Abstract:
Zygmunt Gloger (1845–1910) is in Poland sometimes called “a preserver (ocalacz) of collective memory”, a collector of national heritage, a propagator of folk culture, a scholar-excursionist, and a writer-archaeologist. While reading his numerous works (over 800 publications in his bibliography), it is hard to ignore his patriotism and love for his homeland – Podlasie. His goal in life was to understand the problems of the people (understood as a Slavic community), their mentality and worldview, and to record their legacy in a way comprehensible to future generations. Gloger was aware that preserving the cultural heritage of a passing world, its textualization, was an effective method of maintaining Polish national unity in the period of Partitions. In this text I will attempt to present one of Gloger’s works – Baśnie i Powieści, published in 1889 in Warsaw and containing 13 stories which, as suggested by the very title page, were drawn from folk tales and some earlier books (“Baśnie i powieści z ust ludu i książek zebrał Zygmunt Gloger”). I will analyse the genesis of these stories, their literary genetics, composition, and character. I will pay attention to their axiology (e.g. the virtue of thrift, which is particularly stressed by Gloger) and the unique features of the collection (e.g. numerous proverbs, elements of traditional rituals of the Polish region of Podlasie,).

Abstract:
The article focuses on lexicographic means and methods used in the 19th century dialectal lexicography. Zygmunt Gloger in Tykocin Dictionary refers not only to dialect but also to other sources, which makes his work unique. It contains numerous references, especially to literary and historical texts, but also specialised papers. They serve either to prove the presence of a particular word/phrase in the Polish language in the past or in the times of Gloger, or to document the use of selected units in various syntactic and semantic contexts. Scientific references enable to define and to deepen etymology of selected words, or to provide an alternative variation. Referring to various sources in order to show historically or/and geographically determined phonetic, morphological and semantic-lexical forms that differ from forms in Tykocin Dictionary is rare.

Abstract:
AbstractFeathers tend to be darkly colored in habitats where relative humidity is high and pale where it is low. We suggest that this correlation, known as Gloger's rule, results, in part, from selection for dark feathers that are more resistant than light feathers to bacterial degradation, which is a severe problem in humid habitats where bacteria thrive and a lesser problem in arid habitats. In May and June 2000–2002 we sampled feather-degrading bacteria (Bacillus licheniformis) from the plumage of Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) in southeastern Arizona and northwestern Washington. Under standardized laboratory conditions, feather-degrading bacteria from the plumage of sparrows in the humid Northwest degraded feathers more rapidly and more completely than feather-degrading bacteria from sparrows of the arid Southwest. The differences in feather-degrading bacteria and in relative humidity produce a difference in the intensity of selection, which in turn produces the difference in color described in Gloger's rule.

The article discusses the picture of Latgale presented in the following sources: articles and letters by Stefania Ulanowska, unpublished fragments of “Łotysze Inflant Polskich” (stored in the Archives of The Polish Academy of Sciences and in the Polish Academy of Learning in Krakow, No. 1–29a), letters found in the documents of Jan Karłowicz in Lithuanian State Historical Archives (fund. 1135, inv. 10), and articles (published in “Biblioteka Warszawska” in 1880 and in “Pamiętnik Fizjograficzny” in 1881) by Zygmunt Gloger, a 19th-century Polish ethnographer, who carried out research in the former territories of Livonia. In the letters and articles by S. Ulanowska, Latgale (the author does not use this name) is presented as a land of unlimited possibilities of ethnic and archaeological research. The author devotes much attention to the description of the region around Wielony (Viļāni) depicted in “Łotysze Inflant Polskich”. The articles by Zygmunt Gloger deal mainly with the 1880 excavations in Marienhaus (present Viļaka), which provide an opportunity to study and analyze customs, beliefs, and ethnic issues of the discussed region. The author mentions also the beliefs of Latvians from the area of Marienhaus and describes traditions related to bread baking in the Podlasie region.

Abstract:
Ready-to-eat (RTE) deli meats are considered a food at high risk for causing foodborne illness. Deli meats are listed as the highest risk RTE food vehicle for Listeria monocytogenes. Cross-contamination in the retail deli market may contribute to spread of pathogens to deli meats. Understanding potential cross-contamination pathways is essential for reducing the risk of contaminating various products. The objective of this study was to track cross-contamination pathways through a mock retail deli market using an abiotic surrogate, GloGerm, to visually represent how pathogens may spread through the deli environment via direct contact with food surfaces. Six contamination origination sites (slicer blade, meat chub, floor drain, preparation table, employee's glove, and employee's hands) were evaluated separately. Each site was inoculated with 20 ml of GloGerm, and a series of standard deli operations were completed (approximately 10 min of work). Photographs were then taken under UV illumination to visualize spread of GloGerm throughout the deli. A sensory panel evaluated the levels of contamination on the resulting contaminated surfaces. Five of the six contamination origination sites were associated with transfer of GloGerm to the deli case door handle, slicer blade, meat chub, preparation table, and the employee's gloves. Additional locations became contaminated (i.e., deli case shelf, prep table sink, and glove box), but this contamination was not consistent across all trials. Contamination did not spread from the floor drain to any food contact surfaces. The findings of this study reinforce the need for consistent equipment cleaning and food safety practices among deli workers to minimize cross-contamination.

Abstract:
This paper reports the purpose of integrating Web 2.0 tool, Glogster in language learning tasks. Web 2.0 tools and digital blooms taxonomy have become prevalent in the English classroom with the ubiquitous use of smartphone, tabs and laptops in the language classroom. Certain details in this paper were presented in the Connecting Online (CO12) session in the year 2012. This paper also describes activities which would help in fostering creativity and autonomy in the teaching-learning process. Glogster is a web 2.0 tool which provides a platform for teachers and learners in creating and using glogs for language learning and other subjects. This tool provides a supportive platform for monitoring project based language learning activities. Having studied the use of the glog for language learning with the first batch of 54 students in 2009, in the following semesters 302 students were introduced to the glogging task. In total, 356 B.Tech students at VIT were introduced to web 2.0 tools for language learning tasks. They were introduced to the use of three Glogster tasks for synthesizing their real life and virtual language learning experiences in different semesters.

In the article the author muses upon differences between concepts of progressiveness and conservatism, about how 19th century publicists understood them. Narrowing the field of considerations, he focuses on so called “peasants’ issue”, social changes in the province after the abolition of serfdom, attitudes towards them as the representatives of classes commonly seen as conservative, aristocratic and land gentry. The confrontation of their views with the ideas shared by positivists, in this case of Stefania Ulanowska, Aleksander Świętochowski and Julian Ochorowicz, leads to the conclusion that classification into progressive or conservative is problematic and artificial, which was already observed in second half of the 19th century.

Abstract:
Druga część dopełnia pierwszą galerią tych, którzy dzięki pracy licznych „odkrywców” mogli stworzyć wielce znaczące do dziś dla kultury polskiej dzieła. Część trzecia kontrapunktowo rozważa stan i sens prowadzenia badań nad folklorem we współczesnych nam czasach.

Abstract:
An earlier analysis demonstrated that the mass-independent energy expenditure of five species of the genus Peromyscus Gloger, 1841 decreased with increasing aridity along a mesic–xeric climatic gradient. Each species was represented by two populations that were located along the gradient. These data are reexamined with new analytical techniques. A mass analysis accounted for the basal rates of six populations within 10% of the measured rates. The analysis accounted for the rates of all eight populations within 10% when it included the gradient. An apparent limit to this response may restrict the geographic distributions of Peromyscus in desert environments, which may have distributional and survival consequences with climate change. One species, the California mouse (Peromyscus californicus (Gambel, 1848)), did not conform to the analysis of the other species, which may reflect the presence of unidentified biological or environmental factors present in this and the other species. A successful analysis of the energy expenditures of species must include their characteristics and those of the environment in which they live because these are the factors that define species and their performance. To determine the effectiveness of an analysis, the estimated expenditures are compared with the measured expenditures, acceptable estimates being within 10% of the measured expenditures.

Abstract:
Morphological differentiation and relationships among collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx Gloger, 1841) remain unclear. This issue is particularly important in the Kivalliq Region, Nunavut, Canada, where Dicrostonyx groenlandicus (Traill, 1823) and Dicrostonyx richardsoni Merriam, 1900 ranges overlap. Possible sympatry of both species obscures the taxonomic status of collared lemmings from this area. We compared 2D outline shapes of the skull and three upper molars of collared lemmings collected from seven areas of the Canadian Arctic, including specimens from the Baker Lake – Aberdeen Lake area, in the Kivalliq Region, and Dicrostonyx hudsonius (Pallas, 1778) as an outgroup. Multivariate analyses revealed two distinct groups when considering the molars: D. hudsonius, and the remainder of lemmings. Dicrostonyx richardsoni, D. groenlandicus, and the lemmings from the Baker Lake – Aberdeen Lake area showed significant differences, especially when considering skull shapes, thus suggesting three distinct groups. However, skull shapes proved inefficient in discriminating between species. These differences suggest that collared lemmings from the Baker Lake – Aberdeen Lake area may not be correctly assigned to either of the two species without further genetic evaluation. They also suggest that these lemmings should have a peculiar taxonomic status. Our study calls for further taxonomical investigations for collared lemmings from the overlapping distribution ranges of D. groenlandicus and D. richardsoni.

Abstract:
Modernization of agriculture, economic development and population increase after the end of the Thirty Years' War caused authorities in many parts of Germany to decree the eradication of so-called pest animals, including the House Sparrow. Farmers were given targets, and had to deliver the heads of sparrows in proportion to the size of their farms or pay fines. At the end of the eighteenth century German ornithologists argued against the eradication of the sparrows. During the mid-nineteenth century, C. L. Gloger, the pioneer of bird protection in Germany, emphasized the value of the House Sparrow in controlling insect plagues. Many decrees were abolished because either they had not been obeyed, or had resulted in people protecting sparrows so that they always had enough for their “deliveries”. Surprisingly, various ornithologists, including Ernst Hartert and the most famous German bird conservationist Freiherr Berlepsch, joined in the war against sparrows at the beginning of the twentieth century, because sparrows were regarded as competitors of more useful bird species. After the Second World War, sparrows were poisoned in large numbers. Persecution of sparrows ended in Germany in the 1970s. The long period of persecution had a significant but not long-lasting impact on House Sparrow populations, and therefore cannot be regarded as a factor in the recent decline of this species in urban and rural areas of western and central Europe.

Abstract:
The heat dissipation limit (HDL) hypothesis suggests that energy output during lactation in mammals might be constrained by their ability to dissipate heat. This hypothesis predicts that wild mammals ought to adjust nest insulation in response to heat load, but these predictions have rarely been tested in wild mammals. Here we developed a simple score of nest-building for wild deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner, 1845)) on an ordinal scale from 0 to 4, based on three qualitative and easy to observe aspects of nest-building behaviour: bedding quality, nest shape, and mouse visibility. We used this measure to track 472 nest-building observations across 14 wild P. maniculatus that were brought into captivity and housed under pseudoambient temperatures across one reproductive event. Our observations of nest-building behaviour of the genus Peromyscus Gloger, 1841 provide varying support for the HDL hypothesis; there is a negative effect of ambient temperature on nest-building behaviour and lactating females became more sensitive to temperature as days post partum increased. However, females generally build more elaborate nests in lactation than other reproductive states and there are no effects of litter size, total pup mass, or days post partum on nest scores during lactation. Our observations have broad implications for quantifying behaviours in nest-building species and metabolic relationships in wild mammals.

Abstract:
Density estimates are integral to wildlife management, but they can be costly to obtain. Indices of density may provide efficient alternatives, but calibration is needed to ensure the indices accurately reflect density. We evaluated several indices of small-mammal density using livetrapping and motion-activated cameras in the Cascade Mountains of Washington (USA). We used linear regression to compare spatially explicit capture–recapture density estimates of mice (genus Peromyscus Gloger, 1841), voles (genera Microtus Schrank, 1798 and Myodes Pallas, 1811), and chipmunks (genus Neotamias A.H. Howell, 1929) with four indices. Two indices were based on livetrapping (minimum number alive (MNA) and number of captures per 100 trap-nights) and two indices were based on photos from motion-activated cameras (proportion of cameras detecting a species and number of independent detections). We evaluated how the accuracy of trap-based indices increased with trapping effort using subsets of the full dataset (n = 7 capture occasions per site). Most indices provided reliable indicators of small-mammal density, and livetrapping indices (R2 = 0.64–0.98) outperformed camera-based indices (R2 = 0.24–0.86). All indices performed better for more abundant species. The effort required to estimate each index varied and indices that required more effort performed better. These findings should help managers, conservation practitioners, and researchers select small-mammal monitoring methods that best fit their needs.
