Abstract:
In this study I investigate the impact that operating in specific foreign countries has on the bank loan contracts of multinational companies. While previous research has shown that increased firm globalization leads to a lower cost of bank debt, I find that this relationship is attenuated when firms operate in countries with certain institutional attributes. Using income levels, creditor rights, and property rights as institutional indices, I test the association of country-level factors with the priced and non-priced components of bank loan contracts. I find that globalized firms operating in low income countries, countries with weak creditor rights, or countries with weak property rights do not receive the same positive debt contracting features as do firms operating in high income countries, countries with strong creditor rights, or countries with strong property rights.<br>Ph. Abstract:
Nowadays, in times of maintaining economic contacts with the world market there is an increasing need to understand each other through cross-cultural communication. The effect of culture on international businessmen ventures is multifaceted. Cultural differences deeply affects market behavior. International marketers, therefore, need to be as familiar as possible with the cultural traits of any country they want to do business with. These differences require international businessmen to have good analytical abilities and sound business acumen to make viable decisions and operate successfully. Practically all business decisions are culture-bound.

Abstract:
In the two last decades, the cities were within the transformation period of their economic and spatial structure in order to be adapted to competitive global system. In addition, the decrease of industry sector and its decentralization to outer city, increase of service sector with the help of technological developments and its centralization are the core assets of the globalization. In compatible with the socio-spatial and economical aspects of globalization phenomenon, the structural transformation of industry in Istanbul that is the most important production center of Turkey, are on the agenda. In the light with these arguments, this thesis study aims to highlight the relocation tendency of industry in Istanbul with reference to the impact and context of globalization. In this thesis, in order to determine the relocation tendency of the position of industries and sub-sectors, the questionnaire that prepared by Istanbul Metropolitan Planning Center is taken as the base data source. In compatible with the analysis that derives from this questionnaire<br>the industry sub-sectors, firms sizes, their spatial distributions and their tendencies to relocate or to decentralize their production sites will be clarified.

Gangopadhyay, Monalisa. "Hindutva Meets Globalization: The Impact on Hindu Urban Media Women." FIU Digital Commons, 2010. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/305.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the impact of globalization and religious nationalism on the personal and professional lives of urban Hindu middle class media women. The research demonstrates how newly strengthened forces of globalization and Hindutva shape Indian womanhood. The research rests on various data that reveal how Indian women interpret and negotiate constructed identities. The study seeks to give voice to the objectified by scrutinizing and challenging the stereotypical modern faces of Indian womanhood seen in the narratives of globalization and Hindutva. Feminist open-ended interviewing was conducted in English and Hindi in New Delhi, the capital of India, with 23 Hindu women, employed by electronic and print media corporations. Accumulated data were analyzed and interpreted using feminist critical discourse analysis. Findings from the study indicate that while the Indian middle class women have embraced professional opportunities presented by globalization, they remain circumscribed by mutating gender politics. The research also finds that as academic and professional progress empower the women within their homes, their public lives have become fraught with increasing gender violence and decreasing recourse to justice. Therefore, women accept the power stratification of their lives as being dependent on spatial and temporal distinctions, and have learnt to engage and strategize with the public environment for physical safety and personal-professional progress. While the media women see systemic masculine domination as being symbiotic with tenets of religious nationalism, they exhibit an unquestioned embracing of capitalism/globalization as the means of empowerment. My research also strongly indicates the importance of the media’s role in shaping gender dynamics in a global context. In conclusion, my research shows the mediawomen’s immense agency in pursuing academic and professional careers while being aware of deeply ingrained gender roles through their strong commitment towards their families. The findings of this study contribute to the literature on Third World nationalism, urban globalization and understandings of reworked-renewed masculine domination. Finally, the study also engages with recent scholarship on the Indian middle class (See Nanda 2010; Shenoy 2009; Lukose 2005; and Radhakrishnan 2006) while simultaneously addressing the notions of privilege and disengagement levied at the middle class woman, a symbiosis of idealization and imprisonment.

Abstract:
[toliau žr. visą tekstą]<br>Globalization is a process that nobody can stop. The best solution for the defense is to stop the resistance against this process. Globalization does not give heed to borders; it progresses every day and involves all domains of the country. Globalization is understood as a growing interdependence of world economy, as an economic integration of different countries through an international trade, the movement of capital and the movement of people with their feelings and knowledge. Globalization is the penetration of the global market into the life of the countries, caused by the strengthening international financial markets, rising world trade, creation of multinational business and progress in telecommunications. General globalization processes show the benefit of free economic relations between the states for all participating countries. Increased capital mobility limits the opportunities of economics politics and develops pressure for the market to implement useful politics. The benefits of globalization are obvious: it is faster growth, higher standards of life and new opportunities. The phenomenon of globalization seems to weaken the traditional power and sovereignty of nation-states, since much of the aspects seem to be out of control for the states. On of the means of market’s mergers between Lithuania and foreign countries is foreign direct investment (FDI), international trade and migration. These are the key factors for moving globalization process toward different... [to full text]

Reader, Daniel B. "Sustainability with Globalization: An Unsustainable Proposition." TopSCHOLAR®, 2006. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/92.

Full text
Abstract:
Globalization is recognized as a world-encompassing phenomenon, even as its benefits are debated. Sustainability, the capacity to maintain high standards of living through generations, is at stake. This paper examines the problems of sustainability with globalization from several perspectives. High statistical correlation between indices of globalization and environmental degradation (r2 = 0.977, p < .001) is found using multi-dimensional scaling software. The socially destabilizing, culture flattening effects of globalization are examined, and the terms ‘nationalism’ and ‘terrorism’ are defined. On the basis of its medial position among the indices of both globalization and environmental degradation, Chile is explored in a case study of the interaction. Conclusions regarding Chile’s vulnerabilities are reached, and the country’s environmental, social, and economic ‘weak spots’ are identified. The ethical positions of globalization and sustainability are considered, and the conclusion that there is very little that can be done to alter the nature of the interaction is drawn. It is suggested that globalization minimizes the prospects of success in efforts toward sustainability by maximizing vulnerabilities among sustainability’s components.

Okogbule, Nlerum Sunday. "An appraisal of the mutual impact between globalization and human rights in Africa." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3309/.

Full text
Abstract:
Globalization has become one of the defining features of the contemporary world, and is, no doubt, having some impact on human rights. In examining the nature of the impact with particular reference to Africa, this Thesis challenges the conventional scholarship which has so far concentrated on the impact of globalization on human rights, ignoring the possible impact of human rights on processes of globalization, and argues that in order to obtain a holistic view of the relationship between globalization and human rights, sufficient attention must equally be given to the corresponding impact of human rights norms on processes of globalization. In support of this formulation, three levels of analysis are adopted in the Thesis, namely; international, regional and national systems. It is argued that at the international level, the impact of human rights norms on processes of globalization is evidenced by the fact that international economic institutions such as International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank and World Trade Organization (WTO), which initially ignored human rights norms in their policies, programmes and operations, have now embraced such norms. At the regional level, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, embodying human rights norms attentive to the African condition, has been used to constrain processes of globalization. Finally, using three African countries, namely, South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya as case studies, it is demonstrated that at the national levels, human rights norms are also impacting on processes of globalization, as the activities of transnational corporations, and those of governments based on the dictates of economic globalization, are being challenged by human rights NGOs and other social movements. It is on this score that the ‘Mutual Impact thesis’ is formulated, the contention being that for a proper understanding of whether the impact of globalization on human rights is positive or negative, a debate that has engaged the attention of some writers, the preliminary issue of the corresponding impact of human rights on globalization must also be taken into account.

Bishop, Beverly. "Risutora : the impact of globalization and restructuring upon women in the Japanese workforce." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2003. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14752/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of the relationship between gender and globalization in one specific national context: Japan. Japan's position as an affluent, industrialized liberal democracy, with a distinctive model of capitalism, means that Japanese women's experiences of globalization differ from those of women both elsewhere in Asia, and in other First World countries. The actions of the Japanese state and Japanese companies have been instrumental in the globalization of production, which is now having reciprocal effects upon the Japanese national model of capitalism. In response to global economic change, the Japanese model of capitalism is being intentionally restructured through company practice and legal change. This restructuring (risutora) impacts differently upon men and women, as the liberalizing processes associated with globalization interact with specific local institutions, including the ideal of the three generation family and the position of women in the Japanese national model of capitalism. After an analysis of the mainstream literature about globalization, the state and historical institutionalism and feminist literature about gender and globalization, the thesis demonstrates that the complex trends associated with globalization have produced pressures for two kinds of, ostensibly contradictory, employment reforms in Japan. There are pressures for labour market deregulation, to increase the international competitiveness of Japanese production. There are also pressures for the 're'-regulation of labour to establish a principle of sexual equality at work. The deregulation of employment, including the removal of sex-specific protective legislation, has made it increasingly difficult for many women to pursue full-time careers. A detailed examination of the impact of the Equal Employment Opportunities Law (EEOL) shows that this legislation has led to the formalization of the gender-based segregation of regular workers, and encouraged employers to employ an increasing proportion of women in non-regular positions. Nevertheless, social and political changes, which are also associated with globalization, are leading an increasing number of women to seek higher status careers or longer tenure in the workforce. These changes are also providing campaigners for women's labour rights with new opportunities for effective action, as this thesis demonstrates, using a case study of an activist group.

Orozalieva, Karina. "Impact of globalization on socio-economic and political development of the Central Asian countries." Scholar Commons, 2010. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1730.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to understand the economic, social and political impacts of globalization on the Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Central Asian countries in general. The empirical studies based on panel data analyses and the case study on Kyrgyzstan demonstrate that the socio-economic effect of globalization on development of these countries is twofold. On the one hand benefits produced by globalization such as migration and remittances can be useful for economic development in the short run. They take a role of a "shock absorber" of the challenges that are associated with transition to a free market economy. On the other hand, their long term economic impacts can be negative especially in the areas of industry and export. Moreover, it can have a negative effect in the future creating a loss of human capital and distorting traditional forms of social structures within societies. The political impact of globalization is also dual. The empirical analysis that is based on simple regression analysis demonstrates that adoption of liberal democracy model by Central Asian governments is not a necessary condition for successful economic growth. Countries can be democratic and have low or medium socio-economic development such as India or Ukraine. They also can be undemocratic and developed as China or Kazakhstan. To find a certain connection between democracy and development it is needed to look at other important economic, geo-political and social factors that can contribute to the development. On the other hand regional and global challenges produced by globalization forced Central Asian countries to find a political position that would satisfy interests of inside and outside actors as well as provide proper environment for stable political and economic development. The descriptive analysis demonstrates that Central Asian countries chose the path of political integration and cooperation by being involved in regional institutions such as SCO and EEC. This strategy can help them to withstand challenges produced by globalization and promote political stability and economic growth in the region.

Flynn, Colleen Evadne. "THE IMPACT OF CULTURE IN AN ERA OF PARTIAL GLOBALIZATION ON STANDARD BUSINESS PRACTICES." NSUWorks, 2009. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/hsbe_etd/34.

Full text
Abstract:
In this age of globalization, or more specifically, partial globalization, the significance of cultural shifts in various parts of the world, is considerable. In consideration of cultural convergence and divergence, it must be investigated whether or not cultures are gaining more similarities and less differences (convergence) due to globalization and whether or not standard business practices will emerge as a result. An adaptation of the Dorfman and Howell (1988) survey was used to provide a better understanding and comparison of the special conditions that characterize business practices of Jamaicans living in Jamaica, and Jamaicans living in the U.S.A. or whose behavior have been impacted by the U.S. culture. The results indicate that there are no significant differences in the areas of power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity and paternalism which suggest strength of the Jamaican culture. However there was some evidence of crossvergence or possibly divergence as there was a significant difference in individualism between the native Jamaican and the global Jamaican. The apparent shift in individualism, which is in alignment with Hofstede's (1986) belief that as a result of westernization and teaching in a multinational classroom a shift in individualism is possible, needs to be further investigated in light of the relatively small sample size used in the study. There was no difference between the native male Jamaican and the global male Jamaican in all the five cultural dimensions. This research provides students, managers, business leaders and entrepreneurs with information that can help business practices, through the better understanding of cultural orientation of the NATIVE Jamaican (Jamaicans living in Jamaica) and the GLOBAL Jamaican (Jamaicans living in the U.S.A. for an extended period or who have been exposed to the U.S. culture for an extended period of time, leading to improved business and economic performance. The researcher suggests further research utilizing a larger sample size to investigate not only how demographic factors such as gender, age, and educational level affect cultural orientation but also to explore the effects of economic ties, family ties, cable television and internet usage on the cultural orientation among the native and global Jamaican and whether convergence, crossvergence and divergence occurs. Also, it is worth undertaking a study of the observed shift in greater individualism for the global Jamaican to discover whether the change is of any permanence and the contributing factors to the differences to these values.

Abstract:
Anthony Giddens' ideas on modernity and globalization show that globalization is modernity at the global level. The three characteristics of modernity: time-space separation, disembedding of social systems, and reflexivity have all been intensified in the last twenty years. Globalization is, on one hand, pulling different cultures together to form a global world; on the other hand, diversifying and fragmenting the social contexts of human activities. The modern individual struggles to adapt to the different social milieux he is involved in and finds it difficult to form a coherent identity. Modern social systems provide more security; it also creates risks of high-consequence. Human life is threatened with a sense of meaninglessness. Giddens suggests, in order to liberate themselves, human individuals should take more responsibility to make decisions on their own lifestyles and on social issues. Education should aim to develop the individual's ability to make rational choices.

Bahador, Babak. "The impact of globalization on war : the CNN effect and western policy before the Kosovo intervention." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2005. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2904/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to provide insights regarding the impact of globalization on war. The methodology that is used to assess the primary question (What is the impact of globalization on war.) involves the utilisation of one manifestation of globalization - the CNN effect - that is operationalised to assess one area of potential impact - Western foreign policy during the Kosovo civil war. The dissertation is arranged into two sections. The first is largely theoretical and defines globalization, explains how the CNN effect is a manifestation of globalization and reviews the CNN effect on war at a theoretical level. The second is largely empirical and involves a detailed case study of Kosovo specific media coverage and foreign policy in the West over the fifteen-month period before the 1999 NATO intervention. The employment of this particular case study opens other areas of potential insight that are also explored in this dissertation. The first relates to foreign policy making and how the CNN effect has impacted its traditional role and operation. The second relates to the specific case study itself and the role of the Western media in NATO's decision to intervene in Kosovo and the specific events that led to this decision. If it were demonstrated that the CNN effect did indeed play a role in this intervention, this would be a useful interpretive addition to the current analysis of this particular conflict. In addressing these questions, it is also hoped that a more detailed understanding of the nature of globalization itself emerges. As theory should develop from practice, and not the other way around, it is only through attempts to apply abstract and novel concepts such as globalization to practice that current attempts at theorising can improve.

It tests theories of distributive politics by examining the effects of democracy and globalization on the welfare state in Latin America. The study emphasizes that the politics of resource allocation decisions are best understood by measures of social spending relative to the national budget instead of GDP. Using time-series data for 15 nations between 1973 and 2000, it examines how three key political factors influence the responsiveness of the welfare state in Latin America: a) the democratic character of political institutions; b) the electoral institutions that channel voter preferences to bring in to power new democratic governments with a mandate; and, c) the degree of integration of states into the global economy. Based on a battery of specifications, the study shows that democracies allocate greater shares of their budget to public health and education and reduce regressive pension benefits. It demonstrates, however, that expenditures begin to favor more entrenched power groups after the period of democratic transition ends and democracy is consolidated. It shows that social policies in Latin America are used as an instrument to reward voters and not a tool to manipulate the outcome of elections. The dissertation also provides evidence that more open economies in Latin America seek to compensate citizens by increasing pensions, but that globalization has not triggered a similar increase of investments in health and education.<br>A tese busca examinar dois desenvolvimentos de grandes conseqüências na América Latina nas últimas três décadas do século XX.

Her, Jia-Huey. "The Globalization of English: Its Impact on English Language Education in the Tertiary Education Sector in Taiwan." The University of Waikato, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2809.

Abstract:
The overall agenda for the research reported here grew out of semi-structured interviews with senior educational managers from a tertiary educational institution in Taiwan. These managers raised a number of issues, including the changing profile of tertiary students, the changing nature of English curricula, the increasing need for English teaching staff to be adaptable, highly qualified and research-active, and the growing pressure on institutions to introduce English language proficiency benchmarking. Each of these issues can be related to the impact of globalization and, in particular, the impact of the globalization of English, on the education sector. Following a critical review of selected literature on the impact of globalization on the teaching and learning of English, each of these issues, as it affects the tertiary education sector in Taiwan, was explored. Analysis of the Taiwanese national curriculum guidelines for schools, strongly influenced by academics in the tertiary education sector, revealed a number of problems relating to a lack of proficiency benchmarking and a lack of coherence, consistency and transparency in some areas. These problems may be associated with the initial phase of transition from a grammar-based curriculum to a more communicatively-oriented, outcomes-centered one. Problems of a similar type were indicated in responses to questions relating to curriculum matters included in a questionnaire distributed to a sample of teachers of English in the tertiary sector. Among other things revealed by questionnaire responses was the fact that many survey participants had received no training in English teaching. The results of a C-test (one that was initially used in a major European study) taken by a sample of entry-level and exit-level Bachelors degree students indicated a wide variation in proficiency, with individual scores differing by as much as 64 percentage points in the case of exit-level students. Furthermore, there was a difference of almost 10 percentage points between the mean scores of students from two different institutions who had majored in English. These results indicate some of the difficulties that Taiwan faces in attempting to establish graduation proficiency benchmarking. -ii- C-test participants completed a background questionnaire, the responses indicating a generally positive attitude towards English-speaking people, a general willingness to use English in situations where there was the option of not doing so, and a strong tendency towards instrumental motivation. Although one of the factors that appeared to have a positive impact on C-test performance was time spent in an English-speaking country, fewer than 18% of respondents had done so. Although there appears to be considerable anxiety and uncertainty associated with the teaching of English at tertiary level in Taiwan, and some genuine cause for concern, there are also many positive indicators of future success. Teachers and educational managers are aware of the problems they currently face and appear determined to resolve them. Taiwanese academics are increasingly involved in language-related research and increasingly prepared to interrogate their own practices, and Taiwan, unlike some other countries in Asia, is moving towards graduation proficiency benchmarking.

Abstract:
The Women's Revolution in 2015 has led to a drastic shift in the ways women are portrayed in professional wrestling. The Women's Revolution came as a result of the social unrest over the lack of time women were receiving on the televised shows. Where women's storylines had centered on their sexuality, they are now presented as equal to their male counterparts after the Women's Revolution. Through an exploration of concepts in globalization, commodification, and socially produced spaces, this research seeks to understand and contextualize the Women's Revolution, the degree to which the portrayed women's equality has been achieved, and the resulting impacts of the female superstars overall. I argue that that this "equality" has been achieved through inscribing the traditionally masculine qualities of wrestling to women, has resulted in an unequal distribution of opportunities to particular female superstars rather than equality for all women on the shows, and that phallocentric objectification of the female superstars still occurs in certain aspects of professional wrestling.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary aim of this study is to investigate the socia-political impact of globalisation on South Africa. The objective of the study is to gain a better understanding of how globalisation has impacted on govemance, policy-making, culture and civil society with special reference to South Africa. The study also looks at the effects of globalisation in terms of gains and losses accrued by South Africa and other African countries Globalisation presents many challenges to developing nations, as the effects of this phenomenon have been uneven. South Africa as a developing country became reintegrated to the world economy after the first democratic elections in 1994. The country re-entered the world stage at a time when the process of globalisation was gaining momentum. The process has had an impact on policy making which resulted in a shift from the original policy of RDP to the GEAR policy. Globalisation has had the effect of increasing in and out of the country. On the economic front foreign direct investment has increased and South Africa has entered into a number of multilateral trade agreements with the different countries. On the political arena, governance hiis been affected with emphasis on the democratic principles of governance. South Africa has been playing an active role in making Africa a stable continent advocating democratic principles of governance. Together with Nigeria, South Africa have been leaders of the African Union and its marketing wing the New Partnership for Africa's Development. President Mbeki has been the selling the vision of NEPAD to leaders of industrialised countries and South Africa is one of the first countries that will be subjected to the peer review monitoring system. South Africa has been active as well in peacekeeping missions in the continent where South Africa's troops can be found in countries such as Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi. As globalisation impacts on society, it is inevitable that culture will be affected . Whether one views cultural changes as disadvantageous or advantageous depends on the individual. Globalisation through technology has made cross-cultural exchanges across borders possible with the result it is easy nowadays for people to move across within a limited amount of time. What this means is that globalisation has compressed time and space. Globalisation has met with resistance as evidenced by the anti-globalisation sentiments expressed by different civil society groups whenever there are meetings of the multilateral institutions. What needs to be done by the industrialised countries is to ensure that benefits of globalisation are filtered through so that even people in developing countries can enjoy them.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die hoofdoel van hierdie studie is om die sosio-politieke impak van globalisering op Suid-Afrika te ondersoek.

Abstract:
The primary focus of this dissertation is to determine the degree to which political, economic, and socio-cultural elites in Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago influenced the development of the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) original jurisdiction. As members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), both states replaced their protectionist model with open regionalism at the end of the 1980s. Open regionalism was adopted to make CARICOM member states internationally competitive. Open regionalism was also expected to create a stable regional trade environment. To ensure a stable economic environment, a regional court with original jurisdiction was proposed. A six member Preparatory Committee on the Caribbean Court of Justice (PREPCOM), on which Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago sat, was formed to draft the Agreement Establishing the Caribbean Court of Justice that would govern how the Court would interpret the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas (RTC) and enforce judgments. Through the use of qualitative research methods, namely elite interviews, document data, and text analysis, and a focus on three levels of analysis, that is, the international, regional, and domestic, three major conclusions are drawn. First, changes in the international economic environment caused Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago to support the establishment of a regional court. Second, Jamaica had far greater influence on the final structure of the CCJ than Trinidad & Tobago. Third, it was found that in both states the political elite had the greatest influence on the development and structure of the CCJ. The economic elite followed by the socio-cultural elite were found to have a lesser impact. These findings are significant because they account for the impact of elites and elite behavior on institutions in a much-neglected category of states: the developing world.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the effects of the financial crisis on the South African economy. In order to do this, an index which describes the financial conditions of the South African economy is constructed and computed. The index indicates that domestic South African financial conditions have deteriorated substantially during the period under study and so the study investigates how this has impacted on the country’s economic growth. A VAR model with South African variables is specified and used to assess the quantitative effects of the financial crisis on South African real GDP growth. Results suggest that the South African economy was not significantly affected by the crisis, but economic growth was slowed down and may still grow substantially slower in the next few years due to the financial crisis. These results corroborate the theoretical predictions and are also supported by previous studies.

Sinno, Zane Siraj. "The impact on language learning of Lebanese students’ attitude towards English in the context of globalization and anti-Americanism." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/4234.

Full text
Abstract:
Second language acquisition (SLA) is embedded in a complex network of influential variables, among which is the socio-political context. Indeed, researchers agree that attitudes and motivation are significant in determining linguistic proficiency and achievement (Gardner, 1985, 2001, 2004; Oxford and Shearin, 1994; Oxford, 1996; Dörnyei, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2003). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether negative attitudes existed towards English as an international language in the context of globalization and anti- Americanism, and if so, whether they interfered with second language acquisition. Data was collected through qualitative research methods, namely individual and group interviews and in class writing assignments. The students considered English indispensable for employment and career advancement (extrinsic motivation or instrumental motivation). This outweighed negative attitudes associated with the target language community (TLC) and the power of the target language (TL). The study signals a parallel duality where participants acknowledged the significance of the English language and wanted to learn it even though they were aware of political discrimination against Arabs and the linguistic power exerted by the dominant powers. Even though attitudes towards the L2 and the TLC impact language acquisition, it seems that in this sample, they did not have a direct effect on L2 motivation as displayed in the willingness to use the language or to learn it. Most importantly, my study identifies a desire to integrate, not to a specific TLC but to a global community and workplace to which the English language provided access. One reason fueling this integrative motivation is the conflict zone in which the participants live. The socio-political as well as economic context and its concomitant Arab identity inferiority complex encourage students to seek to escape from the limitations of the local workplace and context.

Becker, Keith Frederick. "A methodology to enable rapid evaluation of aviation environmental metrics and aircraft technologies." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/41086.

Full text
Abstract:
Commercial aviation has become an integral part of modern society and enables unprecedented global connectivity by increasing rapid business, cultural, and personal connectivity. In the decades following World War II, passenger travel through commercial aviation quickly grew at a rate of roughly 8% per year globally. The FAA's most recent Terminal Area Forecast predicts growth to continue at a rate of 2.5% domestically, and the market outlooks produced by Airbus and Boeing generally predict growth to continue at a rate of 5% per year globally over the next several decades, which translates into a need for up to 30,000 new aircraft produced by 2025. With such large numbers of new aircraft potentially entering service, any negative consequences of commercial aviation must undergo examination and mitigation by governing bodies so that growth may still be achieved. Options to simultaneously grow while reducing environmental impact include evolution of the commercial fleet through changes in operations, aircraft mix, and technology adoption. Methods to rapidly evaluate fleet environmental metrics are needed to enable decision makers to quickly compare the impact of different scenarios and weigh the impact of multiple policy options. As the fleet evolves, interdependencies may emerge in the form of tradeoffs between improvements in different environmental metrics as new technologies are brought into service. In order to include the impacts of these interdependencies on fleet evolution, physics-based modeling is required at the appropriate level of fidelity. Evaluation of environmental metrics in a physics-based manner can be done at the individual aircraft level, but will then not capture aggregate fleet metrics. Contrastingly, evaluation of environmental metrics at the fleet level is already being done for aircraft in the commercial fleet, but current tools and approaches require enhancement because they currently capture technology implementation through post-processing, which does not capture physical interdependencies that may arise at the aircraft-level. The goal of the work that has been conducted here was the development of a methodology to develop surrogate fleet approaches that leverage the capability of physics-based aircraft models and the development of connectivity to fleet-level analysis tools to enable rapid evaluation of fuel burn and emissions metrics. Instead of requiring development of an individual physics-based model for each vehicle in the fleet, the surrogate fleet approaches seek to reduce the number of such models needed while still accurately capturing performance of the fleet. By reducing the number of models, both development time and execution time to generate fleet-level results may also be reduced. The initial steps leading to surrogate fleet formulation were a characterization of the commercial fleet into groups based on capability followed by the selection of a reference vehicle model and a reference set of operations for each group. Next, three potential surrogate fleet approaches were formulated. These approaches include the parametric correction factor approach, in which the results of a reference vehicle model are corrected to match the aggregate results of each group; the average replacement approach, in which a new vehicle model is developed to generate aggregate results of each group, and the best-in-class replacement approach, in which results for a reference vehicle are simply substituted for the entire group. Once candidate surrogate fleet approaches were developed, they were each applied to and evaluated over the set of reference operations. Then each approach was evaluated for their ability to model variations in operations. Finally, the ability of each surrogate fleet approach to capture implementation of different technology suites along with corresponding interdependencies between fuel burn and emissions was evaluated using the concept of a virtual fleet to simulate the technology response of multiple aircraft families. The results of experimentation led to a down selection to the best approach to use to rapidly characterize the performance of the commercial fleet for accurately in the context of acceptability of current fleet evaluation methods. The parametric correction factor and average replacement approaches were shown to be successful in capturing reference fleet results as well as fleet performance with variations in operations. The best-in-class replacement approach was shown to be unacceptable as a model for the larger fleet in each of the scenarios tested. Finally, the average replacement approach was the only one that was successful in capturing the impact of technologies on a larger fleet. These results are meaningful because they show that it is possible to calculate the fuel burn and emissions of a larger fleet with a reduced number of physics-based models within acceptable bounds of accuracy. At the same time, the physics-based modeling also provides the ability to evaluate the impact of technologies on fleet-level fuel burn and emissions metrics. The value of such a capability is that multiple future fleet scenarios involving changes in both aircraft operations and technology levels may now be rapidly evaluated to inform and equip policy makers of the implications of impacts of changes on fleet-level metrics.

De, Villiers Gerrit. "An overview of the impact of change on the global wine industry." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51615.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This mini-study project was undertaken to investigate the dynamics of the international wine industry in an era of increased globalisation. The capacity of old and new wine producing countries to adapt to the new dynamics was assessed by determining their competitive positions in the global industry. The impact of industry driving forces on trends and future developments was determined and predictions were made for the immediate future of the industry. The cyclical nature of the global wine industry was investigated and the industry's ability to balance supply and demand in the foreseeable future was assessed. Recommendations were finally made on how to establish greater stability in the global wine industry. Wine consumption in traditional wine countries decreased as a result of changing life styles, and prompted the wine industry to focus increasingly on importing countries. Transformation within the wine industry is assisted by the innovative and aggressive marketing strategies of new wine countries. Product differentiation, brand building and the development of a more effective distribution channel are allowing new wine countries to increase market share at the expense of old wine countries. The global wine industry experiences cyclical instability in supply and demand. Evidence suggests that a cycle is completed every eight years. A threatening oversupply of quality white wine will result in increased competition and lower prices, while red wine supply is likely to exceed demand from 2003 onwards. The wine industry needs to introduce some measure of control to co-ordinate expansion and replacement programs of vineyards with an increased quality focus. Producers and wineries will have to be far more sensitive to changing consumer attitudes and life styles and should develop appropriate production strategies in order to meet changing demands.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie werkstuk is onderneem om die veranderende dinamika binne die internasionale wynindustrie te ondersoek teen 'n agtergrond van toenemende globalisering.

Abstract:
Many organizations use global incentive systems without recognizing the suitability to foreign subsidiaries' local cultures. Applying incentives to employees in foreign subsidiaries without considering culture's impact on incentive system effectiveness may dilute the incentives' effectiveness. The majority of the incentive system literature is based on Anglo-Saxon notions of incentive system effectiveness and employee motivation. And assuming that culture impacts incentive system effectiveness, the Anglo-Saxon notions may be inapplicable in a non-Anglo-Saxon context. This study uses a sequential exploratory mixed method to explore culture's impact on incentive systems, and to analyze the applicability of Anglo-Saxon incentive system literature to non-Anglo-Saxon cultures. The study develops a five-dimensional incentive system framework that, together with a literature review of Swedish, Japanese, and South Korean culture, interprets empirical findings. Empirical findings from Swedish organizations operating in Japan and South Korea are used to form hypotheses and a basis for qualitative interviews with representatives from the Japanese and South Korean subsidiaries. Sweden, Japan, and South Korea are strongly represented on the global market with multinational organizations covering a wide range of industries. Together they constitute a large portion of global business, and are good representatives for business in Europe and Asia. The study's results establish that culture should be considered an important determinant of incentive system effectiveness, and that the Anglo-Saxon literature may be too insular to be applied outside Anglo-Saxon countries.

The study also sought to highlight the contribution of oral literature and its pedagogic value in addressing the aims and objectives of the Namibian education system in regard to the training of learners to acquire the skills, knowledge, attitudes and values needed for them to become effective and valuable members of society. The theoretical framework that underpins the study, the functionalist approach, foregrounds the functional values of social systems and structures. Oral heritage is seen as having various societal functions, pre-eminently that of moulding, educating and shaping young people to be functional members of the society (Finnegan, 1970). The aims of this study were pursued through a case study of two educational contexts in the Zambezi (formerly Caprivi) region of north-east Namibia. The inquiry in the formal educational setting was done in four schools, while that into the non-formal educational setting took place in four rural villages. The latter were crucial in the study in that they were home to research subjects who possessed valuable insights into the pedagogic role of oral literature as a form of community based education. The four schools were purposefully selected for offering Silozi, a lingua franca in Zambezi region, as a first language subject

碩士<br>國立高雄應用科技大學<br>金融系金融資訊碩士班<br>103<br>This paper intends to explore how globalization affects housing prices. In order to explore whether globlalization will affect housing price, this paper combines DiPasquale and Wheaton (1996) model and the globalization index of Dreher .et al. (2006) to set up a model of housing market. Empirical data is the annual panel data over the period 1980-2011, and the methodology is the generalized method of moments. The main findings are as follows : First, the empirical results from the full sample group, the decreasing of long-term rates will rise housing prices, and the degree of globalization will increase housing prices. Second, the empirical results of the developed countries, economic expansion and higher construction costs will rise the housing prices, while the higher long-term rates will decrease housing prices. As the result of globalization index, the higher degree of social globalization will increase housing price, but the higher degree of economic globalization and political globalization will decrease housing price. However, the higher overall index of globalization will make the housing prices fall. Third, the results of the developing countries show that the economic expansion and higher construction costs will increase housing price, but the higher long-term rates will lower the housing prices. As to the globalization index, the higher degree of economic globalization will increase housing price, but the higher degree of political globalization will lower housing price. The higher overall index of globalization will cause the housing prices rising.

Abstract:
碩士<br>淡江大學<br>歐洲研究所<br>91<br>ABSTRACT: Before 1980’s, many western scholars and political elites employ an adjective “global” to express “the whole world” and describe transnational situation in the world politics, economics and international relations. From the beginning of the 1980’s, the word “globalization” becomes an important key word to sustain a new relationship between nations and the world society. The impact of the globalization does not only limit in political, nation security sections, but also influence human’s daily life. Therefore, more and more people talks about: “What is globalization?” and “the influence and the impact of the globalization”. By the development of new technologies and inventions of new information, the globalization can let the world become more economic, more convenient, and faster than before. Therefore, the border of nation states becomes unclear; France is no exception. Affected by the tendency of global economics, France has to change its traditional economical policy─Le dirigisme, into markets since 1983. Moreover, French great president Mr. François Mittérrand devoted himself to promote the European integration in order to try to form a unique and important role in an American leading world. Otherwise, French people dose not totally accept the great influence of globalization. As the loyalty believer of Socialism as they are, they estimate that phenomena of the globalization would cause sinful influences and damage their own culture and national identity. Therefore, in my thesis, I shall study the theory of Globalization and try to find how France confronts and deals with its impact.
