Abstract:
In this dissertation I discuss how observations of the maximum glitch occurred in a certain pulsar provides a test for the microscopic physics of neutron star interiors, in particular the pinning forces (a parameter which effectively describes the strength of the vortex-lattice interaction at the mesoscopic scale). Conversely, by fixing the input parameters by taking estimates from recent literature, it is possible to estimate the mass of a glitching pulsar. A proof of concept of this thesis is given by constructing a quantitative model for pulsar rotational dynamics that can consistently encode state of the art models of the pinning force between vortices and ions in the crust, as well as the stratified structure of a neutron star. This point is far from being secondary as most studies on pulsar glitches are based on body-averaged models or differential models that tacitly assume a cylindrical symmetry, not consistent with the spherically layered structure.

Abstract:
Even if a cryptographic algortihm could be mathematically secure, its physical implementation could be targeted by several attacks. This thesis focus on time-based fault injection mechanisms used for physical cryptanalysis of secure circuits.First, practical fault injections have been performed on a hardware AES implementation using non-invasive attacks : static and dynamic variations of the power supply voltage, frequency, temperature and electromagnetic environement. Then a comparison of these obtained faults led us to conclude that these different injection means share a common injection mecanism : timing constraints violations. An on-chip voltmeter has been designed and implemented to observe internal disturbences due to voltage glitchs. These observations led to a better understanding of the fault injection mecanism and to a better temporal accuracy. Then, a contermeasure has been designed and its effectiveness against electromagnetic attacks has been studied. Because of the electromagnetic pulses local effects, the aera effectively protected by the countermeasure is limited. The implementation of several countermeasures has been considered in order to extend the protected aera. Finally, a new attack path using the countermeasure detection threshold variations has been proposed and experimentaly validated. This attack exploit the electrical coupling between the AES and the coutnermeasure. Because of this coupling the countermeasure sensitivity variations are related to data handled by the AES

This work brings questions related to glitch music, genre linked with the aesthetic of failure that arose in the 1990's. It is divided in two parts. In the first part, the research starts with definitions about glitch and glitch music, trying to outline a general context that the genre has developed. We also bring conceptual questions about "failure" trying to point out the use of error as an aesthetic in music. In the second part, we show three perspectives of different approaches of glitch in three different composers: Yasunao Tone, Oval and Alva Noto. Lastly, this work intends to open new discussions concerning what glitch music genre is, and what it includes.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis is intended to highlight the role that glitch can have in creation. I pose the question of what happens when we introduce a deliberate disruption in a creative act? How do we treat what we perceive as flaws and mistakes, and what can happen when we explore what has once been rejected as broken and obsolete? These questions have arisen partly from the curiosity about the unknown and a constant search for new forms of expression, but also from criticism. The technological development my generation is experiencing is moving us forward at an ever increasing pace, and it leaves me inquisitive about how we relate to the value of media artifacts when consumerism is becoming more and more prevalent. By studying glitches and their resulting art forms, second-hand and its culture, as well as media archeology, I have formed a foundation on which to base my work. With a critical approach, I have used non-conventional methods and programs to edit and manipulate media, and reflected upon the results supported by both research and discussion with other people. I have explored digital glitches in media that I've worked with during my three years of study, but also traversed physical circuit boards and investigated what happens when a break is introduced in their expected flow. The result is a new approach to outdated technology, a new angle from which to view creativity and creation, and—hopefully—a shift in respect for our continued technological development.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on different aspects of ”Low Energy Design”. First, reversible logic, as it is the first attempt for low energy computing, is briefly dis- cussed. Then, we focus on dynamic energy saving in the combinational part of CMOS circuits. We propose a new method to reduce glitches based on dual threshold voltage technique. Simulation results report more than 16% average glitch reduction. We also show that combining dual-threshold to gate-sizingtechnique is very interesting for glitch filtering as it brings up to 27 % energy savings. In the third part of this dissertation, we have been interested in sub-threshold operation where the minimum energy can be achieved using a reduced supply voltage. Sub-threshold operation has been an efficient solution for energy-constrained applications with low speed requirements. However, it is very sensitive to process variability which can impact the robustness and effective performance of the circuit. We propose a model valid in sub and near threshold regions in order to correctly estimate the circuit performance in a variability aware analysis. We provide an analytical solution for the optimum supply voltage that minimizes the total energy per operation while considering variability effects. Spice simulations matches the analytical result to within 6%

Abstract:
Neutron stars are surely one of the most interesting astronomical objects: in no other place of the observable universe, in fact, matter is so compressed that the density reaches and overcomes the nuclear saturation value. This is a so extreme condition that in no terrestrial laboratory we can directly reproduce it in order to study its properties. Neutron stars are therefore a very fascinating research field that can bring us to a deeper understanding of this exotic matter, by modeling the observations of peculiar phenomena related to these stars. This thesis is focused on the pulsar glitches, which are rapid jumps in the rotational velocity of the star. Shortly after the first glitches were observed it was suggested that they could be due to a superfluid component in the stellar interior that could store angular momentum thanks to the pinning interaction between superfluid vortexes and crustal lattice. This qualitative idea suggests that the problem must be faced by merging results which come from the microphysics point of view into a more macroscopic simulation. In this thesis we deal with the evaluation of the vortex--nuclei interaction from the mesoscopic point of view: we perform a realistic calculation of the pinning force per unit length for the inner crust of a neutron star. We find that this mesoscopic interaction is $\approx10^{15} \mbox{ dyn/cm}$, much smaller than previous calculations but still enough to explain glitches. A similar approach has been adopted also in the calculation of the pinning force in the core: if protons in the interior are in a type II superconducting state, an interaction between magnetic flux tubes and rotational vortexes is possible and must be estimated (in case of type I superconductivity the interactions are much weaker). Our results indicate that even in this case, the interaction between vortexes and flux tubes will be significantly weaker than in the crust, as the force per unit length is $\approx 10^{12} - 10^{13} \mbox{ dyn/cm}$. These results are used in static models (based on the "snowplow" model) which can reproduce the physical observable parameters and also provide a mean to infer the masses of the most frequent glitching stars: we propose a unified description of the glitch phenomenon both for small and large glitchers and we analyze the interesting correlation between mass and glitching strength. The whole temporal evolution of a glitch can be followed thanks to the development of a dynamical model. The multifluids formalism is implemented in a consistent simulation, which take into account realistic physical inputs like equation of state, entrainment and drag forces: the rise and the recovery of a glitch is analyzed in connection with the relevant parameters of the model, in order to understand more deeply all the aspects of this phenomenon. We also compare our simulations with the observational data of the frequent glitchers in order to estimate the masses of the pulsars. It's noteworthy the fact that the results are in good agreement with the ones obtained with the static approach, showing again the same mass--glitching strength relation.

Abstract:
Magnetars are neutron stars showing dramatic X-ray and soft γ-ray outbursting behaviour that is thought to be powered by their intense internal magnetic fields. Like conventional neutron stars in the form of radio pulsars, magnetars show sudden changes in their rotation rate, called "glitches," during which angular momentum is believed to be transferred between the solid outer crust and the superfluid component of the inner crust. Hitherto, the several hundred observed glitches in radio pulsars and magnetars have involved a sudden spin-up of the star, due presumably to the interior superfluid rotating faster than the crust. In this thesis, we report on X-ray timing observations of the magnetar 1E 2259+586 , using the Swift X-ray Telescope, which we show exhibited a clear "anti-glitch" – a sudden spin down. We show that this event, like some previous magnetar spin-up glitches, was accompanied by multiple X-ray radiative changes and a significant spin-down rate change. This event, if of origin internal to the star, is unpredicted in models of neutron star spin-down and is suggestive of differential rotation in the neutron star, further supporting the need for a rethinking of glitch theory for all neutron stars.

Abstract:
In this project we study the three fundamental theories that explain the phenomenon of superconductivity: The London theory, the Ginzburg-Landau theory and the BCS theory. We review works by several authors who utilized these theories as the basis for their investigation. In our literature review we study the behavior of single and multivortex states in mesoscopic thin superconducting discs whose dimensions are comparable to the penetration depth λ and the coherence length ξ of a superconductor. We learn about the types of phase transitions that the vortex configurations undergo and the stability of the resulting states. Our aim is to investigate how vortex configurations reorganize after phase transitions and whether their reorganization releases any energy into the system of vortices in the disc. If so, then what is the precise mechanism through which the released energy is transferred into the disc? We aim to answer this question and generalize the results to neutron star interiors in order to explain and predict the behavior of pulsar glitches.

Abstract:
Neutron stars are among the densest objects in the Universe, making them a perfect laboratory to study nuclear matter under extreme conditions. Pulsars – rapidly rotating magnetised neutron stars – are one of their possible manifestations, being observed as an extremely regular periodic emission in the radio spectrum. This radiation is produced by converting their rotational energy and, because of this, pulsars are expected to spin down. Some of them, however, have been observed exhibiting sudden accelerations in their rotation, also known as glitches. Nowadays, pulsar glitches are interpreted as the manifestation of vortex dynamics in the internal neutron superfluid, which lags behind the observable charged component in spinning down, occasionally releasing angular momentum to it and giving rise to a glitch. In this work, we will present three different observational characteristics of a glitching pulsar – its largest glitch, its average acceleration due to glitches and its short-time evolution after a glitch – and we will try to extract information about the neutron star from each of them. In particular, we will try to set constraints on the mass of the star, the moment of inertia of its reservoir component and several other quantities tied to the glitch phenomenon, with the ultimate goal of increasing our knowledge about the properties of matter at densities above those of terrestrial nuclei.

Abstract:
This work aims to review the progress in understanding the underlining physics of pulsar glitches: beginning from the pedagogical development of the subject to eventually motivating the use of AdS/CFT techniques in studying a certain class of condensed matter systems. The foundation of this work is built upon the Gross Pitaevskii (GP) model of super-fluidity applied to the interior matter of neutron stars, where the condensate wave function acts as the order parameter of the macroscopic coherence theory. The excitation modes of the field equations are found to be solitonic vortices, which then go on to present a theoretical basis to the plausible theories of pulsar glitches involving vortex dynamics. The second major thrust of this thesis is in reviewing the application of AdS/CFT in study of strongly-coupled condensed matter systems, with special attention to the models of holographic superfluidity that admit vortex-like solutions. The basic identification of the characteristic free energy configuration of global vortices in the AdS/CFT prescription enables to motivate its use in studying the pulsar glitch mechanism. The last part of this work traces the conclusions of this review and attempts to present the current state-of-progress of the field with its extensive domain of purview and open lines of inquiry.

This work addresses the following research question: Can we detect videogame glitches using Convolutional Neural Networks? Focusing on the most common types of glitches, texture glitches (Stretched, Lower Resolution, Missing, and Placeholder). We first systematically generate a dataset with both images with texture glitches and normal samples.  To detect the faulty images we try both Classification and Semantic Segmentation approaches, with a clear focus on the former. The best setting in classification uses a ShuffleNetV2 architecture and obtains precisions of 80.0%, 64.3%, 99.2%, and 97.0% in the respective glitch classes Stretched, Lower Resolution, Missing, and Placeholder. All of this with a low false positive rate of 6.7%. To complement this study, we also discuss how the models extrapolate to different graphical environments, which are the main sources of confusion for the model, how to estimate the confidence of the network, and ways to interpret the internal behavior of the models.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the contextualization of my artistic practice, which explores digital glitch as a disruptive force and an aesthetic treatment in the contemporary technological world. While the body of work draws on the methodology of glitch art, this paper attempts to relate the idea of glitch to a wider range of philosophical and artistic frameworks stemming from Lettrism, Situationist International, Punk, and Nihilism. The aim of this investigation of a digital disturbance through its categorization into natural, stimulated and assimilated glitch, is to facilitate an understanding of the glitch event as both something threatening and attractive, while it transitions from a spontaneous to a controlled process in a photoreal image. The passing of the destructive glitch from life to art is placed against the backdrop of the apocalypse, which one may imagine as a literal and metaphorical disaster in the physical world and value systems of western society.

This practice-led research aims to present a body of artwork that responds to glitches found in contemporary action video games. By utilising the visual capabilities of a virtual reality headset, I have produced a series of artworks that showcase the sensory effects that a glitch has on a player’s game world. The artwork that I have developed translates the materiality of traditional drawing into a digital space to visualise the qualities of glitches.

Abstract:
An eleven-year series of radio timing observations of 0833- 45 (Vela) and PSR 1641- 45 is presented. During this time, five large spin-ups ("glitches") were observed in 0833- 45 and one in 1641-45. The stellar response to these events is investigated, and the three relat ively long complete inter-glitch intervals in 0833-45 are modeled. The results are of relevance to studies of the interiors of neutron stars. The initial aim of the project - to obtain good observational coverage of large glitches in the Vela pulsar - was successfully achieved, and high quality observations of the periods between glitches were obtained as a by-product. The results of the analysis presented here provide support for the existence of both linear and non-linear coupling in the Vela pulsar, and put a limit on the former in PSR 1641- 45. The recently observed existence of a rapidly recovering component of part of a glitch in Vela was verified in the subsequent glitch, although there is now evidence to contradict the suggestion that this component involves a particular region of the star that is implicated in every glitch. Observations of a recent glitch in the same pulsar have resolved a small component of the spin-up; such a component has not been reported for any other large glitch.

Abstract:
The past is a statement; the future a question. Henri Cartier-Bresson provides us with an interpretation of the “now” with the decisive moment and it is through this lens that I examine the glitch. Like the street photography style that Cartier-Bresson pioneered, the glitch artist role is not to simply create, but lies in inviting and reacting to conditions that will permit art to happen. Similar to the camera’s shutter being triggered, the glitch is initialized in a moment of uncertainty by our analog selves and is revealed to be dissident code that is set free from the pristine constructs of the digital format. As the glitch is an affective event that happens in real time, or in a moment, it can be recorded, captured and documented as a breakthrough of noise separated from the signal. As a culture, we tend to filter out and defend against the noise of the glitch while keeping the myth of perfect signal alive. I would suggest that we welcome the noise as a type of natural wilderness in the machine that reveals the illusion of the digital era and blurs the lines between transcription and transcoding.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how qualities of process errors in the moving image might be adapted and applied aesthetically in ways analogous to painterly gesture. In recent history, materialist film-makers, signal process artists and glitch artists have foregrounded these artefacts of process as a means to promote anti-illusionism in art. To achieve this, residual artefacts of faulty equipment became the work of art, independent of the original image, and without consideration for how such process artefacts might interact with the original content of the moving image. This thesis and the accompanying body of work argues that the material immediacy of the artefact can be retained whilst simultaneously complementing an original subject. In doing so, the work is a collaboration between artist and process resulting in the transformation of the artefact into a seemingly material gesture. Working in this mode opens up a space to properly explore the aesthetic potential of decay in the moving image.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes PGR, an architectural technique to reduce dynamic power via a glitch reduction strategy named GlitchLess, or to improve performance via clock skew scheduling (CSS) and delay padding (DP). It is integrated into VPR 5.0, and is invoked after the routing stage. Programmable delay elements (PDEs) are used as a novel architecture modification to insert delay on fiip- flop (FF) clock inputs, enabling all optimization steps to share it, avoiding multiple architecture modifications. This thesis investigates the trade- off between power and performance, and finding an appropriate compromise considering process variation and timing uncertainties. To facilitate realistic power estimates, a popular activity estimator, ACE, is modified with a new model to estimate glitching power, taking into account the analog behavior of glitch pulse width reduction as it travels along FPGA routing tracks. We show that the original glitch estimation method can underestimate glitching power by up to 48%, and overestimate by up to 15%. In terms of performance, an average of 15% speedup can be achieved via CSS alone, or up to 37% for individual circuits. Although delay padding only benefits a few circuits, the average improvement of those circuits is an additional 10% of the original period, or up to 23% for individual circuits. In addition, GlitchLess is performed on both the original VPR and post-CSS solutions. On average, 16% of glitching power can be eliminated, or up to 63% for individual circuits.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze how interfacing affects viewer experiences and viewer positions, and how glitch art online makes that effect visible. Glitch art is concerned with disruptions in the systems that govern how for instance photography is produced, circulated and displayed in a digital image flow. The system’s usually undisrupted operation emerges through the friction created between the key components of the study: the viewer, the photo-based mediation, and the interface where the two meet. These components are encircled by the relation between individual and system, whose increased integration with one another requires a sharper eye: a tactical spectatorship in response to how the interface of the image flow can turn the individual into a part of the system. The unfolding of such a spectatorship is investigated through three questions: What can a viewer see and do by interfacing with the website, and with what means? How is the photo-based material on the website produced, displayed and conceptualized? How does the website and its photo-based material – glitched and not glitched – position the viewer haptically and epistemologically? With a cross disciplinary approach, three media phenomenological case studies present glitch artworks in an online environment. The case study on Phillip Stearns’s project Year of the Glitch concerns the website’s index and archive pages as well as still images with a focus on camera reconstruction, verbal conceptualization, and image materiality. The case study on Rosa Menkman’s website Sunshine in My Throat includes index and artwork pages, two artworks with still and moving images as well as a thematization of the entire online environment being glitched. The case study on Evan Meaney’s project Ceibas Cycle focuses on the index page and an interface-based artwork, two video works as well as a portfolio of photographs that are not glitched. The timeliness of the case study materials – created between 2004 and 2012 – is anchored in systems aesthetics, in which technical problems are explored as a cultural critique since the 1960s. The qualitative analysis both emphasizes and problematizes experience, as a complement to quantitative studies about images in relation to a digital flow. The study analyzes how glitch art shapes experiences both by following the interface and by disrupting it. The effect of the underlying system thus appears in a material that has not yet been given an in-depth art historical analysis with a particular focus on the individual viewer. With such a focus, glitch is conceptualized as systemic friction in this study, which clarifies how the artworks online produce knowledge about the interface by providing the individual with a possibility of creating tactical breaks into the image flow. The results of the study consist of the ways of seeing that develop such a possibility – and they gain relevance as they make visible how the flow usually operates in invisible ways. These results point out that the experience of the artworks – and by extension, other experiences of images online – can alert viewers to their own activity within the image flow. If the system sets boundaries for experiences of and through the interface, a tactical spectatorship becomes possible when a glitch gives the individual an opportunity to try different positions towards these boundaries.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) present as common manifestation the limitation in the activities of daily living (ADL). In order to assess this limitation the Glittre ADL-test (TGlittre) was developed considering a standardized set of ADL-like activities which is known to be difficult for these patients. However, it is unknown what factors influence TGlittre performance and no reference equation for the test has been developed yet. Thus, the aim of this study was to establish a reference equation for TGlittre based on antropometric and demographic variables of apparently healthy subjects and to verify its reliability in a COPD patient sample. A hundred and fifty-six (80 males) adults, aged 40-80 years old, performed two TGlittre and had their weight, height and body mass index (BMI) measured. For the analysis it was considered the TGlittre shortest spent time. Data were described in mean±SD. For the normality analysis it was used the Shapiro-Wilk test. Correlation coefficients of Pearson or Spearman were used to verify the correlation between time in TGlittre (dependent variable) and age, sex, height, weight and BMI (independent variables). The stepwise multiple linear regression was used to derive the reference equation. For the analysis a p <0.05 value was considered, except in the case of multiple linear regression model that considered a p <0.10 value. The mean time to perform the TGlittre shortest spent time was 2.90 ± 0.45 (range 1.92 4.97 min). Age (r = 0.54, p<0.001), height (r = -0.29, p<0.001) and BMI (r = 0.15, p<0.06) showed significant correlation with TGlittre. Neither correlation was found with weight (r = -0.6, p=0.451) nor gender (r = -0.1, p=0.133). In the stepwise multiple linear regression analysis age and BMI were selected as predictors of TGlittre, explaning 35% (p<0.015) of the total variance. The derived reference equation was: TGlittrepred = 1.006 + (0.024 x age) + (0.019 x BMI). A reference equation for TGlittre was determined based on age and BMI as independent variables and can be useful for predicting the performance of adult patients and healthy subjects in TGlittre. Moreover the predicted values showed to be reliable when applied in COPD patients

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the way vulnerability among men is discussed and negotiated in relation to their notion of masculinity during a “killmiddag” (literally: dinner for boys). It also seeks to find in what way the participants relate to each other and the group in this specific context which in itself questions gender norms. The Swedish initiative “killmiddag”, launched in 2016, comes with a set of themes and discussion guides. This study is comprised of a group interview with three participants conducted in the formula of a regular “killmiddag” and two additional interviews with men who have previous experience with arranging these events. The study finds that the participants constantly relate to gender norms and discuss how they find it awkward to show sadness and talk about complex emotions with other men. They attribute this to a learned behaviour from both their upbringings, interactions with other men and the way norms are communicated through commercial mass culture. The study concludes that the participants show increased male vulnerability and sensitivity but at the same time show signs of conforming to some of the gender norms they are criticizing. By identifying with and validating each other the participants seem to practice vulnerability in order to better fit in with the group.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by systemic manifestations that result in significant limitation of functional capacity and hence the individual's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). Objective: to investigate the physiological response induced by the Glittre-ADL test (TGlittre) and to compare with the physiological response induced by the six-minute walk (6MWT) in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Methods: 15 patients with COPD aged 66 ± 8 years and with forced expiratory volume in one second of 40.0 ± 18.3% predicted were evaluated. Patients underwent spirometry before and after bronchodilator, anthropometric and body composition, London Chest Activity of Daily Living scale (LCADL) and Medical Research Council (MRC). On two different days, separated by one week, two exercise protocols were performed in random order: 6MWT and TGlittre. Patients had also their physical activity in daily life (AFVD) monitored on two consecutive days. The Shapiro-Wilk test of normality was used to assess data distribution. To compare the physiological response between 6MWT and TGlittre was used the paired t test or Wilcoxon. The coefficient of Pearson or Spearman was used to verify the association between variables. The level of significance was 5%. Results: The time spent in TGlittre correlated with the distance walked on 6MWT (r= -0.82, p <0.01). Patients spent 52.9 ± 13.9% of the monitored time in sitting position, 19.6 ± 5.7% standing, 14.6 ± 12.4% lying and 12.9 ± 4.7% of the time walking The time in sitting position was correlated with both the performance in TGlittre and in 6MWT (r= 0.56 and r = -0.60, respectively, p <0.05). There were no differences between the physiological parameters measured at baseline of TGlittre and 6MWT (p>0.05). Patients achieved a VO2 of 1258.2 ± 317.8 and 1176.5 ± 364.8 ml/min at the end of TGlittre and 6MWT, respectively (p> 0.05). The VO2 showed a plateau from the third lap in TGlittre and from the third minute in 6MWT. The VO2 measured at the end of TGlittre correlated with the VO2 measured at the end of 6MWT (r= 0.85, p <0.01). All physiological variables measured at the end of TGlittre were similar and correlated with those measured at the end of 6MWT. Conclusions: TGlittre is able to induce a metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular response similar to those induced by TC6min.

Abstract:
The globalization of integrated circuits fabrication involves several questions about the integrity of the fabricated circuits. Malicious modifications called Hardware Trojans (HT) can be introduced during the circuit production process. Due to the complexity of an integrated circuit, it is really difficult to find this kind of alterations. This work focuses on a non-destructive method of HT detection. We use the paths delays of the studied design as a channel to detect HT. A model to describe paths delays is defined. It takes into account two important parameters which are the experimental conditions and the process variations.Faults attacks by clock glitches based on timing constraints violations have been performed to measure data paths delays. Reliable circuits are used for reference. After validating the relevance of this channel to get information on the internal behavior of the targeted design, experimental detections of HT inserted on two different abstraction levels (RTL and after place and route) were achieved. Process variations are taken into consideration in the studies to detect if the tested circuits are infected

The Glittre AVD test (TGlittre) is a specific test to evaluate functional limitation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but it is not known whether it can be used to assess the capacity and performance of post-stroke patients. Objectives: To analyze the validation of TGlittre construct for hemiparetic patients due to stroke. METHODS: construct validity was analyzed using classical psychometry that established the use of well defined statistical methods, 30 hemiparetic adults after stroke and 20 healthy adults, matched in gender and age, according to eligibility criteria. The results were correlated to the 6-min walk test (TC6), time up and go (TUG) and functional independence measure scale (MIF) to analyze construct validity. The tests were randomized, performed on two consecutive days by the same evaluator. Data were submitted to the Shapiro Wilk normality test. The time of execution of the test between the groups was compared by the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: There was a strong and significant correlation between the AVD-Glittre versus the 6MT (r = -0.91, p <0.001), TUG (r = 0.82, p <0.001) 0.47, p <0.008). Conclusions: The AVD-Glittre was valid for evaluation of functional capacity and performance of hemiparetic patients after stroke. The Glittre AVD test is reliable when correlated with other tests already validated under different health conditions.

Abstract:
The implementation of a learning environment for young African American males, called the Glitch Game Testers, was launched in 2009. The development of this program was based on formative work that looked at the contrasting use of digital games between young African American males and individuals who chose to become computer science majors. Through analysis of cultural values and digital game play practices, the program was designed to intertwine authentic game development practices and computer science learning. The resulting program employed 25 African American male high school students to test pre-release digital games full-time in the summer and part-time in the school year, with an hour of each day dedicated to learning introductory computer science. Outcomes for persisting in computer science education are remarkable; of the 16 participants who had graduated from high school as of 2012, 12 have gone on to school in computing-related majors. These outcomes, and the participants' enthusiasm for engaging in computing, are in sharp contrast to the crisis in African American male education and learning motivation. The research presented in this dissertation discusses the formative research that shaped the design of Glitch, the evaluation of the implementation of Glitch, and a theoretical investigation of the way in which participants navigated conflicting motivations in learning environments.

CAPES
Heart failure (HF) is a cardiovascular syndrome with enormous impact on public health, leading to reduced functional capacity in terms of both physical limitations to activities of daily living as well as the implementation of physical exercises. Considered of great importance, functional capacity can be assessed by a variety of instruments such as questionnaires and field tests, and cardiopulmonary exercise test considered the gold standard. The Glittre ADL-Test is a submaximal functional test that seeks to represent the daily activities, since it involves a set of common tasks in everyday life. This paper is structured in the form of two original articles. The first article was to evaluate and establish a diagnostic value for the Glittre ADL-Test in adults with heart failure when compared to the gold standard was carried out accuracy analysis of the Glittre ADLTest performance time compared to the data peak VO2 CPX by using the cutoff point for the peak VO2 of 16 ml/kg/min from the Weber classification. The best cutoff point was of 258 second, with a sensitivity of 88.89% (95% CI 65.29 to 98.62) and a specificity of 70% (95% CI 45.72 to 88.11) with an area under the curve of 0.80 (95% CI 0.66 to 0.94 and p 0.001). The prevalence found in the study to low functional capacity (peak VO2 <16 ml / kg / min) was 47.3%, and for TTotal greater than 258 seconds found PPV of 72.73% (95% CI, 49, 78 to 89.2) and VPN 87.50% (95% CI, 61.65 to 98.4). The positive LR to the cutoff point of 258 seconds, it was 2.96 (95% CI 1.49 to 5.90) and the negative LR was 0.16 (95% CI 0.04 to 0.60) resulting in a positive post-test of 73% and negative 12%. The second study aimed to investigate whether the time required to perform the Glittre ADL-Test varies according to Weber's rating for the peak VO2, and its correlation with respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function and diaphragmatic mobility. The mean duration of the Glittre ADL-Test was 286.5 seconds there was a significant difference between the classes (254.1 seconds) and C (324 seconds) Weber (p <0.05). The Glittre ADL-Test showed significant correlations with MIP (r=-0.445 - p <0.01), with the MEP (r = -0.531 - p <0.01) and diaphragmatic mobility (r=-0.361 - p <0.05). Twenty-eight patients underwent a second test, the reproducibility of analysis, the ICC found was 0.76 (95% CI 0.17 to 0.91) and p <0.01. Conclusion: The sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV, showed that the Glittre ADLTest is accurate in assessing the functional capacity of patients with HF. It is useful and can be used in clinical practice, he was also able to reflect the functional performance of these individuals and correlated with respiratory muscle strength and diaphragmatic mobility.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study deals with the development of necessary competencies and strategies to develop critical apprehension of contemporary audiovisual productions in school contexts. Data released by IBOPE and TIC KIDS ONLINE surveys confirm that children and adolescents between the ages of 9 and 17 spend a lot of time watching TV and/or surfing the net through different devices, watching videos, programs, movies or online series. Considering and contemplating school context, part of the audiovisual productions which population consumes, can be explored through pedagogically elaborated activities, and may contribute to visual and audiovisual concepts of this public. In this perspective, reading and interpreting these productions, which have expanded throughout the years, seem to be contemporary challenges of visual arts teaching. Not only involving art productions, but any visual and audiovisual production. Thus, the research question that guides this study aims to perceive and analyze how visual arts teachers can provide their students the development of competencies that enable them to apprehend contemporary visual and audiovisual productions in a critical way To this end, the objectives sought to foster reflection on the competencies and strategies development for audiovisual products understanding; to problematize visual and audiovisual apprehension in the teaching of arts through the theoretical and methodological approach discursive semiotics of A. J. Greimas, enlarged by the sociossemiotics studies of E. Landowski. Also, to analyze the sense effects arising from the interrelationship between a cultural production, the episode The Sign, from the animation The Amazing World of Gumball, and a contemporary artistic production, the video installation of Cinema Lascado, by Giselle Beiguelman and to understand the interaction regimes involved. We observe that, in the context of the accident regime, the oscillations between apprehension and suspension in sense effects production are related to the concepts of fractures and the loopholes developed by Greimas. Finally, it is understood that being able to commute between different regimes contributes to make sense apprehension more sophisticated.

Abstract:
With this bachelor thesis I aim to bring to light the role of the computer in digital creative work. This is accomplished by treating the code that make up digital objects as a form of matter, and with Karen Barad’s agential realism and other research into digital materiality as a point of reference this matter is invited to the creative process as an actor. I’ve been striving for a glimpse of how digital matter comes to life when it’s allowed an active part in the creative process, to see how it expresses itself. By engaging with the digital matter through diffraction and remix as methods I’ve been given an insight into the core of it, and through the process I’ve been working alongside digital matter in intra action. Ultimately I can see how digital matter won’t appear alone, I myself and the computer are both entangled together with the digital matter as a result of the intra actions we’ve been engaging in. My intervention in digital matter becomes visible as glitches, traces of decay that give the digital matter, which can be so fleeting, more concrete and material characteristics. The unintelligible complexity of digital matter also comes to light when it’s allowed influence, as it appears visually. With this knowledge I’ve gained the awareness that digital matter does not have an absolute appearance, and this thesis can be seen as an investigation into how digital matter can appear.
