Abstract:

Abstract:
Modern scholars can sometimes reconstruct the methods of medieval glossary-makers by tracking individual glosses along the path from the textual source to the final destination in the glossarial list. Here I wish to pursue a trail of clues through two early-eleventh-century manuscripts of the Excerptiones de Prisciano (‘Excerpts of Priscian’), a Latin grammatical treatise which has been identified as the source for Ælfric's bilingual Grammar. Viewed singly, the manuscripts of this work offer partial views of glossatorial activity; viewed together, these fragmentary glimpses snap into perspective, rendering a dynamic picture of glossary-making as a corporate enterprise undertaken by a group of Anglo-Saxon schoolmen working in several manuscripts simultaneously.

Abstract:
A considerable lack of agreement exists, particularly between French and English-speaking geomorphologists, on the precise use of many periglacial terms, and up to the presenty there bas been little correlation of the periglacial terminology of these two languages. Accordingly, the authors have prepared a bilingual glossary of 900 periglacial terms in an attempt to eliminate some of this confusion. Many of the problems encountered in the preparation of this glossary result from different conceptions of the terms « periglacial » and « périglaciaire ». Periglacial studies are generally considered to involve analyses of permanently frozen ground, patterned ground and frost-shattering, whereas the term « périglaciaire »refers to the systematic study of all « cold »processes (except those associated with glacier ice) and their resultant phenomena. The term thus includes, amongst other things, gelifraction, gelifluction, geliturbation, fluvioperiglacial action, effect of sea, lake, river and ground ice, windwork in areas of cold climate, action of snow, and chemical erosion by meltwater.

Abstract:
Abstract The sources of information that translators may use are extremely varied, ranging from oral consultation with an expert to a search using specialised dictionaries and glossaries. Nowadays, however, one the most relevant documentation activities in the field of Translation involves the use of Internet resources and, closely related to this, the compilation and management of virtual corpora. For this reason, in the present paper we present a systematic methodology for extracting bilingual and bidirectional glossaries (English-Spanish/Spanish-English) based on parallel corpora to translate TV User Manuals. In fact, according to art. 5 of the Council Resolution of 17 December 1998 on operating instructions for technical consumer goods (98/C 411/01) it is essential to control the quality when writing and translating these manuals. In order to illustrate this methodology we focus on corpus design (according to the skopo) and on the compilation protocol (in four steps: searching, downloading, text formatting and saving data) in order to ensure quality. As for the quantity, we check the quantitative representativeness with the ReCor software (cfr. Seghiri 2006: 387). Once the corpus is representative from the qualitative and the quantitative points of view, it can be managed with a concordance program. So, we illustrate how to extract the terms semiautomatically in order to build a bilingual and bidirectional glossary with a parallel concordance named ParaConc. Thus, in the present paper we combine the main resource for researchers (cfr. Bowker 1998; Varantola 2000; Seghiri 2011) within the Translation field: corpora, in order to ensure quality; and the main documentation resource for prospective translators (cfr. Corpas et al. 2001): bilingual glossaries.

Abstract:
The speech of the language pathologist may serve as a linguistic model in terms of application of language norms, unambiguous use of lexis and register for the achievement of effective professional communication. The aim of the present survey was to integrate the lexical and the corpus-based approach and to compile a collection of terminological units for the purposes of teaching English as a specialized language in the domain of Logopedics. The ESP syllabus brings together a broad range of subjects such as linguistics, phonetics, and medical sciences anatomy and physiology, psychology, neurology, and speech and language pathology. To introduce the core vocabulary and the main issues in several fields and to compensate for the lack of bilingual reference materials available to students in Logopedics, the creation of a bilingual glossary is naturally justified. On the one hand are the key components of speech production such as phonation; resonance; fluency; intonation, voice, and the components of language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics). On the other hand, the focus on doctor-patient communication, history taking, voice, mechanics of breathing, syndromes of communicative disorders, should be introduced in accordance with the academic style conventions. For the achievement of such complex the teaching and learning goals a series of ESP language practice materials were developed, incorporating the listening, reading and speaking skills. Terminological units were extracted from authentic publications, grouped thematically in bilingual glossaries and published as an educational resource on the university platform. Key lexical items were incorporated into learning tasks and specially designed exercises for practicing pronunciation, vocabulary, and extensive oral practice through audio visuals, discussions, simulation and role-play activities, students’ Power point presentations by topics and other communication-based activities that transform the classroom into an interactive place. Further to the development of foreign language fluency, the researcher/lecturer believes that writing summaries and translating short professional texts should be part of the language seminars for logopedics. The bilingual glossaries provide clear and concise definitions, sample sentences that illustrate usage, and translation equivalents in Bulgarian, while the language practice resources reinforce the relevant terms in the field.

Abstract:
Although there are many English–Portuguese technical glossaries on the market, very few are designed to meet the specific needs of translators, whose main task is the production of an idiomatic text either in the mother tongue or in the foreign language. For that purpose, a mere list of monolexical terms (usually based on previous compilations or abstract conceptual schemata, and their equivalents) will not suffice. Most importantly, the producer of a text needs to know how a word is used in context, and this can be inferred from the observation of authentic examples. Corpus Linguistics has proved to be an invaluable tool in retrieving technical terms and phraseologies from corpora. In this paper, we employ a corpus-based methodology or, more precisely, the ‘corpus-driven approach’, to compile a bilingual, monodirectional English–Portuguese glossary of cooking terms ( Teixeira and Tagnin, 2008 ), covering the various stages of the project, with an emphasis on the identification of candidate terms, and their subsequent validation through the generation of frequency and keyword lists using the lexical analysis software, WordSmith Tools.

This paper deals with computational linguistic tools and methods for the extraction of raw material for terminological glossaries from machine-readable text. We concentrate on monolingual German term candidates, and only briefly hint at tools and procedures for the creation of bilingual glossaries. Most of the examples we use to illustrate methods and results of our work come from technical texts provided by the translation services of Daimler Chrysler AG1 and from legal texts made available by the European Academy in Bozen, Sudtirol. The Academy is working on translations of legal documents for bilingual South Tyrol, and, in this context, on the creation, upgrading, and maintenance of terminological resources.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Our study concerns the language of tourism from a lexicographical perspective.Exploiting the web we realized a corpus ad hoc. This corpus is composed by about 10.000 texts in three languages (French, Italian and English), aligned using “Alinea”.Starting from terminological extraction, we analysed some collocations at the aim to create a trilingual and tri-directional glossary. We chose this subject according to the increasing importance taken from tourism economy in the world. Our study fields are thematic terminology, corpus linguistics and automatic language treatment. The first chapter presents the study field of our research. First of all, we introduced to corpus linguistics presenting the different categories of corpus and pointing out our attention on two main notions: representativeness and context. Therefore, we explained the link between Language for Special Purposes and tourism discourse as a Specialized Discourse. In the second chapter, we showed the trilingual thematic corpus we created during our researches. We described the main steps to create a corpus: collection of texts, cleaning and annotation. In this chapter, we gave a particular attention to the presentation of “Alinea”.Finally, the third chapter is a study of frequent collocations with the term “town” (ville). The annexes present the glossary as well as the methodological principals we followed in the redaction

Abstract:
When trying to translate a specific text on football from Spanish into Brazilian Portuguese or vice versa, the translator is faced with a myriad of footbal-specific terms which are not found in most dictionaries or glossaries, or which are found in a limited way, leaving out many real use situations. In the course of this study, a bilingual and bi-directional glossary was built with the most commonly used football terms in written communication in the Spanish-Portuguese language pair, . My initial assumption was that Corpus Linguistics would provide the necessary means for such a task. Corpus Linguistics enables one to study a language or a language variety using a computer, retrieving empirical evidence found in a corpus, which is defined as a set of texts, compiled according to predefined criteria, in electronic format. This dissertation is divided into five parts. In the introduction, some historical aspects of Portuguese and Spanish are discussed, as well as the influence of football in our society, the problems found in dictionaries and glossaries, and the potential of football news retrieved from the Internet as a basis for building the glossary proposed. In the second part, I argue that Corpus Linguistics is an approach and a method of research, and present the different types of corpora. Then, the question of equivalence in translation is briefly addressed, the content of our corpus of study is explained, as well as the steps adopted to identify the terms and their translation equivalents, through the comparison of football news from Brazil, Spain and Argentina, and by means of the extraction and observation of keywords, with the aid of specific electronic tools. In the third part, I discuss the terminology issues implicated in this study, especially with reference to the decisions taken for the macro- and microstructure of the glossary. In the fourth part, I propose a form of presenting the glossary to the user and provide a sample of entries. In the fifth and last part, I make the final considerations, in which I conclude that Corpus Linguistics, as an approach and a methodology, proved to be effective for the construction of the targeted bilingual glossary, since exploring the specialized corpora made it possible to properly identify the main football terms used in written communication in Brazilian, Spanish and Argentine journalism and their translation equivalents. The result is a bilingual work of reference in the field of football, which contains nearly four thousand entries, all of them with authentic examples of usage.

Abstract:
When designing a bilingual terminographic product for translators, a terminographer must be concerned not only with including, in both languages, the specific terms of a (sub)field of knowledge, but also with presenting these terms within their typical phraseological structures, that is, associated with the elements they combine with syntagmatically and recurrently in the texts of that domain. This is because a translator needs to produce a target text appropriate to the language pattern in focus, so as to reflect the modus dicendi of that specialized field. In this way, the text produced will sound much more natural to the community of readers, thereby avoiding noise in communication. Given the lack of bilingual terminographic products on Strength Training (ST), addressed to translators, the main purpose of this research study is to provide theoretical and methodological foundations for the development of a Portuguese-English glossary of ST terminology. This glossary is presented here as a prototype – a sample of a whole – especially designed to assist Brazilian translators working in the Portuguese to English direction, but it can also be useful for researchers and students of this subject to produce scientific papers in English. It includes a user guide, a domain tree of ST in Portuguese, a list of terms in Portuguese, and 30 sample terminology records in extended format. Another objective of the study is to provide a description of the behavior of terms in Portuguese and English, and of eventive specialized phraseological units (BEVILACQUA, 2003; 2004) in Portuguese on ST scientific articles. As theoretical framework, we based on the principles of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT) and on the foundations and guidelines of Corpus Linguistics (CL). Following CTT (CABRÉ, 1999a; 1999b; 2001a; 2001b; 2003; 2009) implies adopting the term as the central object of study and conceiving it, first of all, as a lexical unit of natural language that acquires specialized value within a specialized context, according to semantic, discursive and pragmatic criteria. Following CL (BIBER, 2012; BERBER SARDINHA, 2004) implies a probabilistic viewpoint of language, assuming that, although many linguistic features are possible theoretically, they do not occur with the same frequency. The topics of terminological variation, functional approach to translation, and the scientific article as a specialized genre are also highlighted in the study. Our corpus consists of 70 articles from leading scientific journals on ST, originally written in Portuguese and English. They are two comparable subcorpora, one in each language. For the exploration and analysis of the corpus, we used the AntConc software (ANTHONY, 2011), especially the tools keyword list, n-grams and concordance. As support material, we used textbooks and reference scientific papers on ST, a pre-existing personal glossary of Physical Education, the International Anatomical Terminology, Google Scholar, Wikipedia, among others. We also had the collaboration of two expert consultants in ST. Therefore, the research embraces a theoretical part and an applied part that interrelate and fall into the double face of Terminology, since there is a description of a specialized language from a given theoretical point of view and the design of a concrete product.

Abstract: This PhD research presents a comparative study on the socio-cultural and historical aspects that underlie the terms occurring in Brazilian and French marriage certificates. It also proposes a bilingual Portuguese-French glossary in the field of marriage certificates, which was elaborated to assist professionals interested in the field of Law and mainly certified translators in their work. In addition, it was studied the semantic-conceptual and lexical evolution of the terms casamento and mariage, and the terminological set denominating the agents and places responsible for celebration and registration of civil marriages and issuance of certificates that proved these unions throughout the history of Brazil and France, as well as the cultural particularities that mark this evolution according to the sociocultural and historical reality of these countries. As a methodology for this investigation, the CCBCorpus, composed of 333 Brazilian certificates issued between 1890 and 2015, and the CCFCorpus, which contains 102 French certificates issued between 1791 and 2015, were created. These certificates were acquired thanks to collaborators and the internet. LBCorpus and LFCorpus were also created to bring, respectively, Brazilian and French constitutional laws, decrees and amendments promulgated in the same period as the certificates of CCBCorpus and CCFCorpus. In addition, the SupportCorpusBR and SupportCorpusFR were created, in which it is possible to find general and specialized d... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Bilingual glossaries enable translators to maintain accurate domain-specific translation and consistency. This study aims to extract bilingual pairs semi-automatically and provides a systematic specialized term compilation for translators to follow. First, two natural language processing tools, Anymalign and Pialign, were adopted to extract Chinese-English candidate pairs that had higher translation probabilities from Taiwan’s and Mainland China’s criminal parallel corpora. As the extraction tools are not perfect, this study focuses on improving the quality of the preliminary extracted results: qualified English noun (phrases) were identified first. English words/phrases were assigned parts-of-speech labels by Stanford POS Tagger automatically. Linguistic information was helpful in identifying and removing non-noun (phrase) patterns in order to locate qualified English noun phrases (NP). 1,852 English NPs with their Chinese pairs were found to be qualified (Taiwan), while 3,782 NPs were found to be valid (Mainland China). These results include noun phrases with longer word units. Based on these candidate results, 694 bilingual pairs were identified to be correctly aligned (Taiwan), while 852 correctly aligned bilingual pairs were identified (Mainland China). An American reference corpus was utilized to mark terms out by the indication of Keyness scores. The threshold was set at the critical value ≥ 3.84 calculated by the log-likelihood ratio. 394 terms were found among 487 qualified noun (phrases) from Taiwan, while 418 terms were identified among 517 Mainland China’s result. Qualified noun (phrases) and terms were adopted to produce a comparable list of noun (phrases), showing the similarities and differences in Chinese legal expressions and English translation across the Straits. Improving the extraction of English NPs was confirmed to be much more effective than that of Chinese NPs because Chinese parts-of-speech can be made clearer only in sentences. In contrast, as suffixes of English words are more distinct, it is shown that English noun (phrase) extraction was more effective by having identified their suffixes according to the parts-of-speech. Based on the result, extraction of bilingual pairs was proven to be difficult because, first, no regular patterns could be identified in the two main Chinese NP groups: those NPs include/exclude之 zhi (in Taiwan’s NP), or的de/之zhi (Mainland China’s NP). Second, the English translation patterns corresponding to Chinese NPs were neither always predictable. Filtering terms was proven to be even more difficult. As the length of an NP unit increases, mixture of terms and common words within an NP will more likely appear. Legal connotations are not entirely the same in Taiwan’s and Mainland China’s legal systems. If the word units of certain phrases are not extracted completely, falsely similar or seemingly different bilingual pairs will be created. The methodology and findings presented in this study are recommended to be applicable to other language pairs and different domain-specific genres, which may facilitate improvements in the compilation of bilingual term glossaries and localization in translation.

Abstract:
É possível verificar a forte presença do português e do cabo-verdiano. O português é considerado a língua segunda, e o cabo-verdiano é a língua materna.
