Abstract:
Abstract120 Arpeggio Op. 1 developed by Mauro Giuliani is a technique exercises specifically targeting the improvement of the ability of the right finger for classical guitarists. Various variations or complete right finger exercise formulas are summarized in 120 Arpeggio Op. 1 Mauro Giuliani. This research was conducted with the aim to find out about any aspect of the right hand that had improved after practicing using the 120 Arpeggio Op. 1 technique exercises method of Mauro Giuliani. The results of this research showed that there were several things that technically the right hand had improved after doing the exercises with the M. Giulian method, including: (1) Speed of the plucking, (2) Finger synchronization when plucking the string, (3) Accuracy of the finger when plucking the guitar strings and (4) Articulation. The method used in this study is a qualitative method by prioritizing explanations which are then forwarded analytically to the research object.

Abstract:
Whilst the coronavirus pandemic keeps threatening the world at large, little is yet known about the impoliteness implications of user-generated- Covid-related contents on social media such as Facebook. The aim of this study is to examine the comments made in response to Giuliani’s Covid- 19 diagnosis, from an impoliteness perspective. A merely qualitative analysis of a dataset of 3,000 comments evenly collected from three different news outlets (i.e., BBC, CNN, Fox News), the findings reveal that the reactions to Giuliani’s diagnosis are more focused on him being a politician, than him being a human being affected by the virus. The reactions attack his actions and the actions of others within his political party, which suggests that impoliteness has a strong dependence on previous actions and political engagement. Giuliani is seen by some users to be undeserving of compassion or empathy not just on the grounds of his active involvement in attempting to overturn the presidential election results, but also for his disregard toward mask wearing in public spheres. Not all the users, however, appreciate the attacks against Giuliani. Through metadiscursive comments, some users not just feel the need to treat Giuliani as a human being, but more importantly remind fellow users that Covid-19 should be a concern for all. What is particularly critical about these metacomments is that while the users advocate for civil interactions, they mostly do not condone Giuliani’s actions. This so because these users understand what should be obligatory, permissible, or forbidden on the human level under the circumstances.

Mauro Giuliani, one of the most important figures in the growth and development of the guitar in the earlier nineteenth century, spent his most productive years in Vienna from 1806 to 1819. He was well connected with the cultural and social life of the imperial city, at the time a melting pot which welcomed talented artists with diverse backgrounds from throughout the provinces and neighboring states. Here, Hackl discusses Giuliani's folk songs.

Abstract:
Whatever Luca Giuliani writes is usually worth reading. Image and Myth, a translation and revision of his Bild und Mythos (Munich, 2003), is no exception. This monograph engages with a topic germane to the origins and development of classical archaeology – the relation of art to text. Giuliani begins, rather ponderously, with an exposition of G. E. Lessing's 1766 essay Laokoon, ‘on the limits of painting and poetry’. Lessing, a dramatist, predictably considered poetry the more effective medium for conveying a story. A picture, in his eyes, encapsulates the vision of a moment – likewise a statue. The Laocoon group, then, is a past perfect moment. A poet can provide the beginning, middle, and end of a story; the artist, only the representation of a fleeting appearance. Giuliani shows that this distinction does not necessarily hold – works of art can be synoptic, disobedient of Aristotelian laws about unity of place and time (and scale). Yet he extracts from Lessing's essay a basic dichotomy between the narrative and the descriptive. This dichotomy dictates the course of a study that is most illuminating when its author is being neither narrative nor descriptive but analytical – explaining, with commendable care for detail, what we see in an ancient work of art. But is the distinction between narrative and descriptive as useful as Giuliani wants it to be? One intellectual predecessor, Carl Robert, is scarcely acknowledged, and a former mentor, Karl Schefold, is openly repudiated; both of these leave-takings are consequent from the effort on Giuliani's part to avoid seeking (and finding) ‘Homeric’ imagery in early Greek art. The iconography of Geometric vases, he maintains, ‘is devoid of narrative intention: it refers to what can be expected to take place in the world’ (37). In this period, we should not be asking whether an image is ‘compatible’ with a story, but rather whether it is incomprehensible without a story. If the answer is ‘no’, then the image is descriptive, not narrative. Thus the well-known oinochoe in Munich, clearly showing a shipwreck, and arguably intending to represent a single figure astride an overturned keel, need not be read as a visual allusion to Odyssey 12.403–25, or some version of the tale of Odysseus surviving a shipwreck. It is just one of those things that happens in the world. Well, we may be thinking – let us be glad that it happens less frequently these days, but double our travel insurance nevertheless. As Giuliani commits himself to this approach, he is forced to concede that certain Geometric scenes evoke the ‘heroic lifestyle’ – but, since we cannot admit Homer's heroes, we must accept the existence of the ‘everyman aristocrat’ (or aristocratic everyman: either way, risking oxymoron). Readers may wonder if Lessing's insistence on separating the descriptive from the narrative works at all well for Homer as an author: for does not Homer's particular gift lie in adding graphic, descriptive detail to his narrative? And have we not learned (from Barthes and others) that ‘descriptions’, semiotically analysed, carry narrative implications – implications for what precedes and follows the ‘moment’ described? So the early part of Giuliani's argument is not persuasive. His conviction, and convincing quality, grows as artists become literate, and play a ‘new game’ ‘in the context of aristocratic conviviality’ (87) – that of adding names to figures (as on the François Vase). Some might say this was simply a literate version of the old game: in any case, it also includes the possibility of ‘artistic licence’. So when Giuliani notes, ‘again we find an element here that is difficult to reconcile with the epic narrative’ (149), this does not, thankfully, oblige him to dismiss the link between art and text, or art and myth (canonical or not). Evidently a painter such as Kleitias could heed the Muses, or aspire to be inspired; a painter might also enjoy teasing his patrons with ‘tweaks’ and corrigenda to a poet's work. (The latter must have been the motive of Euphronios, when representing the salvage of the body of Sarpedon as overseen by Hermes, rather than by Apollo, divergent from the Homeric text.) Eventually there will be ‘pictures for readers’, and a ‘pull of text’ that is overt in Hellenistic relief-moulded bowls, allowing Giuliani to talk of ‘illustrations’ – images that ‘have surrendered their autonomy’ (252).

Abstract:
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the making of potpourris on popular themes was the easiest way to compose 'new' music, and music which could eventually determine the popularity of a performer. The guitarist Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) was at the center of the exploitation of such a musical practice: he was indeed a master in arranging for his instrument, and left a substantial number of high-quality transcriptions. Among these are Le Rossiniane per Chitarra, Opp. 119-124, which are considered his masterpieces. Le Rossiniane are a series of six arrangements in potpourri genre written to honor Rossini's operatic music, as well as to exploit the composer's fame in Europe at the time. According to the famous guitar scholar Ruggero Chiesa, Le Rossiniane are "a marvelous fresco of great immediacy and inventiveness, as well as a masterful display of guitar writing." There are numerous traits in both Le Rossiniane's structural features - e.g. their title, their genre, their musical quotations, and their literal notes - as well as their historical context that makes them a transtextual set of musical works. Using the words of famous French literary theorist Gérard Genette (1930-2018), they seem to possess "all that sets the text in a relationship, whether obvious or concealed, with other texts." This research makes a complete analysis of Le Rossiniane by using Genette's theory of transtextuality (and all of its subtypes). Genette's theory is the basis on which music and literary quotation theory is intermixed in this research, in order to make an interdisciplinary study of Le Rossiniane that concentrates particularly on categorizing all the different types of quotations employed by Giuliani in his Rossinian potpourris.

Abstract:
Mauro Giuliani (1781–1829): Instrumental and Vocal Style in Le Sei Rossiniane Abstract Instrumental music that derives from operas of the nineteenth century belongs to a rich tradition based on vocal and instrumental techniques and performing styles that also include a large element of unwritten performance practices and conventions. These include tempo rubato, phrasing, articulation and imitating orchestral instruments. The instrumental performance tradition based on vocal models has been filtered through modern performance practice, however, as modernist aesthetics have prevailed. Mauro Giuliani (1781–1829), in his Sei Rossiniane (opp. 119–124), takes his thematic material from Giaochino Rossini’s most popular and early operas. In the quest to perform these works in a historically informed way one must examine the historical practices that pertain to this repertoire. Understanding the emotional context of the arias from which composers borrow is an important link to conveying the original intention of the music. Whilst there is evidence to suggest that Rossini did not pay close attention to the literal meaning of the libretti in setting them to music, it is significant to be able to grasp the emotional context. This research sets out to investigate Mauro Giuliani’s musical upbringing, influences, performance style and ability to compose in a tasteful way so as to appeal to the mass market of amateurs that desired to have opera music dispersed in their homes. Ideas of instrumentation, voice type, vocal quality and tone colour, keys, tempi and expressive indications can be immediately identified upon perusal of the original aria scores, and provide important clues for guitarists about how to approach the Rossiniane. This research also looks at the specific vocal and guitar techniques that were widely employed at the time and suggests ways in which a modern guitarist performing on a modern classical guitar can try to emulate these techniques for audiences of today. Also included are score excerpts, audio examples and a case study of Giuliani’s arrangement of a Rossini aria in his Rossiniane, “Assisa a piè d’un salice”, from Otello. Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
THE FLUTE AND GUITAR DUO: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EQUAL PARTNERSHIP By Lisa Marie Schroeder December 2015 The 21st century flute and guitar duo literature contains equal parts of intricate melodic and harmonic content, challenging both players with standard and contemporary techniques. In the past, beginning with the late seventeen hundreds, the repertoire for this combination consisted of simple flute melodies and sparse, accompanimental guitar parts. When did an equal partnership begin developing between the instruments and how are professional duos guiding this change? For the research of this document, a survey was drafted and sent to 104 professional flute and guitar duos around the globe, resulting in 51 duos completing and returning the questionnaire. Of the 51 duos that returned the survey, 48 duos qualified as professional and three duos were disqualified. The general consensus reached is that the flute and guitar duo has developed into an equal partnership in the last 30 years, accomplished through music with more substantial parts for both instruments, beginning with the legendary Histoire du Tango by Ástor Piazzolla. My hope is that those who read this document will understand the need for more flute and guitar music containing equal parts, thus inspiring commissions. I hope, too, that the lists of pieces revealed by seasoned flute and guitar duos (located in Appendix B and C), will be a useful tool for all flute and guitar duos, especially those starting out in the genre. This document is essential to the university flute and guitar studios and beginning duos in selecting pieces in which both performers will learn and grow as instrumentalists and chamber musicians.

The analysis of her diaries and the registers in her canonization process show how much her perseverant life style, marked by periods of intensive fasting, the violence against her own body, and her search for holiness under the benevolent eye of the Church associates her with modern anorexic symptoms. This paper aims at setting up a parallel between two kinds of relationship: that of Christianity s women saints and martyrs with the Church (the Holy Mother), and that of anorexic girls with their mothers. Accomplices of a lethal project, these pairs comply with the appealing of a perfection ideal. Although separated by several centuries, they present the same symptoms and manifestations of a timeless superego that is passed down from generation to generation. Abstract:
Laser vibrometry (LV) is originally a laser-based, line-of-sight measurement technique dedicated to the analysis of surface vibrations. It was lately adapted at TU Graz for monitoring the stability of an air-methane flame (Giuliani et al., ASME Turbo-Expo 2006, GT 2006-90413). This paper reports on the mapping of density fluctuations measured with LV in a premixed air-methane flame (free-jet; swirl-stabilised) with a forced flow modulation (quarter-wave resonator; amplification with a siren). In order to correlate the density fluctuations with the jet aerodynamics and turbulent flame shape, stereoscopic PIV and high-speed schlieren visualisations were used. The paper addresses issues regarding the estimate of density fluctuations, the transform from line-of-sight to local measurement with tomographic methods, and the potential of the method for detailed description of thermoacoustic couplings. One emphasised application of LV is its ability to perform precise and low-cost benchmark stability tests on a combustor during the design phase (time-resolved measurement; high frequency and phase resolution on the 5 Hz–20kHz range with the present equipment and settings; near-constant spectral sensitivity over a large bandwidth; no seeding required; measurement possible over the whole combustion volume).

Abstract:
The fortress of San Paolino in Ripafratta (San Giuliano Terme, Tuscany, Italy), represents the main structure of the ancient Pisan Republic defensive system towards Lucca. The fortress is the product of several stratifications dating back to the tenth century. It was built in the years between 1162-1164; later on, starting from 1504, significant interventions of modernization were realized by the Florentine Government, probably following a project by Giuliano da San Gallo. Since the early seventeenth century, the fortress lost its military function and passed to private property. Nowadays, the fortress is in a deep state of degradation, even if since 2008 several initiatives has followed for its recovery, unfortunately without success. The paper aims to show the results of an interdisciplinary project for the enhancement of the fortress and its territory. Based on a careful territorial analysis and in-depth historical study, a mix of compatible functions was identified in order to maximize the use of the fortress in all the seasons. A feasibility study was also developed for verifying the economic sustainability of the whole project and identifying possible intervention phases.

Tolic, Ines. "In Quest of Modernity: Le Corbusier’s Project for the New Civic Hospital in Venice." In LC2015 - Le Corbusier, 50 years later. Universitat Politècnica València, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/lc2015.2015.1033.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: The paper deals with Le Corbusier’s unbuilt project for Venice analyzing the meaning of the Civic Hospital within the cultural context between 1954, the year in which the new master plan started to take shape, and 1966, when an extraordinary ‘acqua alta’ put an end to city’s contemporary ambitions. In Venice’s quest for modernity, the master plan (1954-1962), the national competition for the San Giuliano district (1959), the national competition for the Hospital (1963) and the international one for the Tronchetto Island (1964-1965) represent key events in which conservatives and modernists found themselves face to face, and in relation to which Le Corbusier’s project has not yet been studied. Even though Le Corbusier’s Hospital was presented to the public opinion as a courageous and innovative project, this paper seeks to demonstrate that it was actually more in line with the conservative front because it brought back the “problem of Venice” to its insular dimension after more than a decade of attempts to solve it considering a wider regional frame. Abstract:
