Abstract Too much attention is paid to the absence of women leaders around the world rather than their presence, leaving a gap in our understanding of the difference women leaders make on the lives of fellow women. With women leaders an under-studied group and with the law profoundly important in advancing women’s rights, The Woman President brings together these two domains to become the first-ever comparative study of women’s leadership and the law. It offers the legal and political science scholarship new ways for understanding the impact of female presidential leadership on women’s everyda

The chapter reviews progress across countries on human development over forty years in many dimensions. As shown earlier, there was general progress on basic human development, measured by the Human Development Index. This chapter also shows progress on many other dimensions, including a rising number of countries with broadly democratic political systems, a decline in crime in many countries, and a fall in gender gaps in education and earnings. Despite a recent upsurge of violent conflict, this was mostly on a downward trend at a global level. There was a more mixed situation in some other di

Abstract:
Despite global efforts, women in Pakistan still earn 25% less per hour than men, with disparities widening for older and lower-income workers. This policy brief highlights key barriers, including discrimination, weak compliance with labour laws, and wage inequalities in the informal economy. It also outlines potential solutions, such as gender-neutral job evaluations, minimum wage adjustments, and stronger labour law enforcement. By prioritizing these reforms, Pakistan can foster a fairer, more inclusive labour market and empower women to reach their full economic potential.

The central argument of this book is that over the next decade we are heading towards a global workforce shortage in healthcare that will harm patients, citizens, and societies. Knowing what we know, we cannot simply watch this happen; Mark Britnell believes it is possible to make good this gap by orchestrating our policies and practice in a more innovative, concerted, and collaborative way. In doing so, productivity will improve in a key section of the economy and national wealth will increase, helping individual prosperity, families, communities, and social cohesion. This paper identifies the socioeconomic drivers of earnings inequality in Peru in the period 2004–18. Using the ENAHO household surveys and data on routine task content of occupations, we apply inequality decomposition methods to the real earnings distribution, its quantiles, and the Gini index. We find that in this period inequality has reduced, with great improvement attributed to reductions in the gender wage gap and macroeconomic factors. However, we did not find strong evidence for factors related to changes in workers’ attributes or shifts in job characteristics, except for a slight enha

We investigate the sticky floor and glass ceiling phenomena in the informal labour market as a whole and across its segments. We use the 2010 Cameroon labour market survey, employing the recentred influence function and blending the Oaxaca-Ransom and Neuman-Oaxaca decomposition methods. In particular, Intersectional Solidarity challenges the notion that racial consciousness or gender consciousness alone shape political preferences and instead argues that when it comes to issues that affect marginalized groups at the intersection of multiple identities, intersectional group consciousness shapes political behavior. This book defines intersectional solidarity as a political disposition that is characterized by awareness and distress over the oppression of

What is the hope for Chinese women seeking a social ideal of equality given the growing gender gap in the current economic development of China? In this book, Yuan explores why gendered stratifications perpetuated so deeply in today’s China through the influences of Confucian cultural tradition, but reading early Confucian texts as a cosmological vision of

The engagement between the discipline of international relations (IR) and feminist theory has led to an explosion of concerns about the inherent gendered dimension of a supposedly gender-blind field, and has given rise to a rich and complex array of analyses that attempt to capture the varied aspects of women’s invisibility, marginalization, and objectification within the discipline. The first feminist engagements within IR have pointed not only to the manner in which women are rendered invisible within the field, but also to IR’s inherent masculinity, which masks itself as a neutral and unive
