In their famous paper on the "Big Push", Murphy, Shleifer, and Vishny (1989) show how the combination of increasing returns to scale at the firm level and pecuniary externalities can give rise to a poverty trap, thereby formalising an old idea due to Rosenstein-Rodan (1943). We develop in this paper an oligopoly model of the Big Push that is very close in spirit to the Murphy-Shleifer-Vishny (MSV) model, but in contrast to the MSV model it is easily extended to the case of an economy that is open to international trade. Having a workable open-economy framework allows us to address the question

碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>海洋研究所<br>96<br>Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) is a temperate tuna with highly economic value. The exploitation of Pacific bluefin tuna began in 1950s and was mainly utilized by Japan, Korea, Taiwan, United States of America and Mexico in the North Pacific Ocean and the fishing methods are mainly purse seine, longline, troll, pole and line, set net and trawl. In this study, I gathered catch and CPUE data of these fisheries from 1952 to 2006 and used the non-equilibrium production model for stock assessment of T. orientalis. Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation presents evidence based research into climate change policy. The research technique of political economy is used to investigate policy development. A major change in the Anglo-American growth paradigm from unconstrained to constrained growth is identified. The implications of this change for climate change policy are identified. The political economy of climate change policies is expressed in a new Spatial Climate Economic Policy Tool for Regional Equilibria (Sceptre). This is an innovative bechmarking approach to computable general equilibrium (CGE) that provides a

Mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC)has extensive applications in practical areas such as traffic control, engineering design, and economic modeling. Some generalized stationary points of MPEC are studied to better describe the limiting points produced by interior point methods for MPEC.A primal-dual interior point method is then proposed, which solves a sequence of relaxed barrier problems derived from MPEC. Global convergence results are deduced without assuming strict complementarity or linear independence constraint qualification. Under very general assumptions, the alg

The thesis is based on the use of mathematical modeling and analysis to gain insightinto the transmission dynamics of malaria in a community. A new deterministic model for assessing the role of age-structure on the disease dynamics is designed. The model undergoes backward bifurcation, a dynamic phenomenon characterized by the co-existence of a stable disease-free and an endemic equilibrium of the model when the associated reproduction number is less than unity. It is shown that adding age-structure to the basic model for malaria transmission does not alter its essential qualitative dyna

Abstract:
The thesis is based on using dynamical systems theories and techniques to study the qualitative dynamics of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), a sexually-transmitted disease of major public health significance. A deterministic model for the interaction of the virus with the immune system in the body of an infected individual (in vivo) is designed first of all. It is shown, using Lyapunov function and LaSalle's Invariance Principle, that the virus-free equilibrium of the model is globally-asymptotically stable whenever a certain biological threshold, known as the reproduction number, is l

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the qualitative analysis of a general class of SEIRS models in periodic and non-periodic environments. The classical SEIRS model, with standard incidence function, is, first of all, extended to incorporate multiple infectious stages. Using Lyapunov function theory and LaSalle's Invariance Principle, the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) of the resulting SEInRS model is shown to be globally-asymptotically stable whenever the associated reproduction number is less than unity. Furthermore, this model has a unique endemic equilibrium point (EEP), which is shown (using

Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flows and equations have been the focus of a large number of researchers. Here a study of such flows and equations is presented. The first chapter contains a brief introduction to Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) along with some other definitions. A detailed example on the application of HAM is also included to further clarify the scheme of the method. Second chapter deals with a study of symmetry transforms for ideal MHD equations which comes from the work of Bogoyavlenskij [18]. Different properties of such transforms are also discussed which include the infinite-di
