Tyson, Rachel Caroline. "Medieval glass vessels in England AD 1200-1500 : a survey." Thesis, Durham University, 1996. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1223/.

Full text
Abstract:
A considerable amount of vessel glass of the period 1200 to 1500 has been excavated in England, particularly since the 1960s. This thesis conducts a survey of the vessel glass from museums and archaeology units, from over two hundred sites across England. The glass includes goblets, beakers, bowls, jugs and other decorative vessels, lamps, some liturgical vessels, flasks, urinals, distilling and other 'industrial' vessels, from England, Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. The glass was catalogued, and the functions, dates and production areas of the vessels were examined, to provide a basis

Abstract:
The principal aim of this thesis is the evaluation of the social significance of core-glass vessels in the Egyptian sphere of influence in the later New Kingdom, based on the technology, typology and distribution of the vessels. To assess the technology involved, the assemblage of manufacturing debris from Amanra was catalogued and examined. This material was then used to assess the potential techniques employed. The evidence suggests that a number of methods were used to form vessels, with trailing on, coating in powdered glass and press moulding, probable techniques. This was reinforced by a

This study combines a theoretical modelling of dexterity with a practical apprenticeship in glass-working in order to examine a group of core-formed glass alabastra from Mediterranean Group I (c.525 to c.400 BCE). Core-formed vessels were made by forming glass around an internal mould which was scraped out after the vessel had cooled. The core-forming tradition lasted from c.1500 BCE until c.100 BCE. Mediterranean Group I is of interest because of the wide variety of consistency displayed in body shaping, rim and handle making, and decoration. To understand this variety it was necessary to und

The thesis aims to explore the distribution of glass in the Balkan territories of the late Roman and early Byzantine Empire based on an integrated research on glass vessels from the late 3rd to early 7th centuries AD from three site assemblages in present-day Bulgaria (Dichin, Odartsi, and Serdica). The category of artefacts, i.e. glass vessels, is deliberately chosen since they provide the opportunity to investigate both their ‘archaeology’ (in terms of vessel morpho-typology, decoration, manufacturing techniques, etc.) and their ‘chemistry’ (in terms of chemical composition) as two aspects o

Abstract The present research focuses on the archaeometric study of glasses circulating in north-eastern Italy between Roman times and Late Antiquity with the aim of clarifying raw materials and production technologies. Unlike the approach generally used in the study of glass, which focuses on one of the two classes of materials, vessels and vitreous mosaic tesserae are here addressed in parallel, in order to have a wider picture on the circulation of glass and glass-technologies in the area. The glass vessels here examined come from the most important north-Adriatic harbours of the consider

Abstract:
This Ph.D thesis describes an investigation into the operation of the Blue Circle Cauldon Works precalciner vessel. The vessel is part of the cement making plant and it serves the purpose of providing a furnace that is maintained at approximately 900C to calcine the limestone in the raw meal prior to cementation in the kiln. At Cauldon, tyre chips are used as a support fuel. It was the aim of this work to predict the likely behaviour of the gases and particles in the precalciner by using Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling. The commercial code Fluent was used. Abstract:
The aims of this thesis are twofold. The first is concerned with the establishment of a typology for vessel glass in England between 1500 and 1640. There has been no morphological classification for glass of this period and one is constructed in this thesis from museum collections, published and unpublished material derived from archaeological excavations. The second aim of this thesis is to explore the way that glass vessels were used in Tudor and early Stuart society. The rise of consumerism and role of consumption in early modern Europe has been explored by a number of scholars, but there h

Abdominal aortic aneurysms are a leading cause of death in the U.S. where 14,000 people die from aneurysm rupture and 178,000 are diagnosed each year. A novel alternative treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms has been proposed, where a biodegradable polymer scaffold is photopolymerized in situ around the exterior of the aneurysm. This scaffold will mechanically constrain the aneurysm from further expansion, and will deliver a drug, doxycycline, to treat the underlying biological cause of the disease. In order for device development, a suitable polymer must be designed with appropriate mecha
