Abstract:
<em>The corona pandemic has caused global problems, including Indonesia. One way to reduce the spread of the coronavirus is to wash your hands frequently with soap or hand sanitizer. Many types of hand sanitizers were developed to support efforts to prevent the spread of the corona. For this reason, this paper proposes two types of Contactless Hans Sanitizer (CHS) prototypes. Function tests and user satisfaction tests were carried out to determine the performance of the CHS. The test results show that type A CHS which only works fully electrically is more reliable than type B which works with electrical and mechanical systems. Of the 10 respondents, 90% chose CHS type A.</em>

Roesch, J. Richard. "Hand grip performance with the bare hand in the extravehicular activity globe." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91148.

Full text
Abstract:
Astronauts have complained of difficulty in grasping tools, hand fatigue, and hand/forearm pain during extravehicular activities. This study was conducted to examine hand grip performance with a bare hand and in a spacesuit glove at two different pressures, with three hand positions and two elbow positions. Sixteen subjects, selected from the suited-subject pool at the Johnson Space Center, gripped a hand dynamometer encased in a vacuum chamber designed to simulate the operating pressures in space. The results for the bare hand condition showed a significant effect for hand position and a significant elbow/hand interaction. The spacesuit glove at operating pressure was responsible for an average 42% grip strength decrement from the bare hand condition. A new procedure for determining hand size from projected hand surface area revealed that bare and gloved-hand grip strength was highly correlated with hand size, as were body weight, height, and forearm circumference.

Qoursheh, Amjad M. M. "A Muslim's perspective towards Hans Kungs concept of global ethic." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.497551.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis seeks to examine the validity of participation in the project of global ethic by Muslims in the light of the ethical system derived basically from the Qur'an. It is to investigate the basis upon which Muslims can co-operate with non-Muslims in the field of ethics, in a world that has become global. The hypothesis to be examined through this research is that the project seems to be beneficial for human society and we can find a support from within the Qur'anic ethical system. To examine this assumption, the research assessed the new international context i. e. the phenomenon of globalisation. Then it focuses on the pioneer and initiator of the project Hans Kung, to understand his background and motives behind the project. Subsequently, surveys some of the international (Christian and Muslim) responses towards the project. Finally the study highlights the basic elements of the ethical theory derived form the Qur'an to examine the congruence or non-congruence, the compatibility or non-compatibility, the common ground or not, between the project and the Qur'anic ethical system. The most important results of this research are that: The Islamic ethical system contains encouragement for Muslims to be part of such a universal project, but even with this encouragement, the priority for Muslims in situations of conflict with regards to any act required from the project, should ultimately be for their faith-based ethical principles. Apart from this restriction, and the possibility that the project might be abused as a new western tool of political domination, this research finds no reason why Muslims should not be part of the supportive and active groups in the project.

Iserson, Kenneth V. "Glove and mitten protection in extreme cold weather: an Antarctic study." CO-ACTION PUBLISHING, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/622383.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Myths, misconceptions and a general lack of information surround the use of gloves and mittens in extreme cold environments. Objective. This study assessed how well an assortment of gloves and mittens performed in a very cold environment. Methods. A convenience sample of gloves and mittens were tested in Antarctica during the winter of 2016 using a calibrated thermometer (range: -148 degrees F to +158 degrees F/-1008C to +70 degrees C) three times over a 0.5-mile distance (similar to 20 minutes). A small sensor on a 10-foot-long cable was taped to the radial surface of the distal small finger on the non-dominant hand. The tested clothing was donned over the probe, the maximum temperature inside the glove/mitten was established near a building exit (ambient temperature approximately 54 degrees F/12 degrees C), and the building was exited, initiating the test. The hand was kept immobile during the test. Some non-heated gloves were tested with chemical heat warmers placed over the volar or dorsal wrist. Results. The highest starting (96 degrees F/36 degrees C) and ending (82 degrees F/28 degrees C) temperatures were with electrically heated gloves. The lowest starting temperature was with electrically heated gloves with the power off (63 degrees F/17 degrees C). Non-heated gloves with an inserted chemical hand warmer had the lowest minimum temperature (33 degrees F/1 degrees C). Maximum temperatures for gloves/mittens did not correlate well with their minimum temperature. Conclusions. Coverings that maintained finger temperatures within a comfortable and safe range (at or above 59 degrees F/15 degrees C) included the heated gloves and mittens (including some with the power off) and mittens with liners. Mittens without liners (shell) generally performed better than unheated gloves. Better results generally paralleled the item's cost. Inserting chemical heat warmers at the wrist increased heat loss, possibly through the exposed area around the warmer.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 18).
An apparatus was developed that provides a dynamic representation of the hand-glove interaction inside a baseball glove during catching situations. Until recent history, baseball manufacturers relied primarily upon player input and practical necessity to develop their technology; the use of scientific exploration was minimal. To add scientific technology to the design of baseball gloves, the project consisted of a sensor glove component and a visual interface, developed to better understand the hand-glove interaction. The sensor glove was created by attaching FlexiForce A201 sensors to a golf glove to fit inside a baseball glove. The sensors measure the forces in a variety of locations on the back and front of the hand. The project resulted in a simple user interface that presents a better representation of the hand-glove interaction and provides a means to better identify characteristics of glove use.

Krewson, Corey Nicholas. "Near Real-Time Flood Forecasts from Global Hydrologic Forecasting Models." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7476.

Full text
Abstract:
This research assesses possible methods for extending the Streamflow Prediction Tool from a streamflow forecasting model to a flood extent forecasting model. This new flood extent forecasting model would allow valuable and easy to understand information be disseminated in a timely manner for flood preparation and flood response. The Height Above Nearest Drainage (HAND) method and AutoRoute method were considered for flood extent models but the HAND was the better option for its simple and quick computation as well as its viability on a global scale. Due to the importance of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) in these flood extent models, an analysis was performed on the sensitivity and response of different DEMs with the HAND method. The HAND method with the differing DEMs was also analyzed using the Streamflow Prediction Tool for model boundary conditions against Sentinel-1 SAR generated flood extent images from August 24, 2017. The MERIT DEM performed the best in this analysis and is recommended for future research in creating a global forecasting flood extent model. The HAND method covered about 25% of the generated flood extent images and more complex flood extent models may need to be considered in areas where HAND underperforms. Finally, a proof of concept flood extent model was created and deployed as a web application for easy accessibility and distribution of flood information. Additional research to consider is flood impact based on affected population or an economic analysis, as well as optimizing model parameters for increased accuracy and performance. Additional research is also needed for HAND DEM analysis in other parts of the world.

In ASME 2013 32nd International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2013-10847.

Full text
Abstract:
Fatigue damage assessment at the flexible riser hang-off location, where the pipe frequently endures maximum tension and curvature variations, is key to verify design integrity for service life. Traditionally, the fatigue analysis is performed in a separate local structure model, as the commercial global analysis software lacks the capability of handling the local behavior of the riser structural component, which is dependent on materials and manufacturing processes. During global fatigue analysis, the riser configuration is built with pinned connected at the hang-off point. The resulting tension and angle responses at the hang-off location, are then input to a local model to perform the stress and fatigue analysis, where the detailed pipe layer structure and bend stiffener are modeled. This traditional approach is conservative, time costly and is often limited to regular wave approach. Wellstream developed an external function to work with specialized commercial riser dynamic analysis software. The external function simulates the detailed behaviour of flexible pipe structure components and the resulting bending hysteresis during dynamic simulation in the time domain. Therefore, the stress time history of the tensile armour becomes available at the end of global simulation in the time domain and is ready for fatigue damage assessment by rain flow counting. This paper presents a study case where the fatigue assessment is performed directly at the hang-off region within the riser global dynamic simulation. The riser hang-off is situated at the top of the I-tube and a bend stiffener is fixed at the bottom of the I-tube. I-tube and pipe section are precisely modeled as pipe-in-pipe facility, where the interaction of riser/I-tube can be captured.

Abstract:
Since first appearing at the end of 2019, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread at a pace and scale not seen before. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. A rapid response was called for, and actors across the globe worked quickly to develop sets of preventative measures to contain the disease. One mode of transmission identified early on in the crisis was via surfaces and objects (fomites) (Howard et al. 2020). To combat this, hand hygiene was put forward as a key preventative measure and heralded as ‘the first line of defence against the disease’ (World Bank 2020). What followed was an unprecedented global focus on handwashing with soap. Health messages on how germs spread, the critical times at which hands should be washed, and methods for correct handwashing were shared (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2020). Political leaders around the world promoted handwashing and urged people to adopt the practice to protect against the coronavirus. The primary and secondary impacts of COVID-19 have affected people and industries in a variety of different ways. For the WASH sector, the centring of handwashing in the pandemic response has led to a sudden spike in hygiene activity. This SLH Rapid Topic Review takes stock of some of the cross-cutting challenges the sector has been facing during this period and explores the adaptations that have been made in response. It then looks forwards, thinking through what lies ahead for the sector, and considers the learning priorities for the next steps.

Annual global investment in research and development has tripled, and the United States’ share of both global R&D funding and total research output is diminishing. The open research system, with its expanding rates of investment and interconnectedness, has delivered tremendous benefits to many nations but also created new challenges for research integrity and security.

Abstract:
This rapid review focuses on Global Health Diplomacy and defines it as a method of interaction between the different stakeholders of the public health sector in a bid to promote representation, cooperation, promotion of the right to health and improvement of health systems for vulnerable populations on a global scale. It is the link between health and international relations. GHD has various actors including states, intergovernmental organizations, private companies, public-private partnerships and non-governmental organizations. Foreign policies can be integrated into national health in various ways i.e., designing institutions to govern practices regarding health diplomacy (i.e., health and foreign affairs ministries), creating and promoting norms and ideas that support foreign policy integration and promoting policies that deal with specific issues affecting the different actors in the GHD arena to encourage states to integrate them into their national health strategies. GHD is classified into core diplomacy – where there are bilateral and multilateral negotiations which may lead to binding agreements, multistakeholder diplomacy – where there are multilateral and bilateral negotiations which do not lead to binding agreements and informal diplomacy – which are interactions between other actors in the public health sector i.e., NGOs and Intergovernmental Organizations. The US National Security Strategy of 2010 highlighted the matters to be considered while drafting a health strategy as: the prevalence of the disease, the potential of the state to treat the disease and the value of affected areas. The UK Government Strategy found the drivers of health strategies to be self-interest (protecting security and economic interests of the state), enhancing the UK’s reputation, and focusing on global health to help others. The report views health diplomacy as a field which requires expertise from different disciplines, especially in the field of foreign policy and public health. The lack of diplomatic expertise and health expertise have been cited as barriers to integrating health into foreign policies. States and other actors should collaborate to promote the right to health globally.

Abstract:
• Energy transition in the transportation sector is indicated by the gradual shifting from the use of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) globally. • The transportation sector consumed 43% of total global energy and emitted 16.2% of total global emissions in 2020. Similarly, the transportation sector in Indonesia consumed 45% of the total energy and contributed to 13.6% of CO2 emission in 2019. • Global EV development and utilization are increasing exponentially, especially in developed countries, and there were 10 million EVs in 2020 worldwide. • China has successfully dominated global EVs, both in EV utilization and manufacturing with 45% global EVs Stock and 77% global EV batteries production. • Geopolitically, the abundance of Indonesian nickel reserves provides Indonesia a great opportunity to be one of the main players in EV battery manufacturing. • With an annual average growth of 6%, the projected motorized vehicles growth in Indonesia will reach 214 million in 2030. The right government policies would make Indonesia become the Southeast Asia EV market hub as Indonesia has the largest automotive sales and production market among ASEAN countries. • Measurable and realistic national EV development targets and plans supported by executing policies such as fiscal incentives and hardware standardization, sufficient EV charging infrastructure, and other supporting infrastructures are key elements that drive successful EV development in several countries. • Insufficient domestic industries and technology, and the absence of policies that comprehensively cover the customers and producers directly to support EV development and utilization in Indonesia, resulting in the achieved number of EVs and EV infrastructures in Indonesia are far from the updated target or even the initial target (RUEN, 2017).

Abstract:
The regimes for the control of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) are essential ingredients of the global order. Yet this order is currently in transition: the bipolarity of the Cold War has given way to a more complex, multipolar world order characterized by conflicts of interest and great power competition rather than cooperative security. This competition brings with it rising strategic uncertainties which endanger stability and have far reaching implications for WMD-related agreements. To better understand the implications of this changing global context for WMD arms control and disarmament measures this report looks at the past, present and future prospects for WMD-related treaties. The report begins by outlining four broad yet interlinked approaches to arms control and disarmament before considering how these have been applied to chemical, biological and nuclear weapons in the past and how these measures could be applied in the future.
