Abstract: In this article, I examine the paisley shawl within and through two paintings, Portrait of a Devonian (ca. 1908) and The Paisley Shawl (ca. 1910), by Glasgow School of Art director Francis H. Newbery (1855–1946). The paintings feature the same sitter and were completed decades after the shawl declined as a feature of British fashion. When young migrants enter a new community, are they able to acquire the community’s sociolinguistic norms? In this thesis, I examine the speech of 14 adolescents who were born in Poland, and who now attend a high school in the East End of Glasgow. I spend two years in this high school, conducting ethnographic analysis and collecting speech recordings. The research aims to address teacher shortages by generating a better understanding of the employee group termed career change teachers (CCTs) – individuals who enter the teaching profession after 25 years of age from other careers – by informing policy and school practices that support their retention.
