Abstract:
Globalization that diminishes the barriers to trade worldwide has transformed the structure of production and increased the global competition in the textile and apparel industry. Especially, the elimination of quotas on January 2005 has totally changed the whole scenario of the apparel industry. A boom has been noticed in the emerging markets. Buyers shift their maximum orders to the low cost countries to increase their profit margins. China has gained its popularity among the European and American buyers because of the cheap labor and large scales of production and has become the world’s largest exporter of textile and apparel. The traditional competitive factor among the buyers is the lower cost of the product but the changing markets trends and demand volatility pushes the buyers to focus also on quality and lead times in addition to price. Due to the huge competition among the cluster of brands, retailers and wholesalers, lead time is becoming critical as longer lead times increases the risk of bottleneck to sales. China is the most important apparel supplier for the EU (especially Germany, the UK, and France) because it provides the cost benefit to the sourcing companies, but at the same time, it increases the lead times and also has more environmental impact in terms of pollution because of the long geographical distance. This thesis highlights that there is a remarkable rise of the labor cost in China, noticed for the last couple of years, which has reduced the competitive factor of price while sourcing from China. This is also an upcoming challenge for the whole world with regards to sourcing strategies. Many sourcing companies are shifting their shares away from China in order to achieve their desired profit margins. Turkey may be an alternative sourcing destination for the European apparel buyers and wholesalers because of its competitive labor cost, favorable government policies, flexibility, sustainability, and proximity to Europe. In this thesis, a pilot study is carried out to determine the relationship and effects of lead times on sales. This thesis also describes the effects of relationships among the business partners on the supply chain flow. It is noted through several pilot studies that the organizations who work in collaboration with their supply chain partners can significantly improve their supply chain efficiency by reducing the inventories, markdowns, lead times, lost sales, and increasing forecast accuracy. There are several tools in use for collaboration such as Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), Just in Time (JIT), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Collaboration, Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment (CPFR). In this paper the CPFR implementation steps, benefits, and hindrances are discussed in detail.

Abstract : The growing warehouse operation complexity has led companies to adopt a large number of indicators, making its management increasingly difficult. It may be hard for managers to evaluate the overall performance of the logistic systems, including the warehouse, because the assessment of the interdependence of indicators with distinct objectives is rather complex (e.g. the level of a cost indicator shall decrease, whereas a quality indicator level shall be maximized). This fact could lead to biases in the analysis executed by the manager in the evaluation of the global warehouse performance. In this context, this thesis develops a methodology to achieve an integrated warehouse performance measurement. It encompasses four main steps: (i) the development of an analytical model of performance indicators usually used for warehouse management; (ii) the definition of indicator relationships analytically and statistically; (iii) the aggregation of these indicators in an integrated model; (iv) the proposition of a scale to assess the evolution of the warehouse performance over time according to the integrated model results. The methodology is applied to a theoretical warehouse to demonstrate its application. The indicators used to evaluate the warehouse come from the literature and the database is generated to perform the mathematical tools. The Jacobian matrix is used to define indicator relationships analytically, and the principal component analysis to achieve indicator's aggregation statistically. The final aggregated model comprehends 33 indicators assigned in six different components, which compose the global performance indicator equation by means of component's weighted average. A scale is developed for the global performance indicator using an optimization approach to obtain its upper and lower boundaries. The usability of the integrated model is tested for two different warehouse performance situations and interesting insights about the final warehouse performance are discussed. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed methodology reaches its objective providing a decision support tool for managers so that they can be more efficient in the global warehouse performance management without neglecting important information from indicators.

Few companies globally source and manage commercial transportation for frequent and high volumes of explosive cargo for the U. S. Department of Defense. U.S. regulations are strict and economically competitive options are limited. The challenge is even more problematic when the company has not developed an internal capability to efficiently manage logistics transportation. Companies view logistics and supply chain management as crucial to their overall success, though most do not claim it as a core competency. Instead, companies often outsource logistics operations and management to 3rd Party Logistics and other transportation solution providers. This paper explores how a company dealing with frequent shipments of explosive, Department of Defense cargo need not fully outsource logistics operations and management. Rather this paper shows how a company can quickly and cost-effectively improve their internal logistics capability while utilizing the benefits of logistics outsourcing. It is imperative that a company evolving its logistics capability maintain flexibility yet realize the advances in the transportation outsourcing industry. This research is distinctive in that it provides a case study of an organization that utilizes global partners supplying the U.S. Government in substantial volumes and must operate within the confines of hazardous goods regulations and archaic United States Department of Defense shipping regulations.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the strategic roles of integrated logistics and supply chain management and global sourcing strategy for firms' performance, and to examine the direct and indirect relationships between integrated logistics and supply chain management, logistics performance, global sourcing performance, and further sustainable competitive advantage. This thesis adopts resource based theory to explore the relationships between a firm's specific capability and its performance and employs structural equation modelling in order to rigorously test the validation of the measurement models and examine the relationships between the construct variables. The data used were collected by postal questionnaire survey from logistics managers of 195 firms from the automobile and electronics industries based in Korea. The empirical research shows that (1) there exists a significant positive relationship between information & planning formality and strategic planning (2) strategic planning has a significant positive influence upon integrated logistics and SCM capability (3) internal integration & customer relationship has a significant effect on logistics performance (4) supplier integration and logistics integration & customer service exert significant impacts upon global sourcing performance (5) supplier integration has a significant effect on the firm's competitive market position (6) a superior logistics capability exerts a significant impact upon global sourcing performance and sustainable competitive advantage (7) global sourcing capability has a significant influence on sustainable competitive advantage and competitive position in the market and (8) competitive position in the market is significantly predicted by sustainable competitive advantage. In addition, this research presents many significant indirect effects between the constructs. Overall, this thesis suggests that a firm should develop an integrated logistics and SCM capability in balance and make efforts to build superior logistics and/or global sourcing capabilities in order to effectively obtain and/or reinforce its competitive market position and long-term survival and success.

There are various reasons why companies manufacture their goods in different areas of the world. These reasons include: lower labor costs, emerging markets, tax and tariff considerations, and intellectual property issues. With the constant pressure to decrease costs, outsourcing is becoming more popular, especially to areas having very low labor costs, such as Asia. As a result of the longer distances needed to ship product, logistics is becoming a much larger part of the cost of goods. The global nature of some businesses also requires long supply chains. This globalization requires firms to manufacture their goods and provide their services throughout the world. The logistics systems can affect the supply chain and operations in many ways. In order to have the lowest overall cost, companies must consider tradeoffs among various cost drivers. Inventory policies and operations might have to be altered to accommodate increased logistical needs. Today, the many details involved in the logistics network have created new sets of problems that have not been as important to firms in the past. This thesis looks at examples of cross docking and leveling as means to reduce the overall supply chain costs in a global logistics network and applying them at Eastman Kodak Company. This thesis is the result of work done during a 6.5 month LFM internship at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. In order to protect company confidentiality, the data has been altered or disguised.

This thesis explores the use of a service based logistics optimization (SBLO) methodology for an inbound reverse logistics network. Currently, Quest Diagnostics solves the vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) in designing routes. The objective of the canonical VRPTW is to find a minimum cost route that visits every node once while meeting time window and capacity constraints without consideration to service levels. Since many of the nodes in Quest's logistics network receive multiple pickups per day, have time-sensitive biological specimens, and require different service levels, the SBLO is more aligned with service objectives. First, a spatio-temporal network model is created for every client in the logistics network. Next, a key service level metric (logistics turn-around-time) is defined. Finally, the SBLO is developed and tested on a small geographic area in Brighton, MA. The results of the two week pilot were promising; service levels improved 25%, labor costs per requisition decreased by 10%-15%, and additional capacity was created the 2nd and 3rd shifts. Although the effectiveness of the SBLO will be different for each route, the gains in service, reductions in cost, and increases in efficiency of the pilot warrant an investigation of the new optimization methodology applied to the entire logistics network. Quest could theoretically start processing 28% of the total New England testing volume by the 1st or 2nd shift, lowering operational costs, increasing efficiencies, and improving service levels dramatically. Additionally, this service based optimization strategy provides a value proposition that is more aligned with customer value expectations.

The recent surge of direct-to-customer (DTC) orders in the retail industry has increasingly put pressure on omni-channel retailers' supply chain networks to offer faster and cheaper delivery while maintaining their supply chain cost position and committed service level agreements. As warehousing and logistics operations are not part of the core business for most omni-channel retailers, both operations are often outsourced to third-party logistics (3PL) companies. This makes it challenging for omni-retailers to actually improve these operations to handle the surging DTC orders through the relationships with their 3PL partners. This thesis presents cost analysis frameworks for improving the effectiveness of warehousing and logistics cost structures in outsourced omni-channel retail distribution networks. The thesis also conveys short-term and long-term strategy recommendations for reducing supply chain costs of these networks through a case study based on Verizon's retail supply chain network. First, a short-term strategy is proposed through leveraging the key cost drivers identified in a should-cost model developed to simulate receiving, pick-pack, and verification operations in distribution centers (DCs) based on a set of parameter inputs, such as volume, labor rate, labor standard time, facility location, staffing strategy, etc. This zero-based should-cost modeling technique can help the hiring company enhance their bargaining power in contract negotiation with 3PL companies in order to realize cost savings and collaborate on implementing new technologies. Second, a long-term strategy is formed to provide frameworks for omni-channel retailers to reconsider the pros and cons of outsourcing and to think of building sustainable and collaborative relationships with 3PL companies for the coming challenges in the omni-channel retail industry. The recommended execution plan is to stay with a centralized DC model and transition to partnering with capable 3PL service providers to pool ground shipments in order to achieve zone-skipping before the last mile delivery for the future.

Ford, Richard. "Value proposition in international freight : the contribution of the freight forwarder to the global logistics triad." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/4439.

Full text
Abstract:
The freight forwarder has been threatened with 'disintermediation' for years. This research looks at the relationships in the global logistics triad comprising the forwarder, the shipper, and the airline or ocean carrier. The middle-man in service industries such as freight forwarding performs the service of intermediation. He is defined as one who reduces or eliminates the need for a buyer to form exchange relationships, ad hoc or relational, with a number of suppliers by concentrating the buyer's need for information at the buyer interface and expanding the buyer's requirement for choice or selection at the supplier interface. This vendor contraction and expansion are explored in the qualitative first phase of the research which examines the relationships, shared functions, and roles of the members of the global logistics triad as well as the contribution of the freight forwarder. Modal differences are prominent. Shippers are closer in a relational sense to ocean carriers than to airlines - the exporter is much more likely to use a shipping line directly than to use an airline. This modal difference owes much to the airfreight industry's origins in passenger transportation. It is reflected in the airlines' perspective of the forwarder: as customer because of forwarders' purchase of space, as competitor because the airline is being excluded from dealing directly with the shipper, and as collaborator because of the common threat of the integrator. To the ocean carrier, the forwarder is customer and competitor only - collaboration is rare. Factors that affect the custome r/competitor/colla boratort richotomy in airfreight include freight capacity, the level of forwarder commitment to space, the status freight has with the airline, and the makeup of the airline's customer portfolio. The factors that affect the customer/ competitor dichotomy in ocean freight include the extent of LCL (Less than Container Load) cargo and 3PL (3rd Party Logistics) services offered by the shipping line. The modal differences and complexities inherent in the global airfreight triad were explored in the subsequent quantitative phase. What value does the airfreight forwarder offer to the shipper that would compel him to not disintermediate this intermediary and deal directly with the airline? It is surmised the forwarder offers value through cost reduction, specifically the costs of transacting with a number of airlines. This second phase is based on Transaction Cost Analysis using an experiment-derived survey instrument. The transaction costs of searching for vendors, developing relationships with them, monitoring their performance, handling problems that may arise, and managing potential opportunistic behaviour were examined. The shi pper- respondents - made up of British global exporters who used airfreight - were asked to compare their perception of these costs for the forwarder and for the airline. They were also asked about production cost/price advantages as well as demographic information that was presumed to affect these perceptions. The differences between these perceptions of transaction costs were highly significant with the perception of offering lower transaction costs, and hence greater value, lying with the forwarder. The shippers also positively viewed forwarders regarding the production cost/price advantages. However, the demographic variables played little part in the shippers' differential perceptions of transaction costs. Contribution is made to Transaction Cost Theory by suggesting the inclusion of triadic relationships and the intermediary as a governance alternative. In addition, the freight forwarding industry and global distribution benefit. Finally, at the level of method, the TC comparison technique used offers a fresh approach to comparing primary and intermediary vendors.

As consumer preferences shift towards online shopping and utilizing their homes as fitting rooms, traditional brick and mortar retailers are faced with the challenge to adapt. Many retailers are experiencing a growing number of returned merchandize, many of which cannot be easily resold to consumers due to various supply chain challenges. This thesis explores the opportunities to improve the consumer returns process and presents methods for modeling the supply chain process for reverse logistics in the retail industry derived from case studies. The model then allows for hypothesis testing. By changing parameters in the model, this thesis further explores the scenarios in which the supply chain process may be improved to increase margin and decrease cost. The primary recommendations include specific modifications to the current reverse supply chain flow, enabling new channels that improve speed and margin, as well as developing the decision tool further for better accuracy and integration into the supply chain.

The Boeing Company is the world's largest aerospace company and is constantly evaluating improvement opportunities to the production system. It is of ongoing interest to the company to have to tools to assess new manufacturing sites. Among the required tasks for such an effort, engineers must identify the processes and capabilities that will be needed. A critical element of this study is the system of internal logistics processes that could manage the flow of parts and material throughout a site. Planning the capacity of these processes is difficult when many of the parameters are uncertain and yet to be determined. This thesis proposes a method for estimating capacity requirements of internal logistics processes by employing the concepts of queuing theory and Little's Law. Using this methodology, a process model was developed and validated by discrete event simulation to provide process planners with an understanding of the relationship and importance of numerous parameters. This understanding allows planners and management to assess the capacity requirements of the processes in terms of projected costs and performance. Values of wait times predicted by the proposed model were in strong agreement with values observed from simulation (R-squared of 96.4%; MAPE of 14.9%) suggesting that the proposed methodology represents an easy-to-use and accurate representation of process parameters. In order to improve the applicability of capacity recommendations for Boeing, further refinement is needed of underlying process parameters as well as cost modeling of threshold parameters (k and pn_max).

Key objectives of this thesis work include creating business tools and processes to record global logistics emissions data, which will allow GM to more accurately report logistics emissions and reduction efforts to shareholders, track network emissions over time, pinpoint carbon reduction opportunities that align with cost savings efforts, and understand and mitigate future risks to the business. The approach taken to address the above objectives unfolds into three distinct work streams: (1) implementation of industry-recognized methods and processes, (2) development of a global carbon footprint measurement model, and (3) emissions analysis of network change activities. Industry research and data analysis along with internal cost and network data were used to develop carbon measurement tools. These tools are capable of estimating mass emissions (tons C02) generated by logistics operations globally as well as the increase or decrease in mass emissions generated by individual network change events (e.g., changes in mode, mileage, shipment frequency, etc.). Furthermore, through close collaboration with logistics providers, GM fulfilled the necessary requirements to become an official shipper partner of the USEPA SmartWay program. Immediate benefits of the project work include using the resulting data for global reporting and benchmarking purposes, providing management with a new set of information that can be used to strengthen network change proposals, and tracking improvements in overall network emissions as well as the performance of individual providers. Long term benefits include stronger relationships with providers, reputational and governmental risk mitigation, and cost savings from increased fuel efficiency of operations.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an intervention designed to eliminate damage notification failures in a customer-specific standard operating procedure used by a global logistics company. Process maps identified locations in the process where damage notification failures could most likely occur. A revised process was designed overnight to eliminate as many notification failure points as possible. In addition, a job aid was included to help facilitate the process change for the drivers. The results of the intervention showed a rapid and profound decrease in damage notification failures leading to the retention of a large, profitable account with a minimal initial investment of time and money.

Verizon may rely on third-party logistics providers (3PLs) to manage some aspects of the reverse supply chain of Fios equipment. As a result, it depends on the 3PL to continually strive for increased quality, reliability, capacity, and speed. Above all, in order to have a successful partnership, the process must be economical for the 3PL. As several sources of variation are detrimental to the 3PL's margins and cause operational problems, Verizon is investing in the supplier relationship to ensure that the 3PL is profitable and positioned for the future. Making sure there is a "win-win" relationship is beneficial for both parties and helps to ensure that the investments that have been made will continue to result in success, including operational improvements. To do this, a culture of continuous improvement and data-driven decisions needs to be cultivated and developed at the 3PL. The goal of this project is two-fold. First, there is a need to understand the variation that exists in the 3PL's process as well as the associated costs, which include overtime, ineffective labor and production planning, and high turnover. The secondary goal of the project is to empower the 3PL to make data-driven decisions in the future and start to shift their culture to one that aligns better with Verizon's. By showing the benefits of collaboration between the two companies, this project will help build trust. In this thesis, we discuss how process mining is used to understand the 3PL's current state and guide data-driven continuous improvement. We introduce several opportunities for handling variation, including creating visibility into return volumes, reducing defects caused by incorrect packaging, and creating feedback mechanisms for operators. This is done in close collaboration with the 3PL to ensure they will ultimately have ownership of implementation.

The fulfillment supply chain consists of all activities associated with packing, storing, and transporting a product from the manufacturer to the customer. In the global environment, it is a challenge to accurately measure the impact of a given strategy on logistics costs quickly and efficiently. While much focus has been given to supply chain strategy as a whole, less has been applied to specific implications of packaging fulfillment decisions. The goal of this research is to analyze the cost impact on the global fulfillment supply chain for given packaging strategies. Through the development of a comprehensive logistics model, I attempt to identify cost drivers and sensitivities in the networks and recommend strategies to mitigate adverse impacts. Specifically, this research pertains to the fulfillment of notebook computers and associated accessories at Dell, Inc.; however, the insights can be generalized to any consumer product firm with a variety of products, serving customers in multiple regions of the world. The model development and implementation results indicate that the lowest cost strategy for Dell's current fulfillment supply chain consists of minimizing the system box contents at the factory and fulfilling additional accessories separately in the customer region. Inbound costs are the most significant factor in the total fulfillment logistics cost. Every effort should be made to reduce this cost by minimizing the weight of the system box shipped from the manufacturer. Additionally, it is evident that regional logistics costs in the three major customer markets for Dell: Americas, Europe-Middle East- Africa, and Asia-Pacific-Japan, are not uniformly affected by differences in packaging strategies. These differences are the result of specific cost bases and product demand profiles associated with the regions. Therefore, I recommend evaluating future fulfillment strategies with this model to understand the specific cost impact on individual regions on an ongoing basis.

Abstract:
The growing warehouse operation complexity has led companies to adopt a large number of indicators, making its management increasingly difficult. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed methodology reaches its objective providing a decision support tool for managers so that they can be more efficient in the global warehouse performance management without neglecting important information from indicators

The explosion of the mobile phone industry in 1990s and 2000s has introduced more than a billion mobile phones to consumers in the emerging markets of the world. The mobile phone manufacturing industry's increased competition and growth have led to significant innovation in product development and supply chain planning. With respect to serving the needs of consumers in emerging markets, because of the consumers' relatively high price-sensitivity, there is significant pressure for supply chains to develop cost-efficient distribution channels. The replacement of air freight by ocean freight on Nokia Corporation's outbound logistics presents a potential opportunity for substantial supply chain cost reduction. This thesis investigates the impact across the supply chain when Nokia's outbound shipments of finished goods switch from air freight to ocean freight. An analytical model is developed in this thesis to quantify the net margin impact of switching from air freight to ocean freight. The model considers the tradeoff between transportation cost saving and inventory carrying cost increase commonly studied by previous research literature. The model examines these cost categories in detail and includes a third cost category of financial cost related to the transfer of goods. Additionally, the model adjusts its outcomes based on foreign exchange fluctuations, a risk that is prevalent for many industries engaged in international commerce. Applying the model across different shipment lanes globally, it is evident that switching from air freight to ocean freight for outbound logistics in many cases has a negative impact on combined net profit of Nokia and Nokia's distributor customers under typical supply chain conditions. In some of the trans-ocean shipment lanes analyzed, Nokia sees a positive impact on net margin, Nokia's distributor sees a negative impact on net margin, and the impact on the combined net margin is negative. In other cases where the transportation savings are greater, the combined net margin impact is positive, but those shipment lanes do not necessarily share a common set of characteristics. A sensitivity analysis of the various supply chain parameters indicates that the volume of the shipments, the financial position of the distributor, the risk posed by currency fluctuations, and the variability in seaport customs lead time are amongst the most significant influences on the net profit margin calculations. The analytical model demonstrates the relative impact of ocean freight under different supply chain conditions, although the accuracy of the global model's cost estimates could be further improved with modifications specific to each local market.

Abstract:
In an environment of increasingly unstable and uncertain, companies in general, have other choices only to search the global and durable performance which only could constitute a factor of sustainability and a major competing advantage. The global performance of companies’ acts on all the dimensions of the cycle of life of the product / service: from design to delivery to the consumer, reducing costs to be able to offer the best price to the customer. This optimization’s logistics endwise of the chain has become a vital necessity for the sustainability of the company.Today, businesses in general and logistics providers in particular, are confronted with the realization that modeling their supply chain needs to be reviewed more efficient and especially that the impacts of their activity must be taken into account : integrating environmental constraints in the management of their supply activities, distribution, transportation, ... and supply, distribution, of transport,… and to release some ways for economic, social and environmental progress, that must be the strategic challenge of the next decade.Hence, the need to adopt a specific management aiming to reconcile classical practices leading to the global performance, and innovative and specific practices that promote on sustainable development. Our research will treat the following problematic: how to realize the global performance of SMEs in the Transportation and Logistics sector in Morocco, by adopting the practices of sustainable development? Thus, we will treat in this work, a model of specific Management able to lead the Moroccan logistics providers to the global performance, while reconciling the various financial, social and environmental challenges For this purpose, we ask a key question: how the sustainable development is presented as an opportunity to achieve sustainable performance?

Abstract:
Global logistics companies are increasingly disclosing carbon related information due to institutional and stakeholder pressures. Existing research, however, is limited to categorizing these pressures and their influences on corporate carbon disclosure strategies. In particular, literature to date has not distinguished between different carbon disclosure strategies and how they may have changed over time. In response, this paper: (1) proposes a framework that depicts four different carbon disclosure responses and strategies based on internal and external pressures; and (2) subsequently analyzes and compares corporate carbon disclosure strategies between 2010 and 2015. Using a sample of 39 leading global logistics companies, carbon disclosure strategies are categorized based on the analysis of 25 applied carbon management practices from Bloomberg ESG to see if carbon management practices and the associated strategies have changed. The findings show overall shifts to more transparent corporate carbon disclosure strategies between 2010 and 2015 with an increase of applied carbon management practices in both internal and external actions.

Abstract:
Inefficient supply chains result in unsold inventory and unfilled customer orders, posing a significant risk to company profitability and consumer satisfaction. The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies supply chain managers in the manufacturing industry used to match the level of unsold inventory in the supply chain with customer demand consistently. Porter's value chain provided the conceptual framework for the study. A sample of 5 experienced supply chain managers from a global manufacturing company headquartered in the midwestern United States participated in semistructured interviews. Each participant provided company supply chain documentation for triangulation. Data analysis followed Yin's 5 stages of data analysis and yielded 4 themes: define policies and processes, develop collaborative partnerships, leverage technology, and consider the end-to-end supply chain. The themes are the foundation of successful supply chain management strategies that have improved matching of unsold inventory in the supply chain to customer demand. Study findings benefit both supply chain leaders and consumers by providing the potential to improve consistency in meeting customer demand with less inventory in the supply chain, resulting in customer satisfaction, business growth, and stable employment. The findings may contribute to positive social change by helping supply chain leaders create thriving businesses with satisfied employees and customers who are willing to spend their time and money contributing to community growth, economic stability, and enhanced social conditions.

Abstract:
The increasing competitiveness in today\'s global marketplace has compelled companies to continuously improve their internal operations while offering high quality products at lower costs. Lean production has been adopted by companies as a way to boost improvement efforts. The lean philosophy aims at eliminating waste and reducing inventory, which in turn may bring about various benefits such as reduced lead time, lower production costs, better workflow and increased quality of products. Global sourcing has also emerged as another philosophy to help companies increase competitiveness. Other philosophies and practices are believed to bring companies the same benefits, but they have not been addressed in this research. Some of the benefits that may result from global sourcing are lower purchasing costs, access to higher quality products and entrance to new markets by offering new products to the domestic market. However, the long lead time required to delivery products, which may result from a variety of reasons, will cause inventory to increase, thus reducing the benefits of lean production. Hence, the objective of this work is to identify and analyze the factors that cause conflict between global sourcing and lean production. The literature points out some factors, such as language, culture, fluctuation of the exchange rate, customs paperwork, legal issues, transport infrastructure, disruptions in the supply chain, time zone, after-sales service, the need to consolidate transport volumes and the buyer-supplier relationship. The impact of these factors over global sourcing, as well as the lean production initiatives, was analyzed during a case study conducted in a firm from the health sector. Most of the aforementioned factors could be detected during the case study, whereas customs paperwork, legal issues, disruptions in the supply chain and fluctuations in the exchange rate were the ones that most affected the company. The results of this work contribute to the body of knowledge by providing evidence for the development of new approaches that seek to mitigate such factors while maintaining the benefits of both lean production and global sourcing.

Abstract:
Ericsson has recently experienced difficulties to meet the customer demand, which has led to lost market shares. This is mainly due to the long and unpredictable lead times within their supply chains. Therefore, Ericsson seeks to increase their ability to meet the customer demand by reducing the customer order lead time. A shorter lead time would imply a greater responsiveness and improved service level towards the customers. A directive from the company was to base the study on the supply chain for the customer Algeria Telecom Mobile. The purpose of the study is to give recommendations for improvements that reduce the total lead time in a supply chain perspective in order to improve the customer service level.  To be able to fulfill the purpose, four objectives were distinguished and supported with existing frameworks for analyzing supply chains. The first step was to create a current state map, which was achieved by conducting 24 interviews with people working within the supply chain. The second step was to identify potentials for lead time reduction. This was done by categorizing the supply chain parts and the problems that were gathered during the current state mapping into meaningful groups, and thereafter prioritize the categories with the greatest potential. The third step was to generate alternative solutions by conducting a second literature review based on the potentials that was identified during the prior step. The general solutions were later modified in order to fit the current supply chain. It resulted in eight Ericsson specific solutions. The fourth step was to evaluate these solutions in combination, which led to a recommended combination of solutions that provided the greatest lead time reduction. Also the requirements for implementing these solutions were presented in this step.  The recommendation for Ericsson is to rearrange their current supply chain for the studied customer and use two different supply chains; the Regional supply chain and the Alternative supply chain. The two arrangements will both be based on the implementation of a supply hub, which implies a movement of the customer order decoupling point closer to the customer. The Regional supply chain will cover the main flow and be used when the customer orders products from a product portfolio that has been agreed within the region. The Alternative supply chain will act as a complement and cover the flow of products outside the regional product portfolio.   The estimated customer order lead time for the Regional supply chain is 17 days, which is a reduction of 80 % in the normal case for the studied supply chain. The lead time for the Alternative supply chain is more difficult to estimate precisely, but it will be reduced in comparison with the current situation. Moreover, the service level towards the customer will be increased for both the Regional and the Alternative supply chain. To summarize the recommendations that are forwarded to Ericsson, they are listed below:
  • Implement a regional supply hub
  • Agree on a regional product portfolio
  • Implement time slots for inbound flows
  • Use BPO as a payment method instead of Letter of Credit
  • Use a CIP, DAP or DAT Incoterm
  • Implement a product configurator and let the customer place orders on commercial descriptions or a solution id.
  • Integrate processes and activities throughout the supply chain and establish a greater information exchange.

After encountering several critical and crucial affairs including Quota elimination, China’s accession to WTO, emerging markets rising, as well as the financial crisis in 2008, Taiwan textile and apparel industries stand still due to superior global deployment and self-upgrading. The fast changes of the consumer market pushes customers to put more and more pressure on suppliers, such as lower average selling price, higher product and service quality, frequently changing product specification or order conditions, and so on. To review and adjust the infrastructure of the enterprise internal operation process becomes essential not only for meeting customer’s requirements, but also for providing extra value-added services, not to mention to achieve the internal balance. The past studies for Taiwan textile and apparel industries are related to production, manufacturing, collaborative design, value chain analysis or strategy setting. The study of enterprise global logistics is lacked of systematic analysis, nor sufficient tool. Therefore, my study is to construct an enterprise global logistics model based on SCOR, and testify by a real case in the industry. The study purpose is to propose a practical global logistics model which combined theory and real operation.

Nowadays, satisfactions of customers have become important competitiveness of enterprises. The idea of passive reverse logistic in enterprises has been transformed. In order to promote the image of enterprise and increase the service level to customers, enterprises take the initiative in reverse logistic. Under this management pattern, enterprises must take the responsibility of guarantee and service, which is a big challenge for large-scale enterprises. Maintaining higher satisfactions of customers, the higher cost is consequential. For global enterprises, product recycling is not easy than local enterprises. It is impossible to gather the repairing goods to Taiwan and then return them to customers around the world. Enterprises will lose customer loyalties and goodwill at the same time. That will be a great lost. Therefore, increasing after-sales service quality and establishing repair center will be an important subject for global enterprises. By using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP) of Multi-criteria decision making, we describe the way of information technology industry choosing the reverse logistics RMA center position. We combine many literatures with relevant experts’ interview, build the hierarchy structure of global logistics RLT center choosing position decision. We get the weight of four main factors, fourteen criteria, and each position of three continents in sequentice. The most important factor is logistics, the next are cost and market factors; the most important criteria is transportation cost, the next are operation cost, customer power, custom, labor quality, and Hub distance; the best location in America is L.A., the next is Mexico; the best location in Asia is China, the next is Taiwan; the best location in Europe is Holland, the next are Poland and Germany. This research considers the location determination decision of global logistics management for reverse logistics traceability, and estimates the IT industry relevant manager decision making for RLT center. We find that the most important factor is logistics, but most of enterprises regard cost as the first importance. Therefore, they look for the lowest cost position, but not the best location. A proper strategy of positioning RLT (Reverse Logistic Traceability) center will provide enterprises a faster, elastic and low-cost operation flow. Further, better product quality and effective operation are expectable. The location of RLT center has become an important subject for enterprises. Decreasing the operating cost of enterprise and increasing the service level, depending on how to expand the territory of business and optimize the geography of enterprise.

Business today, just as in the past, is always changing. However, the way for a firm to operate business is more challenging following after the trend of vertical integration and top to down coordination. Due to intensive global competition, all the clients, manufacturers, and suppliers are closely interdependent on each other through sharing information and resources which prevent single company from bearing all the supply chain risk. For the firm which is engaged in globalization, the key factor to create competitive advantage is to provide customer with value added service rather than product. Therefore, the concept of competition is considered to be supply chain in stead of individual. The research employed a multiple methodology—case study and in depth interviews, aim to exploit the insight for the research. Accompanied with the framework developed from the literature, the research formulates a global logistic management framework with the connection of three modules: consolidation delivery, forecasting and replenishment, procurement for sanitary ware industry. According to the research, global logistic management infrastructure can help the firm achieve the following objectives: shorten delivery lead time, cost saving due to bundle shipment, procurement efficiency and create more revenues. Once the modules to be progressed smoothly in initial stage, it can be a good example for subsidiaries to expand channel brands with value added service.

The establishment layout of global planning management and the development of information technology have affected enterprises in Taiwan. Under the impact of increasingly intense global enterprise competition, global planning management has gradually become an important issue that enterprises enter internationalization. In order to meet the current trend of global planning management, Taiwan also actively begins to arrange production and sales distributors all over the world. Since China is relatively closer to Taiwan on geographic location, most production manufacturers of Taiwan’s industry have migrated to China and most components required in final product manufacturing are purchased locally. However, because the quality of the components locally supplied in China is uneven and it is not easy to control the delivery date, the production scheduling and the product yield are unstable, thereby affecting profits. In view of this, in this study, it is expected by the manner of the cross-strait division process between Taiwan and China that the components are produced or provided in Taiwan and then delivered to factories in China, assembled as final products, so as to address the current bottlenecks suffered in production. Analysis and programs of the global planning management mode have been proposed in this study. First, this study explores the operational mode supporting production, information transfer and collaboration of overseas final products in the transnational division process of domestic manufacturing industries. By such, it is understood how domestic manufacturers proceed logistics under the arrangement of the overseas division process. Besides, according to bottlenecks and demands suffered in the current planning management mode, through service modes provided by 4PL, the achievable logistics mode is planned and the effectiveness analysis is assessed, expected to be the basis of the overseas follow-up production of final products. Furthermore, a complete global logistics information platform is built to enhance the planning management efficiency of domestic manufacturers and thus to improve competitiveness in the international market.

Global logistics management is more important for enterprises. The enterprises create own competitive advantages as long as they integrate the mode of supply chain between supplier and customer. Due to the difference of the industry type, the standard ERP system is not easy to satisfy the actual requirements for the electronic industry. Moreover, based on the thinking of global logistics management, it is more important for electronic industry to develop the mechanism of collaborative commerce and information sharing in the supply chain. According to the requirements of electronic industry and the thinking of efficient information sharing, this study builds up an E-global logistics management system that integrates the functions of current ERP system and the operation model of production and distribution in the supply chain. The result of this research is to design and implement an information system for global logistics management and collaborative commerce. This system can satisfy the needs of quick response for supplier, manufacturer, distributor, and customer. After implementing this information system, it not only makes the information of supply and demand more transparent, but also lowers the cycle time and the cost of inventory.

Due to globalization of economical environment, multinational corporations continually build assembly lines and delivery systems worldwide. It forces enterprises of Taiwan to develop Global Logistics Management (GLM). In addition, enterprises of Taiwan have powerful manufacturing and designing ability as well as relative supportive plans of government such as ABCDE plans which was led by Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan, R.O.C,. These make a firmly competitive advantage for domestic enterprises to develop Global Logistics Management. Making a comprehensive survey of past studies about Global Logistics Management, most of them are case studies which probed into general situation of specific industry. However, the information of those results is limited to let executives of enterprises plan Global Logistics Management. Therefore, this study makes use of Conjoint Analysis to design Global Logistics Management and then analyze strategies preferences of different industries while executives are planning GLM system. Hoping provide executives a complete set of information and references to plan Global Logistics Management. After executives’ personal interview, self-explicated preference scores of respondents are adopted to run Cluster Analysis and then preference evaluations of full-profile are analyzed through Conjoint Analysis. The results find that there are three Global Logistics Management types. Besides, The Global Logistics Management of industry-specific and GLM of Free Port are also derived form the results of conjoint analysis and enterprise interviews.

In recent years, many countries begin to develop global logistics management, and the ROC government also start pushing correlative plans of the global logistics management, such as “The Plan for Developing Taiwan as an Asia-Pacific Regional Operations Center” in 1995, “Global Logistics Management Plan” in 2000, “Challenge 2008 National Development Plan - Operations headquarters” in 2002, and the hot issues “Free Trade Agreement” and “Free Trade Area”. But the results of pushing the foregoing plans in recent years are limited and its main reason is not classified and defined the stages and modes of global logistics management. This study cited the concept of the Third Wave (agriculture wave, industry wave, information wave) of Alvin Toffer, and the ideas of three stages and six modes of the global logistics management system (Huang, 2003) to discuss the competitive relations of the global logistics management system. Owing to the difference of the competitive condition and the function between the stages and models in the global logistics management system, the evaluative index should be different. This study widely collected the references of domestic and international, and according to the concepts of the global logistics management system, we proposed the initial indexes through the opinion of the specialists and the scholars from the four levels, such as the cost, time, quality and elasticity. Besides in order to make the indexes with the five characters of the completeness, operational, decomposable, nonredundant and minimal size, we used the Simple Analysis of Related System (SARS) to select the indexes. Finally this study analyzed the competitive indexes of each stages and modes to provide to the reference for government to the development of the global logistics management plan.

This paper intends to present prudent solutions of risk management for global logistics operations for the electronics industry from a Taiwan based company perspective. The competitive strengths and sustainable development of global logistics operations have become a core value and competence for the Taiwan electronics industry. The whole logistics operations are vulnerable. One event or incident can hinder business continuity and even wipe a company out of the market. Risks are more unpredictable and uncontrollable in the global logistics operations than in other operations as most of the process is under a third party’s care, control and custody. In light of the nature of this risk, companies should focus more on it and endeavor to implement solutions to deal with it. There are many papers and articles dealing with risk management or with global logistics operations, but very few of them link the two. This paper will contribute to the Taiwan electronics industry with ideas to support continued growth and competitiveness. And we hope that academic groups or organizations will find this paper of interest in their research.

With the development of technology, the change of consumer demand style, and the economical globalization trend tide of the economic globalization trend, the enterprises should transfer their strategy to get with such a huge uncertainty environment. The way they can choose is expending their operating region in other countries to seek more sources and consumers. Because of it, the supply chain of industry is spreading overseas to obtain advantage for operation and enhance competitive ability. Therefore, the issue of global logistics management is crucial in modern society. Taking a broad view of former research, most papers investigate the global logistics management of the enterprise situation through case studies. The research of mathematical model establishment for global logistics system is necessary. The globalization problem should take many factors into account more than the operating problem in single country. The objective of this paper is to present a model in global perspective with limited resources. In addition, the impact of exchange rate and tariff is one of the topics of this research.
