPS and GIS can be used in combination with aerial photographs or standard line and symbol maps to create appropriate tree maps for a particular area. Although certain problems still hinder the mapping process, new technology developments will expedite using GPS and GIS to produce maps.

The system is developed using a mobile platform as a value system that is more flexible and dynamic. For the analysis of the forecasting in an area uses a multiple regression method involving three independent variables, namely the use of dry land, the use of building land and land use. The results of the predictive forecasting provides location points of interest and public facilities located in the location which make it easy to give consideration in selecting a location which is appropriate to build.

But, when the construction project involves, besides indoor planning, outdoor planning also is important part that need to be look up. To cover the outdoor planning in construction project, Geographic Information System (GIS) need to be applied. GIS can overcome this problem because GIS mainly for outdoor planning by using their spatial analysis. GIS can offer a high degree of geospatial information and can provide the detailed geometrical and semantic information of building to assisted across improve automation. Towards produce the improved preparation in construction project, BIM and GIS should be integrated. To integrate both domains, the data interoperability between them need to be investigate because they used different data standard. This study focusses on solving the data interoperability through the data integration between BIM and GIS to solve the problem of data mismatch and data missing during data translation process. Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) was used as a data standard to perform the data integration between BIM and GIS. The outcomes from this study show that when the data interoperability applied between BIM and GIS, the problem above can be solved, and the data dimension and their coordinate system also can be control.

Abstract The Geographical Information System (GIS) mobile application helps the communities in a specific area, the agency related to the maintenance and solving problems related to infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to enhance the location and visualization of the current reporting system. The methodology used in this study starts with a preliminary study to understand the issue, data collection, data processing, and system design using ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS App Studio to design the application, ArcGIS Online to create the computer dashboard, and finished by testing the system. As a result, a mobile geographical information system based on the maintenance and solving problems related to infrastructure was created as a mobile application. Some people tested the Smart Campus GIS Mobile Application Reporting System in the specified area to verify the capabilities. In conclusion, the positive feedback received from the respondent is used to validate the mobile application and is ready to be used by the people in the target area.

ABSTRACT In a continuous effort to improve oil spill management, the Ninth Coast Guard District is utilizing a Geographic Information System (GIS) to integrate data, coordinate information, and implement actions with incident planning and response. During an incident, initial team goals are to minimize response times in order to more effectively bring resources to bear thus creating a more effective outcome, which reduce impacts and overall costs. The Ninth Coast Guard District's GIS system enables the user to make informed, quick decisions during an incident by diminishing the guesswork of the response action process. During the planning phase, and for specific areas, several objectives can be completed prior to the actual incident in order to assist in decision-making when an incident occurs. Some of these objectives include 1.) The integration of the Incident Command System,2.) Development of an Incident Action Plan, 3.) Pre-approved on-water and shoreline removal strategies, 4.) The use of Shoreline Pre-Impact Assessment Team (SPIAT) information. Finally, the GIS allows effective assimilation of field data and information as it becomes available thus providing the response team efforts with an accurate and up-to-the-minute picture of actual conditions. The Ninth Coast Guard District is continually conforming to and taking advantage of the latest technology offered. Our goal is to meet the ever-changing response methodologies and enhance the multifaceted resources available to the responder. Involvement from all stakeholders including federal, state, tribal, local and from the private sector undoubtedly helps drive a very effective environmental and economical response.

The article examines the issue of using geographic information systems (GIS) and WEBGIS technologies to predict areas likely to be flooded. Probabilistic flood hazard maps (0.5%, 0.1% and 1% flood risks) were used, obtained from a model installation in an area subject to flood risk, in this case, the municipality of Ungheni in the Republic Moldova, which has been flooded in the past. The application of GIS technologies is necessary to prevent floods affecting households, infrastructure and to minimize its effects. For this purpose, were analyzed the previous floods that occurred in the region. Also were applied and overlaid thematic digital maps such as Land Use, river network, DTM, Delineation Methodology of water bodies which represents the transposition of the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC and at the end were uploaded on an ESRI Web GIS platform http://www.dbga.md/siga.html. The development of applying database management applications is currently underway within Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications in the Sultanate of Oman.The establishment of a national database management system in Oman is considered as the backbone that is required within the Geographic Information System project in Oman. The principal of the GIS project in Oman was built upon unifying the used software packages over the sultanate which is ARC/INFO as GIS Package and ORACLE as database management software. These packages are used within the different participating Ministries in the GIS project in Oman.The participating ministries will handle information that are shared between them. The shared information among the different ministries is the attributed data which is defined as descriptive information extracted from geographic features that usually existed on the topographic maps and the ministries maps (utility maps). The map features can be classified into different layers according to the principles of ARC/INFO GIS Package. Accordingly, the main objectives of this research paper is to explain the technique proposed for establishing a national database management system that can handle and manage the shared information amongst the participating ministries in the project. The proposed database design will be made using the ORACLE database management system. Moreover, the paper will handle a proposed idea for linking the geographic map layers with the corresponding attributed database in order to create Geographic Information System applications. As a Conclusion, it is Proposed that all the government GIS departments in the Sultanate will share the same information within a unique national database management which can be considered one of the major benefits in applying database management in the field of Geographic Information Systems.
