Full textThe present PhD thesis is divided into two parts: the first one regards a numerical study on the mechanical behavior of adhesive joints; the second one, regards the study on the bearing behavior of bolted joints made of GFRP varying the fiber inclination angle. Adhesive joints. In this part a mathematical model for studying the equilibrium problem of adhesive joints between FRP adherents is presented. In particular, double and single-lap joints, both in the case of normal and shear/flexure stresses are considered. The problem is non linear due to the cohesive constitutive law adopted for modeling the interface. On the contrary, the adherents are supposed to be indefinitely linear elastic. The possibility to uncouple the problem of shear/flexure from the extensional one, as well as disregard the mutual effects between the normal and tangential stresses acting at the joint interfaces is also assumed. As highlighted in literature, this hypothesis allows results which are sufficiently correct from a technical perspective when the mechanical characteristics of the adherents are almost the same, as supposed in the present paper. A second hypothesis is that the total fracture energy is additionally broken down in a term relative to mode I of fracture (opening) and in a term relative to mode II of fracture (sliding). Within such a framework it is possible to trace back the examined equilibrium problems to those of simpler auxiliary structural schemes, where the mechanical behavior of the adhesive is modeled through two sets of independent interfacial springs capable of characterizing the normal and transversal interactions, respectively. The adherents are modeled following the hypotheses of the beam technical theory. A simple and efficient iterative procedure for solving the aforementioned problems is also proposed. Five dimensionless parameters which influence the design problem of the joints are identified. Several examples of the ultimate domains of the interface between the adherents are also presented as well as comparisons with some results reported in literature. Bolted joints. In this part an experimental analysis on the bearing failure mode of composite laminates have been carried out. In particular, the effects of fibre inclination angle and laminate stacking sequence on the bearing strength have been analyzed. To perform the experimental investigation, have been tested two types of laminates: unidirectional and cross-ply. In particular the stacking sequence of the unidirectional laminates was [CSM/08/CSM], while for the cross-ply laminates were used two different stacking sequence: [(CSM/06/906)s] and [(CSM/03/903)2]s, where the number of plies and the thickness is constant. The experimental results have shown that the bearing ultimate load depends significantly on fiber inclination angle respect to the load direction for both types of laminates considered. In particular, in the case of unidirectional laminates the experimental analysis carried out have underline that the maximum value of bearing ultimate load was obtained when its direction is parallel to that of fibers. As expected the lowest value is reached when the load direction is orthogonally to fiber one, with a total reduction of the ultimate bearing load equal to 32%. Also in the case of cross-ply laminates analysis have shown a reduction of aforementioned load when fiber inclination angle increased respect to its direction. In this case the lowest value of the bearing load is reached for an angle equal to 45°. Furthermore, the experimental analysis on cross-ply laminates have also underline that in terms of bearing ultimate load, the difference between the two stacking sequence considered is no more than 5% when the laminate thickness and the number of plies is constant.
