Abstract:
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the making of potpourris on popular themes was the easiest way to compose 'new' music, and music which could eventually determine the popularity of a performer. The guitarist Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) was at the center of the exploitation of such a musical practice: he was indeed a master in arranging for his instrument, and left a substantial number of high-quality transcriptions. Among these are Le Rossiniane per Chitarra, Opp. 119-124, which are considered his masterpieces. Le Rossiniane are a series of six arrangements in potpourri genre written to honor Rossini's operatic music, as well as to exploit the composer's fame in Europe at the time. According to the famous guitar scholar Ruggero Chiesa, Le Rossiniane are "a marvelous fresco of great immediacy and inventiveness, as well as a masterful display of guitar writing." There are numerous traits in both Le Rossiniane's structural features - e.g. their title, their genre, their musical quotations, and their literal notes - as well as their historical context that makes them a transtextual set of musical works. Using the words of famous French literary theorist Gérard Genette (1930-2018), they seem to possess "all that sets the text in a relationship, whether obvious or concealed, with other texts." This research makes a complete analysis of Le Rossiniane by using Genette's theory of transtextuality (and all of its subtypes). Genette's theory is the basis on which music and literary quotation theory is intermixed in this research, in order to make an interdisciplinary study of Le Rossiniane that concentrates particularly on categorizing all the different types of quotations employed by Giuliani in his Rossinian potpourris.

Abstract:
Mauro Giuliani (1781–1829): Instrumental and Vocal Style in Le Sei Rossiniane Abstract Instrumental music that derives from operas of the nineteenth century belongs to a rich tradition based on vocal and instrumental techniques and performing styles that also include a large element of unwritten performance practices and conventions. These include tempo rubato, phrasing, articulation and imitating orchestral instruments. The instrumental performance tradition based on vocal models has been filtered through modern performance practice, however, as modernist aesthetics have prevailed. Mauro Giuliani (1781–1829), in his Sei Rossiniane (opp. 119–124), takes his thematic material from Giaochino Rossini’s most popular and early operas. In the quest to perform these works in a historically informed way one must examine the historical practices that pertain to this repertoire. Understanding the emotional context of the arias from which composers borrow is an important link to conveying the original intention of the music. Whilst there is evidence to suggest that Rossini did not pay close attention to the literal meaning of the libretti in setting them to music, it is significant to be able to grasp the emotional context. This research sets out to investigate Mauro Giuliani’s musical upbringing, influences, performance style and ability to compose in a tasteful way so as to appeal to the mass market of amateurs that desired to have opera music dispersed in their homes. Ideas of instrumentation, voice type, vocal quality and tone colour, keys, tempi and expressive indications can be immediately identified upon perusal of the original aria scores, and provide important clues for guitarists about how to approach the Rossiniane. This research also looks at the specific vocal and guitar techniques that were widely employed at the time and suggests ways in which a modern guitarist performing on a modern classical guitar can try to emulate these techniques for audiences of today. Also included are score excerpts, audio examples and a case study of Giuliani’s arrangement of a Rossini aria in his Rossiniane, “Assisa a piè d’un salice”, from Otello. Con questa tesi mi propongo di offrire uno strumento biografico, bibliografico e documentario che possa contribuire alla conoscenza e allo studio delle opere di Giambattista Giuliani, notevole letterato della seconda metà dell’Ottocento, al suo tempo celebre commentatore di Dante e sensibile interprete della questione della lingua italiana nell’Ottocento. Considerata la mancanza di una bibliografia critica su Giuliani, nonostante gli apporti alla ricerca venuti dagli studi di Carlo Dionisotti, Claudio Marazzini, Luca Serianni, è risultata necessaria un’indagine complessiva della figura e delle opere dello studioso, che non solo definisse la sua posizione nel quadro della storiografia letteraria, ma che evidenziasse anche i suoi rapporti con il contesto politico - culturale del secolo XIX. Un ruolo fondamentale in questo lavoro è stato rivestito dall’accurata analisi delle opere edite da Giuliani e dalla ricerca documentaria con la riscoperta, a cui mi sono dedicata con successo, di importanti documenti inediti che hanno permesso la ricostruzione della vita di Giuliani, attraverso la fitta rete di rapporti intessuta con illustri esponenti del mondo intellettuale e politico dell’epoca; l’analisi dello sviluppo diacronico della posizione assunta dal padre somasco nei dibatti intorno alla lingua italiana che caratterizzarono l’Ottocento; la messa in evidenza delle implicazioni tra gli studi danteschi e quelli linguistici portati avanti da Giuliani, con particolare attenzione al metodo da lui adottato in questi campi d’indagine.

THE FLUTE AND GUITAR DUO: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EQUAL PARTNERSHIP By Lisa Marie Schroeder December 2015 The 21st century flute and guitar duo literature contains equal parts of intricate melodic and harmonic content, challenging both players with standard and contemporary techniques. In the past, beginning with the late seventeen hundreds, the repertoire for this combination consisted of simple flute melodies and sparse, accompanimental guitar parts. When did an equal partnership begin developing between the instruments and how are professional duos guiding this change? For the research of this document, a survey was drafted and sent to 104 professional flute and guitar duos around the globe, resulting in 51 duos completing and returning the questionnaire. Of the 51 duos that returned the survey, 48 duos qualified as professional and three duos were disqualified. The general consensus reached is that the flute and guitar duo has developed into an equal partnership in the last 30 years, accomplished through music with more substantial parts for both instruments, beginning with the legendary Histoire du Tango by Ástor Piazzolla. My hope is that those who read this document will understand the need for more flute and guitar music containing equal parts, thus inspiring commissions. I hope, too, that the lists of pieces revealed by seasoned flute and guitar duos (located in Appendix B and C), will be a useful tool for all flute and guitar duos, especially those starting out in the genre. This document is essential to the university flute and guitar studios and beginning duos in selecting pieces in which both performers will learn and grow as instrumentalists and chamber musicians.

The analysis of her diaries and the registers in her canonization process show how much her perseverant life style, marked by periods of intensive fasting, the violence against her own body, and her search for holiness under the benevolent eye of the Church associates her with modern anorexic symptoms. This paper aims at setting up a parallel between two kinds of relationship: that of Christianity s women saints and martyrs with the Church (the Holy Mother), and that of anorexic girls with their mothers. Accomplices of a lethal project, these pairs comply with the appealing of a perfection ideal. Although separated by several centuries, they present the same symptoms and manifestations of a timeless superego that is passed down from generation to generation. A análise de seus diários e os registros do processo de canonização mostram quanto seu modo de vida perseverante, marcado por períodos de jejum intenso, pela violência contra o próprio corpo e busca da santidade - sob os olhos complacentes da Igreja -, aproxima-a das pacientes com sintomas anoréxicos de hoje. A tese estabelece, também, um paralelo entre dois tipos de relação: o das santas e mártires do Cristianismo com a Igreja (a Santa Madre), e a das meninas anoréxicas com suas mães. Cúmplices em um projeto mortífero, essas duplas atendem ao apelo de um ideal de perfeição. Distantes umas das outras por vários séculos, apresentam os mesmos sintomas, manifestações de um superego atemporal transmitido através das gerações. Scopo di questa tesi è verificare la falsificazione, attraverso l'analisi testuale, di due Carmina Apologetica ad opera del gesuita Jerónimo Román de la Higuera, già postulata da Nicolaus Antonius nel 1672 e riproposta da Jacques-Paul Migne due secoli più tardi, in virtù di alcune incongruenze tra quanto scritto nei testi e gli avvenimenti storici, che si aggiungevano alla fama di falsario che l'autore si era conquistato già in vita. Le poesie erano state editate nel Seicento dall'umanista Lorenzo Ramírez de Prado, in nota a un Chronicon Luitprandi, sulla base degli appunti del de la Higuera, senza tuttavia verificarne l'autenticità. Attraverso lo studio della vita di Giuliano di Toledo (642-690), del contesto storico-sociale in cui essa si inserisce e mediante l'analisi testuale dei due Carmina, si cercano di individuare le motivazioni che hanno spinto lo studioso gesuita alla scelta del nome del vescovo visigoto per l'attribuzione dei propri testi.

Carl Justi fu il primo a notare nel 1899 certi «echi ghibertiani» all’interno dei dodici rilievi, raffiguranti Storie dell’Antico e del Nuovo Testamento, nel suo saggio a introduzione di una delle celebri guide compilate da Karl Baedeker dedicata alla penisola iberica. L’argomento non tardò a suscitare l’interesse della comunità scientifica, soprattutto in seguito alla scoperta di numerosi documenti dei Llibres de Obra della Cattedrale, pubblicati nel 1909 dal canonico José Sanchis y Sivera, in cui emerse per la prima volta il nome di un generico «Juliá lo florentí» che dal 1418 lavorava l’alabastro in una bottega adiacente alla Seu e risultava riscuotere periodicamente il compenso di 70 fiorini aragonesi per ogni coppia di scene consegnate alla committenza. Anche Sanchis y Sivera accolse l’intuizione di Justi, notando l’evidente consonanza tra i rilievi e la Porta Nord del battistero di Firenze4, riconducendone l’autore ad un artista vicino alla bottega di Lorenzo Ghiberti: «es muy probable que este Julià florentí fuese algún discípulo de Ghiberti, pues en todos los relieves se demuestran las trazas del estilo de este célebre escultor». Le relevé d’architecture constitue « la toute première forme de connaissance », « la somme des opérations, du mesurage et des analyses qui vont permettre la compréhension et la documentation du bien architectural dans son ensemble […] ». Nécessaire à la conservation des biens culturels, le relevé architectural est aussi source de réflexion sur l’histoire de l’architecture et son usage, car ses méthodes sont élaborées dès la fin du XVe siècle, dans le cadre des investigations menées sur les vestiges de l’architecture antique. Devenue discipline, la pratique du relevé s’érige en lien fondamental entre recherche « archéologique » et création architecturale, et apparaît comme la meilleure des formations pour les artistes souhaitant devenir architectes. Ceux-ci s’aventurent hors des ateliers, dans une véritable école d’architecture à ciel ouvert dont le siège se trouve à Rome. Sources importantes pour la connaissance de l’Antique, sa réception et son appropriation par les artistes de la Renaissance, les dessins de relevé de cette période peuvent être également envisagés comme le résultat d’un processus analytique, qui nécessite une pratique et un langage spécifiques. Cet aspect, ainsi que l’histoire et les spécificités d’un corpus exceptionnel, sont au centre de ce travail de recherche. Les dessins de relevé conservés pour la Renaissance, relativement nombreux, peuvent être disparates et les auteurs parfois difficiles à identifier avec certitude. C’est l’une des raisons qui nous a conduit à étudier le corpus de Giuliano da Sangallo et plus particulièrement ses deux albums, le codex Barberini (Barb. Lat. 4424, Rome, Bibliothèque apostolique vaticane) et le carnet de Sienne (S. IV. 8, Sienne, Bibliothèque communale des Intronati). Non seulement leur attribution à l’architecte florentin ne fait pas débat, mais ils résultent d’un assemblage conscient de dessins choisis, réalisés à divers moments de sa carrière ; des dessins d’architecture, pour beaucoup des relevés, mais aussi des projets, ainsi que quelques vues et des dessins mécaniques. Cet ensemble apparaît comme une biographie graphique, où chaque dessin peut être rapporté à un épisode de la vie professionnelle de Giuliano da Sangallo, ce qui contribue à éclairer son histoire, parfois lacunaire. Il s’agit d’un corpus tangible, qui permet une approche globale de la question du relevé d’architecture tout en révélant l’évolution des préoccupations de l’architecte et de sa maîtrise de la restitution graphique, dans laquelle sa rigueur analytique s’allie à des interprétations toutes personnelles, et à une grande sensibilité dans le traitement. Giuliano da Sangallo semble faire la transition, autour de 1500, entre une génération qui expérimente les codes d’une représentation proprement architecturale et celle qui, ceux-ci élaborés, les applique de manière systématique. Par l’analyse de ses dessins nous cherchons à mettre en lumière ses capacités d’analyse sur le terrain, ses procédés de restitution graphique et sa manière de s’approprier et de diffuser l’information issue du relevé. On peut alors constater que les dessins de relevé constituent une typologie particulière dans le dessin d’architecture en général, et nécessitent une approche dont nous avons tenté, dans cette thèse, de fournir axes et méthodes<br>The architectural survey is “the very first form of knowledge”, “the sum of operations, measurement and analysis that will allow the understanding and documentation of the architecture in general [...]”. Instrumental in the conservation of cultural property, the architectural survey is also a source of reflection on the history and purposes of architecture, since its methods were developed as early as the end of the fifteenth century, as part of the investigations carried out on the remains of ancient architecture. Once architecture became a discipline in its own right, the survey enabled the architect to analyse ancient buildings from an “archaeological” perspective whilst at the same time offering a seemingly endless source of inspiration for architectural innovation. It was thus considered to be the best training for artists wishing to become architects and venture out of the workshops, in a real open-air architecture school with headquarters in Rome. As an important source for the knowledge of the Antique, its reception and its appropriation by the artists of the Renaissance, the survey drawings of this period can also be considered as the result of an analytical process, which required the development of a practice and a specific language. This research explores precisely these issues, focusing the history and specificities of Giuliano da Sangallo’s exceptional corpus and in particular on his two albums, the codex Barberini (Barb. Lat., 4424, Rome, Vatican Apostolic Library) and the Sienese book (S IV, 8, Siena, Communal Library of Intronati). Giuliano’s work is exceptional for two main reasons: the first is that his drawings have a secure attribution to him that has never been challenged. This is particularly unusual, since attribution is a thorny problem in the study of Renaissance architectural drawings. The second important characteristic of Giuliano’s work is that his Vatican and Sienese albums result from a conscious assembly of selected drawings made at various moments of his career. These include architectural drawings, mostly surveys, but also projects, as well as some views and mechanical drawings. This set appears as a graphic biography, where each drawing can be related to an episode of Giuliano da Sangallo’s professional life, thus shedding light on his sometimes fragmentary biography. It is a tangible corpus, which allows for a global approach to the question of the architectural survey while at the same time revealing how the concerns of the architect and his mastery of graphic rendering evolved over time, combining analytical rigor with more personal interpretations, and with great sensibility for each individual case. Giuliano da Sangallo is a pivotal figure who, around 1500, represented the bridge between a generation that was still experimenting with architectural representation and another which systematically applied the representational rules codified by their predecessors. Through the analysis of his drawings, this study highlights Giuliano’s analytical ability in the field, his process of graphic rendering and the ways he appropriated and then disseminated the information acquired during the survey. Providing specific analytical tools for their, this research therefore demonstrates that survey drawings represent a particular typology of architectural design in general

Qu’est-ce qu’un dispositif d’accompagnement et qu’est-ce que l’activité sociale du même nom ? Ce travail s’interroge sur les modalités d’organisation de la relation d’accompagnement dans un contexte - celui des dispositifs - où elle est privée des étayages habituels de la relation d’aide et où, dans le même temps, elle est réaffirmée avec force comme un niveau pertinent de résolution de problèmes. L’hypothèse centrale de cette recherche montre comment les situations institutionnelles sont configurées par les dispositifs comme le lieu d’un travail relationnel, au cours duquel les acteurs investissent les marges de manœuvre qui leur sont imparties pour construire le sens et la validité de la relation dans laquelle ils se trouvent engagés, eu égard aux problèmes qu’elle leur permet de prendre en compte et de traiter. L’accompagnement est donc appréhendé comme un processus, un travail coproduit par l’usager et le professionnel, et dont les phases successives ne sont pas prescrites institutionnellement. L’enquête de terrain établit d’abord quelles sont les différentes configurations de la relation à l’œuvre dans les premiers dispositifs (MLJ, MECS, DECLIC) ; ensuite, l’analyse se concentre plus spécifiquement sur deux dispositifs dits d’accompagnement : TRACE concerne l’accompagnement des parcours d’insertion professionnelle de jeunes âgés entre seize et vingt-cinq ans ; le SASEP consiste en l’accompagnement de parents repérés comme rencontrant certaines difficultés dans l’éducation de leurs enfants. Il ressort de l’enquête empirique une forme typique d’association entre les professionnels et les usagers, laquelle gagne à être étudiée à partir de la notion de pacte. L’ordre pactisé désigne un agencement jamais stabilisé et donc toujours problématique pour les acteurs, entre des situations sociales contraignantes et fortement déstabilisantes pour celui qui les affronte ; mais aussi, des personnes physiques engagées dans un travail d’enquête visant à circonscrire les contours d’un problème tel qu’il se pose pour celui qui en fait l’expérience, et dans l’improvisation d’une méthode articulant des ressources morales et pratiques susceptibles d’étayer son action ; enfin, un environnement pratique peu codifié (le dispositif) où s’ancrent les échanges entre professionnels et usagers, appelant une régulation idoine passant par des engagements de gré à gré pris in situ au cours de la discussion<br>What is an accompaniment device and how can the social activity bearing the same name be defined? The present research aims at questioning the terms and conditions under which the relation of assistance is designed. It is a context – that of the devices – which while depriving it of its usual propping of the relation of assistance, promotes it as a relevant level to the resolving of problems. The central assumption in our work focuses on how some institutional situations have been set up by those devices as a relational workspace. The actors inside that workspace use every prerogative at their disposal to shape the meaning and the validity of the relationship they are involved in. In so doing, they are driven to consider and resolve a given number of obstacles. Assistance can therefore be defined as a process, a co production by the professional and the user, which successive stages are not institutionally stipulated. The present field investigations determine what the various configurations of the relation are in a first set of devices (MLJ, MECS, DECLIC); our analysis will then try to go deeper in the study of two of the so called accompaniment devices: TRACE for what concerns the monitoring of the process of professional integration for young people between 16 and 25; and SASEP: an assistance device for those parents who have been spotted as facing some difficulties in the education of their children. To conclude, a worthwhile interest of our empirical survey is to reveal a typical form of association existing between professionals and users. Notre travail propose une comparaison et une analyse en parallèle de documents comptables de marchands-banquiers florentins à Lyon à la fin du Moyen Age, Giuliano da Gagliano, marchand-banquier travaillant pour le compte des Medici et la compagnie d’Alamanno et Jacopo Salviati. Les sources comptables, conservées dans les archives italiennes, permettent de conduire une analyse des pratiques marchandes et les fonctionnements internes des entreprises et offrent un autre point de vue que celui des sources françaises sur la présence et le rôle des Florentins à Lyon. Notre étude met ainsi en lumière les stratégies d’affaires de compagnies florentines très différentes l’une de l’autre et leurs réseaux politiques et commerciaux pour une période mal connue. Giuliano da Gagliano est un marchand au service de compagnies comme celle des Medici et des Bartolini et il mène des activités plus politiques que commerciales. La compagnie Salviati, quant à elle, est une compagnie marchande de grande envergure qui trouve à Lyon l’implantation nécessaire pour une compagnie spécialisée en activités d’import-export. Enfin, notre travail replace leurs parcours familiaux et leurs choix politiques et commerciaux dans le contexte politique florentin, visibles dans le mode de constitution des archives Salviati<br>Our work offers a comparison and an analysis in parallel with account books of Florentine market bankers in Lyon, at the end of the Middle Ages: Giuliano da Gagliano, a market banker working for the Medici account and the Alamanno &amp; Jacopo Salviati company. The account books, kept in the Italian archives, allow us to conduct an analysis of marketing practices and the internal runnings of companies, and offer another point of view other than that of the French sources of the presence and the role of the Florentines in Lyon. Our study also brings to light the Florentine companies’ strategy matters, which are very different from each other, and their political and commercial networks for an unknow period. Giuliano da Gagliano is a merchant who works for other companies such as that of Medici and Bartolini and which lead the more political and commercial activities. As for the Salviati company, it is a large-scale marketing company which finds, in Lyon, the necessary implantation for a specialist company in the imports-exports field. Finally, our work replaces their family journeys and their political and commercial choices in the Florentine political context, which are clear in the mode of composition of the Salviati archives
